CURRICULUM OVERVIEW PREP SCHOOL The Prep School curriculum comprises all formal academic subjects in addition to the broader opportunities of extension activities outside the classroom.

PRE-PREP Throughout the Pre-Prep department the girls have specialist teachers for ICT, Music and PE and there are plenty of opportunities during the year for the girls to celebrate their achievements in these subjects, such as school assemblies, Sports Day and the Christmas Nativity.

EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) Pre-Prep I (Reception), celebrates the start of school life at St Catherine's. Our main objective during this first year at school is for girls to feel secure, happy and settled. The girls follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum with activities to promote the Prime Areas of Learning which are: • •

Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. Specific areas include Literacy, Mathematical Development, Understanding of the World, Expressive Arts and Design

(Art, Crafts, Music, Ballet and Drama are developed through the Expressive Arts and Design area of the curriculum.) There is a strong emphasis on having fun whilst learning which gives the girls confidence and encourages independence.

PRE-PREP II AND III (Years 1 and 2) These year groups continue to build on the solid foundations laid down in Pre-Prep I. The girls are encouraged during these years to become increasingly independent. The happy, secure and inspiring classrooms provide the girls with the confidence to tackle new challenges and to develop their emerging skills in reading, writing and maths. In Pre-Prep III girls start to learn the violin or cello. French, Ballet, Tap and Modern Dance are also offered as after school activities.

PREP Form I - Lower III (Years 3 – 6) Girls from Form I to Lower III remain in Form based teaching groups and from Lower II are in allocated teaching sets for Maths, spelling and reading. Specialist teachers deliver Art, Computing, Design Technology, Drama, French, Music, Latin and PE. Girls in Lower III are taught RS by our School Chaplain. We are proud to be a De Bono Thinking School and promote independent thought and creative approaches to teaching and learning. Girls have a weekly Thinking Skills lesson which includes introduction to De Bono’s Thinking Hats. Through our Thinking Skills programme, other learning strategies are introduced such as motivation, revision and examination technique. In addition, there is a wide and varied extra-curricular programme which enables to girls to engage in many different pursuits. Using their creativity/ingenuity, girls often create and lead their own clubs. Our aim is for girls to leave the Prep School as confident, independent thinkers who are ready to take advantage of all of the opportunities available in their next phase of education. Girls typically take up Senior School places at a number of excellent schools including St Catherine’s Senior School. We are very proud of their achievements.

SENIOR SCHOOL In the first three years all girls follow a general academic programme which is designed to give each girl experience of a broad curriculum in advance of her making her GCSE option choices in the Spring of U4 (Year 9). In the middle of the U5 (Year 11) girls then choose their A Level options. The curriculum at St Catherine’s may be divided into specific areas. In alphabetical order these are:

CAREERS

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT)

A comprehensive package of Careers advice and guidance is available to the girls both within the curriculum and also outside normal lessons. The U4 Lecture course opens up a range of possible careers; initial careers discussions take place and include GCSE option choices. The Head of each Department addresses the girls during their lecture programme and outlines the nature and requirement of the I/GCSE course for their subject. We also offer a GCSE Options Fair shortly before the options submission deadline at which they can ask any further questions. The GCSE Booklet will be available on the website.

All girls study IT throughout their time at St Catherine’s. The course is designed to equip them for the world of work as well as further studies after they leave us. Computer languages, basic programming, app and website design are features of the course. IPads are compulsory for Years 5 to 11 and are used extensively by girls as tools to aid learning. Please see section on Digital Learning. All girls take an approved GCSE qualification in ICT in Year 10.

L5 have an Enterprise Day and throughout the Fifth Form, the focus is increasingly on A Level options and career paths. During the Sixth Form the focus shifts to consider university applications and higher education courses together with careers implications. Careers networking with alumnae and current and former parents via the St Catherine’s Association (our alumnae organisation) is a particular strength.

CREATIVE ARTS There are six Creative Arts subjects: Art, Design and Technology, Drama, Food & Nutrition, Music and Textiles. These subjects are taught on a rotation basis in the first two years. In U4 all study Music and Drama and opt for two of the other four.

LANGUAGES In U3 all girls study French, German and Spanish, opting for two of these languages at the end of U3 to carry forward for the next two years of study. There is the opportunity for the more able linguists to continue with all three in L4 (Year 8) by invitation. All girls study Latin in the first three years and there is a short taster session in Greek during U4. Each girl is required to select at least one modern foreign language at IGCSE level taken from French, German and Spanish. In the Sixth Form Italian GCSE and AS are also available.

LIFE MATTERS (as PSHE is known at St Catherine’s)

All girls study English throughout their first five years at St Catherine’s. At IGCSE level two separate examinations are taken in English Language and English Literature.

A comprehensive curriculum of personal, social and health education is taught by experienced teachers throughout the first five years. These lessons embrace a wide range of topics and are designed to help promote an awareness and understanding of a variety of social, moral, cultural, ethical and financial issues. Occasional lectures are also included in the Sixth Form General Studies course.

GREY MATTERS

During U3 a short course is taught entitled Grey Matters, which looks at different learning styles and thinking skills and underpins work carried out throughout the girls’ school careers. It aims to foster the confidence needed for independent learning.

All girls take part in PE lessons or Games programmes (U5-U6) throughout their time at St Catherine’s. In addition, they may take GCSE, AS and A Level PE as an examined subject. There is a clear emphasis on fitness for life as well as many opportunities to play competitive sport in the extra curriculum.

HOUSE STUDY/SUBJECT ‘CLINICS’

SCIENCES AND MATHS

On Tuesday - Friday, a supervised House Study period of 30 minutes allows girls to begin their prep supervised by a teacher or access subject clinics.

All girls study Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths throughout their first five years. At IGCSE level girls opt for Double Award or Triple Award Science and all take IGCSE Maths. Girls are placed in Science divisions (sets) from L4 (Year 8) onwards and in Maths divisions from the midpoint of U3 (Year 7) onwards. These sets are reviewed at frequent intervals; movement between them usually occurs at the end of the academic year.

ENGLISH

HUMANITIES All girls study History, Geography and Religious Studies (RS) in the first three years at St Catherine’s. These are all available as GCSE options (History and Geography as IGCSE options). Girls are required to choose either the short course RS (1 year) and examined in Year 10 or the full course RS (2 years) as part of their GCSE options.

THINKING SKILLS St Catherine’s is an accredited De Bono Thinking School. Thinking Skills, incorporating the six De Bono Thinking Hats and Cognitive Research Trust (CoRT) skills, complement the curriculum. Girls are encouraged at all stages to learn independently and to take intellectual risks. Getting the ‘wrong’ answer is regarded as a positive step forward, and helps to increase understanding.

PUBLIC EXAMINATIONS The breakdown of GCSE and IGCSE subjects is as follows: IGCSE: Biology, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, French, German, Geography, History, Information Communication Technology, Mathematics, Physics, and Spanish. GCSE: Art, DT, Drama, Food & Nutrition, Greek, Latin, Music, PE, Religious Studies, Textiles. AS and A Level: Girls opt for four AS subjects and have complete flexibility in their choice of nearly 30 subjects. New subjects, available in the Sixth Form only, include Business, Classics, Economics, Politics and International Relations, History of Art, Photography and Psychology. All girls take General Studies AS level in the L6 year.

The flexibility to continue with four subjects to A Level or to drop one AS subject and perhaps pick up another is highly valued by the girls. Unlike other qualifications, where there is less flexibility, the girls can decide whether they wish to pursue a single strand in their curriculum (e.g. all languages, three sciences, all arts ) or whether they wish to mix curriculum areas (e.g. two science, one language and one humanity). Our students achieve outstanding qualifications at IGCSE, across a range of subjects, and we believe that narrowing their focus at AS is entirely acceptable if it is the girl’s informed choice. St Catherine’s is assiduous in keeping abreast of all curriculum changes as they occur, and we ensure students and parents are kept fully informed. The Class of 2016 excludes 4 girls with who have deferred their university entry and 10 girls who will apply to university during a gap year of structured work/internships/travel . They continue to be supported by St Catherineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s staff as they make these applications.

BOARDING Head of Boarding: Mrs Lorinda Munro-Faure, MA Oxon, PGCE (Biology and Oxbridge Mentor) St Catherine’s was founded in 1885 as both a boarding and day school. Boarding is an intrinsic part of the School and is fundamental to the ethos of St Catherine’s. Boarding fosters respect and concern for others, and gives the girls the confidence to develop their independence and own sense of style. There are almost as many reasons to board as there are girls and their families. It could be that a girl already has a very full and active life after school and boarding makes it easier to manage her commitments, be they dramatic, musical, sporting or artistic. Sometimes deciding to board is based on what best suits the whole family; a number our parents live abroad and so for them, full boarding is the obvious choice. Weekly boarding, with the week spent in school and the weekend at home, has become increasingly popular, especially in families where both parents work in the UK. At weekends there is a busy and exciting programme for our full boarders; weekly boarders are always welcome to stay and join in the fun.

WHAT PARENTS LIKE ABOUT BOARDING: • • •

Full boarding allows girls from every corner of the globe to experience a St Catherine’s education. Weekly boarding allows girls to take part in a wide range of activities and do most of their prep at school during the week, having the weekend free with the family. Girls adjust to living in a community, learning about respect and responsibility, compromise and kindness. They learn to care for and support all members of the community and not just their friends. Disagreements have to be resolved and other viewpoints considered. Living in an international community opens girls’ minds to other cultures, music, food, dress and customs, and helps them to develop a wide perspective, so important for an increasingly global working environment. Boarding is a stepping stone to university life; it leads to greater independence, self-motivation and organisation. Boarding at St Catherine’s, at the weekends, is flexible; except for the early May Bank holiday, there are no fixed exeats.

BOARDING OPTIONS St Catherine’s sets out to be as flexible as possible in its range of boarding provision.

FULL BOARDING The community of full boarders is a tightly knit and very supportive group of friends, looked after by a team of enthusiastic staff, most of whom are teachers. The weekends are filled with activities which might include theatre trips locally or in the West End, city visits – Winchester, Windsor, Brighton, Salisbury – the Clothes Show, London’s South Bank, Harry Potter World, the London Boat Show, club rugby matches, Thorpe Park, paintballing, Guildford Race for Life, strawberry picking, go-karting and charity events. A huge variety of activities, with something for everyone.

WEEKLY BOARDING Weekly boarding is a popular option which offers weekdays at St Catherine’s and the weekends at home. Weekly boarders may go home on Friday night and return on Sunday evening or Monday morning in time for registration (or breakfast if that suits better). Should weekly boarders wish to remain overnight during the weekend, perhaps for a match, a rehearsal, a social with a boys’ school such as Eton or Winchester they are most welcome. To help busy working parents, we are developing a scheme to offer bus transport on Friday evenings after activities up the A3 to a point in South West London. Further details on request.

OCCASIONAL BOARDING The School offers ‘sleepovers’ for daygirls when trips return late at night or depart in the early morning and also for the occasional night or more, to accommodate family commitments. Occasional boarding should be requested with at least 48 hours’ notice and is only available if there is a spare bed. It is always worth contacting us at short notice if the need arises. THE BOARDING DAY

BRONTE YEARS 7 & 8

The boarding day is more or less the same in all Houses, although ‘lights-out’ becomes later as the girls get older. Before the Sixth Form, most of the day is spent in uniform until school ends and the girls change into ‘mufti’ to go off to their chosen activities. After these and ‘own time’, during which the girls are free to choose to do music practice or extra reading or simply relax, there is supper and then prep. Roll call follows and then girls get ready for bed at the appropriate time.

Mrs Lucinda Norman, BA Bath Spa, PGCE (Ceramics) Situated on the first floor of the main School, Bronte has light and spacious dormitories for between four and seven girls. Girls change dormitories every half term to share with other people. There is a café style kitchen for essential snacking which also includes pool and table tennis tables. In addition there is a large comfortable common room with TV, DVD player and sofas. Prep is supervised by boarding staff.

SYMES YEAR 9 Miss Helen Wilson, BEd, Chichester (Physical Education) Located in a modern, light and spacious building next to the Anniversary Halls, Symes is dedicated to the needs of Year 9 in their transition to senior boarding. Symes has its own well-equipped common room and kitchen. Girls are given the opportunity to begin spending prep time in their rooms during the course of the year as part of their development towards independent learning and GCSE study.

KELLER YEARS 10 & 11 Mrs Charlotte George, BSc Dunelm, PGCE (Biology) Mostly on the second floor of the main building, Keller accommodates boarders in mixed-sized study bedrooms of up to four. The common room has a Freeview TV, DVD player and a kitchen. Prep is done in the girls’ own rooms in these iGCSE/ GCSE years. Girls enjoy the atmosphere in Keller; many of the rooms have eaves-style ceilings, giving them a cosy home-fromhome environment.

THE SIXTH FORM Mrs Vic Alexander, BEd Brighton (Physical Education) Boarding in the Sixth Form is designed to increase the girls’ personal responsibility and independence in preparation for life beyond school. Girls share twin study bedrooms. The L6 and U6 common rooms are well equipped, each with a kitchen, sofas, plus Freeview TV and DVD player. All Sixth Form boarders can work in their study bedrooms or may also use the Sixth Form Library until roll call at 8.45pm.

ICT PROVISION IN BOARDING All boarding houses have access to the School’s wireless network enabling girls to use their own laptops, iPads and other wireless devices. Many girls use Skype and Facetime to keep in touch with family and friends at home. For younger girls there is no access to the wifi after lights-out. The School’s firewall restricts access to social networking during the teaching day and prep time on an age-appropriate basis.

BOARDING INFORMATION Boarding Information Evenings are held through out the year and give you an opportunity to see how boarding would suit your daughter: 2016-2017 dates can be found on Page 1 of this information booklet. You are invited to arrive after the end of the school day and will be shown the extra-curricular activities by the younger boarders. There will then be a tour of boarding and a chance to see the U3 (Year 7) girls relaxing or taking part in an activity such as Diary Club or Yoga. Whilst your daughters are whisked off to supper with the U3s, you will have the chance to meet our Headmistress, Alice Phillips, and Head of Boarding, Lorinda Munro-Faure. It is an opportunity to ask questions and talk freely about your daughter’s boarding needs. Girls then join their parents for a final plenary session which finishes about 7pm. If you are specifically interested in boarding in the Sixth Form, then please do join us at our Sixth Form Open Evening on Friday 30th September 2016 or arrange a separate appointment thereafter. These are offered to boarders both during the week and at weekends’. A former boarder writes: ‘Boarding is one of the best choices I think I made when I joined the School in U3. From it I learned so much about how to live with and get along with everyone around me, despite any differences we may have. The friends I made and things we got up to have given me many happy memories.’

SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES Bursaries and scholarships are not the same. At St Catherine’s, scholarships are awarded on merit and may be offered for academic excellence, or for exceptional talent in Art, Textiles, Drama, Music or Sport. Scholarships are not means -tested. Bursaries are awarded on formal assessment of proven financial need and after a thorough form of means-testing, but your daughter will still have to show academic ability. Bursaries will be checked every year and if your financial situation changes, so will the amount of any bursary.

11+ (YEAR 7) There are four Academic Entrance Scholarships available for pupils at age 11. These are awarded on the results of the Entrance Examination. Two scholarships are for 20% of the fees payable and the other two are for 10% of the fees. These are for the first five years of Senior School and can be extended through the Sixth Form at the discretion of the Headmistress and in consultation with the teaching staff.

UPPER 5 (YEAR 11) AND SIXTH FORM The following scholarships are awarded during the Summer Term L5 (Year 10). Selection for the awards is based on the results of the June examinations at the end of the L5, performance throughout the L5 year, a Scholarship Examination paper and an interview. Full details are sent to the parents of all members of this year group at the beginning of the Summer Term. There are several internal academic Sixth Form Scholarships: (i)

Margaret Kaye Scholarships

These are scholarships of 20% of the fees payable to run for three years (through U5 and the Sixth Form). (ii)

Sixth Form Scholarships

These are scholarships of 20% of fees. However, this group can be extended by a mix of additional 20% or 10% awards depending on the performance of the candidates and the recommendations of the awarding panel. (iii)

The Clare Gregory Memorial Sports Scholarship

This is awarded for sporting prowess and is for 20% of the day fees in the Sixth Form. The specific criteria are circulated to parents in the L5 year. (iv)

The Sixth Form Art and Textiles Scholarship

There is an Art and Textiles Scholarship to the value of 20% of the School Fees, awarded during the Autumn Term of U5. (v)

The Sixth Form Drama Scholarship

There is a Drama Scholarship to the value of 20% of the School Fees, awarded during the Autumn Term of U5. (vi)

Scholarships for New Entrants to the Sixth Form

There are up to three external academic scholarships of up to 20% of fees and these are awarded at the discretion of the Headmistress, to new pupils joining the School in the Sixth Form. NB The Sixth Form Art and Music Scholarships may be applied for by external applicants by the end of October each year.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS An 11+ Music Scholarship of 20% of the fees and tuition on one instrument may be awarded annually upon entry to an 11+ candidate adjudged by the Director of Music and an adjudication panel to have strong musical talent. A second Music Scholarship of 10% of fees and tuition on one instrument can be awarded in years where the field of applicants is particularly strong. Applications should be made by November and auditions are in January. A Sixth Form Music Scholarship is awarded to a pupil entering the Sixth Form – from within the School or as an external applicant - to the value of 20% of the School Fees. There is also a Jennifer Bate Organ Scholarship, offered in conjunction with Guildford Cathedral, which is awarded in alternate years to a girl who is already a good organist or shows potential. This award is typically for 20% of fees payable, but may involve means-tested bursary assistance if appropriate. Further Music Awards which cover music tuition, exam fees and sheet music on a range of musical instruments from chapel organ to piccolo and voice are available to pupils in the Senior School. Some are specifically for those wanting to take up less ‘popular’ instruments. Auditions for Awards take place at the same time as Music Scholarship auditions. (NB In each case the fees referred to are the fees payable by the parent for the term in question.)

BURSARIES / FEES ASSISTANCE A limited number of means-tested bursaries is available to external applicants on entry into the School in Form One (7+), U3 (11+) and the Sixth Form. Awards may be up to the equivalent of 100% of fees and may also cover some essential extras such as uniform, iPad, travel, music tuition, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme etc. Applicants will be asked to complete a detailed submission to the Business Manager and then an awarding panel will determine the level of award to be offered subject to the candidate passing the School’s existing Entrance Test and a home visit. Priority consideration will be given to Bursary applications submitted by 31st October for entry to the School the following September. Late submissions may be considered by the Awards Committee on a case by case basis at the next scheduled Awards Committee meeting but the school has limited funds and can make no promises for support. If any future scholarships, awards, bursaries or discounts are given to the same girl, then they are applied to residual fees not full fees.

Fees include lunches, all residential whole year group curriculum visits (Form I - Upper 5), e.g. Activities Week in Senior School, Isle of Wight for L3 etc and day curriculum visits for Pre-Prep Fees also include Creative Arts materials for years U3-U4. All fees are payable in advance by the first day of term by termly direct debit unless arrangements have been made to pay by School Fee Plan for monthly direct debit. If the account has not been settled by the first day of term, the School charges interest on late fee payments and the girl may be refused admission.

COMPOSITION FEES (FEES PAID IN ADVANCE) - Fees may be paid in advance and the School offers a discount of 0.175% per month (2.1% per annum) on lump sums paid as fees in advance. NOTICE OF WITHDRAWAL - A term’s notice must be given in writing addressed to the Headmistress, by the first day of term, or a full term’s fees must be paid and settled immediately upon receipt of final bill. The same applies to any change of boarding / day status, withdrawal from “extra subject” classes or the school buses run by the parents. In all cases of withdrawal the organisers of the relevant service should be notified directly in writing.

BOARDERS’ HEALTH - The cost of medicines prescribed by the School Medical Officer is added to the fees. Charges would also be made in the unlikely event of special nursing being required, or a girl staying in the Medical Centre for part of the holidays. Any extras supplied by Boarding Housemistresses will be added to the girl’s personal account. EXPEDITIONS & ENTERTAINMENTS - Girls are required to submit a slip with their parent’s signature indicating parental permission and acceptance of charge. The cost is added to their personal account. Boarders may have their slips signed by Boarding Housemistresses in some cases. Parents should liaise with the Boarding Housemistress. EXAMINATIONS - All external examinations are charged as extras. INVIGILATIONS - Where special Invigilators are employed for examinations, a proportionate charge will be made to parents.

USEFUL INFORMATION ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE SENIOR SCHOOL - Admission is by assessment, usually held in January, for entry the following September. This includes entry into the Senior School by members of the Prep School. Most girls enter the Senior School at 11, although some places may be available at later stages particularly for 13+ boarders and places are available for the Sixth Form. Means-tested bursaries, up to full fee awards, are available at all entry levels Taster Days and Taster Sleepovers are provided in the Autumn Term prior to entry and are very valuable opportunities for girls to see whether St Catherine’s is the right school for them. Girls sit 11+ entrance examinations in Mathematics, English, Science and Verbal Reasoning, and these are devised by St Catherine’s, based on the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum content. At 12+ - 14+, tests are taken in Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics at the appropriate level. SENIOR SCHOOL ADMISSION’S PROCESS aa Contact Registrar - to book your visit to an Open Morning and to request a School Prospectus

JOINING THE SIXTH FORM - We welcome a number of new girls - day and boarding - into the Sixth Form each year. Assessment is by examination and interview. At registration girls nominate their likely choice of subjects for Sixth Form study and on the Assessment Day will sit three subject specific tests, each of 30 minutes duration, plus an online general paper lasting one hour which gives an indication of IQ and academic potential. Successful candidates are interviewed in person or by Skype. Girls should have a minimum of six GCSEs at Grade B and above, including Maths and English. An A grade is preferable in subjects chosen for A Level study. PREP SCHOOL - Admission is by assessment, usually held in November, for entry the following September for 4+ (32 places), and in January for 5+, 7+ and 9+ (approx. 4 places each). Assessments may be arranged for admission to other age groups if places become vacant. At 4+ girls visit the school for a morning in groups no greater than 8. Through play, teacher observation and teacher/pupil interaction, girls’ literacy, numeracy, physical and social skills are assessed.

aa Early October - Girls registered for 11+ by mid -September of the year prior to entry are invited to our Saturday Taster Morning . Girls attend four mini-lessons to gain an idea of what it is like to be a ‘St Cat’s’ pupil, and have an opportunity to talk with the current students

At all other ages assessment consists of tests in English and Mathematics, written by members of the Departments, respectively, as well as a Verbal Reasoning paper. Each girl will also have an informal opportunity to talk about herself and her interests.

BOTH SCHOOLS - A confidential report from the girl’s previous Head will always be requested, except at 4+, and used as part of the selection procedure. The report requests information about each girl’s academic performance and potential, any specific learning difficulties, how best to manage any disability, and curricular and extra-curricular interests.

Applicants with a disability will be assessed on their academic performance as outlined above. Parents of applicants with a disability should make this clear on the application form so that the School can make every reasonable effort to adapt its admissions procedures to accommodate the applicant on the entrance test day. Any parent of an applicant who has a disability is also asked to let the School know so that proper access can be arranged for pre-admission school visits/ information mailings, and subsequently for school events, should the applicant be successful in the entrance tests. FEES Details of current fees are set out in this booklet (page 19). A full term’s notice in writing must be given before a pupil is either withdrawn from the School, or from the ‘Extra Subject’ classes, or changes from day girl to boarding status or vice versa. Parents become immediately liable for a full term’s fees in lieu of such notice. No remission of fees in respect of absence through illness or for other causes is made by the School itself, but there is a voluntary insurance scheme in operation which enables parents, by paying a small premium, to claim a rebate of fees. Full particulars will be sent on request. The School also runs a Fee Composition scheme (see page 19).

REGULATIONS The School rules - The Traditions of St Catherine’s - are designed to aid the smooth and orderly running of the community. Parents are advised that for serious or persistent breaches of the rules, punishments include loss of privileges, gating and suspension. The Headmistress reserves the right to expel any girl for a serious breach of school discipline or to require her to leave if her general progress and conduct are unsatisfactory. The acceptance of a pupil is on the understanding that she and her parents accept and will conform to the policies of the Governors and the School Rules which may from time to time be amended. SENIOR SCHOOL HOUSES All pupils – boarders or day girls - join one of six School Houses which are named after the School’s founders or former headmistresses: Ashcombe, Merriman, Midleton, Musgrave, Russell-Baker and Stoner. Each House contains about 100 girls from U3 up to U6. There are regular House meetings and activities which the girls enjoy, often leading up to very exciting competitions such as House Drama in the Autumn Term and House Singing held at the end of the Easter Term. Pastoral care at St Catherine’s was identified at our most recent inspection as an outstanding feature of the School with the House system, undoubtedly, making a huge contribution to its success. On joining the School, girls are placed in a House tutor group with their Year 8/Lower 4 shadows. In the Sixth Form, the House system offers plenty of opportunity for extra responsibility and leadership.

CLASS SIZES In lessons, girls have the opportunity to make friends with everyone in their Year, not just their House. In years 7–9 the basic teaching groups are about 22/23 girls, but for practical subjects the number is lower. At GCSE, core subject groups are on average 20 strong, but with some optional subjects having smaller groups. At A Level, an average group will be 8-10 students.

PREP/HOMEWORK Prep is introduced gradually to 11+ entrants in the first term of U3. In Middle School girls are given approximately 20-30 minutes prep per subject and each night they may expect 3-4 preps in total, some of which may need to be done over the weekend. As the girls mature and are looking for more challenging tasks, so the prep increases in line with the girls’ own intellectual capacities. An important factor to remember is that prep should never be so onerous that it becomes all-consuming. Any girl who begins to feel overwhelmed should talk to her tutor who will be able to get to the root of the problem. In most cases the issues are easily and speedily resolved; no girl will learn effectively if she feels unhappy or swamped.

FOOD The Catering at St Catherine’s is first rate and accolades abound. Dining together is a communal activity and emphasis is placed on enabling girls to help themselves quickly to a tasty and nutritious meal and then enjoy time with friends. Whether day girl or boarder, mealtimes at St Catherine’s are social occasions where girls chat and enjoy each other’s company and where there is time to recharge and refresh. Mobile phones are banned! Fees at St Catherine’s are inclusive of all meals. Girls (4-18) and staff, eat in a spacious, brightly decorated, self-service dining room, choosing from a wide selection of hot and cold dishes, including vegetarian options and an attractive salad bar. Aside from a varied general menu plan, the global nature of the boarding community ensures that various international – and home international - holidays are celebrated in food, giving our accomplished Catering Manager the opportunity to prepare some very delicious and exciting national dishes and menus from time to time. Boarders’ dietary requirements are fully catered for throughout each term including three hot meals per day. In addition each Boarding House has its own well equipped kitchen and comfortable common room. High Table is another more formal occasion for the Boarders at the start and end of School terms. For all girls, break and tea are served in the Dining room and at some satellite stations around School to help pupils move quickly to their next lessons. Break and Tea include drinks, fresh fruit and biscuits. Sixth Form students may access a ready supply of coffee, tea or hot chocolate in either of two common rooms or in the Sixth Form Library where a subsidised pay coffee machine supplements, with the offer of freshly ground coffee, the standard drinks which are all freely available. Two lunchtimes per week in the Senior School are designated ‘House Lunches’ where girls eat with their House group, either preceded or followed by House activities. On other days, girls take advantage of the many activities on offer, before or after lunch. ‘Priority Lunch’ is available for those who have regular activities such as netball, lacrosse, Choir, LAMDA, Chess … the list is a long one! When there are school trips, packed lunches are provided for everyone by the School kitchen. Specific dietary requirements can easily be catered for. St Catherine’s is a ‘nut free’ school.

OFF-SITE ACTIVITIES A variety of trips take place each year to enhance the girls’ educational experience. Parents must give permission before their daughter can take part in any off-site activity. In the case of boarders, the relevant Boarding House Mistress may give the necessary permission in loco parentis. Parents update their daughters’ dietary and medical details on an annual rolling programme to ensure that staff taking trips have the most up to date and relevant information available. No girl may join a trip unless an up to date annual form has been received.

Trips are generally invoiced in arrears on account. In the case of excursions or tours which are considerably more expensive parents may pay in agreed, pre-determined instalments. As participation in Activities Week is compulsory for all the girls apart from the U6, the associated costs are already included within the school fees. Activities Week takes place during the penultimate week of the Summer Term. It involves all girls in the Senior School from U3 to L6. It is a week which broadens the girls’ education, introducing them to activities and experiences they may not have encountered previously. Careful thought goes into ensuring girls are offered activities which suit their interests and levels of maturity.

SPIRITUALITY St Catherine’s is a Church of England foundation and proud of its Christian tradition. Our chapel, dedicated in 1894 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, is a special place, being both beautiful and also a place of calm and peace. All members of our community can come to the Chapel at breaktimes or after school for times of quiet reflection or prayer if they wish to. Every girl, from age 4 to 18 will attend a short Chapel service once a week, in an age appropriate grouping, at which the School’s own chaplain will officiate. The boarding community also has its own Wednesday evening service. Girls do not need to be members of the Christian faith to attend St Catherine’s but will need to feel comfortable to be in Chapel each week and ready to listen to the messages that lie at the heart of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Services take a broad theme for the term and ideas of many kinds are explored from a Christian perspective. The Chaplain invites visiting speakers, including the local Parish priests, to speak at services, bringing new perspectives to our spiritual thinking and development. The School has strong links with the local parish church of Holy Trinity, Bramley, and on feast days such as St Catherine’s Day or Ash Wednesday, services are shared with the parish church. Boarders attend Sunday services in the parish and have opportunities to contribute through music and choir, bellringing and helping with Junior Church. Each year there is an opportunity for girls to be confirmed. The girls are prepared for this by the Chaplain and we celebrate the Confirmation Service in the Chapel which is conducted by either the Bishop of Guildford or the Bishop of Dorking. The School Motto – ‘Let us go on…’ is taken from the Book of Hebrews, Chapter VI, v I, and was the text used by the Archbishop of Canterbury at the Chapel’s dedication service in 1894. It is a simple motto which, with great clarity, invites us to move forward, not look back with regret or wasted energy to what cannot be changed, and to be persistent and courageous in our moving forwards.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY/ DIGITAL LEARNING St Catherine’s believes mobile technology plays an integral part in the way education is delivered and consumed. We already have a site-wide wireless infrastructure, designed to manage the constantly growing population of wireless devices. Other developments include Apple TVs in every classroom, and a virtualised server infrastructure enabling St Catherine’s to honour its status as an ‘eco-school’ by reducing the number of servers in use and the associated electricity and cooling requirements. It is compulsory for all girls from LII (Year 5) to U5 (Year 11) to have an iPad which must be used, along with all other mobile devices, in accordance with St Catherine’s ICT Code of Practice which all girls and parents must sign (see the Code of Practice under policies on the School website). The School also supports the use of Apple iMacs across Senior and Prep School sites, allowing students to experience a diverse IT environment. St Catherine’s utilises the latest educational tools from Apple and Google, and parents are offered support with their daughters’ mobile devices via focused school events as well as a comprehensive Parent’s Guide to iPad, delivered via iTunes U. The Director of Technologies is always available to discuss the purchasing of mobile devices by parents on behalf of their daughters to ensure compatibility with the St Catherine’s network. He will also advise on security issues and online safety.

THE ST CATHERINE’S ASSOCIATION The Association was founded in 2004 with the aim of drawing together all the constituent groups making up the broad community of St Catherine’s: current and former pupils, parents, staff, Governors, members of the local community and other friends and supporters of the School. There is a vibrant annual programme of events including a public choral concert performed by the Association Choir, Association Day, regional lunches and drinks plus full scale alumnae reunions at school, special interest trips overseas, careers forums, lectures, archive displays and even wine tasting! There are always events in our programme for current parents as well as former pupils and staff. Current pupils benefit enormously from a global network of contacts with former pupils and parents for career and university advice together with work experience opportunities.

DEVELOPMENT The School is very grateful to all those who choose to support St Catherine’s financially. THE PTA Both the Prep and Senior School PTAs play an important part in school life and offer invaluable support to all parents. In the Prep School several parents from each year group act as class PTA Representatives who are co-ordinated by The Chair and a small Committee. Reps organise regular class social events for parents and children - from coffee mornings to camping. The Committee also offers whole school events such as a May Fair and annual Autumn Picnic. The Senior School PTA continues to act as an important channel between parents and the School. The PTA offers a range of events throughout the year, including a lively quiz night, a very popular Christmas party and curry suppers for the parents of the Middle School years. The Committee comprises parents and teachers from across the year groups, who offer their time on a voluntary basis. In both schools, all funds raised are donated to the School via the Annual Fund to spend on equipment and facilities that will enhance the girls’ education.

The shop accepts cash, cheques (payable to St Catherine’s Enterprises Ltd.) and credit/debit cards. Parents may also order and pay over the phone using a credit/debit card. Boarders can purchase uniform and have the costs added to their bills with the approval of their Boarding Housemistress.

TRAVEL St Catherine’s enjoys a wonderful, spacious campus in the Surrey Hills, just three miles outside Guildford in a delightful rural location, with all its facilities on the school site. Transport to and from School can be managed in several ways and we encourage girls to become more independent about travelling once at the Senior School. First, and in line with our School Sustainability Policy, we encourage all prospective day pupils to explore carefully the public transport options to reach school. Regular bus services run between Horsham, Cranleigh and Guildford before and after school. The bus stops are immediately outside the school gates. These buses can also link up with the train services to both Guildford and Shalford stations. The School operates a bus service to and from Guildford Station each morning and evening. Parents may request a list of the contact details of other St Catherine’s families living in their or adjacent post code areas so that lift shares can be set up. Finally, some very kind parent volunteers organise buses to and from popular locations such as Farnham, Woking and Haslemere etc, including some late buses after activities end at 5.30 p.m. As there are sometimes waiting lists to sign up for these buses you may wish to email the Senior School Registrar for contact details. The organisers also ask all parents opting to use these routes to be ready to take a turn in helping co-ordinate the bus route during their daughter’s time at the School. HOW TO FIND US BY AIR Heathrow and Gatwick (both 45 minutes by road) are within easy reach of Bramley. Both have regular scheduled flights to all parts of the United Kingdom, Europe and international destinations.

BY RAIL There are regular trains from Waterloo to Guildford every 15 minutes and the journey takes approximately 40 minutes. There are also frequent stopping trains via Wimbledon and Weybridge.

BY ROAD St Catherine’s is situated three miles south of Guildford on the A281, Horsham Road. Using your SAT NAV key in Station Road, Bramley, Guildford, Surrey GU5 0DF.

FROM THE NORTH If travelling from the M25, exit at junction 10 and join the A3. From other northerly directions head for the A3. Leave the A3 south of Guildford taking the turning to Godalming following signs for the B3000. Drive through Compton village until you reach a roundabout. Take the first exit onto the A3100. At the second roundabout take the second exit onto the A248 crossing the canal. At the T-junction turn left (no right turn) and then almost immediately go right around the roundabout following signs towards Horsham on the A281. On entering Bramley, after about 2 miles, turn left by the BP petrol station at the mini roundabout onto Station Road. St Catherine’s Senior School is the first entrance on the left hand side, and the Prep. School entrance is second on the right.

FROM THE SOUTH COAST Join the A24 and travel for approx 18 miles to Horsham. Exit the A24 by the slip road and at the roundabout take the first exit left onto the A264. Continue straight across the next roundabout and at the following roundabout take the second exit joining the A281, signposted Guildford. Travel along the A281 for approximately 15 miles and on entering Bramley at the roundabout near the petrol station turn right onto Station Road. St Catherine’s Senior School is the first entrance on the left hand side, and the Prep. School entrance is second on the right.
