A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS

Sydney Theatre Company’s education program (STC Ed) has been providing young people with an array of theatre experiences since 1981. It’s a core element of the Company which we continuously examine, re-imagine and adapt in response to changes in the education landscape. In 2012, STC Ed is front and centre of the Main Stage season. Pygmalion, directed by Peter Evans with Jessica Marais as Eliza Doolittle, promises to be a stunning production of a wonderful play from the syllabus. An unprecedented number of tickets will be available for students to access this Main Stage production so they can see theatre at its best. We are also delighted to present Fools Island with the extraordinary Darren Gilshenan, plus a variety of School Days, Readings and Workshops.

But wait. What about the regions? We want students to experience theatre on as many levels and as often as possible. Following the tremendous success of STC’s regional outreach project, People of the Soil, the Company is once again setting out into regional NSW, in search of vibrant, new and timely stories. The 12-month engagement will be a series of immersive drama-based experiences across several high schools and community groups. This project will have two important outcomes: a new production ready for touring, and a contemporary, relevant publication for all high school students. Also heading out to regional NSW for the first time, will be our School Drama module, now in its fourth year. The success of our co-mentoring program for primary school teachers, developed with The University of Sydney, has been inspiring, and we look forward to its continued adoption in schools across the state. We want our productions to inspire and engage students in theatre; our partnerships with teachers to raise expectations of their own and their student’s creativity; and to help smash the geographic barrier to experiencing good theatre. Enjoy yourselves!

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

PYGMALION

BY GEORGE BERNARD SHAW

In one of the great transformative tales of all time, a feral young flower seller glimpses an opportunity to elevate herself in society and boldly snatches at it, naïve to the potential cost of doing so. It’s a decision that sees the now iconic character Eliza Doolittle transported into the aristocratic world of one Professor Henry Higgins where she becomes the subject of a wager between the phonetics expert and his friend Colonel Pickering. Higgins bets that within six months he can turn the wild, Cockney Eliza into a lady so refined she could pass for a duchess. George Bernard Shaw’s enduringly popular play Pygmalion has in turn inspired interpretations as diverse as My Fair Lady, Educating Rita and the nineties’ high school flick She’s All That. Shaw’s story is one of rags to relative riches but his Eliza is no Cinderella and Higgins is certainly no Prince Charming. In Peter Evans’ new production the vivacious Jessica Marais from television’s Packed to the Rafters will play the original feisty flower-girl.

WHY BOOK? ~ Perfect for HSC Standard English – Experience Through Language: Distinctive Voices ~ Great links for discussing language, social class, gender, role and character ~ An exciting new production of George Bernard Shaw’s classic play ~ Wonderful introduction to theatre for younger students

STC ED PRESENTS TAMARAMA ROCK SURFERS THEATRE COMPANY’S

FOOLS ISLAND

BY DARREN GILSHENAN AND CHRIS HARRIS

Twins. One clown, one villain. Both shipwrecked from an asteroid, on a tiny desert island. One bent on creation, the other destruction. A tale of discovery, love, lust, cuckoldry and revenge. Written by renowned actor Darren Gilshenan and Chris Harris (UK), with additional dramaturgy by John Bell, Toby Schmitz and Jo Turner, Fools Island combines Shakespeare’s words with hilarious physical clowning, created through improvisation and devising. The show is performed by the ultimate Shakespeare clown, Darren Gilshenan. He plays both twin brothers (one good, one not so good), as well as a dog, a cat, a mother, a father, a sister, a nurse, a silent movie hero and heroine, an evil maniac, a goat, a bottle, a rock – to name a few! Every word is Shakespeare’s and every action beautifully combines Darren’s unique skills with director Jo Turner’s extensive physical theatre experience. Fools Island offers a rare opportunity for students and teachers, and contains all of the elements particular to IPs for the HSC.

WHY BOOK? ~ Outstanding example of physical theatre, clowning and individual performance ~ Demonstrates multiple character play, imaginative use of space, mime, soundscape and multiple styles of performance ~ Great introduction to Shakespeare for students in Years 7 – 10 ~ One of Australia’s finest physical performers

Often theatre companies, as part of their selection process, will assemble a group of artists to do a reading in order to see the bare bones of the text, rather than just read scripts in a vacuum. Here is an opportunity for school audiences to eavesdrop on a performance-making process, as well as getting an unadorned hearing of the play. A rehearsed reading, while not a full production, has tremendous power to transport the listener into the world of the play, feel its rhythms and be introduced to its characters. Readings present the play in this purest of form allowing the listener to fill in what’s unsaid and think critically about what they’re seeing.

THE

It’s not always possible to create productions of HSC plays students are studying; however in 2012 STC Ed is offering students the opportunity to experience two HSC Drama syllabus plays read by professional actors.

Each play will be rehearsed prior to presentation by leading theatre directors and there will be an opportunity after the reading for students to discuss what they’ve just experienced with the actors.

Stolen BY JANE HARRISON

2 MAY 10am 3 MAY 10am & 1pm 4 MAY 10am 2HRS (NO INTERVAL) SYDNEYTHEATRE.COM.AU/STCED/STOLEN

This workshop presentation will introduce your students to this important Australian play. The Stolen characters tell and enact their individual stories from childhood to adulthood. They are linked by having been stolen from their families and placed in the same children’s home at different times between the 1940s and 1960s. Stolen is based on the real life testimonies of members of the Stolen Generation. Students will watch key scenes of Stolen to experience the direct and realistic language, hear personal accounts of the actors and reflect on the play’s modern resonances. The selected scenes will be woven together with commentary on the historical and political context within the play.

“ A personal and professional encounter that was a gift to the students and to us …insightful and generous conversation about the text, the process of interpreting the text and the importance of the issues it explores was gold. It was an even richer experience than seeing the production alone. The workshop created a theatrical experience which is so central to appreciating and understanding a theatrical text.” Teacher & HSC Marker, 2011 Stolen Workshop

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY, FORCE MAJEURE AND SYDNEY FESTIVAL PRESENT

NEVER DID ME ANY HARM DEVISED BY FORCE MAJEURE

Over the past few decades the word ‘parenting’ has crept insidiously, almost imperceptibly, into our vernacular, bringing with it increasing anxiety around issues of raising children. Is the pressure to get it right overwhelming us? And what is good ‘parenting’ anyway? Are children today given too much choice? Too few boundaries? Less chance to take risks? Are they protected from notions of failure? Sexualised too young? Drawing inspiration from Christos Tsiolkas’ best-selling novel The Slap, Director Kate Champion and her company interviewed a sample of people of all ages and backgrounds to garner their views on the subject of parenting. In a familiar yet disconcertingly Lynchian Aussie backyard six actors and dancers create myriad familiar characters from the verbatim text collected. This will be a fascinating School Day as young people have the chance to consider parenting and perhaps ponder what it means for them?

LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES BY CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON FROM THE NOVEL BY CHODERLOS DE LACLOS

Unaware of the impending revolution that breathlessly waits to devour the French aristocracy in all its decadence, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont plot an elaborate game of revenge, seduction, humiliation and cruelty. It is a salon amusement that soon morphs into a brutal battle between former lovers. Hugo Weaving and Pamela Rabe will play the charismatic duo that manipulates with the precision and discipline of master puppeteers, deriving a pleasure from spite that can only be surpassed by the pleasure of watching the deliciously wicked pair in action. The sexual politics at work in this gripping drama are as relevant now as when Laclos wrote the novel in 1782 and when Christopher Hampton adapted it for stage in 1985. Avoiding the lavish clichés often associated with the period, this new production will acid-wash a familiar story, stripping it back to its essential layers.

UNDER MILK WOOD A PLAY WITH VOICES BY DYLAN THOMAS

A chorus of voices will beckon students into the small Welsh town of Llareggub, through streets, houses, bedrooms and on into the townspeople’s dreams. Borne along by beautiful voices and rich musical language, we follow the residents as they wake, rise, go about their day then drink and prepare to dream again. Through sketches and caricatures we glimpse moments in the life of the small town. An elegy for a time past, Dylan Thomas’ exquisite play for voices was written to prove that there could still be beauty in a post-nuclear world. Like Wilder’s Our Town, Under Milk Wood is a warming celebration of humanity that also casts a cool eye on failed relationships, thwarted lives and the oppressive clutter of small town existence. Under Milk Wood features a cast of magnificent voices – headed by Jack Thompson playing the role Dylan Thomas imagined for himself but never got a chance to play.

AUSTRALIA DAY BY JONATHAN BIGGINS

For the members of the Australia Day committee in the small country town of Coriole, the issue of cultural identity is prickly to say the least. If they could agree on what kind of Australia they are celebrating, they might be able to tackle the really big questions. Does a sausage sizzle code as mono-cultural? And should the special needs kids be forced to perform their dance routine on the national day? Suffice to say that with a committee comprising of an ambitious Liberal Mayor, a Greens Councillor, a bigoted builder, an Australian-born Vietnamese school teacher and a member of the CWA, rolling out the Australia Day celebrations will be as complex and controversial as carbon pricing. This wickedly funny new play from stalwart of political satire, Jonathan Biggins, was inspired by his own experiences as an Australia Day Ambassador and will be realised by the comic genius of veteran director Richard Cottrell.

One evening, the silence of the isolated property is broken by the sound of a car spluttering to a stop. An aboriginal man and woman come to the door for help and reluctantly Georgie allows them into her house. Author Tim Winton, a household name on account of his magnificent novels, has only very recently turned his attention to writing for the stage. Signs of Life is Winton’s second stage play and like Cloudstreet, this is a work of magical realism where the dead speak with and watch over the living. THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE BY W.S. GILBERT & A. SULLIVAN

On December 10th, 1879, Arthur Sullivan wrote a letter to his mother about a new opera, upon which he was hard at work in New York. “I think that it will be a great success, for it is exquisitely funny and the music is strikingly tuneful.” True enough, The Pirates of Penzance was an immediate hit and takes its place today as one of the most popular and enduring pieces of Gilbert & Sullivan’s work. In 2010, Sasha Regan’s extraordinary all-male production of The Pirates of Penzance became a huge hit when it transferred from the tiny Union Theatre to Wilton’s Music Hall, London and was named Best Off-West End Production at The What’s On Stage Awards. This exquisitely funny and entirely fresh take on The Pirates of Penzance is a joyful excursion for students to experience music, comedy and high-camp!

THEATRE IN COMMUNITIES

THE

NEW ENGLAND PROJECT DIRECTOR SUSANNA DOWLING WRITER JO TURNER

Continuing the tremendous success of STC Ed’s innovative outreach project People of the Soil, the Company is once again setting out into regional NSW, in search of vibrant, new and timely stories. In 2012 STC Ed will be beginning this adventure in the New England region. The 12-month engagement will begin with STC artists co-developing with local teachers and community leaders a series of immersive dramabased experiences across several high schools and community groups. At the core of this program are multiple artist residencies delivering a range of workshops during and after school, teacher master classes and mentoring opportunities for young people across the theatre-making process.

STC Ed’s regional outreach program will again culminate with STC commissioning and producing a new production created and performed by STC artists, however this time we will also be auditioning young people to perform in the final performance ensemble. Finally, STC Ed will publish the new play, complete with details of the workshops, and make this resource available to schools across the state early 2013. STC Ed’s long-standing outreach programs have demonstrated they offer important learning opportunities for regional students, enhance teachers’ work in schools, celebrate the diversity of communities and facilitate new connections for young people. It is with great enthusiasm that we embark on the latest incarnation of this joyful and rewarding program!

SCHOOL DRAMA

In partnership with The University of Sydney, Sydney Theatre Company’s School Drama program is entering its fourth year. School Drama is an inspiring professional development program for primary school teachers that has drama pedagogy at its core. School Drama promotes and demonstrates how drama is a powerful medium for the teaching of English and literacy in young learners. School Drama is a teacher professional learning program that takes place as a partnership between an STC Teaching Artist and the classroom teacher over a term.

Drama as a medium for improving literacy outcomes is becoming recognised world wide… (Ackroyd 2000; Baldwyn 1998; Ewing and Simons 2004; O’Toole 2002).

20

School Drama strategies can be integrated into any area of literacy from K – 6. Examples may include narrative writing, speaking and listening and/or student engagement. School Drama begins with a teacher professional development workshop then collectively, the teacher, STC Ed and The University of Sydney create a 7-week team-teaching program tailored to each class’ individual learning aspirations. Then the fun begins! The artist comes to the school and team-teaches the program with the teacher each week for 7 weeks, modeling the drama-based strategies empowering them to carry these ideas into their regular teaching practice. STC Ed and The University of Sydney are resolute in our commitment to create a drama-based program that increases teachers’ confidence and capacity in the Arts, which in turn, improves literacy outcomes in primary students. Ongoing research and evaluation of School Drama has shown it is a tremendous opportunity for teachers at any stage of their careers to participate in a unique and dynamic collaboration between artists and educators.

From the participant teachers…

“ We have been involved in the program since it was first implemented and we would love to continue participating. We have found great benefits to student confidence, participation and performance in all aspect of English and other KLAs.” “ STC’s School Drama 2010 was a most positive and wonderful experience for every student in my class and for me, their teacher. I am very interested in developing the skills of the whole Photos by Tracey Schramm child – to develop relationships and deepen their understanding of not “ Well who’d have thought that drama only literacy and numeracy but also could actually be so engaging to teach? about people and the world. To see I have had a wonderful time being this developing through drama was part of STC’s School Drama program exciting and inspiring.” – it has been an inspirational journey for me. Although my learning curve was a steep one, I can see a whole range of ways that drama can be incorporated into the curriculum. Thank you for being a patient and confidence-building teacher.”

STC YAP

SYDNEYTHEATRE.COM.AU/YAP

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR STUDENTS STC YAP is the STC’s Under 30s Youth Advisory Panel. STC YAP was conceived in 2009 to foster and develop a conversation with young people in Sydney in order to ensure the STC is a welcoming, relevant and vibrant place to experience the Arts. The panel is self-determining and made up of 10 to 12 young people aged 16 to 30. The Panel organises their own exclusive behind-the-scenes events for its peers, post-performance gatherings, online discussions, music nights, special ticket offers and heaps more.

YAP Special Event Nights feature a pre-show party and a post-show Q & A, followed by live music at The Wharf Sessions. Perhaps your students might be interesting in joining the community? If so they can access and join the STC YAP network via Facebook and keep up to date with the latest YAP events, access heavily discounted tickets, be part of STC’s under 30s audiences and join in the conversation! We salute our 2011 YAPpers for all their wonderful work. Alex Berlage, Dominic Bock, Emma Cole, Michael Cutrupi, Harriet Gillies, Laura Hopkinson, Helen Machalias, Sean Marshall, Pristine Ong, Melissa Vogt and Marisa Wright Smith. YAP Special Event Nights in 2012 are:

“ YAP = Amazing. Seriously, an excellent idea.” Student

SUSTAINABILITY IN THE THEATRE

LEARN ABOUT THE PROJECT

Theatre has always stimulated visionary conversations and practical action around the challenging issues of our time. As a Company, STC believes climate change is a critically important issue.

Visiting The Wharf For a comprehensive and interactive behindthe-scenes look at the entire project, your students can use the STC Green Screens at The Wharf. There’s plenty to explore including using responsibly-sourced timber in our workshops, reduced lighting wattage in our theatres, and re-use/recycle practices.

Greening The Wharf is our commitment to reduce our environmental impact, and provides an example of how all organisations (including schools) can help tackle climate change. We believe our scale and comprehensive approach to sustainability is a world first for any theatre company of our size. The award-winning project has transformed an historic wharf into an outstanding, practical and comprehensive demonstration of 21st century sustainability practice – and includes the second largest roof-top solar array in Australia, an innovative rainwater harvesting system and sustainability influencing our design process for STC productions.

Online Materials STC will share our greening transformation via the above dedicated website due to be available from December 2011. Case studies, videos and images will chart our journey of Greening The Wharf. A great resource for students looking for information and case studies in support of the National Curriculum’s general capability ‘Sustainability’.

ONLINE

STC ARCHIVES

STC Ed’s online resources are tailor-made to take students deeper into the experience of each STC production. Each year STC Ed creates specific behind-the-scenes content for STC productions, which illuminates the processes involved in creating theatre.

Sydney Theatre Company Archives, situated on Pier 4, preserves the significant administrative records (such as annual reports, marketing and promotional material) and production records (including many treasures from our previous productions such as scripts, prompt copies, posters, designs, production photographs, programs, reviews, archival recordings and STC Ed resource kits) created by or for the Company.

Students can view images and designs, follow rehearsal blogs, watch insightful video clips of directors and performers, post their own comments, submit their reviews and read about what others have said about the show. These resources also offer background to the play, its style and form, themes and ideas, as well as pre-performance activities designed to prepare students for seeing the show and post-performance activities that can be used in the classroom to explore the production in greater depth.

Students and teachers wishing to conduct research on the Company are welcome to make an appointment with Archivist Judith Seeff on (02) 9250 1745 or email jseeff@sydneytheatre.com.au.

STC Ed is continually adding to its online resources, and don’t forget teachers can still check back on STC resources for past years!

STC Archives is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am – 5pm.

Visit us at sydneytheatre.com.au/stced throughout the year as this collection grows.

STC Archives is an amazing source of materials for students studying Individual Project: Design.

Please note that there is an archival research service fee of $10 and photocopies are 30¢ a page.

On request small groups of students are able to come to the Company and meet with our production staff to discuss particular aspects of their profession and working practice at STC. This may involve discussions with our lighting, stage management, costume or sound departments. Groups are limited to 20 students and are arranged at a mutually convenient time. There is a small charge of $10 per student. Teachers are invited to contact STC Ed to discuss their particular areas of interest. Contact education@sydneytheatre.com.au
