Bamboo, incised with bone and tooth Trumpets used to announce the successful return from a headhunting expedition also play a diverse role in Asmat celebration and feast. Bamboo is uncommon in coastal Asmat and is found in flotsam or traded down from elevated inland areas. This specimen from the Safan cultural group. Title: Spear West Papua New Guinea, ca. 1997. Hardwood The Asmat are seldom far from their Spears and Om, a more utilitarian version. Used in defense and for offensive warfare, spears are named for an ancestor and often decorated intricately. Om have a flattened end for digging and prying, and serve also as a walking stick for the less steady. This specimen from the Safan cultural group, village of Ocenep which is thought to have been responsible for the demise of Michael Rockefeller in 1962.
