Title: Spear West Papua New Guinea, ca. 1997. Hardwood The Asmat are seldom far from their Spears and Om, a more utilitarian version. Used in defense and for offensive warfare, spears are named for an ancestor and often decorated intricately. Om have a flattened end for digging and prying, and serve also as a walking stick for the less steady. This specimen from the Safan cultural group, village of Ocenep which is thought to have been responsible for the demise of Michael Rockefeller in 1962.
