Our Philosophy

The Iona Peak Performing Arts Academy is part of our commitment to inspire young musicians, dancers, actors and vocalists to continue to excel and pursue a lifelong passion for their artforms.

The Academy believes that performing arts equips those passionate and diligent with skills that are more than a hobby or a brief professional pursuit. It’s a call to greatness and an opportunity to contribute and make a difference.

This philosophy is based on the belief that talent is valuable but that effort combined with a desire to grow and achieve make a sustainable career possible. Students will be mentored with techniques and skills that will instil self-discipline, technique and a positive work ethic.

The Academy is centred around developing the whole person in readiness with multiple skills across the performing arts to help prepare for a career in the realm of the entertainment industry. This means developing making, composing and entrepreneurial skills so that students feel confident in seeking casual or contractual employment in their skilled areas to be able to support themselves working across a range of areas in the industry. From performer to director, to sound and lights production assistant, stage manager, film maker, editor or even theatre barista! Our aim is to be able to provide as many skills and experiences possible for each child to benefit.

EXPECTATIONS

6

To agree to the conditions of the Academy, the students and families need to understand the importance of the bespoke journey that will be scoped for them in collaboration with the Director of Performing Arts, the students and their families.

Partaking in Performing Arts Co-curricular and Co-curricular Plus (User Pay) Programs and Academy Students Ongoing Commitment and Membership to Performing Arts Groups and Ensembles.

Academy students have been selected for their vocational interests and ability to manage a greater balance of performing arts training experiences with the goal to develop a well rounded preparedness for further study and career pursuants in the realm of the performing arts industry.

It is an expectation that each Academy student is involved in a range of co-curricular and/or co-curricular plus (user pay) activities. Students and families need to understand that the work of Academy students needs to be at the forefront of the performing arts profile of the school and Academy students hold the honour of being Ambassadors of the Performing Arts Academy within the school.

Attendance and Participation in Workshops and Masterclasses.

The Director of Performing Arts will work closely with families and students to ensure that the workshops provided will be designed for best fit with their skills and abilities. To make the workshop worthwhile for a number of Academy students and be able to invite other performing arts students to partake in the workshop. The main service of the workshop may be delivered to a broader audience to encompass a larger group of students. However, as part of the workshop and masterclass experience, the experience will also have smaller tutorial components to be able to work closely with Academy students to refine skills and offer specialised guidance in their areas of interest.

7

This will mean that workshops brought to the School for the benefit of chosen Academy students are indeed purposefully designed with a selection of students in mind in order for the experience to provide skills and connection for the students in their chosen areas of expertise.

No Prima Ballerinas or Prima Ballerinos!

The Academy recognises that the Iona Peak experience is a bespoke approach to navigating the curriculum in secondary school. However, it is only for those who are self-motivated, proactive in their learning and already have a willingness to perform and work collaboratively with their like minded peers and their teachers. Academy students will be challenged with an immersive approach to developing their skills across multiple artforms linked to the performing arts industry. Students must be able to listen to and implement feedback given by their mentors, teachers, Alumni connections and industry guests. Personalised feedback is designed to enrich each student on their bespoke journey.

Throughout their Academy experience, we expect that students and families treat all faculty teachers, industry guests and workshop leaders as well as Alumni connections with utmost respect. The Academy is only as successful as the commitment, respect and energy brought to it by students, families and the teachers and alumni. Any disrespect, demands or undermining the importance of the programs will result in the termination of the agreement and the membership of you child in the Academy. If a termination of agreement occurs there will be no refunds returned.

The Right Academy Attitude for Students and Families

Academy students are expected to immerse themselves fully in each learning experience. The Academy experiences will be delivered in a range of formats.
