HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHAKESPEARE!

To celebrate the birthday of one of the greatest playwrights in English Literature, the English Department performed extracts from some of William Shakespeare's most famous plays Pupils enjoyed guessing the play from which the extract was taken, and had a chuckle at some interesting and questionable acting!

An interview with Matthew Hewson, Year 12 A Level Literature student, on his reading experiences.

I love to read because it helps me to relax at home I usually read in the afternoons I chose to study A level English Literature because I enjoy reading which is partly why English Literature was my best GCSE grade. I also really enjoy the way the subject is taught, which allows lots of opportunities to discuss and debate different interpretations of characters and plots. My favourite text is a play called A Streetcar Named Desire which is an American play written by Tennessee Williams.

I am currently reading Homer's The Odyssey which details the epic adventure of Odysseus I really enjoy Greek and Roman mythology

What is your favourite book and why? One of my favourite books is The Girl with the Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier and I also love The Kite Runner by Khaled Hossieni .This was a tricky question though because there are so many amazing books

Where and when do you most like to read? I love to read on the sofa or in bed at night I usually have coffee or a glass of wine with me!

Why do you enjoy reading? I adore reading because it teaches me about other cultures or how people live I learn about history and fascinating events, but I am always transported to somewhere else!

How can you support your son's reading at home?

Allocate at least 20 minutes each evening to reading (maybe just before bed). Read aloud with/to your son your
