HOBNOX EVOLUTION FESTIVAL Was haben unsere Eltern uns nicht in den Ohren gelegen mit Woodstock?! Die Bürde der späten Geburt hielt uns in ehrfürchtiger Pose verharrend am Küchentisch, während Vater uns seinen kleinen Restposten Coolness aufs Brot schmierte. Schluss damit, der Morgen des 29.02.2008 wird eine neue Ära am Frühstückstisch einläuten. Am Abend zuvor wird das „Hobnox Evolution Festival“ im Berliner Tresor nämlich stark gegen die Hausordnung verstoßen und mit den Live-Acts Puppetmastaz (Louisville Records), Calvin Harris (Ministry of Sound), sowie den DJs Missill (Paris), Sick Girls (Berlin), Tobias Thomas (Köln) und Pantha du Prince (Hamburg) mehr Putz von den Wänden holen als schlecht ausgebildete Bauarbeiter. Hand drauf!

The curse of being born a few decades too late had us glued to the kitchen table in awe, while dad would gleefully impress upon us the remnants of his coolness. Enough is enough! BOOMBAKER Boombaker schreiben sich auf die Fahnen elektronische, pumpende Tanzmusik in einem kollektiven Bandkonzept zu fabrizieren. Im Stile der Neubauten wird da Metallschrott perkussiv bearbeitet. Die Energie des Punk und das Flair einer Brooklyn-Block-Party werden zu einer Berliner Melange verrührt, die mit wilden Videokompositionen abgerundet wird. Besonders charmant ist, dass Boombaker ihren genreübergreifenden Musikmix einfach Rock’n’Roll nennen.
Boombaker set sail into the seas of drum’n’bass as a band on a mission! They bring a punkband-like energy level and a funky Brooklyn-style block party vibe to electronic music. They bang out percussions on metal scraps and tease the eyes with wacky video compositions while their crazy MC strains his vocal chords to the point of no return. Best of all, when asked exactly what they’re doing, they say it’s only Rock’n’Roll. Boom!
MIKI Miki, professioneller Violinist aus Düsseldorf, steckt sein Herz seit 13 Jahren in die Produktion von HipHop-Tracks. Im Oktober 2007 brachte er nach langer und harter Planung sein Projekt „Opus 1“ auf die Bühne, das klassische Elemente mit HipHop verbindet. Sein Konzept überzeugte einige bekannte Rapper, u.a. Curse, Mellow Mark oder Reen, die ihm für dieses Konzert, begleitet von einem 40-köpfigen Orchester, ihre Stimme liehen. Ein einzigartiges Konzept, das seinesgleichen sucht.
For over 13 years Miki, professional violinist from Düsseldorf, has been putting all his heart and soul into producing Hip Hop tracks. In October of 2007, he premiered his project „Opus 1“ on stage, combining classical elements with Hip Hop. His concept convinced a couple of famous German rappers (Curse, Mellow Mark and Reen) to join him on stage with a 40-piece classical orchestra for a performance. A unique concept, unequalled.

FINALISTS HAGEZUSSA Kalt und düster ist die Welt von Hagezussa. In ferner Zukunft liegt unsere Zivilisation schon lange in Trümmern. Die Menschheit ist vom Aussterben bedroht. Dieser Film erzählt die Geschichte einer Schrottsammler-Familie, die in dieser bedrohlichen Welt ums Überleben kämpft, nach einem Märchen der Gebrüder Grimm. Der Trailer wurde extra für „Hobnox Evolution“ gedreht. Das Ziel der Produzenten ist ein Langfilm fürs Kino. Ein Sieg beim Festival wäre ein wichtiger Schritt in diese Richtung.
The cold and bleak world of Hagezussa lies in some distant future. Civilisation as we know it lies in ruins and mankind is close to extinction. This movie is based on a tale by the Brothers Grimm and it tells the story about a salvager family who are struggling to survive in this threatening world. The trailer for this movie was shot exclusively for the “Hobnox Evolution”. The objective of the contestants is to produce a feature film for the cinema. Winning the “Hobnox Evolution Festival” would bring them a step closer to realizing that dream!

FARM CONNECTION Ein Dachs namens Dex jagt einen Ganter namens Gus zu funky 70er Jahre Musik in diesem Projekt von Studenten der Kölner International Film School. Hmm, ein Dachs jagt eine Gans? Richtig, es handelt sich um einen Zeichentrickfilm alter Schule. Mehr Tom & Jerry als Futurama. Das unblutige Spektakel ist kinderfreundlich inszeniert, kann aber auch ältere Semester mit liebevollem Pinselstrich für sich gewinnen. Immerhin fühlten sich mehr als 1100 User zum voten genötigt.
This project from the International Film School, Cologne presents a badger (named Dex) who chases a gander (named Gus) around a farm to a groovy 70s soundtrack. What’s a badger doing hunting a gander? You’re watching an old school animated cartoon! Think Tom & Jerry instead of Futurama. This non-violent spectacle is staged in a child friendly way but its love for detail will surely win over the older generation, too. More than 1100 users voted for this submission!

FINALISTS KICKT? Mit dem Multimediakünstler Tofa und seinem Projekt „Kickt?“ hat der Hobnox Evolution Contest einen dicken Fisch an Land gezogen, der seit fast zehn Jahren Visuals für Drum ‘n’ Bass-, Techno- und Electro-Größen wie Aphrodite, Westbam, Felix da Housecat oder Miss Djax konzipiert. Sein Werk umfasst aber auch Arbeiten für das renommierte Berliner Street-Art-Event „Backjumps“ und passenderweise für unsere Location, den Tresor, der ihn als „artist in residence“ führt.
Multimedia artist Tofa and his project “Kickt?” are a good example of the creativity that Hobnox has been searching for- and finding! He has been creating visuals for various Drum ‘n’ Bass, Techno and Electro acts, such as Aphrodite, Westbam, Felix da Housecat and Miss Djax. His resume also includes pieces for renown Berlin Street Art event Backjumps and, coincidentally, for our location tonight, the Tresor, where he is “artist in residence”.
ARTRMX COLOGNE „WHERE IS MY MIND?“ lautet die Aufgabenstellung von ARTRMX COLOGNE VOL.01. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Kunstfestival, das vom 22. bis 31. August 2008 natürlich – nomen est omen – in Köln stattfindet. Die Veranstalter planen, ungewöhnliche Orte mit ausgefallenen Kunstprojekten zu bespielen. Die Künstler sollen sich fragen, wo sie mit ihren Gedanken stehen, was ihre Perspektive auf die Welt von heute ist. Kurz, die Teilnehmer sollen sich fragen „WHERE IS MY MIND?“
„WHERE IS MY MIND?“ is the name of the concept behind the ARTRMX COLOGNE VOL.01. art festival. It will take place between the 22nd and 31st of August 2008 in Germany’s friendliest city. The organizers are planning to exhibit exceptional art works in unusual locations. The artists are asked to consider their perspective on today’s world, their thoughts on current issues and in brief, to ask themselves- “WHERE IS MY MIND?”

BATTERIERAUM Den Mann schickt uns der Himmel. Nee, das Ministerium des Klangs, besser bekannt unter dem englischen Namen Ministry Of Sound. Mit diesem Gütesiegel versehen erübrigt sich jede weitere Beschreibung dieses Jungbrunnens des Discosounds, der mit einem Commodore Amiga (sic!) den aktuell vielleicht leckersten Tanzpop im jungen 21. Jahrhundert fabriziert. Er möchte auf seinen Parties übrigens Frauen in gelben Pullis und pinkfarbenen baggy pants sehen.
Thank the Ministry Of Sound for picking this kid up (from Dumfries of all places!). He is the self-proclaimed fountain of youth for the ageing disco genre. He has decided that HE is the one and HE is gonna make you make shake your ass no matter what! But the best part ishe uses a Commodore Amiga to furnish the best dance-pop tunes of our day! By the way, Calvin tells us he wants all the ladies to show up in yellow hoodies and pink baggy jeans. So much for fashion trends....
PUPPETMASTAZ
Was zum Henker war das denn gerade, mag man sich denken, wenn man aus einem Konzert der internationalen Puppenspielerbande Puppetmastaz kommt. Nie war Schaumstoff, Pappmaschee und Bastelmasse mit so viel street credibility ausgestattet, nirgendwo hat man Kerlchen mit so dicken Hosen dermaßen überzeugend rappen gesehen. Die subversive HipHop-Version der Muppetshow – eine Formulierung, für die einen diese extrem partytauglichen Kreaturen wohl lynchen würden – hat ordentlich Funk und eine gute Portion Derbheit. Genau wie Hobnox.

Not since The Grouch & co from Sesame Street have any other puppets ever gained such street-credibility – until now! These raggedy, rowdy, randy puppets hail from the mean streets of Berlin. Their subversive Hip Hop puppet show is going to freak you out and rock your world! Don’t be scared, it’s only the Puppetmastaz!
Wer schon mal Zeuge eines DJ-Sets von Missill wurde, weiß, wie die perfekte Mischung aus HipHop, Dubstep und Electro heutzutage klingen kann. Auch wer einen DJ sucht, der wie ein Irrwisch um die Plattenteller wirbelt, ist bei dieser jungen Dame aus Frankreich richtig, die uns heute die Blasen aus dem Champagner rocken wird: Missill. So abgeschmackt es klingen mag, sie bringt die Luft zum flirren und schraubt mal locker das Hallendach ab – ohne Werkzeug.

LINE UP SICK GIRLS
Wie passend, die Sick Girls haben ihren ersten Auftritt als DJ-Team im Tresor auf den Betonboden gelegt. Jay-Oh und A.D. verstehen es als Clubgänger der ersten Stunde die tanzbaren Musikstile unserer an tanzbaren Musikstilen reichen Clubszene so kunstvoll aneinander zu reihen, dass der Partygänger sechs Stunden später völlig aufgelöst im Nieselregen vorm Club steht und seine Schuhe sucht. Neugierig?
Coincidence or not, the Sick Girls played their first DJ-set at the old Tresor in 2004. In the last four years, the Sick Girls have become a well-known party DJ-set in Berlin and have even been selected to represent the German DJ scene in Beijing. Speaking of which, Chop Suey would be a good word to describe their style- it’s a wild mix of Grime, Electro and Hip Hop that will leave you panting for air and screaming for more!
LINE UP TRESOR CLUB PANTHA DU PRINCE
Die verehrten Kollegen von der „Zeit“ beschreiben die Musik von Pantha du Prince wie folgt: „Das ist Techno der feinen hanseatischen Art, wie ihn das Label Dial hervorbringt. Nicht zum ekstatischen Tanzen, sondern zum berauschenden Hören erdacht.“ Schöner hätte ich es ohne Germanistikstudium auch nicht formulieren können. Jetzt soll aber keiner denken, es gäbe nichts zum Tanzen, wenn Pantha du Prince sein DJ-Set zum Besten gibt.
Our honorable colleagues from German newspaper “Die Zeit” have described the music of Pantha du Prince as “Techno that is true to the hanseatic style, as only the Dial label generates. It’s not made for ecstatic dancing, but for intoxicating listening.” We couldn't have phrased it better. Still, this shouldn’t make you think that there won’t be any dancing when Pantha du Prince rocks his DJ-set!
Tobias Thomas stand nicht nur jahrelang mit den Kollegen Michael Mayer und Superpitcher im Kölner Studio 672 an den Plattentellern, wenn es die berühmten „Total Confusion“- Parties gab. Tagsüber hat er unter anderem auch für das berüchtigte Musikmagazin Spex andere Köpfe der Clubkultur zum Interview gebeten. Als ob das seinen Status nicht genug zementieren würde, ist er zu allem Überfluss von Anfang an Teil des Kölner Labelinstitution Kompakt gewesen.

Tobias Thomas didn’t just spend his time spinning records with his colleagues Michael Mayer and Superpitcher at the legendary “Total Confusion” parties in Cologne’s Studio 672. During the daytime, he also wrote for the infamous music magazine Spex and interviewed leading heads from club culture. If that alone wasn’t status enough, he is also an important part of the legendary label Kompakt!
