Once monthly we will be hosting local and state government officials at the Knights of Columbus hall in Gladwin. The officials will give updates on their departments, new developments, and future ambitions. They are available for questions from those in attendance and there is a breakfast included in the price of admission. The events occur the second Friday of the month, January through May.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Gladwin

What we today know as Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Gladwin has undergone many changes over its near 1.5 centuries of existence. On October 5, 1881, Father James Byrne was appointed by the Archbishop of Detroit as the resident pastor for Midland, Gladwin, and parts of Gratiot counties. Mass was offered in homes every three months and lay people were appointed to give religious instruction until the priest returned.

In 1888, Gladwin became a mission of the parish in Pinconning, with Mass offered on the third Sunday of each month. Sufficient pledges were received in 1892 to build the original wooden Sacred Heart Church. Then, a donation by Judge John Shaffer in 1937 allowed for a new sanctuary and sacristy to be added.

In 1961 a larger brick church was constructed, but in the 1980s it underwent a modernization which removed much of the original interior’s distinctive artistry and character.

After many years of prayer, planning and discussion of needed improvements, the pastor and parishioners launched a capital campaign in 2018, naming it “God’s Work Through Our Hands.” In April 2021, the contract for interior renovations was approved, and Bishop Robert Gruss of the Diocese of Saginaw consecrated and reopened the church for worship that December 5th.

The renovations have dramatically enhanced the church’s interior functionally, liturgically, and aesthetically. Upon the reopening, an impressed visitor lovingly referred to Sacred Heart as “The Cathedral of Gladwin County.”
