Want to create distance on your golf swing? Improve clubface control Without being able to "catch the ball squarely" on the clubface, one has little chance of maximizing distance. A key to controlling the clubface and generating efficient power is found in rotating the lead forearm properly. Drill Extend the thumb on the hand of your lead arm and point it toward the top of your chest just below your Adam's apple. Next, drop your hand until it is waist high allowing your hand to rotate outward so your thumb is pointing down the target line. Extend your other arm to form a golfer's grip, bend at the waist and extend your hands down the target line as if you were just past impact. This is a simple demonstration of proper forearm rotation - nothing more, nothing less. Test To confirm you are rotating your forearm properly, put your watch on so that the face is visible from the underside of your wrist. Now, take a normal swing. When you complete your swing, you should be able to read the time on your watch. Confirmation The use of a ball flight monitor, or launch monitor, will confirm you are maximizing impact. By tracking clubhead speed, ball speed, launch angle and spin rates, the monitor will calculate a "smash factor" for each shot. A smash factor of 1.5 is considered the industry standard for solid impact or the maximization of a square face at impact with a proper swing path and controlled clubhead speed - all essential components required to generate the maximum distance possible. Other factors In addition to a square face at impact and proper forearm rotation, the combination of clubhead design, loft, shaft flex and kick-point, and golf ball play a substantial role in the delivery of distance. Better instruction facilities and golf shops that employ launch monitors as part of their teaching and equipment evaluation process can help match your swing style, clubhead speed and path, and impact tendencies with the ideal equipment combination that will add yards (and consistency) to your shots.

Want to save strokes with your short game? Keep your left wrist flat The majority of golf strokes occur near or on the putting green, but you see players who have no concept of how to hit a basic short shot in golf, whether it's a putt or a chip. If you want to save shots and lower your score, here are some tips. First, understand that a solid putting swing and a chipping swing are pretty much the same. So why is it that players often fear these short golf shots? The answer is that the cause of the issue is the breakdown (or collapse) of the left wrist in the hitting area. The bottom of the golf swing is the "impact zone." When the left wrist bends or flips during the swing, the club head travels in an upward direction when it should move down and forward through the swing. There should be absolutely no change in your wrist position. The left wrist is flat. There is a noticiably flat left wrist at impact and into the followthrough. This is a very important swing dynamic to work on. Some even refer to a flat wrist as a "secret." If you have a bent wrist action, consider changing to a flat left wrist type stroke. Start with your putter and position your left wrist on the golf grip so that your flat left wrist matches the flat club face. Chjeck this by holding the club perpendicular to the green and visually check the Page 12

putter face alignment to their flat left wrist. If your grip in straight the two should line up. Now, you are ready to roll a few putts. When putting, focus on your shoulders moving the arms and the flat wrist. The shaft and the left arm should form a straight vertical line. Check this in front of a mirror or stand next to a wall and press your arm and club up against the wall. With this alignment you will feel a solid impact with the ball. Make sure the left wrist is flat. Next, try it with a short iron. The chip swing is the same as a putt, but the set-up is different. It is recommended to play the ball back in your stance, lean the shaft left so your hands are opposite your left leg, aim your feet left of the target (10-30 degrees), open your stance and keep your weight on the left foot. Now, make a putting type swing with the flat left wrist. Notice that the club head stays low after impact and the left wrist is still flat. The divot or contact point with the turf is in front of the golf ball. The flat wrist ensures that you'll make solid contact with the ball. Keep the shoulders, arms and club moving at the same pace. The flat wrist keeps this in line. This will help you control the distance and direction of your short shots. This flat wrist is very important for golfers at any level. Pro golfers know this secret and practice it all the time. Next time you watch golf on TV, look for the flat wrist. Next time you see your local PGA Professional, ask him or her to help you develop this skill and show you some drills to practice. If you work on keeping the flat wrist through this impact zone, you will see great results.

Take a Swing at Golfing with the Kids Just in time to enjoy some fall rounds, your love of the green has extended to your children and they can’t wait to join you. Getting your children involved in golf can be a memorable, lifetime experience for both of you to share. Here are a few tips for getting your little ones involved at the course so you can be sure to have a great time together:
Kids Play FREE!
1. If your goal is to enjoy the day on the green with your kids, find a course that is kid-friendly, not just a course that allows for children to play. Be sure the staff is kind and the other players are patient and understanding of those who are just learning. 2. Ask about tee and cart fees for kids. Some golf courses charge different rates for children players, so be sure you pick a course that offers a fair price for kids who are just getting the feel for the game. 3. If the little ones are still new to the game, you may want to be sure that the course offers children’s Pro Shop rentals so you aren’t spending extra money on new equipment if the kids decide their interests have changed after a few months. 4. But, if the kids DO take to the game, you might want to choose a course that offers lessons so the kids will be familiar with the course staff. 5. Finally, look for a course that offers a driving range and putting green. That way, you can have some special time together while practicing as well. No matter whether your kids are new to the game or have been playing for a while, choosing the right course can be the difference between nourishing your child’s lifelong enjoyment and fond memories, or ending their interest with a short-lived, afternoon fling.
Buck Hills Golf Club 357 Golf Drive Buck Hills, PA 18323 Consider looking into Buck Hill Golf Course. The Club offers a great deal on golfing with children: kids never pay cart fees or playing fees, which means you can bring them anytime for free! And when you are finished, you can stop over to the Fairway Grille for a full menu that also features kid-friendly foods!

The 6 Rs of Mental Game Success Most of us are familiar with the old expression: “Golf is 90 percent mental, and the other 10 percent is in your head.” How true. While ingraining the fundamentals, learning the proper techniques and dedicating yourself to plenty of practice is vital to lowering scores, so is building a reliable mental approach to every swing and every round, especially under the pressure of competition. Follow the Six Rs of Mental Game Success— these are competitive skills learned and developed, just like a fundamentally sound grip and setup. Review this list in preparation for competition and take a post-round inventory of how well you performed your Six Rs. Soon your Competitive IQ will be resilient! 1. Relax Focus on deep rhythmic breathing and calming down your heart rate. An attitude of gratitude, and a quiet mind thinking in the present, is the key to calming yourself under pressure. 2. Rhythm Through the bag, from driver to putter, the glue that keeps a swing together is rhythm. It should be a constant thought and feeling of focus, especially when feeling the heat of the moment. 3. Read Assess the situation and trust your intu-ition. Let’s break that word down to better understand this powerful tool that we often neglect to use during competition. “In-tuition”: Taking the first part, “in,” short for our inner voice that we often choose to ignore, especially when dealing with a difficult situation, and, the second part, being “tuition,” which is the price paid Page 20
Find more Golf savings at WWW.LVPGOLFI NG.COM lvpgolfing.com
for skills and knowledge. Your history of being in similar situations and how you handled it, successfully or not, is the price that you have paid. Sometimes our decisions create huge loss and heartache. But as long as we can grow from it, then the tuition paid is well worth it. When we learn to listen to our inner voice is when decisions under pressure will become easier for us to choose the correct way and mitigate damage. 4. Routine Every great player, past and present, became great from being habitual. Often referred to as the process, it should begin with seeing what you want the outcome to be. Once we have a picture of what we want, we can begin rehearsing the feelings of our shot choice in a rhythmic way. It is now time to walk into the ball because you are on purpose. 5. Ready Take action without delay, with focus on the target and shot intention. Many players over-think while over the ball, causing fear, uncertainty and doubt to take over and — a mis-hit. When you are ready to go, do it without delay and with intention. 6. React How we react immediately after a shot is often more important than the outcome of the shot itself. If the shot was good, we need to celebrate, because what we give energy will grow. If we didn’t pull the shot off, it’s even more important to replace what just happened with a vision and feeling of what you wanted to happen. You will see the best players in the world making a few practice swings to get the feel back before they move onward. The worst thing we can do is drag it down the fairway with us and into the very next shot. It is inevitable that in tournament golf we are going to make mistakes. How fast we bounce back by focusing confidently and intently on what we want is how to finish on top.

SHORT GAME TIP Eliminate the skull shot when chipping - FOREVER As we all watch golfers try and master the game of golf, we’re amazed how many of them waste eight to ten shots a round by being poor chippers of the ball around the green. Regardless of how good a player you are, you'll eventually find yourself faced with a little chip shot where you will skull the ball over the green. First, start by choosing the proper club for the shot at hand. This decision is based on the type of lie you have, your distance from the hole and if there are any obstacles between your ball and the hole. If you are 20 feet or longer away from the hole and chipping to a flat green, it's best to use a lower lofted club, such a 7, 8, 9 or pitching wedge. For the most consistent results, use your putting grip and stroke for this shot. Feel as though you are just putting the ball, as this will allow the loft on the club face to bump the ball onto the green and rollout to the hole. Most important, don't try to get the ball into the air, let the loft of the club face do it for you. Just use your putting stroke and it will happen! If you are closer to the hole than 20 feet or you need to chip the ball over rough, sand or a hill on the green, you need to use one of your wedges - gap, sand or lob. This shot requires a different technique and a little more practice to perfect. Start by having an upright posture, position the ball in the middle of your stance and place the majority of your weight on your front foot. Next, open your stance and push your hands slightly ahead of the ball. These set-up positions place you in position to use a more up-and-down swing, rather than the sweeping motion used in the first tip. From this set-up position, simply lift your back shoulder up toward the sky, and let the hands bring the club up with the shoulder (keep your lower body still). On the down swing, just let the back shoulder drop down toward the ball, and let the club head follow through. If executed properly, the ball should just "pop" into the air. As you practice this up-and-down motion, you will quickly learn how far back to take the club to hit these shots different distances. The most important thing to remember on this shot is to just let your back shoulder go up and down, don't try to lift the ball into the air (that's what causes a skull). Finally, if you need extra loft (height) on a shot around the green, use tip No. 2, and simply set your wrist as you take the club away from the ball. This will give you more hand action during the downswing causing the ball to "pop" higher into the air upon impact. If you use these techniques, practice and, most of all, "always" let the loft of the club face get the ball into the air, you will eliminate the skull shot from your game forever.

Your best 'playing in cold weather' golf tips
Unfortunately for many of us around the country, golf season is coming to a sad, sad end. In parts of the Northeast, for instance, it's as if we skipped the fall season and went straight to winter with lows already in the 20s. Sure, it all comes with the territory, but that doesn't mean those of us in areas of the country where the winters are frighteningly cold aren't still golf junkies dying for the spring to arrive. Some of us -- maybe you? -- are more hardcore than others. You don't let a little frigid weather or maybe even snow get in the way of your golf. So here are your best tips for bearing the cold weather. 9. Move someplace warm. OK, not exactly the "tip" we were looking for, but heck, then you can send your friends who are still freezing their kanoogies off constant reminders that it’s 70 degrees and sunny out. 8. Enjoy an adult beverage. Be responsible, of course. Personally, we like springing for the hot chocolate instead. The cup can also serve as a hand warmer. 7. Wear an extra pair of socks. Along with golf, this bit of advice can also apply to many cold weather sports. For the money, there's nothing worse than cold feet and cold ears. 6. Have a realistic goal and stick to it. When the temperatures dip -- no matter how many trips you make to the range, or how much time you spend on a practice green -- you're not likely to be setting any personal records on the course. As long as you accept this beforehand, the round will be far more enjoyable. Whether it is 34 degrees outside or 78, be grateful that our lives, good fortune and our health permit us to play the greatest game on earth. 5. Use a softer golf ball. You may not hit the ball as far with a softer-covered golf ball, but you'll at least have a little more feel. Feel, by the way, is something you're never going to have much of playing in colder weather. 4. Club up in the cold because the ball won't travel as far. Your muscles are going to be tight. You're certainly not as loose as you are in warm, humid conditions. Your golf ball is experiencing the same characteristics. Take an extra club. If you hit 8-iron from 145 yards, hit a 7-iron instead. Also hit punch shots through the wind if need be. Bring your umbrella and waterproof gear out to the links just to be safe. And if it's just cold and windy then you should bring your wind breakers. Sometimes when it's wet and soggy you should wear high top waterproof golf shoes. 3. Wear layers. This should probably go without saying, but we'll throw it out there anyway. Pretty elementary, right? You can always peel layers off, but you can't add them if you don't have them with you. Keeping things breathable and dry is a chess match against the elements. 2. Carry hand warmers. This will certainly help your feel. And, they're cheap! Stuff them in your pockets and keep your hands in your pockets between shots. Hand warmers in your pocket with a ball in your pocket. Keeps ball warm. Also where gloves if driving cart. But just so you know, using a hand-warmer to warm your golf ball is a breach of the Rules of Golf. Decision 14-3/13.5 just in case you are playing in a Fall Tournament. You can, however, use the warmers for your hands according to decision 14-3/13. 1. Don't take a cart - Walk instead. We realize this may not be a possibility for all of you and that's OK. But, if you are able to walk the course, you will also keep warmer. You're blood will be flowing, you're less likely to stiffen up. WALK, WALK, WALK and get the blood flowing!

Fernwood Golf Course Hosts Northampton Community Foundation Benefit Golf Tournament
Each year, the Fernwood Golf Course hosts a charity golf event and selects a different organization to benefit. Past years have included Big Brothers Big Sisters, Salvation Army, and Special Olympics and have raised approximately $20,000 - $30,000 per event. This year’s beneficiary is the Northampton Community College Foundation. Celebrating 50 years of providing accessible and affordable education to Northampton and Monroe county, PA residents, NCC serves more than 35,000 students a year in credit and non-credit programs and grants degrees, certificates and diplomas in over 100 fields, on three campuses and online. One in six graduates of Monroe County’s public schools will start their college education at NCC’s Monroe Campus. This state-of-theart campus integrates with the surrounding community, offering greater convenience to higher education. It provides an educational, energy-efficient landmark and degree programs reflect market demand and provide training necessary for local economic growth. The Foundation seeks to foster relationships in the community to raise, invest and manage private resources for the benefit of NCC and their students. It is the largest private scholarship program at any community college in the Commonwealth and their endowment is among the top 10 community college endowments in the country. Almost $600,000 in scholarships to over 480 students was awarded during the 2016-2017 academic year. At NCC, the culture reflects their belief that higher education should be within the reach of all who can benefit from it.
