As a team they were required to design and build a flashing beacon which had to have the features:
• A light connected to an electrical circuit which has a device to turn the light in and off to make the light flash.
• A flashing light positioned on the beacon's highest point
• An advertising beacon to be mounted on the beacon Each team then had to present their final model in front of the judges and participants The test involved starting the beacon and having no further contact The beacon was required to flash 10 times in 10 seconds

Exhibition Day - Cricket
Exhibition Day 1st XI vs Staff Invitational XI
With the return of Exhibition Day, the inaugural, “Old Hall Hundred” was the place to be on a fine Saturday afternoon. Captains Oliver W and Mr Kelly took to the pitch for the all important toss and the pupils decided to bat first. Opening the batting was future Deputy Head Boy Barnaby O and Harry S. Harry S and Barnaby O got the pupils off to a slow start after some questionable walkout music from the former (I’m a Barbie Girl) putting on 15 before Barnaby was stumped from the bowling of Mr West. Peter Ba was the next batsman in the middle looking to stabilise a wobbling top order.
After a miscommunication for coming back for a second run, a fizzed ball in from the boundary took Barnes for 5. Harry S went onto score a fast 31 including several boundaries before holing out behind from the bowling of Mr Smerdon. With Josh J the next batsman in, the natural choice for the bowling change was to call for Mr Jones Snr. The first chance wasn’t a long wait after a drilled ball to short extra cover was put down, Josh J set about a reset of the batting line up. Making a quick fire 10 before being stumped by Mr Arif dubbed the “Hertfordshire Afridi”, the wily slow right armer finished with figures of 2 7.
It was at this point the ball was thrown to Miss Field, very much starting out in her cricket career but with a wicket to her name she will definitely be getting the call up next year And so entered the main event, Joe B and the return of Wallace and Gromit was very much a crowd pleaser, waving his bat to the fans before he’d faced a ball Joe scored a couple of very streaky boundaries before being caught by Miss Moyler off the bowling of Mr Smerdon, himself finishing with statistics of 2 8 Captain Oliver W failed to make an impact with the bat, falling to the inform Mr Arif which left Essex cricketer Jed C as the last recognised batsman in the side So much of cricket comes down to small battles and we had the battle of Kent vs Essex with Jed having his middle stump knocked out by Kent cricketer Miss Moyler The students closed their account on 115 10, amazingly going down to the last ball
Captain Kelly set out a strong top order for the staff to chase down the student’s total With Mr Berkley and Mr Smerdon starting strong both batsmen retired on 30+ scores to set the staff up for a grand finish Late draft into the side Rory Chick holed out to Jones Jnr for 7 runs with Jones Snr dubbed “The Big Show” set for a grand finish Jones Snr set about dismantling the bowling attack with a quick fire 28 before being bowled by Captain Oliver W The Staff Invitational XI won the match, again amazingly on the last ball (who would have thought!) The score, however, was inconsequential The event had a great atmosphere and was by far and away the most popular event of Exhibition Day with parents, staff, guests and the entire cast of Crufts watching from the boundary rope
These events do not run without the staff and students on the pitch and my heartfelt thanks to them all, but there are thanks to the unseen heroes of the day Rudiments pupil Chris V (DJ Toff) with the music made the event the resounding success it was, we will definitely get you booked in for next year! Dan and his wonderful grounds team for the track and outfield The lovely ladies in marketing for their work on the match programme, we could not do it without you The PE team who worked tirelessly on social media, organisation and everything in between And who can forget our Master of Ceremonies, Mr Hounsell, what you don’t know is that he actually volunteered about 10 minutes before the start time and delivered with his usual humour and good nature
As a final word, as I was having a conversation with a member of one of the teams and this summarises the afternoon very nicely for me personally, “you have got me to enjoy Cricket and that is an achievement ” ODP

"For the second time this year, students at St Edmund's College had the privilege of meeting a member of the House of Lords via Teams. In addition to the Rhetoric 1 A Level Politics students, we were joined on this occasion by members of the Politics Society from Elements and Grammar.
Mrs Barkham and the group met in the Griffiths Room and each student had a question for Baroness Newlove There was a range of excellent questions in which Baroness Newlove provided clear and informative answers. The students all expressed how much they enjoyed the experience, staying it opened their eyes to the workings of the House of Lords. They particularly enjoyed Baroness Newlove's honesty and good sense of humour
Baroness Newlove commended the students for their engagement and the rigour of their questions Mrs Barkham was also impressed at how well the younger and older students interacted with each other.

St Edmund's Summer Gin
St Edmund’s College Summer Dry Gin The botanicals in St Edmund’s Summer Dry Gin, foraged from the school’s Old Hall Seminary Garden, resonate with the story of the school’s rich history. The beautifully scented Iris Germanica, the French ‘fleur de lys’, grow here and in abundance around Douai, whence the school was founded to avoid religious persecution in England
Foraged horseradish, orris root, elderflower and other fruits and flowers, make a truly satisfying dry gin which captures the essence of the Edmundian Spirit. It is a gorgeous with a premium light tonic, heaps of ice, a pink grapefruit wheel and a sprig of fresh rosemary…. The Friends of St. Edmund’s receive a contribution from every bottle sold.
