Located in 400 acres of beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, St Edmund’s College and Prep School is a safe, stimulating environment for students aged 2–18, with boarding from 11.
At St Edmund’s, the spiritual, academic, pastoral and co-curricular are of equal value. These four elements combine to create an education that’s second to none. The true measure of our success is found in the qualities of the young people we send out into the world: excellent but never arrogant; ambitious but never selfish; robust but never uncaring; and faith-filled but never intolerant.
Our co-curricular programme is a unique aspect of life at St Edmund’s, offering students an exceptional opportunity to explore their passions and develop new skills. From sports and performing arts to STEM and creative pursuits, this dedicated time at the end of the academic day ensures a well-rounded experience that nurtures talents, fosters teamwork, and builds confidence.
Sport is an important part of the curriculum at St Edmund’s where talent and endeavour are recognised and nurtured. A wide range of opportunities are given to students in the formative stages of their sports education, from learning on the sports field to competing in fixtures against other schools.
Our sports teams regularly compete at county level and have also experienced competitions at regional and national levels too.
In PE and Games lessons, pupils learn about a range of different types of sports. These include football, netball, rugby, hockey, basketball, pickleball, pop lacrosse, tennis and athletics.
St Edmund’s Prep and College are able to offer a range of excellent sporting facilities. As well as two large sports fields, these include a 3G astro turf, swimming pool, netball courts, a gymnasium, a dance studio, health suite and weights room.
St Edmund’s Prep offers a varied and extensive fixture programme. Teams are chosen on merit and talented athletes are regularly given opportunities to play ‘up an agegroup’ where appropriate to assist with their own development.
Squad practices are held each Monday after school for the under 11 teams These give extra opportunities to train together and work on individual skill and tactical development as a team.
Whilst we aim to encourage all children to be involved in team sports at St Edmund’s Prep, we also strive to be as competitive as we can with our A-Teams. Our U11A Football team were crowned ESFA Hertfordshire champions in 2024
We will be looking to award sports scholarships to individuals who demonstrate:
A willingness to learn and work as a team
A commitment to sport by playing either football, netball, hockey or rugby for a club team
Good athletic ability / potential
Good effort and behaviour in all areas of school life

From the moment I joined St Edmund’s Prep it was evident how many opportunities were available to me as an aspiring sportsman. My previous school, the local primary school where I lived, had one tournament a year whereas at St Edmund’s I could represent my school weekly in a whole range of sports (some of these included sports I had never tried before) Due to my teacher’s coaching, support and enthusiasm, I soon started to participate in football matches. A sport I had always held a keen interest in but not had the time or chance to develop outside the occasional game with my friends After attending weekly squad training and having been selected for various teams, I was in a position to trial for some local football sides From this experience, I went on to represent Hertfordshire County
When I reflect on this achievement, I always think that this pathway would not have been open to me if I had not attended St Edmund’s Prep and been lucky enough to have my natural skills nurtured and developed by the teachers My skills developed across a range of sports, enabling me to also represent the Essex County cricket team as one of the opening bowlers as well as playing hockey at a similar level. I always enjoyed being able to participate in exciting team building activities which helped me to develop leadership skills which I know will be with me for life. The dedication of the teachers to ensure I fulfilled my potential, crossed over into the academic part of my life and as my confidence in sport built so did it in all areas of the curriculum. I am sure this is why I am now studying at Durham University playing football and cricket whilst also pursuing my academic studies From my experiences at St Edmund’s Prep I have developed the skill set to enable me to chase my dream to become a lawyer whilst still playing sport at a competitive level
I have always been highly impressed with the sports offering that is created at St Edmund’s Prep. The commitment to all children in their community, encouraging them to join clubs and get involved rather than just focusing on a set few that excel has meant that St Edmund’s Prep has a phenomenal reputation across other schools
Speaking to families who have recently joined, I know that sport has been a huge factor because they know their children will get greater opportunities to just play in teams at St Edmund’s Prep. Sport is such a big attraction for parents when discussing which school to choose for younger years.
My child has loved being in the sports team. I have watched her development from the early stages and the encouragement and coaching from staff have totally changed her confidence across several areas of school life. Through playing sport at school I can see that she is at her happiest and I really think that is down to the opportunities she has been given at St Edmund’s Prep.
