NURSES CAN BE BUSINESS OWNERS TOO | RN & PERSONAL CARE BUSINESS CONSULTANT ERNEST G. FLAGG SAYS NURSE NEED TO STOP BEING COMFORTABLE WITH SECOND PLACE AND BE BOLD IN THIS 21ST CENTURY There are an estimated 3.1 million nurses in the U.S. (U.S. Bureau of Labor, 2014) and approximately 220,000 nurse practitioners (AANP, 2016). Yet there are very few nurse entrepreneurs. However, as a Nurse and Personal Care Business Consultant – I can understand why so many nurses have been reluctant to move towards business ownership. In short, some reasons are that most nurses have been programmed to support as opposed to lead a business, to work for others and to assume a back seat in life as taught by many colleges and society as a whole. However, there is an interesting trend that I'm observing, and the writing is on the wall about how it will turn out. Hospitals will definitely experience an even greater shortage of nurses in coming years as many nurses are just getting sick and tired of being sick and tired. Nurses are coming to the realization that while their focus is on patient care – these hospitals, CEO’s and Administrator’s focus is on how they can get more out of these nurse and other healthcare workers for less. I'm seeing more and more nurses opening their own autonomous business. Many of these offices set out to offer care that is personalized, covered under insurance and falling under the Medicaid Waiver program. Some are strictly cash and carry opting out of the insurance game completely. Nurses such as Nurse Practitioners are not only establishing businesses under Waivers (Federally Funded Programs) but they are even electing to open their own NP specialty/sub-specialty practices such as house calls, insurance assessments and women's health. One NP client we recently worked with invented 10 new services for her newly started company and that alone brought in an additional 50K in revenue her first year. NBHS of Georgia is one of the world’s leading management consulting firms. We work with everyday people to help them plan differently, create residual income and realize business ownership. With more than 20 years of industry experience – we have empowered hundreds and even thousands to turn in keys and badges, surrender medication carts, gain new titles like owner and CEO, and to employ a lifestyle they never envisioned. This is during a time when more physician practices are joining together in these conglomerations that aren't necessarily tied to hospitals. You'd be hard pressed to find a solo primary care physician these days, yet nurses are putting up business all over the world and we are helping them to make that happen. What to make of this? Your time is now. Just think about it but, if that company can pay you what they pay – what are you really making them? For me it was millions; however, long gone are the days when we can just sit and wait on opportunity to come our way…we must go out and create opportunity for ourselves. What nurses should do is to listen to the many people and patients that have said to them you should start your own business. They obviously saw something in you or stop ignoring that inner voice of yours that’s telling you to take the leap – it’s your life and your year. Personal care business development is what we do and do very well. We take your ideas as a nurse, expand on them, introduce you to new possibilities, develop a plan of action and then methodically execute that plan. Our services models include: Nursing Home, DD & ID Group Homes, Children Residential Home, Assisted Living Home, Veteran Home, Senior Home, Adult Day Program, Supported Employment Program, Memory Care Home, Staffing Agency, Health Product Store, Transportation Company, Companion Care Agencies and Private Home Care Agency. “I have been a nurse for so many years and NBHS of Georgia helped me license my medically fragile home in Michigan and are currently assisting me with project licensure in Virginia and Mississippi. They have helped numerous associates of mine and I have the upmost confidence in their capacity. I have personally experienced their work in many states.” LaToshia L.
