BIANCHI Wo r k e x p e r i e n c e February 2021 - Today I am currently working as a industrial designer in the R&D deparment of Bianchi Bicycles, in the headquarters in Treviglio, Italy.

05

THE EXPERIENCE I am currently working as a industrial designer in the R&D deparment of Bianchi Bicycles. Bianchi is the oldest bicycle brand in the world that is still active since 1885. Here I follow the design of both muscle and electric bicycles. The main activities I carry out are: - Design and engineering in usually 5-6 sizes of carbon and aluminum bicycle frames (benchmarking, design of geometries, study of ergonomics, sketching, 3D surface modeling, engineering) - design of custom bicycle parts (handlebar, seat tube, seat clamp, plastic and rubber parts) - Study and engineering of compatibility with parts of external suppliers (from small parts, to gearboxes, motors and batteries, etc.) - 3D printing of prototypes - Contact with external national and international suppliers for the production of the parts - Start-up of production and equipment design (which takes place in Treviglio)

PENTA Wo r k e x p e r i e n c e September 2019 - Genuary 2021 I worked as a industrial designer in the R&D deparment of Penta, in the headquarters in Meda, Italy.

13

THE EXPERIENCE At Penta Light, I worked as a product designer and developer in the R&D department. Penta Light is part of and head of Penta Group, a brand that aims to provide lighting solutions in all its aspects; decorative with Penta, architectural with Castaldi, and also reinterpreting the past in a modern key, with the great designers of the past with Arredoluce. At Penta I dealt with the development of the products in all its phases, which briefly are: - Development of the concept proposed in collaboration with external designers - Design and engineering of the product in all its parts (3d modeling and creation of technical drawings, 3D printing of prototypes) - Contact with external suppliers for the production of the parts - Start-up of production (which takes place in Meda) - Preparation of bill of materials, cost reports and instruction manuals

15

08

LEGO Group Internship February 2019 - June 2019 I worked as a product design intern at LEGO headquarters in Billund, Denmark. This experience has marked and enriched me both from the personal and the professional point of view.

17

THE EXPERIENCE At the LEGO Group, I worked as a product designer in the LEGO DUPLO department. Describing my work, I will refer to sets and elements (see example on the right page); the "sets" are the various thematic boxes that are sold in the stores; the "elements" are the individual pieces that compose the set (which can be bricks, animals, figures, vehicles, accessories, etc). During this period of work I have dealt with: - Participation in many phases of the design process concerning new products (concept, design, 3D modeling, user testing) - Design and 3D modeling of new elements - Design and creation of new sets - Collaboration in digital projects of the brand (app, television and online advertising)

... 19

...

SET: 10914 As a set for example I followed the creation of 10914, the largest creative box in the duplo range. I followed the pieces contained in it, the colors, the possible constructions, the child interaction.

ELEMENT: PUPPY PENGUIN I developed a new element, a puppy penguin, following the duplo design rules and engineering it as real, for the new "Duplo World" app.

M'ama 2020

M'ama is my master thesis project; it is an IOT device designed to help parents in controlling the child and the environmental parameters, and is inspired by Russian matryoshkas.

21

,

WHERE DO BABIES SPEND THE MOST TIME?

The research started around this question. From the collected data it emerged that, both in early childhood for physiological reasons, and in 2nd-3rd childhood for reasons of habit, children spend most of their time at home.

SAME ENVIRONMENT, TOO MANY DEVICES Since the time spent by the children at home is a lot, has been created a large market on different devices to help parents to control and manage the child in the home. I researched the best-selling items to analyze both the items themselves and the opinions expressed by the parents who bought them.

WHY THE MATRYOSHKA? Looking for an identity for my object, I asked myself: what would a parent want to perceive from such an object? What feelings? Among the objects that stimulated my imagination in this sense there was the Matryoshka. Infact, it is an object whose meaning is inextricably linked with the female figure of the mother. It is a figure that symbolizes acceptance, safety and protection in the most beautiful of the possible nuances, the maternal one.

26

INTERACTION 1: PHYSICAL In order to use the object, it is necessary to open the tank as shown in the figure. Then the tank can be filled with normal water and then closed doing the opposite movement. Finally you will need to connect the power supply to a power outlet and to the USB-C input seen previously.

U-GO

for E-NOVIA 2018

U-GO is a small self-driving vehicle designed for luggage delivery, in collaboration with the E-Novia company.

31

,

THE PROBLEM OF FAST TRAVELS The world of fast travels is growing and the users of this world, who move for a few days, for work or pleasure, have a common problem: the lack of time. A lot of the time is lost for personal luggage; the day of arrival to bring it to the hotel, and the last day after the morning checkout, carrying it throughout the day.

U-GO LUGGAGE DELIVERER Taking advantage of the technology offered by E-Novia, U-GO is a small self-driving electric vehicle that wants to cover the "last mile" of the luggage route, freeing the traveler from the stress related to it upon arrival and departure. In fact, it is able to accommodate the baggage inside, and transport it to its destination: from the station of arrival to the hotel in the case of the first day, or by taking the reverse route in the case of departure, the last day. U-GO has a versatile habitability that allows it to carry up to two trolleys, and also has a support to carry a suit, all in complete safety thanks to the belts and the internal anti-slip mat to secure the luggage.

STORYBOARD OF USE: ARRIVAL The storyboard of the arrival, the first day of the travel.

1 By registering with the app, the user can book U-GO by choosing a timetable and a place (the arrival station).

2 The user arrives at the predetermined public transport station.

3 The user carries out the recognition through the app. U-GO recognizes the user thanks to cameras and unlocks the door, opening it. 35

4 The user inserts and fixes his baggage with the belts; then he closes the door.

5 U-GO goes to the choosen hotel, previously entered by the user in the app, during the booking.

6 The hotel staff picks up the luggage. The user receives an app notification of the delivery. 36

5 The luggage storage staff picks up the luggage from U-GO.

6 When the user reaches the station for the departure, he picks up his luggage from the luggage storage. 38

,

THE ARCHITECTURE On the right there is a simplified exploded view of the main elements. The technology (which allows U-GO to move independently in the city, recognize the user, etc.) is developed by E-Novia, and is blurred because it is confidential material.

WHY ROTOMOLDING? Rotomolding is the chosen technology for the main shell of U-GO. This method of production is the one that suit better to the characteristics of the part: big dimensions and presence of a big internal cavity (for the luggage), compatibility with the choosen material (HDPE: 1,5 €/Kg, 16,4 Kg tot.), limited batchsize (500 p/year, 3000 tot.), and because it is an economic process (it's possible do all the plastic covers needed with a single shell and mold). To evaluate the feasibility of the part, we have requested an evaluation by a company specialized in rotomolding, which gave us a positive result, also from the economic point of view.

RIBS Both for aesthetic and functional reasons (LEDs housing).

KISS-OFF Reinforce the structure without creating deformations on the outer surface.

INSERTS 10 metal inserts directly inserted during the molding process.

39

HINGES LOAD CELLS 4 load cells on the floor control the weight of the luggage.

Concealed hinges connect the door with the shell.

BELTS The belts allow to lock the luggage.

WHEELS The wheels with the hub-motor provide traction.

FRAME The frame consists of a metal structure for support and protect the technology. Material: Al 6063(T6)

BATTERIES 4 batteries under the floor allow a range of 80 km.

LOWER SHELL The lower shell, created with thermoforming, protects the mechanics. Material: ABS regenerated

SUSPENSIONS The suspensions allows to absorb the road roughness.

ALPHA

for BEKO 2018

Alpha is the bread machine born from a redesign project of an existing model of the brand Beko. The special inclined architecture and the shape of the rotating basket make it an innovative machine.

41

,

REDESIGN OF A BREAD MACHINE The starting home appliance was a bread machine of the brand Beko, to which was made a redesign operation, both aesthetic and functional.

INCLINATION AS A SOLUTION Since the goal was to make the machine stand-alone throughout the process, we have eliminated the major problem encountered during use, ie the manual extraction (in the middle of the process) of the rotating scoop responsible for mixing the dough. Deciding to completely eliminate the scoop, an autonomous machine was born thanks to the 45 ° inclined architecture in which the basket, rotating itself and thanks to a special shape, manages to mix the dough. New materials such as the double glass of the porthole ensure lower energy consumption. A fan and a humidity sensor eliminate the dependence of external conditions on the result.

RC Car Shell f o r KYO S H O 2018

In this project I worked on modeling in 3D the shell of an RC car (1/8 scale) for the Kyosho brand, starting from an existing 4WD mechanic.

49

,

THE BRIEF The brief for this project was the creation of a new shell for the INFERNO model (1/8 scale) of the RC cars manufacturer Kyosho, starting from an existing 4WD mechanic.

WHY THE MINI? Being able to use the car in the rally category, thanks to the 4WD mechanics, the chosen car model had to have a relationship with this world. For this reason and for the dimensions of the provided frame, I chose the Mini BMW; indeed, the original 1959 Mini was a successful rally car, thanks to the low weight and the handling. I wanted to pay homage to this historic car by taking the current Mini and modifying it.

51

52

PARTS AND TECHNOLOGIES

After making the assembly of the mechanical, the 3D modeled parts were: • The shell, produced by thermoforming, which is the most used method to produce this part; therefore the shell is without undercuts and sharp corners. • The wheels, produced by injection molding, with a narrow-spoke design. • The connections between the shell and the mechanical, to accommodate and fix the new shell. 53

PA R C H E G G I A M I 2017

ParcheggiaMI is a park-sharing service for all kinds of bicycles, in which is possible reserve and pay a secure parking space for a bike through the app. The structure is made of welded steel profiles, designed to be strong but also easy to make.

55

, WHY

The main problem for cyclists in the city of Milan are thefts. In alternative solutions such as bike sharing, however, it is not possible to use a personal bicycle, but those offered in these services are unconfortable and heavy. In ParcheggiaMI instead, what is shared (and therefore payed) is the parking, allowing you to use your own bike.

HOW IT WORKS The structure preserves the speed of use of a normal rack. The mobile part of the structure is what makes it suitable for all types of bicycles; once the rotation and translation movements have been done, and blocking it using the app, it binds the bike to the ground, preventing theft of vital parts (rims, saddles, chassis) which, to be disassembled, would require space of movement of the bike upwords.

58

, THE APP

Through the service app you can see the available spots, book and pay, as well as manage blocking and unlocking the personal spot through the interaction with a totem present in each station, using a QR code.

MECHANISM The universality of the structure is given by the absence of preestablished positions of locking of the mechanism. Is exploited the continuous movement of the actuator, that lock the moving part by the joint of the bevel gears.

CONFIGURATIONS The singular spots are independent, making the station modular: here are shown two possible configurations, circular and linear.

60

PROTOTYPE AND TESTING To test the functionality of the object in the reality, a 1:1 scale prototype of a station was built, and numerous tests were made with different models of bicycles. It was possible to prove that the measurements of the object were correct for all the bicycle models studied, from the smallest 20" to the largest 28".

SHIELD

for BULLOCK 2017

Shield is a bicycle lock developed for the company Tavola Spa, for their brand of personal anti-theft devices for personal vehicle, Bullock.

63

,

BULLOCK FAMILY FEELING As the slogan "the anti-theft with safety balls" says, one of the key points of the brief was that the new Bullock has to respects the family feeling of the company, characterized by the red balls (which must have a function) but also by colors, materials, and using their locking system.

HOW IT WORKS Bullock Shield is a lock designed to be mounted simply on your bike, giving the ability to comfortably carry a lock of effective size. The heart of the product is made of metal, while the two plastic bodies protect the cable, which is rolled inside.

SETTE 2015

Sette is a modular outdoor game dedicated to the relationship between nephews and grandparents; only through the collaboration of both the game can be completed.

69

,

COLLABORATION The aim of Sette is to involve both the child and the elderly in a fun way, with two effects: on the one hand to entertain the child and on the other hand to make the elderly do an activity with his nephew, making light movements. Obviously mothers and fathers can play with it too!

THE GAME The game consists in advancing a ball, which must pass through all the modules to complete the course. Each module has external controls (such as cranks and knobs) that, if are simultaneously operated by the adult and child, allow the ball to move forward.

MODULARITY Each module is different, but the height of entry and exit of the ball is always the same, making the structure modular according to space that is available.

ADULT SIDE

CHILD SIDE

72

,

MATERIALS The materials chosen for Sette make it suitable to be placed outside and resist both the weather and the vandalism. The modules are designed to be easily assembled and maintained but, at the same time, inaccessible from the outside by external objects.

SEVEN EXERCISES The activities that are carried out at each module are pretexts to make both entertaining and doing a light physical activity to the elderly. In fact, each of them stimulates a certain area of the body according to the dictates of gymnastics for elderly people.

TANGRAM 2014

Tangram is a stool in multi-layer poplar wood, assembled without tools, that contains a surprise: a wooden puzzle game.

75

,

NO TOOL NEEDED

Tangram is a stool that it can be assembled without using any tools; in fact, the joints between the two legs and the seat form the structure. To hold the assembly safely, there is a knob with a bolt under the seat which is screwed in the threaded insert of the lid.

SIT OR PLAY Tangram, however, is not just a stool and in fact contains a surprise. Unscrewing the knob you can remove the lid of the seat, revealing a wooden puzzle game. It is also possible to completely remove the seat and then place the playing surface wherever you want. To rebuild the structure, you have only to replace the seat on the legs with the lid and tighten the knob.

P.S .

!

This portfolio contains a summary of the projects I have carried out during these years. Being an exhibition summary, not all the design phases are explained, in favor of the overall understanding of the project. In these short final lines, therefore, I wanted to highlight how important is for me the "backstory" of a project, namely the design method that makes possible to achieve the final result.

From the analysis phase, to be able to define the design requirements, the benchmarking, the concept phase, up to the 3D model, the technical drawings, the prototyping phase and the final tests.

Each project is different and the sequence of the phases can vary, but each of them are important to be able to better center the target; the more you build the foundations of a project well, the more you can aim for a better result.
