The Heart of the House Antonella Gallo Design Workshop 1 1° academic year
In this workshop i did an analysis and then a reinterpretation of devices (spacial and structural devices) which govern the relationships between different moments and places of living in eight “cases study”. This project is the result of numerous studies of the spacial and structural core of Summer Cottage, a project by Frank Lloyd Wright, using it like a basis from which a design experience can be developed and actualized.

The project has been conceived with a wooden modular structure (balloon frame), which is typical of NorthAmerican architecture of 19째 centur y. On the ground floor, there are two main cores of the house : a big fireplace that divides the living room from the kitchen, and the stair well with thin walls studied to create further spaces, more precisely a bathroom and a pantr y.
08
On the first floor there are two bedrooms, a bathroom and a big study/librar y. the second external level can be reached through a spiral staircase: a spacious balanced open area is divided by simple geometric solids like cilindric stair well, the big fireplace with a fitted wall and an arbor.

The architecture is disposed along the east side of the island to benifice of the view on Venice. Under the long gallery there are many services for students: lots of classrooms to study, supermarkets, bars, newsstands and restaurants. In addition to this, there are three vaporetto stops and on the final part a green spacious area to meet and communicate.

NEW ENERGY
ENERGY PRODUCTION
SAVE MONEY
Our project concept starts from the maintenance and the reuse of existing industrial structures (converting them for the production of biogas) and from the building of new structures, capable of self-sustainig through creation and use of alternative energy; that area will become a research center, specialized in studying and producing green energy. We imagine an innovative idea: create a flexible Urban net which fits for different usages (accommodations, residences, laboratories and services). In this way we created a mix of elements that combine vertical punctual structures with horizontal factory shapes which succeed in connecting different buildings.

Figure 02 Typical Floor Of services
Offices
Vertical structures are divided into two parts: accommodations for students and professors and offices at the lower floors, hotel rooms on the higher floors. Horizontal structures define a spacial unit that can be repeated and can hold activities like services, laboratories, common areas, streets and spaces for a future settlement. The settlement strategy used in this modest area is organized through parallel sections enriched by modules containing services. These services often become accesses to the towers that accommodate lodgings for researchers. This module is repeated in a regular way and stressed with a certain rhythm. Thus we created a flexible model, easily adaptable to different situations or places (for example other areas in Marghera); in this way it is not an isolated system but a spacial unit that repeats and defines different functional units. service

This concept is characterized by an open Urban net, permeable in both North-South and EastWest directions; a single unit of our model in micro-scale can be used in a macro-level later. Transports in our area follow some axis that cross it in North-South and East-West directions. Seaweeds are collected in panels made of glass (2.6mx70cmx2cm) where they grow through sunlight, then transfered in generators with the consequent tranformation into biogas, energy source used to produce electric energy and heating. The stams that characterize some tower sides are 1.80 meters long and, thanks to the wind action, they move and store energy that can be used by the structure help.

Culture and art have to travel, they have to be spread, shared and communicated. The tradition of the Guggenheim Foundation is carried out continuously considering a type culture that keeps on traveling, international and contaminated by the encounters that took place in its long journey towards the goal.

07 - Fondamenta De Manglar
First of all, starting from the heart of Venice, we considered Canal Grande, with St. Mark’s square connected to Giardini area through Riva degli Schiavoni, as if one was a satellite place and composing a linear and harmonious seriousness that links water and earth. A one-to-one correspondence can be found in a veiled potentiality along the bank of Cartagena. The main theme of the project was the use of “Manglar”,that should invade the first part of “Canalazzo” in few years. This prevision became a status quo for us and we started thinking of four planning parts simultaneously: 1) 2) 3) 4)
reactivate the bank as a public square; break down the “Manglar” wall; make the “Canalazzo” accessible, now invaded by “Manglar”; bring back the balance between St. Mark’s Square and Giardini area.
The masterplan is composed by a complete reorganization and geometrisation of the bank in the first part of channel, with a “fondamenta” that is shattered just in some parts to allow water to move in. Moreover, we considered the idea of re-contextualizing the sports facility in the north- eastern part.

Regarding the first point, we created a public raised quay, to make an altar to social life; a welfare, linear and fundamental focal point for the citizen that, through dismantled stairs and the reproposal of full and empty spaces of the bank outline, could reproduce a direct relation with water.
Secondly, we focused on the south- western area of the canal that has the major part of “Manglar”, so it needs a research of spatial clippings in it. We read Venice as a combination of full and empty urban spaces, then we recognized four main squares: Campo San Polo, Campo Santa Margherita, Campo Santo Stefano and St. Mark’s Square. We literally extracted the shape of these locations from their place of origin , this allowed us to remove the corresponding substance from the “Manglar”, in order to create a series of squares with a Venetian mold.
As for the third point, we cut out an itinerary to establish a main flow to manage the city navigation, with a similar shape and size of Canal Grande.

The goal of our studio consists on the definition of a project, a part of the urban fabric composed by residences, commercial activities, offices, with the mixture that characterize the city. The student is expected to design a project which gives answers about living quality and relationships between the project and the urban structure, but also about the quantitative and functional matters, to coincide with requests about the quantity of residents and their characteristics (families and students).

UNDERGRADUATE WORKS 2013 - 2014
From the beginning of the Masterplan planning, it was immediately clear the need of maintaining the continuity and the distinctiveness of the urban structure of Venice through the use of unique ethical and aesthetic features, enhancing its quality and reducing its weaknesses. It is a structure that shows a continuous mutation in space extent in map and in height, in the achitectural language of the facades of buildings, in construction and covering materials; as if the city wanted to show us the large variety of minds, but also the moltitude of schools of thought that have contributed to its building. Through these observations, it has been recreated an area that evokes the courtyard system by means of the elevation of buildings coming from a different concepts, but also with a different height and with a semi-independent architectural language, except for some common features, typical of the Venetian environment. The choice of the plant morphology is imposed by the wish to reproduce a varied environment, in which you could both move quickly below a building and walk through the main “Calli“ surrounded by shops and public places like cafés or offices. Regarding the building placement, we considered the contrast of feelings raised by the closeness of historical constructions because if on the one hand this particular environment amaze and astonish tourists, on the other hand it breathtakes to the inhabitants, who cannot move freely, depriving them of the pleasure of opening a windows without having a really close construction. In fact, the analysis of the historical buildings in comparison to more recent areas showed the trend of enlarging the “Calli”. This is the reason why, through the construction of main axes, architecture has begun its evolution history, appropriate to establish an area with the same ethical and aesthetical characteristics of Venice.

UNDERGRADUATE WORKS 2013 - 2014
The developed project’s aim is to obtain the best solar exposure through a volumetric modeling.Starting from a linear shape, the Southern façade has been tilted in favor of the solar orbit to raise the residence lighting. Simultaneously, the Northern facade has been tilted on the courtyard to maintain the volume and to create a relation with the opposite building producing the perception of a semi-private space in the court. Then the covering has been tilted in order to maximize the view towards the sky thanks to the ceiling windows, and also to create a uniform lighting to the habitable top floor.
The ground floor is planned with the idea of maintaining the space as permeable as possible to people thanks to copious entries and a walkable covered place along the area. Inside there is a study hall, a cafĂŠ, a travel agency and a clothing store.Externally, the facade of 3,50 m high and entirely made of glass soars the building and lends lightness to the general architecture. On the first floor there are flats for students, while on the second and third floor duplex apartments are designed.

The main structure is realized in reinforced concrete, and the covering is made of steel. Regarding the facade the material is Corian, which is a versatile, renewable, easy to maintain and one of the latest generation composite; the choice of this material, suitable to cover walls and coverings, turns out to be the best for this project.
