SYNOPSYS Six months after a huge earthquake, a burglar masked as a priest is forced by his partner in crime to bless homes built for local people and pocket donations. He will have to choose between his greed and his mercy.

DIRECTORS’ NOTES The main theme of the short film ‘The Aquila Miracle’ is the contradiction between the actual and constructed reality that the town of L’Aquila has lived since the earthquake. The former is that of a community destroyed by the quake. The latter is a big pretence, almost a L’Aquila-shaped film set, propped up by the media to portray a reconstructed town that has re-emerged from under the rubble. The real reconstruction, however, never happened. In L’Aquila and its surrounding areas, tons of debris is still left untouched from 6th April 2009, whilst weeds engulf roads and stray animals roam freely. Life seems frozen still in the crumbling and hazardous buildings. Meanwhile, scores of people still live in hotels and barracks or in council flats on the coast, hundreds of kilometres away from their town. There is no plan for reconstruction.

From the outset we sought to portray L’Aquila as no man’s land, even when, in September 2009, Onna’s pleasant prefabricated houses were delivered and it all seemed settled. Instead, that was the beginning of a bitter and disturbing illusion. Today the people of L’Aquila are still desperately trying to take back their town, after false prophets, such as our Don Rocco, have taken advantage of the chaos to sell false hopes. The film is shot from the controversial view point of both a jackal and a voyeur, something we have all been at least once in front of live TV images. Our final aim is to overcome television’s manipulations of its reports and imagery by scrutinising this tragedy and its invisible protagonists through cinema’s penetrating lens.

PRODUCTION NOTES To convey the reality of a land abandoned to its own devices, we worked with a team that really understood the trauma that L’Aquila experienced. We also secured the support of three outstanding professionals of Italian cinema: Fausto Russo Alesi (Actor), Mario Amura (Director of photography) and Clelio Benevento (Editor). Both Mario Amura and Clelio Benevento worked in L’Aquila on the film ‘Draquila’, directed by Sabina Guzzanti. The logistical and economic support provided by businesses in Teramo and L’Aquila, and the firefighters and citizens of L’Aquila was indispensable. In particular, we could not have made this film without the support of our sponsors and co-producers, Dmen Srl and Macromax, all of whom believed and invested in the project.
