Ciudadela & Plaza del Danzón Distrito Federal, México
Thesis Project, Universidad Iberoamericana Team: Rodrigo Alba, Guillermo Arriola, Rocío Galán, Steffano Schiavon
The main feature of this project is that it emerges from the ground, creating series of cracks that serve as directional corridors that take the user ten meters below the street level. The concept emerged from the will to preserve the vibe and pedestrian flows of an existing park and plaza that rest in front of a 19th century building. The architectonical program consists of a sports club, offices, two anchor stores, restaurants and parking garage. The structural design was complex due to the clayish ground of the plot. Three different systems were used: inclined corrugated steel sheets that helped to preserve the trees, eighty centimeters thick diaphgram walls that contained the pushing ground and concrete cores with habitable beams that counteracted the horizontal forces. The scope of this project went from the economic feasibility to the construction detailing. This project gave me the scholarship for my master studies.

Healing by Scarring Bern, Switzerland
3rd Semester of Master Studies, Universität Liechtenstein
The bold idea of this project, was to refurbish and re-densify a 60's modernist housing settlement in a developing district in the city of Bern. The new construction was thought to be added within the existing building's footprint, allowing to weave the urban grid and preserve the existing green areas. In order to reach a high density factor, the housing units host only the basic needs such as eating, sleeping and cleansing. All recreation and living spaces are meant to be shared, encouraging people to interact. These spaces are carefully placed throughtout the project such as the transition deck which is located in the roof top of the refurbished building and works as a connector with the new addition. All corners of the project share a communal program, such as cafeterias, kitchens, tv- rooms, libraries, music rooms, day cares, youth centres, etc. The construction of the additional volumes had to be light weight, making wood the perfect material, and to keep true with the construction system, the envelope was designed in the same material, giving the existing settlement a new homogenic image. The wood of the façade went through a charring process (Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi) due to energetic and maintenance reasons.

How can we intervene the consolidated district enhancing a retrofitted life span without loosing identity?
_Concentrate housing in Ostrasse, Bismarckstrasse and Graf-Adolf-Strasse polygon _Locate services on groundfloor _Free the courtyard space for farming and public green space _Apartments from 30 to 150 sqm _Users: couples ,families, elderly homes and communities (student housing and cooperatives)
_Concentrate commerce and services areas between Berliner Allee and Oststrasse _These developments should be mixed use with health/wellness centers, sports facilities and leisure activities. _No big retailers (specialized shops and services)
Parking & Built-up courtyards
_Concentrate office areas in the already existing financial clusters _Minimize the working space (work hours logistic) _The buildings that would be freed should be adapted as densified communities and housing buildings with commerce on the groundfloor

The refurbishment of the central district of Düsseldorf has been a current topic due to the lately decay of the area and the importance it has, being the portal or gate to the city. The project is based on a master plan that intends to liberate the courtyards of the existing blocks to create connections and interactions between inhabitants and users.

The housing typologies and mix respond to actual and future demographic trends, trying to have a multigenerational neighbourhood inside the district. In order to create interactions and avoid gentrification, an open green courtyard is proposed as a platform for daily encounters through passages, small plazas and pavilions placed in between harvesting lots that generate a green topography. The façades of the new buildings keep the proportions of the existing volumes, while the structure is a reinterpretation of the original materials by recycling the concrete left from the demolitions. The concrete skin represents the blend between old and new, giving a porous texture that evokes big stone blocks.

SCHWARZ | ARCHITEKTEN
Switzerland Research project, Diestrich Schwarz Architekten , ZĂźrich Team: Rodrigo Alba, Steffano Schiavon
This research project emerged after the current urban policies that have been issued in Switzerland. The government is willing to densify the city centers and reduce the building permits on the cities' outskirts to avoid urban sprawl. We focused on creating a catalogue of potential development plots within the city centers and the selection was based on their proximity to railway stations and connectivity nodes. Each plot was classified in one of five strategies: Infrastructure , industry , residual spaces, public housing and development areas. Each plot was marked on a map of the city where it is located as well as a possible urban strategy. An inventory with data such as postcode, state, connectivity, size, density factor and regulations was made for each plot. Each plot had an independent format layout in a physical catalogue. The catalogues condensed a total of 400 possible development sites that were later presented to different development companies and clients in Switzerland such as WuĚˆest & Partner, Halter AG, Losinger & Marazzi AG and Implenia Schweiz. As consequence of this research, the office partnered with different developers and several test plannings and competitions were produced in Dietrich Schwarz Architekten. -13-

Our concept was to bring back the historical image of the site, which was delimited by canals. We connected an existing green forest area on the south with the northern mountain vegetation, setting our building borders towards the lake. The internal parks, paths and canals shape four different building sites or islands, as we called them. Each island has its own identity and has different housing typologies for a multigenerational settlement. The ground level is slightly elevated in most of the volumes due to archeological and water levels. The public uses are located within the first two storeys, giving a programatic retribution to the city inhabitants.

Wohnsiedlung Klosterbr端hl Wettingen, Switzerland
Competition, Dietrich Schwarz Architekten, Z端rich Team: Cesar Alberola, Denisa Balaj, Robert L端der, Steffano Schiavon
This competition came to the office as an opportunity to redesign and a adapt a 50's housing settlement in Wettingen, a commune in the north of Switzerland. Preliminary studies doomed the old development and adviced the architecture firms to consider complete demolition. Dietrich Schwarz Architekten stood firmly on its mottos and values regarding sustainability and wise use of resources (reducing grey energy) and as a team we decided to keep the existing volumes and urban structure and give them a complete refurbishment. The floorplans were redeveloped to fit the present needs, and each building had a lateral extension that gave the users bigger living areas or extra sleeping rooms. The buildings were given new insulation layers and a new wooden skin. To save the existing trees and give the settlement contained and well designed green areas, wooden balconies were given to each apartment. We gave the housing complex a completely new community room and a kindergarden. These two volumes were placed on the access corner and represent the contemporary face of the project. Services such as parking, storage rooms and the shelter room were placed under the new volumes, upgrading the actual situation of the Klosterbr端hl Wohnsiedlung.

La Montana Luxury Resort Klosters, Switzerland
Project, Dietrich Schwarz Architekten, Z端rich Team: Dietrich Schwarz, Rodrigo Alba, Denisa Balaj, Guillaume Chapallaz, Robert L端der, Steffano Schiavon
This project was developed from the urban scale and it is meant to give the ski village of Klosters a five star plus hotel that will trigger a different type of tourism in the area. The architectonical program comprises ninety rooms, a gourmet and a daily restaurant, a ski bar, cafeteria, ballroom and congress center, spa/wellness resort, a japanese tea house, indoor and outdoor pools and series of outdoor terraces that fit into the landscape. The terrain's slope made us design a basement that hosts the parking lot, a supermarket, a post office and part of the congress center and wellness resort, linking the programmatic spaces under five wood and glass volumes that host the rooms. Our job as office was to design the development from the big scale to the detailing, allowing us to be involved in the interior design as well, bringing an "alpine chic" ambiance that blends into the sorroundings. The project is currently under process and the construction is meant to start within a year.
