first things first: No apologies will be made for the summer I spent at the Strand's upper-most level (where I discovered Joseph Stella's fixations). Nor should you expect any regret for the unblinking internet-wandering, gallery-lingering and don't-try-this-alone discoveries (namely, a trip to Staten Island). And if you'd like some explanation for the creation of this periodical, I haven't any. In 2012, the Siren maintains her allure: a hum, a forgotten face (you squint to remember it), a roadside crash, the so-

close-yet-so-far window display, the ten words you skim before finally landing on the definition of "haberdasher." She exists in every distraction, diversion and tangent. Mythology trains us to drown out temptation by corking our ears (Ă la Odysseus in Coney Island Odyssey,) but here at TFBN we urge you to feed these impulses—there's nothing better than satiating your own tastes and peculiarities to which this ‘zine is both a means and an end. As you were,

Stela Xhiku

“I didn’t say you could take my picture!”

This is where the bus let us off on Arthur Kill Road. We found an old graveyard with tombstones dating back to the 1700s.

A nearby gas station. Inside, the station owner was happy to show us the Coca-Cola vending machines he kept in the back. We asked him if there was a path that would take us to the water. Stela wanted to cut through the hills, but the station owner told us that the entire terrain was a fenced landfill.

Stela was stubborn to board the boats. We walked the perimeter of the shore hoping to find a better route. Most of the properties were owned by companies who built high fences, perhaps anticipating the odd (and unyielding) trespassers. Stela climbed many trees and fences often exclaiming that we were close.

There was only one clear path to the boats—a small house hanging 5 American flags and—less ceremoniously—a ‘No Trespassing’ sign. We agreed to knock on the door, for fear that a backwoods man would not take kindly to intruders. Stela knocked and an old man answered. He interrupted her introduction, instantly aware of our business on Arthur Kill Road: “Yes, you may,” he said, “But you have to be very careful.”

The graffiti on the boats was evidence that other people had done what we had. For many of the boats, only the metal interiors remained.

Stela and I headed back to the bus stop, numb with exhaustion. We discovered a rodent graveyard under a dark overpass with birds hiding in various corners of the bridge. After 20 minutes of waiting, the bus arrived.

The ride back to the Staten Island Ferry was a prolonged sigh of relief. The adventure is never so sweet as its anecdote.
