Selected Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet Bibliography Jean-Pierre Jeunet (French; born 3 September 1953) is a French film director, producer, and screenwriter. His films mix elements of fantasy, realism and science fiction either to create idealized realities or to give relevance to mundane situations. A former animator, his movies are marked by quirky, slapstick humor, alongside surrealist visuals. Debuting as a director with the acclaimed 1991 black comedy Delicatessen alongside his collaborator Marc Caro, Jeunet went to collaborate with Caro once again with The City of Lost Children (1995). His work with science fiction and horror led Jeunet to become the fourth director to helm the Alien film series with Alien Resurrection (1997), his first and only experience with an American film. In 2001, he would find his biggest success with the release of Amélie, gaining international acclaim and reaching BBC’s 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century. Jeunet’s films often lack a sense of realism; the vivid sense of surrealism which pervades his films is created by his extensive use of color grading and exaggerated color tones, riotously lighting up the screen in a hypnotic fireworks display of iridescence. Referring to the specific ranges and tints of colors in his films, Jeunet remarked, “I want to modify the reality, so I feel like a painter.”

The Adversity

Film Theme Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s films are humorous, romantic, fantastic, but also hazy, bittersweet, and sad. The director is good at setting off the inner world of the characters and the social reality through his unique cinematography, high contrast color schemes, and realistic settings. He can closely link his personal creative ideas with elements of real-life so it resonates with viewers, making the essence of the films vivid. In his movies, marginalized characters who are in adversity are still very optimistic and maintain the good qualities of human nature. They are like a gentle light in a dark environment, which fills the audience with warmth and hope.

Guiding Narrative

What After encountering various people and tests, marginalized people get help and are inspired to pursue happiness, dream, and the meaning in their prosaic life through their kindness, strong belief, and rich inner world. Finally, they will find the place where they belong.

Who My name is Julie, a mid-age unknown painter. Painting is the only thing that I’m good at.

Where I have always stayed alone in my painting room.

What I like daydreaming and turn my inspirations and ideas into paintings. In my eyes, they are alive and play with me. I am afraid to communicate with people, but I can freely sail in the world I imagine.

I‘ll choose Julie as a point of view, the materials will surround her living environment, which is her small apartment and painting room. The materials may include some furniture, her paintings, the texture of pigments, painting tools, some photos, sketches, her journal, her collections, and her strange angle to observe the world.
