Small Hotel Complex

The proposed complex is located on a site by the sea in the eastern part of Thessaloniki. Our proposal creates a “section” between human activities and the natural environment, public and private space. The synthesis consists of three circles translated into mathematical sets. Each of them identifies the type of activities and the privacy character. Between the first- “public” and second- “semi-public” circle commercial activities are developed, while moving to the “private” – rooms - circle a resting place is created at intersection points. As someone navigates in this complex, ends at these points where he could contact with other people and the nature. Structured blocks are arranged amphitheatrically and are unified by large shelter that reaches the street level. The underneath semi-outdoor spaces are recognized by skylights. The only element that interrupts the horizontality is the slender lighthouse tower.

Thermi Urban Planning

Thermi is a town located 14 kilometers southeast of Thessaloniki in a wider suburban area. . The centre of the town is a dense core around a square. Most buildings compine the residential function with those of trade, recreation and services. On the outskirts, structure is more sparse. The main problems are the lack of public spaces and parks and the increased traffic, especially in the center. According to strategic plan, three new urban units will be realized in the northwest of the existing, in order to ensure the containment of the widespread building. Our proposal aims to the hyperlocal character of the region and its connection with the main city. Initially, an agritourism area will expand between Thermi and a nearby village – Triadi. Furthermore, a pedestrian street by the stream and a traffic-calmed one enable safer movement and promote cultural and natural itineraries . This sustainable management of the environment and natural resources will result in the social, economic and urban development of the municipality.

Thermi is in vicinity with the airport, the commercial centre (Mediterrenean Cosmos) and the cultural centre (NOESIS)

Red Warehouse Restoration

The Red Tobacco Warehouse was constructed in 1960 in western Thessaloniki. It is a representative example of the modern architecture movement in Greece. The building will be reused as a business innovation centre. The red bricked shell, the horizontal elevation, the volume and shape are the most distinguished characteristics of warehouse. The synthesis follows three axis: clear separation of 3 buildings, commitment to the grid: circumferential motion around the patio. By removing the existing fencing, an attempt to connect the adjacent roads is performed. So, a passage is developed on the ground floor connecting the longest sides and providing communication with the surroundings. Staircases and ramps provide an easy access and on the side of the blocks, at the end of the passage there is a screen where the activities carried out in the building are advertised. The roof becomes an attraction for residents by creating an outdoor cafeteria on it. Its airy shelter of stands opposed to the compact building.

Expansion joints divide the warehouse and the middle part serves as a transitional space

Transit Station and Marina

This studio is about the creation of a station of marine transportation and its connection to the terminal metro station as well as various other facilities (shops, restaurant, recreation areas). The study area is next to a dense urban fabric. At the same time , within its limits university buildings , the judges’ school , jockey club, sports centre, the urban bus terminal and the under construction subway terminal are included. A key factor in our design are the characteristics of the Greek landscape that the under study area shows (diffusion limited, imaginary, transparency), the perception and the understanding of space through personal memories and experiences (phenomenological approach). The public space consists of paths and points of interest. In order to maintain the horizontality of the landscape, we try to respect its characteristics. So, we were led to the concept of alteration of emotions, drawing inspiration from the experiences caused by the existing situation of the nature. This resulted in 3 emotional states: “stress”, “serenity” and “disorientation”.

“stress” is as an alteriation of emotions, a city lifestyle with intense rythms, a place where most movements happen and all the buildings are placed. Here visitors coexist with multiple types of users : the traveler , the passerby , the local resident .

“serenity” is experienced as emotional rescue mode, as a lifestyle with low rates, close to nature. It is situated on the peninsulas where the sea views are unimpeded . Here users interact with nature .

guidelines

at “disorientation” feelings are varied, as the destination is uncertain and the view is blocked. It is located in the middle of free and natural area, accessed by 3 paths. Visitor randomly selects a route and becomes a vagrant

Mount Museo

“Mount Museo” is a museum about the architecture of Thessaloniki. As the second largest city in Greece, it has a long history and timeless presence , forming a kind of palimpsest. So, the central idea seeks to express the state and evolution of architecture in the city at various times as well as the economic, social and cultural circumstances that affected it . Occurs , thus the idea of layering as well as that of traces left by one period to another. In this way , the narrative scenario is structured as follows : The exhibition is structured into 5 sections- “ cores “ , each of which has two subsections . The route of the exhibition starts from the unity of recent events and continues with a flashback , starting from the Hellenistic period and ends in nowadays. At the end of the permanent exhibition , the visitor meets the session of the temporary exhibition. Regarding the morphology, it was important that the building should express the museological idea. Thus, the museum is divided into 3 levels: Level 0/public , level -1 and the 1/exhibition.
