Mixed Use Residential | Algiers Point, New Orleans, LA A n d r e s S t e l l | Georgia Tech | Fall 2006

This project looks at the relationship between the natural and the man-made, the fragile, and the permanent. The kit of parts moves from the more fragile, natural state to the solid concrete forms found in the circulation.

Mixed Use Residential | Algiers Point, New Orleans, LA A n d r e s S t e l l | Georgia Tech | Fall 2006

The courtyard spaces mimic natural forms, and attempt to connect back to nature allowing nature to become the literal skin on the wall systems.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Museum and Memorial Wall | Atlanta , GA A n d r e s S t e l l | Georgia Tech | Spring 2006

A Museum and a Memorial Wall connect the Martin Luther King Historic Site into one cohesive unit, tying Auburn Avenue and the parking lot to the tomb. Currently the site is divided into separate parts, each existing without real relation to the other. One can walk from the parking lot to the visitor’s

center and leave without realizing that across Auburn Avenue is the tomb of Martin Luther King, Jr. The linear procession of the Memorial Wall will lead visitors from the parking lot south through the site, constantly directing visitors towards the tomb, past the proposed Museum, which acts as a gateway between the linear procession, Auburn Avenue and the tomb. There are two primary walls in the design. The long

Memorial Wall that directs the view and the path of the visitor towards the tomb, and the large curved wall that acts as a monumental sculpture that opens towards the tomb and turns the corner lining the visitor up with Auburn Avenue and the view towards downtown Atlanta. The long Memorial Wall acts as the main element of an open-air museum and pulls one south where it rises to become the wall of the indoor

museum that acts as the threshold to the tomb. The ground leading to the wall is carved down with steps that allow one to approach and experience reliefs and exhibits at the base of the wall as it rises up out of the ground. The cuts in the ground pick up the rhythm of the existing and prior urban fabric that once was felt more strongly throughout. The cuts in the ground become larger as one progresses south towards the Museum and the tomb. They create two divergent paths that separate the visitors from each other. The cuts into the ground that lead visitors to the base of the long wall and the underground open exhibition areas are incised within a sliver of

space that is defined by the wall, which is aligned with the edge of the site, and a second line, that is obliquely pointed towards the tomb. People walking along the Memorial Wall can look up and see people above them as they continue experiencing the sculptures and carvings up close, and are eventually brought up into the Museum from beneath the ground in plain view of the tomb across the street. The visitors who remain at the street grade, can look down upon the visitors at the Memorial Wall, as they walk a relatively straight path southward. But as they reach the Museum, and their

visual connection to the tomb is more evident, their path is denied by glazing. From this point they can look down and see the visitor that had entered the Museum from below ground, rise up and cross Auburn Avenue to the tomb, and are forced to retrace their steps and drop down to the lower level against the Memorial Wall, or walk past the end of the building and arrive at Auburn Avenue in a plaza that faces the two churches and is bound by the Museum.
