DELIVERING SUPERIOR SAILING PLEASURE
Our competitors in the yachting industry claim we care too much about things yacht owners don’t see.
And yes indeed, we do care - and so do X-Yachts owners, because it’s the unseen that makes the difference. We call it the X-Yachts qualities and you can read more on the next pages.
You will also see a chapter with our new Xc 47 - a gorgeous high-performance cruising yacht.
It’s anything but a humble yacht, it has stunningly beautiful shapes and performance far beyond the norm.
Xc 47 is a well-equipped blue water cruiser that can be sailed safely by two people. Secure, comfortable, and tremendously stylish, with an interior design that provides the same good feeling as a modern Scandinavian home.
It has a tall and elegant rig that awakes attention - even from a far distance - and indicates that here comes a delightful yacht where sailing qualities are prioritized as highly as aesthetics. Without comparison the Best Bluewater Cruiser Ever Built, and we can hardly wait for the world premiere in January 2024.

Kræn Brinck NielsenDARE TO DREAM
BEST BLUEWATER CRUISER EVER BUILT…
Have you reached a point in your life where you can finally focus on your true dream? And does your dream include open ocean and far away destinations?
If so, Xc 47 is the boat for you. We have quite simply created the best bluewater cruiser ever built. It’s not only the fastest, as you would expect from an X-Yacht. It also has built-in features that makes it easy to handle, even shorthanded. Also, there is a high level of safety and comfort, that stays intact even in rough weather on high seas.
We believe all sailors at some point have looked at the horizon and wondered what it would be like to just take off, head into the unknown, and experience whatever adventure that comes your way. To feel the surge of the big ocean. To manage whatever challenge that could arise out there. To see new islands and coast lines appear over the horizon. To meet new people and new cultures.
Behind is a desire for freedom. You can probably recognize it. And maybe that is what a bluewater cruiser really is: A path to ultimate freedom.
If your true dream is to experience this level of freedom, we can promise you one thing: With the Xc47 you can go anywhere. And you can go fast, safe and in style and comfort.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
Even though the dream exists at some level in most sailors, few actually end up crossing oceans in their own boat. It takes quite a lot of dedication to do it, and dreaming is not enough. You will need to prepare.
And the list is long: Creating time and space requires accept from family and friends – and your work environment needs to be prepared. You will have to budget for it. And of course, you will need a boat that is up for the adventure.
Not all boats are. And even if you choose a well built, well designed and robust vessel, there will still be a lot of equipment to install and a lot of technical preparations to be made.
As soon as you leave the coast and enter open ocean, safety becomes a major concern. The experience will not be very good if you start worrying about the boat's ability to take care of the crew and yourself. Structural integrity is the first thing: Once in a while, huge waves will pound the hull and strong winds will load the rig heavily.
We are proud to say that after building more than 6.500 yachts – many of them sailing around the world – an X-Yacht has never lost a keel. The steel frame and structural integrity of the hull are designed and built with great care and attention, to be able to withstand whatever conditions you might encounter on the high seas.
The Xc 47 fullfills all these requirements for safety, peace of mind, and comfort at sea, so that you can outline your dream.
The Xc 47 has a large tank capacity. You need to be able to carry sufficient supplies of water and diesel. The tanks are positioned midship and below waterline, to increase stability and reduce pitching. Multilevel floors make it possible to keep larger tanks and technical installations below the floorboards. The yacht is equipped with a strong engine, able to get you out of trouble and cover even long distances, when sailing is not a viable option.
For this kind of serious adventure you will need state of the art electronics, extra anchors, safety/emergency gear, maybe a watermaker and a lot of other things.
INTERIOR
When you walk into the living quarters below deck in an Xc 47, you will feel like entering an architect-designed Danish living room. Light flows from above. There is space, comfort – and a feeling of minimalistic luxury.
The first thing most people will notice when looking at the lines, is the shape of the superstructure. We have introduced an elegantly raised superstructure over the saloon area. This provides a better view of the surroundings when under deck. Also it provides more natural light and an opportunity for multilevel floors. This allows the vast majority of technical installations to stay amidship below the floorboards – which increases the usable storage areas throughout the interior.
Danish design and architecture are famous for its clean and timeless style, and X-Yachts has always been a part of this tradition. X-Yacht owners often talk about a special X feeling, something that greets you every time you step on board. We know this feeling, and for us it’s a constant process to refine and enhance it each time. Looking at the Xc 47, we are proud of how far we have come.
All this is incorporated with great care in the Xc 47.
So now you know a little more about what it takes.
And you also know that if you want to go – we have the boat for you.
Still, the cockpit is where sailors spend most of their time. It’s also where they work the sails and maneuver the yacht. While designing the Xc 47, cockpit ergonomics were an especially high priority. In most cases, bluewater cruising is actually shorthanded sailing, so being able to handle everything with just a few hands is crucial. In a true bluewater cruiser, most lines need to be led to the steering position, and winches need to be reached from the helm. At the same time, sail handling cannot interfere with space and comfort in the cockpit, since this also is an area for relaxing and enjoying.
THE Xc 47 IS ROOTED IN 44 YEARS OF BOAT BUILDING
HOW WE DESIGNED IT
The design process leading up to the Xc 47 incorporated various facets of inputs from X-sailors, X-Yachts Design team and dealer network and changed and grew multiple times.
As a unique thing, we built a full size model – a so called mockup – that could be heeled up to 20 degrees. This provided us with a unique 3D test platform, and the opportunity to test different design scenarios in real life.
Being able to move around in a physical environment made it possible to sense directly what the right solution would be. Not only when the yacht was docked, but also how things would work under sail, when the yacht was heeled over.
CEO Kræn Brinck Nielsen calls this the best yacht ever built at the yard: “The Xc 47 is rooted in 44 years of boat building. And I’m proud to say that the Xc line is brought to a whole new level”, he says.
CARBON REINFORCED
The Xc 47 is built from a full vacuum infused epoxy/e-glass sandwich, together with our famous signature steel frame. Areas exposed to high loads are reinforced with carbon fiber, a part of making the yacht stronger and stiffer without adding excess weight or increased structural geometries in the interior.
The hull lines have maintained the deep V-shaped bow sections, generous rocker, and higher stern overhang from previous Xc models, providing the well-known comfortable seagoing characteristics. Furthermore, the hull features modern, wider stern sections, incorporating a subtle soft chine that provides extra form stability and improved reaching performance. Also, this design provides a great feel of space in the aft cabins.
The hull is built in a full vacuum infused epoxy/e-glass sandwich, with our famous signature steel frame. Areas exposed to high loads are reinforced with carbon fibers, a part of making the yacht stronger and stiffer without adding excess weight or increased structural geometries in the interior.
The freeboard features hull windows stylishly shaped with a unique X-signature reference, letting light inside the cabin, and offering an incredible view to the outside scenery from the saloon sofa and from each berth.

Efficient, user friendly design. Beautiful lines. Top grade materials and build quality. X-Yachts’ DNA has developed since 1979 – but in reality, our cultural inheritance goes even further back in time.
If you take a closer look, you will find that everything has roots. Through the 20th century, classic danish design gradually came to life as an internationally acclaimed trend. The foundation was an already existing tradition for solid handicraft, combined with the possibilities of the still fairly new industrialization. After the second world war, growth and optimism created a huge demand for industrial production of well designed products.
The new, urban middle class wanted lighter, more functional furniture, adapted to the new generation. In this setting, a group of great Danish designers, helped by modern industrial production, made danish furniture and other domestic products world famous.
BORN FROM A HERITAGE OF DANISH DESIGN AND HANDICRAFT
IT’S ALL ABOUT DESIGNING PRODUCTS THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME AND MORE
The style or design philosophy can be condensed to a combination of functionality, aesthetics, quality and simplicity. The basic idea is that good design not only looks good – primarily, it serves the user’s needs. Through the post war years, Danish design became increasingly known for durability, a timeless look, comfort and sustainability. Today it’s well known that Danish design icons age with beauty. It simply understands the user’s needs and serves them in a way that provides quality of life. They are products meant to be used.
The classic Danish furniture designers had a vision: To adapt form to the human body, not the machine. They actually studied and measured human anatomy. And their focus point was human behavior. Core materials was not steel and glass, but warmer, locally crafted materials: Wood, leather, wool, braided straw. The style was named nordic modernism.
Danish design is also an expression of culture – an example is how furniture for children reflect the Scandinavian attitude of making space and having empathy for children’s unique needs. Furniture for kids are not just down-scaled adult items, but products adapted to how children really function.
Apart from being user friendly and aesthetically pleasing, an important trait of Danish design is the insistence on build quality. Using high grade materials and producing with the intent of a life long relationship with the user creates a natural sustainability. This is the trademark of true classics – be it houses, chairs or boats.
By furniture designer, Børge Mogensen, 1958”MY GOAL IS TO PRODUCE THINGS THAT WILL SERVE MAN, PLACE MAN IN THE LEADING ROLE INSTEAD OF ADAPTING MAN TO THINGS WITH THE VIOLENCE AND POWER OF THE DEVIL”
ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR DESIGN AND HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS
Danish design culture is found in various aspects of life – especially buildings, furniture, household items and interior design. Danish architecture has also contributed to the concept. Jørn Utzon is probably the most recognized Danish architect, his most famous work being the Sydney Opera House.
CULTURAL INHERITANCE
The Danish design culture is engraved in everyday products and a natural part of life in Denmark. This shows in architecture, furniture, kitchen utensils and so on. The design philosophy is based on functionality, aesthetics and quality, and these values can be found even in the way kids are raised and educated. Public buildings are designed on this foundation, and are often decorated with Danish designed furniture and lamps. Danish Design is simply our cultural inheritance.
THE MARGRETHE MIXING BOWL
A mixing bowl should not only look pretty. It has to feel right when handled. The Margrethe mixing bowl, now a part of our X-Living series, was designed in 1947 and named after the present Queen of Denmark, Margrethe. Apart from a rubber ring being added at the base of the bowl in 1968, the design has remained unchanged ever since. Today, the bowl is sold in more than 25 million copies world wide.
THE X DNA: BORN FROM A HERITAGE OF DANISH DESIGN AND HANDICRAFT
How to describe the DNA underlying the boats we build? Well – the short version is that we create yachts that sail well in a variety of wind conditions and sea states. Yachts that offer luxurious comfort. Yachts that are safe and reliable and provide pure enjoyment at sea. Every detail, from the hull lines through to the world-class craftsmanship, stem from this.
But don’t take our words for it. Ask our customers. Through more than 40 years, X-Yachts have established a customer loyalty most other boat yards can only dream of. We are lucky to have knowledgeable owners, that understand and appreciate the difference. And they keep coming back.
IF WE WERE TO EXPLAIN THE REASON FOR THIS IN JUST ONE WORD, THE WORD WOULD BE QUALITY.
NOW, WHAT IS BEHIND THAT TERM? WOULDN’T EVERYONE SAY THAT?
Well, the difference between X-Yachts and other yacht builders lies in how the yachts are designed, built and specified technically. X-Yachts is the only internationally reputed boat yard that controls the whole process in-house, from design to composites and final assembling.
Also, it’s a question of culture. X-Yachts was founded by passionate sailors that really wanted to create something special. And they knew that to accomplish their goal, they had to work hard and long hours. Right from the start, the tradition at X-Yachts has contained an almost fanatical attention to detail and a constant drive for innovation. We were always real sailors. We simply know how to make a boat that works. Not only in the harbour or on the anchorage, but also on the ocean.
As a Danish yard, we have always been proud carriers of a lineage of boatbuilders that knew how to build a yacht that could stand up for anything the ocean could throw at it. Reducing production cost has never been the main priority at X-Yachts. Instead, features and equipment are chosen, no matter the cost, to ensure all models excel in our key areas: Efficient design. Beautiful lines. Top grade materials and build quality.
In short, this is pretty much what we stand for as a boat yard. This is the ground we stand on. This is our DNA. We simply build boats based on a long heritage of designers and naval architects that really understand what a true sailing yacht should be. And today, there are 6.500 yachts out there to prove it.
So, if you ask what we mean when we use the term quality to describe our DNA, this is our answer.
HOW DO WE DO IT?
The famous X sailing performance is obtained through a combination of high stability, efficient hull lines and a powerful rig. We are especially conscious about weight distribution. The hull is light, most of the weight is centered low and midship. The keel is heavy and securely mounted to a steel frame integrated in the hull structure.
This creates a very stable vessel, that can stand on it’s feet even when loaded up with a large sail area.
Low resistance hull lines help the boat translate all of this to safe, comfortable and fast sailing in any condition imaginable.
We also prioritize designing and outfitting our boats to be easy to handle, even shorthanded. Our technical installations are based on more than 40 years of experience, so we know what we are doing. Below deck you find the result of X-Yachts’ pride in boatbuilding as a Scandinavian handicraft tradition. Danish design in high quality materials is implemented in all our boats.

EASY FURLING GENNAKER
The name says it all. North Sails introduced the Easy Furling Gennaker for cruisers who want the reliability of top-down furling without sacrificing the ability to sail deep downwind. This sail is designed to maximize sail area, constructed with lightweight nylon spinnaker cloth, and is engineered exclusively for cruising downwind. Scan
THE X-YACHTS RANGE
WHAT IS PURE X? THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
A STYLISH HYBRID OF PURE PERFORMANCE AND ULTIMATE FAMILY CRUISING
The X range is designed to meet the demands of sailors who want to enjoy sailing in a wide variety of conditions as well as have all the luxury you would expect from the clean, timeless Danish style that is synonymous with X-Yachts.
The first X43 was launched in the summer of 2016, representing exceptional sailing abilities and spacious airy interior in a luxury style. It was popular from the very beginning with its functional design working both at sea as well as in harbours. With the success of the X43, it made perfect sense to continue with the X49 and the X46, both launched in 2018. The X40 – Boat Of The Year award winner 2020 – was developed and launched in 2019, and in 2021 came the flagship X56, selling three times the expected numbers already in the first year. In 2022 the new X43 was introduced and sales immediately boosted with 40+ units.
POCKET LUXURY
The X40 – winner of European Boat Of The Year 2020 – is the entry model in the Pure X range, blending quality, performance and styling with cruising capability.
With the introduction of the X-65 in 2007, X-Yachts started to infuse hulls for performance yachts utilising epoxy resin. Epoxy infusion construction offers fantastic control over the laminate allowing it to be optimised to maximise strength and stiffness, whilst saving weight.
In the X40 all weight saved is used to increase the yacht’s stability enabling the crew to have a more relaxed time and to feel safer and more comfortable. The fact, that the hull is cured, baked at high temperatures for almost 24 hours, not only optimises the hull material properties, but also minimises the risk of the darker coloured hull surfaces to suddenly start postcuring, losing the surface finish.
With over 10 years of experience building epoxy infused yachts, X-Yachts took the decision in 2018 to build all models using this technology, one of the only yacht builders to do so.
SAILING THE X4 0
The X40 can sail fast and point high to the wind thanks to its powerful lines, precision moulded composite T keel with a heavy bulb of lead giving a high degree of stability. The standard upwind sail area of 78 m² enables the X40 to hit upwind speed of 6.5 knots already at 12 knots true wind speed.
TECHNICAL
The X40 comes standard with the latest generation 40 HP Yanmar diesel commonrail engine. The engine is mounted onto special rubber shock absorbers to minimise vibrations, and the engine compartments fitted with sound reduction insulation to minimise noise.
MAST & RIG
The X40 benefits from an efficient sail plan with the discontinued rod rigging and tapered double spreader mast. As with all X-Yachts, the standing rigging is specified above industry standard to match the stiff hull construction, reduce stretch and to stop the mast pumping whilst sailing upwind into a heavy sea. This rig is incredibly stiff, providing a reassuring feel of safety and maintaining excellent sail shape and trim, satisfying the demanding cruiser and also appealing to the crew, who want to take the X40 racing.
DECK LAYOUT
The standard deck layout comes with 4 winches: two halyard winches for self-tacker sheet and control line winches next to the entrance, and two main sheet winches aft of the cockpit’s backrest coamings within reach of the helmsman. The deck has an integrated recessed self-tacker track for an 88% jib. The sail plan can be made even more powerful with adding longitudinal Jib tracks and two dedicated Genoa sheet winches on top of the cockpit backrest coamings, enabling the Genoa size to go up to 106% for improved light wind performance.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
The interior of the X40 was designed to maximise the space available, creating a functional, safe and stylish user experience below deck. Once again, the interior design has proven Danish design flair and carpentry at its very best. The craftsmanship and detailing are of a very high standard, being traditional, but with a modern appearance. The wooden veneer is Nordic Oak as standard, with other options on offer. There is plenty of natural light and ventilation throughout the entire accommodation.
CONSTRUCTION
At the heart of the X40 is the galvanized steel keel grillage structure. Pioneered by X-Yachts back in 1981, the galvanized steel hull girder offers superb reassurance and safety. Its primary role is to spread keel and mast loads into the hull, but it also enables the yacht to withstand extreme shock loads from grounding or an impact with a submersed object. Not only is the keel structure immensely strong, but it is also reliable and very easy to inspect for potential damage. Bolted to the steel grillage is the keel with iron fin and heavy lead bulb with moderate draft. There is both a shallow and a deep draft option available.
LAYOUT OPTIONS
The X40 is available in a 2-cabin and a 3-cabin layout. The standard layout has a head compartment with separate shower compartment to starboard aft of the forward-facing navigation station with full length sofa.
OPTIONAL LAYOUT 1
OPTIONAL LAYOUT 2
REDESIGNED HULL AND S-BOW DESIGN
The redesigned hull shape features wider stern sections above the waterline with the widest point brought further aft and with soft chines. This increases the downwind performance and allows for a much wider cockpit aft. Furthermore, the S-bow design and integrated standard bow sprit introduced on the X56 have been incorporated.
The mast height and hence the sail plan have been increased compared to the previous model to add to the performance and utilize the added hull stability. The longer bow sprit allows for bigger and freer flying gennakers.
DECK & SPRAYHOOD
The deck and deck liner have been completely redesigned. The appearance of coachroof and coamings is brought to the more modern styling of the other Pure X models – and beyond.
The deck layout features longitudinal jib tracks as standard, but a self tacking track recessed into the cabin top is available as option. However, when this option is not chosen, the recess will be covered so that the aesthetic flush appearance of the cabin top is maintained.
The cabin side portlights are designed with the same type of openable sections as on the X40 and X46 allowing for better ventilation and a simpler aesthetic appearance.
The cruising sailor can look forward to a redesigned sprayhood layout – and apart from protecting the family from rough weather at sea, the shape of the sprayhood will be offering a sleeker visual appearance and a better forward view for the helmsman than on previous designs.
“THE NEW X4³ CAN TO SOME EXTENT BE DESCRIBED AS A SMALLER VERSION OF THE X5 6 . THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MODEL IS CONSIDERED TO BE A NATURAL EVOLUTION INCORPORATING THE LESSONS LEARNED AND THE VISUAL APPEARANCE OF ESPECIALLY THE X4 6 AND X4 0 , AND AFTER HAVING LAUNCHED THE X5 6 , WE SAW SOME OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE X4³ TO LIFT HER TO AN EVEN HIGHER LEVEL”.
SPACIOUS COCKPIT
The X4³ cockpit area is wide and spacious and at the companionway, the hinged acrylic doors and integrated rope storage at the sides – provide good rope storage and comfortable access to the cabins.
THE INTERIOR
The wide aft section of the hull and slightly raised cockpit floor allows for spacious aft cabins and berth.
SPACIOUS LIVING
Danish design and architecture are famous for their clean, timeless style. It showcases luxury whilst also being functionally designed to work out on the open seas or moored up in harbour. Superior quality, detailed interior carpentry and selected materials it apart from mass produced boats, delivering an exquisite, natural interior. Numerous deck and hull portlights allow for ample natural light to flood in, gifting the interior with a bright and roomy ambiance.
Plentiful storage space throughout allows for an uncluttered, ‘live on board’ lifestyle, giving you a place one can retreat to when the weather outside is less forgiving.
EXTERIOR
The hull is made using vacuum infused epoxy sandwich lamination technology to ensure maximum strength and safety. The combination of high keel weight and powerful sail plan makes the X43 a dream to sail into wind and waves.
Plenty of fixed hull and deck port lights as well as openable deck hatches and portlights ensure maximum interior ventilation and light. Six well-sized, selftailing winches for halyards, genoa and main sheet.
All X-Yachts quality features including encapsulated lead keel, hydraulic backstay adjuster, discontinuous rod rigging, and Spectra halyards are standard.
THE PERFECT FAMILY CRUISER
The X46 is a hybrid between the X43 and the X49, sitting exactly in the middle. Shortly after her launch, the X46 was nominated European Yacht of the Year 2019.
LIGHT, STRONG AND STIFF
Epoxy construction saves weight and maximises strength and stiffness. In the Pure X range, all weight savings are used to increase the yacht’s stability, enabling the crew to have a more relaxed time and be safer and more comfortable. X-Yachts is one of the few production yacht builders building all hulls in epoxy vacuum infused technology.
SAILING THE X4 6
A hull with powerful lines and a precision moulded composite T-keel with a heavy bulb of lead gives a high degree of stability. This enables the X46 to sail fast and point high to the wind. The 64 m2 mainsail and 41 m2 self-tacking jib makes the X46 at 12 knots true wind already hits 7 knobs boat speed.
MAST & RIG
An efficient sail plan with discontinued rod rigging, tapered double spreader mast and a deck layout that satisfies both the demanding cruiser and the crew who wants to take the X46 to the race course.
DECK LAYOUT
The standard deck layout comes with 4 winches: Two for halyards, selftacker sheet and control lines placed next to the entrance, and two main sheet winches aft of the cockpit’s backrest coamings within reach of the helmsman. The deck recessed genoa self-tacker track is for an 88% jib. There is an option for coach roof top fitted longitudinal genoa tracks and two dedicated genoa sheet winches on top of the cockpit’s backrest coamings, enabling the genoa size to go up to 106% for improved light wind performance.
CRAFTMANSHIP
Once again, the interior design is Danish quality carpentry at its very best. The craftsmanship and detailing have a very high standard, being traditional but still with a modern appearance.
The wooden veneer is Nordic Oak as standard, with other options on offer.
There is plenty of natural light and ventilation throughout the entire accommodation.
TECHNICAL
The X46 comes standard with a 57 HP Yanmar diesel common rail engine, and a 2-blade folding propeller on an S-drive installation. The engine is mounted on special rubber shock absorbers to minimise vibrations, and the engine compartment has high quality noise reduction.
CONSTRUCTION
A vacuum infused epoxy full sandwich hull, galvanized stell keel grillage, cast iron keel fin with a heavy lead bulb with moderate draft. A shallow and a deep draft option is available.
LAYOUT OPTION
The standard version offers 3 double cabins. Both aft cabins can be supplied with X-Yachts topside-hung pipe berths. The owner’s cabin has an ensuite head compartment with adjacent shower unit as standard. Standard layout features a forwardfacing navigation station with full length sofa.
NO COMPROMISE
Following the success of the X43 , X-Yachts launched the X49 at Boot Düsseldorf in January 2018.
The Pure X range is a true embodiment of the key feature setting X-Yachts apart from the competition. Faithfully following our passion, X-Yachts has always designed and produced yachts that deliver superior sailing pleasure.
The X49 enables the crew easy handling in all conditions. Whether doing family sailing trips, long distance blue water cruising or competitive sailing, the X49 offers the best combination of everything X-Yachts has developed over the years.
“The X49 is squarely aimed at the nocompromise sailor who wants it all. It combines a comfortable, stylish interior, with clean, beautiful lines on deck and can even be raced with a minimal crew.”
Pip Hare, Yachting World

It is also available with two twin berths, with the ability of converting into a large double berth using a cushion which fits in the space between.
There is an option for an additional shower in the aft head when the backwards-facing chart table is chosen.
SUPERIOR SAILING PLEASURE
The X56 is a fifty-six-foot performance cruising yacht designed with serious cruising in mind, be it crossing the Atlantic, exploring beautiful Mediterranean islands or the Scandinavian archipelago. The X56 joins the hugely successful Pure X Range.
The design philosophy was very clear from the outset – like all our yachts, we place a huge emphasis on giving the owner a superb and comfortable sailing experience, on a yacht that is easy to handle.
You will experience the feeling of confidence and control with the X56. The helm position offers excellent visibility and agile handling that puts you in control.
The modern outboard mounted pedestals free up deck space, maintaining a clean and uncluttered cockpit to relax and entertain. The X56 has various pedestal options to select from.
FLEXIBLE SAILPLAN
It could be argued that the sail plan for any yacht is one of its most important features. For more than 40 years, X-Yachts has accumulated a wealth of knowledge about how to build fast sailing boats. This experience has been put to good use; X-Yachts’ racing pedigree can be seen as soon as you stand behind the wheel of the X56. This is a yacht designed and built by sailors for sailors.
DECK LAYOUT
The deck of the X56 has been designed to bring all the sailing control lines back behind the main seating area of the cockpit, keeping it safe and clear of ropes
4 powerful winches take care of all of the halyards and sheets and are set up so they can be controlled easily at the helm - or a separate trimmer. The deck has an integrated recessed self-tacker track for an 88% jib.
The X56 can also be specified with coach roof mounted longitudinal genoa tracks with sheets and car adjusters led below deck and back to the cockpit winches.
A rope bin is placed at the aft end of each cockpit bench. Here, sheets and halyards can be stored when not in use.
TRANSOM GARAGE
The X56 has a large transom door that also forms a bathing platform. The transom garage is large enough to store a 2.8 m inflatable tender.
The tender can be manoeuvred into the garage using an optional integrated crane, making launch and recovery a simple affair.
The X56 can also be fitted with an optional telescopic gangway to allow for easy boarding when moored stern to.
HELMSMAN’S SEATS
The X56 can be specified with optional teak and stainless steel helmsman’s seats, mounted behind each of the wheels.
INTEGRATED BOWSPRIT
The X56 has an integrated carbon bowsprit as standard, providing attachment point for asymmetric spinnakers with the stainless steel anchor arm fitted below.
The innovative stem design in the hull allows the code-0 and forestay furler to be positioned further forward, maximising J length and increasing upwind performance.
SPACIOUS SALOON
The well-proportioned saloon gives the yacht a spacious feel. Well-positioned handrails and good furniture placement ensure that it is always safe and easy to move around, no matter the sea conditions.
The central pouf seat can be converted into a coffee table and repositioned as required –this offers flexibility.
CHART TABLE
All layouts feature a large dedicated forwardfacing chart table. The large chart table is perfect for navigation and offers good storage facilities. On the side of the chart table is a deep pocket, ideal for storing almanacs, binoculars etc.
The nav station is the yacht’s communication centre as well as the main hub for its electrical systems, with DC switch panel and electrical breakers easily accessible.
Above the chart table a set of lockers allow a variety of navigation electronics to be fitted.
SOLAR PANELS
The X56 can be fitted with optional solar panels which can be recessed into the coach roof teak, to provide a flush and fully integrated look.
Solar panels can help keep your batteries topped up and reduce generator hours when on long distance cruises.
LAYOUTS
The X56 has a number of layouts available, primarily revolving around the choice of galley.
The galley is available in four options, a traditional closed galley and a modern open galley. Both closed and open gallies can be extended aft, which replaces the port aft head and offers greater storage space in the port aft cabin.
SAIL PLAN
The fractional sail plan is easy controllable. The standing rigging is solid rod rigging and the permanent backstay adjuster is hydraulic. A carbon rig with a taller P (mainsail luff) is optional.
WHAT IS XCRUISING? A SPACIOUS AND LUXURIOUS X-YACHTS CRUISER
DEDICATED LONG DISTANCE CRUISING YACHTS WITH ENJOYABLE HANDLING UNDER SAIL.
The Xc range contains X-Yachts’ more cruising oriented models. The range has been developed and modified over the years, and presently two models are on the program: The Xc 50 and the Xc 47, the latter being launched in January 2024.
We have implemented many improvements based on feedback from a fleet of over 300 Xc-yachts worldwide. Just like our Pure X range and Xp range, the Xc models are now built using epoxy infusion. The hulls are postcured to improve structural properties of the composite. Added value to this production method is weight reduction.
The exterior includes optional jib self-tacker, composite bowsprit and our anniversary 2019 colour scheme. Interior upgrades include Nordic oak furniture and new upholstery types, cushion design and new interior fittings throughout. System upgrades include new tank displays showing remaining volume in litres and upgraded ambient lighting.
Xcruising is an evolving concept of dedicated long distance cruising yachts with enjoyable, shorthanded-friendly handling under sail and luxurious amenities below deck – all built for real offshore sailing.
BLUEWATER CRUISING IN ELEGANCE AND COMFORT
The Xc 47 marks the beginning of a completely new generation of Xcruising. Building on the success of the existing Xcruising range that started with the launch of Xc 45 in 2008 and now adding further focus on long distance Blue Water Cruising, comfort, safety and ease of use, this elegant bluewater cruiser has been created.
The cockpit layout has been designed with the shorthanded cruising crew in mind, mainly by making handling of all lines possible from the helming position. Four winches – two on each side – are positioned in front of the wheels. All relevant trim lines are led in channels under the deck from the mast to the steering position, with jammers reachable for the helmsman.
Near the transom, a large aft deck accommodates a comfortable full-width seating area behind the wheels, as well as a nice sunbathing area. As it should be on a true offshore yacht, the cockpit is deep, well protected, and with a closed transom.
INTERIOR
The first thing most people will notice when looking at the lines, is the shape of the superstructure. We have introduced an elegantly raised superstructure over the saloon area. This provides a better view of the surroundings when under deck. Also it provides more natural light and an opportunity for multilevel floors. This allows the vast majority of technical installations to stay amidship below the floorboards – which increases the usable storage areas throughout the interior.
The efficient storage volumes hidden behind the sturdy, yet elegantly crafted surfaces of the interior, enables the Xc 47 to carry provisions for long periods of time, with the crew enjoying the lifestyle of true blue water cruising.
LONG DISTANCE CRUISING STYLE
Design details include minimalist flush opening deck hatches, smart interior recessed teak stripes, stylish lighting, and a choice of bimini and sprayhood options.
The innovative Xcruising folding transom includes additional features: A hinged life raft storage compartment to starboard, and an extra storage compartment to port for a stern anchor or flammable materials such as diesel cans. The centre of the transom folds down electrically to form a bathing platform – with optional davits for a tender.
The Xc 50 is easily sailed short-handed with halyards led under-deck aft to self-tailing winches (including electric options) and a central fixed cockpit table with storage box and a console for navigation instruments.
The sail plan has been designed specifically for long distance cruising, and includes a 106% overlapping jib and 94% self-tacking non-overlapping jib.
The Xc 50 will reach maximum hull speed in approximately 9 knots of true wind speed, when using the 140% overlapping genoa.
The mainsail comes with slab-reefing as standard. There is an option of in-boom furling.
The Xc 50 is the largest model in the Xcruising range and offers a wide array of custom options to allow owners to create an elegant, personalised luxury yacht.
MANY CHOICES
Standard options include an extralarge owner’s cabin with ensuite heads, incorporating space for appliances such as a washing machine.
The Xc 50 can also accommodate a forepeak crew cabin and central master head. Aft there are two roomy double cabins, with the option of both ensuite. An extra spacious galley can be created with additional worktop space to port. This comes with the choice of a single aft head with shower. The galley features space for two refrigerators, optional microwave, and a Nespresso machine.
Interior finish choices may also be customised with a choice of contemporary and traditional materials, to complement the hand-finished furniture made by X-Yachts’ own craftsman joiners.
THIS YACHT IS DESIGNED FOR SOMEONE WHO DREAMS OF CRUISING BUT DOES NOT WANT TO GO SLOWLY.

In line with the rest of the Xp range, the 50-footer utilises epoxy infusion build processes for improved stiffness with reduced weight, a carbon keel structure for maximum safety and ultimate stability, and a precision moulded composite keel with iron fin and lead bulb giving a high ballast ratio.
A choice of standard aluminium or optional carbon rig packages, and standard or deep draft keels, allow Xp 50 owners to optimise their yacht for cruising or racing, shorthanded or fully crewed, inshore, offshore or bluewater sailing.
EXTERIOR
The Xp 50 features the modernised exterior expression including the light grey side decks, new colour options, updated water lines and newly designed portlights. The pushpit, pulpit and stantation bases have also been redesigned to create a sleek new look. The ‘T’ keel and rudder sections have now been optimized for improved performance and to create a more pleasant helming experience.
The Xp 50 bow features a removable stainless steel anchor fitting, neatly integrated as standard below a removable GRP cowling. Alternative options include a carbon bowsprit with or without integrated anchor fitting, for setting large asymmetric and code sails with ease, or a flush cowling. A flush anchor deck hatch conceals a large 1500W anchor winch and also provides access to a separate sail locker with optional crew berth.
Concealed control lines run aft with a ‘Maxistyle’ mainsheet system for a clutter-free, functional and comfortable cockpit area. There is a choice of bimini and two-pole sprayhood with opening window, together with the Xp folding cockpit table for flexible entertaining space. Liferaft storage is integrated under the cockpit sole, while the transom garage accommodates an inflatable tender. The electrically operated transom door also forms a teak-topped bathing platform with stainless steel swim ladder.
LIGHT & SPACIOUS
The Xp 50 interior is dominated by a feeling of light and space thanks to the numerous skylights, the large coach roof windows and also thanks to its new oak finish on bulkheads and joinery. The imitation teak floorboard gives a new character to this very bright interior.
The Xp 50 hides an incredible amount of storage in overhead lockers along the entire cabin length, under sofas and in many very practical lockers.
The two large hull portlights in the saloon offer a great view of the outside scenery from the 6 people saloon sofa and the starboard bench.
The large U-shape galley offers safe and comfortable conditions to cook at sea and includes all the essential elements to make you feel like home: large top-loading fridgefreezer completed with an optional 85-litre front-opening fridge, a built-in microwave and a Corian worktop.
LAYOUT OPTIONS
Owners can choose between three different chart table options: A forward-facing dedicated navigation station, an aft-facing chart table with instruments hidden behind overhead locker doors, or a sliding module which offers the advantage of facing forward at sea while using very little space when not used. The Owner’s cabin has been redesigned for the new version of the Xp 50. Both the feel of space and the storage capacity have been optimised to guarantee compatibility with a cruising program. The berth is hiding large amounts of organised storage, accessible via drawers and lifting mattress. Larger window apertures in all cabins provide even more light and visibility.

BOAT CONTROL AND MONITORING
The X-Yachts Design Team has created a unique ‘Ease-Of-Use’ experience like we know it from high-tech cars and the modern houses that many of us live in today.
X-Power uses an advanced yet intuitive digital switching system that controls and monitors all vital functions with a few steps. At the helm, the owner will have full control over all features required for the various situations the boat will be used in, in combination with this the on-board buttons or an APP will allow the user to extend the control any place around the boat to his/her convenience.
When entering the boat, one action will do the work to power up the entire boat and its functions–, .and when you are ready to drive, again, turn the key or push the button. This will ensure the required systems are automatically switched on including the main breakers navigation, autopilot system and more for fast and easy departure.
When safely back in the harbor, the onboard system powers down the complete boat but keeps the lights on for you long enough to safely leave the boat.
X-Yachts’ newest feature is an advanced remote system that are monitoring the status of fuel, battery and water level and even turns on the boat system remotely. It will potentially also be possible to upgrade the security with a system that shuts down the boat in case of unauthorized use.
HELM STATION
The Helm Station is carefully designed to be userfriendly and intuitive allowing the driver to focus on enjoying the boat ride in comfort and safety. The navigation / in-boat system is operated via two integrated 16” multi-function screens at the helm. With only a few operating items at the control console, the boat is easy to pilot for the skipper. The built-in control units fit seamlessly into the panel, and thanks to intuitive guidance and easily accessible controls, the X-Power is quick and easy to operate.
BOW ANCHOR
The X-Power comes with an anchor locker and anchor gate as standard. A semi automated bow anchor launch system with remote launch is optional.
STERN ANCHOR
An electric stainless steel stern anchor system with remote launch is optional.
THE ENGINES
OUTBOARD

When choosing twin installation another level of maneuverability is possible, introducing Joystick docking that allows the user to power the boat sideways or rotate on its own axis, and GPS anchor to lock the boat at position, at dock or as temporary anchor.
INBOARD
The X-Power 33C comes as standard with a Yanmar 8LV 320 hp engine. Optionally the boat is offered with a 350 or 370 hp version. As an added safety option the single engine installation a bow thruster can be chosen.
The bow thruster provides 2.2 kW and enables the driver to maneuver the X-Power 33C near coastal waters, channels or when entering or leaving a port.
THE CABIN
When creating the interior of the X-Power 33C, the designer has selected the very best quality materials giving a luxurious first impression. The cabin cushions are produced in a durable upholstery and will ensure a comfortable lying position and a good night’s sleep. Furthermore, there are plenty of light sources in the cabin.
IN THE PRODUCTION OF X-POWER 33C, WE ARE USING THE PATENTED PETESTEP ® TECHNOLOGY THAT OFFERS A MORE COMFORTABLE AND FUEL-EFFICIENT BOAT RIDE.
SOFTER
Conventional spray rails with their flat surfaces are associated with hard landings. Petestep® deflectors, on the other hand, dampens landings and lowers slamming by up to 50%, resulting in unmatched ride comfort.
QUIETER
No more clatter in waves! Because Petestep® hulls don’t have any horizontal flat surfaces that smash the water under the hull, the biggest source of hull noise is removed. This makes Petestep® hulls create a lot less noise from waves, which significantly adds to the comfort of the ride.
LEANER
Petestep® hulls reduce resistance by removing friction and reducing energy waste. Up to 35% less energy is required to propel the boat forward, which could lead to significantly lower fuel consumption at comparable level of comfort.
MORE STABLE
Petestep® hulls increase stability, both at speed and at the dock. At zero speed, Petestep® hulls have a wider footprint that makes the boat less prone to heeling. When at speed, the deflectors stabilize the boat, once again contributing to a better ride.
ONLY THE IMAGINATION DEFINES YOUR DREAM X-POWER
X-Power comes with three hull treatment options:
• Lacquered hull available in all colors
• White gelcoat finish
• Full foil wrapping in all colors and custom prints

QUALITIES YOU DO NOT SEE
Our competitors claim we care too much about things yacht owners don’t see, and yes, we do care - and so do X-Yachts owners. We call it The X-Yachts Qualities.
Every sailing vessel has hidden features, and here are a few you don’t normally see. They are central features, making X-Yachts the premium brand it is. When your eyes fall upon an X-Yachts , you will probably feel good about what you see. Especially if the boat is yours. One of the most profound pleasures of owning a yacht, is looking at it and enjoying its beauty.
The same goes for the sailing performance: An X-Yacht moves faster, smoother and with less heeling than most other boats, and you don’t have to be an expert to experience it. And you don’t necessarily have to know much about how it was achieved. But it’s well known that we don’t build the cheapest boats on the market. And we would like to tell you, that a lot of the extra value is hidden in upgraded materials, advanced building techniques and special features, that are unique for an X-Yacht. So, if you’re curious – here’s a few of the elements that make our boats stand out the way they do.
enough, the boat will flex – especially when sailing upwind in waves. This can cause the forestay to lose tension momentarily every time the boat hits a wave.
This is called forestay pumping, and deforms the foresail in a critical moment, which affects performance negatively. An X-Yacht is a precisely engineered structure with enhanced hull stiffness. Forces from wind and water are absorbed by ocean proof, solidly dimensioned parts, all the way from the bottom of the keel to the top of the mast, and from the bow to the transom. This stiffness prevents forestay pumping, and ensures that even minor tuning adjustments of sails or rig are precisely translated to the change you aim for. Being able to adapt easily to changing conditions makes the boat perform well, and makes the boat a safer and more enjoyable place to be.
Every X-Yacht is delivered with rod rigging, and chainplates are integrated in a way that distributes and absorbs forces evenly through the hull. When an X-Yacht hits a wave, nothing gives in.
STEEL FRAME
The galvanized steel frame is probably our most famous signature feature. It has been a core principle in the construction of an X-Yacht since 1981. In some models, the steel frame has been replaced by a carbon fiber version, to save weight – but the function remains the same: To provide a safe and strong attachment between the keel and the hull. The steel frame makes it possible to use heavier keels, an important part of the inherent stability that X-Yachts are so famous for. The keel is bolted directly to the steel frame, and any force working on the keel – even sudden shocks from grounding or hitting debris in the water – will be absorbed and distributed evenly throughout the structure.
STABILITY/WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION
(VERTICAL AND LONGITUDINAL)
X-Yachts has always prioritized high stability through providing a low center of gravity. The keel is heavy, and the weight distribution in the boat is centered way down, near the water line. But longitudinal weight distribution is also hugely important in a sailing yacht. Excessive weight in the stern and transom will cause pitching and slamming. This is not only uncomfortable, but also transmits massive loads through the boat and slows it down. And X-Yacht has tanks and other heavy items mounted as close to midships as possible. Moving mass close to the centre of gravity reduces inertia, and increases speed and comfort when going through waves.
VACUUM INFUSED EPOXY SANDWICH
Vacuum infusion is a building process where dry fibres are placed in the hull mould, and covered in an airtight plastic membrane. Vacuum is applied, and resin added through tubes into the laminate. This process makes it possible to control the amount and distribution of resin very precisely in all areas, and provides a uniform, strong hull with an approximate 15% weight reduction. We use Gurit Corecell M foam between the two layers of laminate, a sandwich material with excellent impact resistance, high strength and low resin uptake. This build process provides a very light, stiff and strong hull.
TRANSPARENT BOTTOM LAMINATE/GELCOAT QUALITY
The strength and integrity of a composite structure relies on a complete saturation of the fibres. Resin (polyester or epoxy) has to be distributed and immersed completely throughout the whole fibre laminate, without dry spots or air bubbles. To make it easier to detect potential flaws during production, X-Yachts applies clear gelcoat on the bottom section of every hull. We use high grade gelcoat and epoxy treatment to prevent water ingress.
CENTER LIFT
X-Yachts are designed to be lifted using a single lift point integrated in the steel frame. This means that you can avoid using straps at the crane, thereby eliminating the risk of damage to propellers and rudders. Also, there will be no scratching of topsides or removing freshly painted antifouling. The single lift point simply makes things easier when lifting or launching the boat – and it proves just how strong and well balanced the yacht really is.
ENCAPSULATED KEEL
X-Yachts’ cast iron and lead keels are encapsulated in a reinforced epoxy e-glass shell, to guarantee a hydrodynamic and fair finish. The shell also protects the keel from corrosion. We use female moulded shells to make sure every keel stays accurate and faithful to the designed, original profile.
LEAD KEEL BULBS
Lead keel bulbs have a smaller volume than iron bulbs of the same weight. The use of lead in our bulbs means a 30% reduction of volume. Less wetted surface means less resistance and more speed.

DESIGN, HULL LINES
A well designed hull is what defines a yacht that can sail fast and provide a comfortable base for the crew in all conditions and on all points of wind. Our design office has a more than 40 year long track record designing yachts that are known all over the world for their efficient lines and fast hulls. We have always taken pride in doing our design work in house, and continue to do so today.

COMPONENT MATERIAL QUALITY
The loads in an X-Yacht are considerable – even more so because of the large sail plan. We build a strong hull and keel structure, but the rigging components handling the loads also has to be top of the line – and dimensioned correctly. We only use the best suppliers: Andersen, Harken, Reckman, Ronstan and Spinlock provide reliable rig components that are easy to use and maintain, and correctly sized for the loads involved. Lower specification Items of less quality or strength would be cheaper, but would compromise the high safety and easy handling of an X-Yacht.
ERGONOMICS, COCKPIT, EASY HANDLING
Behind the natural, free flowing experience of easy sail handling in a cockpit lies an extensive attention to detail, when it comes to ergonomics and work positions. To create a cockpit that really works, both for an active crew during racing and for relaxed cruising with family or a group of friends, is no small task. X-Yachts are well known for easy handling, and our racing heritage means that we know where every little thing needs to sit to make things work as effortlessly as possible.
From tenders to superyachts, Flexiteek 2G is the perfect choice for your dream decking. It is designed to give you the ultimate in looks, longevity and performance.

THE FIRST BORN BABY HAS TURNED CLASSIC
There are a few true breakthrough points in the history of leisure sailing boats. One of them is the X-79. Here’s the story.
Over the last years, the first ever (and smallest) X-Yacht has acquired a very special and precious position: It has become a cult object. Not only because the X-79 is the starting point for our world known brand, but also because it became the starting point for a a paradigm shift in designing sailing boats.
Wide, flat and lightweight constructions with an ability to to surf are common today. They are fast and fun boats to sail. But back in 1979 this was a new concept. The first steps had already taken place at the Banner yard, located exactly where the X-Yachts yard lies today. Here, boats based on similar thinking started emerging in the late seventies.
The young Niels Jeppesen was trusted to do the drawings for the popular and race winning Banner 30, and shortly after he designed Ravage 36, a one off boat for a customer.
Niels was not alone in these initial projects. Niels’ brother Lars was a boatbuilder, and their common friend, Birger Hansen, who worked at the Banner yard laminating fibreglass, was originally a shop clerk. The three of them worked closely together, building the prototypes for first Banner 30 and later Ravage 36. Having completed these boats successfully, they were ready for their own project.
The little team had all they needed: A design based on new ideas, and the knowhow and experience to build the boat properly. The facilities were as humble as you can imagine: The prototype was built in Birger’s garage. The boat was 7.9 meters long, and the year was 1979, so the name had to be something with 79. Not really knowing what to put in front of the number, they just painted an X – symbolizing the yet unknown.
A few months after the launch of the new boat Niels and Lars won the Round Zeeland Race, beating 1.500 competitors and finishing two hours ahead of the next boat. It was no less than a revolution. The prototype was immediately sold, and the brothers returned without a boat – but with a huge interest for their new model.
A subsequent race win in the Swedish Tjörn Runt race resulted in an agreement with a Swedish subcontractor, who started building the X-79 on a license. They made 100 boats over the following two years, and when demand surpassed even that capacity, a number of additional subcontractors were hired, mainly close to Haderslev.
THINGS DEVELOPED SURPRISINGLY FAST
The 1980 Round Zeeland Race, only a year after the convincing prototype win, had 50 X-79’s on the starting line. When looking at the top of the overall result list after the race, you had to count to number five to find a boat that was not an X-79!
The three founders were now running a busy and fast growing company. Still they had no employees, only subcontractors, and ran the whole thing on a shoestring budget, with late hours and low salaries. But they were already a team with well defined roles, and kept developing new models in a fast pace over the upcoming years.
In 1983, the X that became stuck on the X-79, finally became the company name.
And by 1994, when production stopped, a total of 468 X-79’s had been produced.
In many ways the 1980’s was a golden age for the sport of sailing: Class boat or one design racing was hugely popular and attracted big fleets. X-79 became a large and active class, with several teams having top names at the helm. The X-79 had a perfect size for
the format, it was fun and fast, and financially available for a lot of people. Fleets of more than 50 boats used to fight in the national Danish championship. Simple cruising was also doable, there were bunks and facilities for cooking below deck.
Countless models from other yards have since taken inspiration from this concept. And today it’s clear that when the history of yacht design is to be written, the X-79 has a strong position as one of the most influential boat designs ever.
But the story continues. Contrary to most other things, fibreglass boats don’t really perish with time. Most of the 468 X-79’s are
actually still sailing today. More and more sailors, newcomers as well as experienced, are discovering that the old X-79 is a very cost effective way to have fun on the water. Even though the boat is today considered a classic, it’s still in some ways a modern sport boat. A new generation of X-79 owners has started a trend, often finding more or less forgotten boats, buying them cheap and putting them back in mint condition. Employees from the boat yard have been especially keen.
The purpose is not only racing. Actually, a lot of younger sailors tend to like the simplicity of primitive cruising, bringing only the most necessary stuff and exploring the coast in small boats that don’t deplete their economy.
Last year, Pietro Giolli spent a month sailing his newly acquired X-79 across the Baltic Sea, from Pietarsaari in the north of Finland to the X-Yacht yard in Haderslev, Denmark – a good 1.000
nautical miles. Before leaving, he overhauled the boat completely – the whole adventure is beautifully described here: /www.x-yachts.com/ en/news/crossing-the-baltic-in-an-x-79/
But how about the prototype, build No 1? Does it still exist? Well, Birger Hansen, who built the plug in his garage with his two friends in 1979 actually found it in England a few years back. He bought it and brought it back to the yard, where it was put back to the exact condition it had when it left his garage 44 years ago.
So today, the first ever X-79, the cornerstone of the whole X-Yacht saga, sits just outside Birgers office at the yard, surrounded by it’s much larger descendants. All of them named with the X that just happened to be painted on the little red boat back in the garage, because Niels, Lars and Birger didn’t quite know what to call their 7,9 meter first born baby.
X-YACHTS OWNERS ASSOCIATION: 13 YEARS AND STILL GROWING
“To further camaraderie and pride of ownership of owners and crew of all X-Yachts”. This is the mission statement of XYOA.
Max Hubbard, chairman of XYOA, has been a driving force in the club since the beginning in 2010. “Some 13 years after setting up the XYOA, the association is busy and more popular than ever”, he says. “Today, XYOA has around 140 members, with the majority of its members living in the United Kingdom. But the international membership continues to grow, with members from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand and the USA.”
At least one rally is held every year, and places visited so far include the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and France. Lunches and dinners are organised at special venues including the Mary Rose Museum (Portsmouth), the Royal Yacht Squadron (Cowes), and on-board HQS Wellington (London).
“XYOA has created camaraderie amongst owners from different countries, who are cruising the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, supporting one another in remote locations”, says Hubbard. “Also, many members have crewed for other owners on long or difficult passages is such as crossing the Bay of Biscay or the Atlantic.”
Another area of activity is partnerships with selected “business partners”, who offer discounts to XYOA members, for example on yacht insurance and equipment.
There is an XYOA burgee, broach, tie and sailing jackets, so it would be difficult not to recognise an XYOA member in a foreign harbour.
On the more technical side, approximately 100 of the XYOA members participate in the private WhatsApp group with the regular sharing of information. During winter months, webinars are organised which also enables members to share technical, racing and cruising information. Information from these two sources have enabled a comprehensive technical library to be created on the members only section of the Web-site. There are now over 250 articles including servicing tips, maintenance, issue resolution, tuning and sail handling.
In addition, whether cruising or racing, there are articles on the website regarding Scotland, Majorca, Croatia, the Fastnet race as well as all XYOA rallies and events.
The annual sail training day in collaboration with North Sails is a popular event. But the 2023 season will also include summer rally to Plymouth, Devon with Dinner at the Royal Western Yacht Club and a 2023 Autumn rally and Lunch at the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes.
“However, no doubt the highlight of 2023 will be the 3-day VIP visit of members and partners in March to X-Yachts Denmark”, says Hubbard. “At the XYOA Dinner in the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth in September 2022, Global Market Manager of X-Yachts Torben Kornum invited XYOA to visit the X-Yachts Factory at Haderslev.
The visit includes exclusive private tours and discussions with Kræn Nielsen, Chief Executive Officer and Torben Kornum himself. So, with all of this going on, I am proud to say that XYOA really has become an international family of enthusiastic and passionate X-Yacht owners”.

STEP BY STEP TOWARDS MORE SUSTAINABLE SAILING
An electric/diesel hybrid system with high output regeneration became our first step towards the no fossil, zero emission future of sailing. Meet the X49E
You don’t have to be a fortune teller to predict a future with fewer combustion engines running on fossil fuel – and more electrical engines, fuelled by increasingly sustainable, green energy.
This is already playing out big time on shore. And even though things have moved significantly slower in the maritime world, we are also starting to see it happen on a bigger scale in the boating community.
Anyone visiting a boat show nowadays will notice the overwhelming amount of new products aimed at this major transformation. We have already seen the first electrical plug and play solutions in the boat industry – and this is only the beginning.
At X-Yachts, we decided in 2021 that the time was right for us to take up the challenge and take part in this development.
Kræn Nielsen, CEO of X-Yachts, explains it this way: ”We didn’t want to be first movers on this area, but preferred to wait until technology and knowledge had matured properly.”
The X49E was built in close cooperation with the first customer for this model, Danish X-sailor John Haurum. This turned out to be an interesting project, that not only fulfilled Haurums dreams, but also taught us a lot. Especially valuable was our cooperation with the leading supplier of electrical boat propulsion, Finnish OceanVolt.
The major challenge in any electrical propulsion system is having enough “fuel” – which is electrical power, stored in batteries. We are so used to diesel and gasoline, that most people don’t realize the enormous amount of energy that can be stored in refined oil products. A common fuel tank capacity for a cruising boat will be somewhere between 150 and 300 litres, and this can keep the vessel going for days and nights on end. A battery bank with a comparable capacity is practically impossible with current technology. It will be way too heavy, way too space consuming and way too expensive.
So, the choice you are given as a sailor, when considering an electrical engine, is either accepting a radical reduction in range by engine – or installing devices to charge batteries while sailing. The sustainable possibilities are solar cells, wind generators and/or hydro generators. Fuel cells are also an option.
But the realistic power output from any of these devices is limited. The only solution that can really preserve the full range we are used to from the combustion engine is – well, another combustion engine. Only this time in the shape of a generator, producing electricity from what still is the most energy dense storage medium – diesel.
A generator is a much smaller engine than in a traditional direct diesel setup, and it’s only used when the battery bank needs charging. Combined with a sensibly sized lithium battery bank, this will provide a system with full redundancy and full range. Most of the time, you will pull power from the battery bank and enjoy silent, clean sailing with no fumes. But when extra range is needed, the generator will kick in and supply the power needed.
This hybrid system is exactly what we designed for our first yacht delivered with an electrical engine.
John Haurum wanted to do long range, blue water cruising, and because of this (and since the yacht is fairly big) it was necessary to provide the extra safety of a generator. We also installed two electrical engines, to enhance power and redundancy even more.
After a full season of cruising and even racing, Haurum is very pleased with his new yacht. And at the yard we feel ready and well equipped to move on towards a future with more sustainable solutions for our customers.
“Every X-Yacht is designed with performance in mind – and the X49E is no exception. The X49E is the first X-Yacht built as a hybridpowered yacht.
It’s fitted with two10 kW electric sail drives, a 28,8 kWh Lithium battery bank and an onboard DC generator with a capacity of 11 kW. Important parameters when we designed the system was range, weight and price.
The hybrid concept was chosen to make long-distance crossings possible without worrying about distance limitations. A pure electric solution is also available if limited distance under engine can be accepted. After evaluation of the first season we can safely say that the system is reliable and the data are positive. Sailing on flat water in light air, at 11 kW of consumption – which is max output from the generator – boat speed is 6,7 knots. Under the same conditions, at 20 kW, which is max output from the two electrical engines, boat speed is 7,8 knots. The range increases radically with lower speed, and at 4 knots, range on batteries only can reach 30 nautical miles in quiet weather and flat water.
We are also excited to have the first Xc 47 delivered with a hybrid system very similar to the one used in the X49E. The new system will be upgraded, primarily with a bigger battery bank and a more powerful charger/ inverter. As a result, the range when running on batteries only will be even longer than the range of the first X49E.”
of X-Yachts:
“After first season evaluation we are very pleased”John Haurum, owner of the first X49E: A
MINDSET BECOMES A LIFESTYLE
“My plans for the X49E are primarily to use it for long-distance cruising, but it has also been specified with performance sailing in mind. Last year I participated in several races, including Around Denmark Race. Eventually I plan to do the ARC across the Atlantic. To commit to an electric sail drive is a mindset and perhaps a changed way of life at sea.
Sailing is all about harnessing the wind for energy and pleasure, and X-Yachts and OceanVolt have taken this mindset to the next level. The OceanVolt system stands out as enabling the use of the sail drive either for propulsion or powerful electricity hydrogeneration while sailing. X-Yachts is using this to build an integrated energy system also comprising of solar panels and a conventional backup generator, for the rare instances where continuous sailing for a motor is needed. I expect the system will fully serve my sailing needs, while largely being energetically self-sustainable.
Already in the first season I sailed 2.700 nautical miles and spent 7 weeks on board. And I loved it! The system performed as expected, there were no breakdowns, and I have no regrets. Diesel consumption was about 100 litres for the whole season.
Normally, when we docked for the night, I wouldn’t even bother to connect shore power. We would enter the harbour with maybe 80% power, after charging under sail during the day, and then spend some of it coming in. The next morning we would still have around 75%, which was more than enough to take off again. We always had ample access to power and propulsion. Charging could be done through regeneration or generator. When sailing 6-7 knots – which is low for the boat – regeneration through the props would already give us around half a kW. And the numbers would rise quickly with boat speed: At 9-10 knots we would harvest somewhere around 2 kW. Looking back,
I wouldn’t even say that I experienced any compromises, changing from diesel to hybrid. It was more like a lifestyle adjustment: In my previous boat, an X46, I could do 8 knots by engine if I was in a hurry, and I could do that for as long as there was diesel. Now, if I want a range only limited by diesel supply, I need to reduce this speed to 5-6 knots. The 11 kW generator will then take care of propulsion and still charge the batteries.”
