On the path to Re-use | Semester 10 | 2022

What’s in your mind? Why to reuse waste material? In current scenario pollution is increasing day by day due to burning these wastes which causes air pollution and other health issues. Therefore, taking an initiative and resolving a part of present and future global crisis, by using recyclable materials in building construction.

8

Architecture Portfolio | 2017 - 2022

What’s the aim of the Project? A world that educates and aware users the amount of waste generated and how it can be resolved by designing and reusing such materials in building construction. Therefore to design a centre that will itself incorporates such building construction techniques and setting an example for people.

On the path to Re-use:

Navigating and awaring people through learning center

T

he project intents to design a training center that will bring together locals, craftsmen, students, professionals and visitors in a same platform with a similar intention of reusing materials for an eco-friendly and sustainable life for future generation. To encourage and evolve mixture of traditional methods and modern techniques making it durable and self-sustaining. The design also aim to explore new and creative active and passive strategies or techniques which are suitable to the climate of the site. The design approach will also consider social, economic, cultural and environmental factors of the surrounding context.

The Labrary | Semester 6 | 2019

What’s in your mind? What does Labrary mean? The term is a combination of two words "Lab" refers to a space to experiment and "library" refers to a space to gain knowledge. Therefore promoting a space where people can learn by designing & experimenting some unique and fun reading space

Architecture Portfolio | 2017 - 2022

18

Why Labrary Project? To understand the multi layered programmatic and architectural complexity of a city and also to respond to a built Architectural language according to the surrounding urban context.

T

he project intents to provide a fun comfortable

environment for reading and learning. A space where people can come together and interact with each other. To become an attractive place for people and good alternative to spend their free time. The project responds to the architectural language of the surrounding context, which includes mixed-use developments that include a variety of programmes like a library, art gallery, cafe, digital convenience lab and daycare. The project’s primary objective is to successfully integrate into the neighborhood’s urban fabric while also providing a unique architectural identity.

The concept of common library is decreasing floor plates as the level increases so that every floor levels receive diffused sunlight to read.

“ A well-designed library includes spaces that encourage activities. The ambiance cheers the mood, character, quality and atmosphere of the library. For years, Library design has evolved from just a warehouse of books to a contemporary space for users.”

The idea behind the design is to hide many surprising and amusing elements like protuded staircases and double & triple height areas inside the building so that visitors will be more interested to learn about and explore more such spaces.

Kalakosh | Semester 4 | 2018

What’s in your mind? What does Kalakosh mean? The term is a combination of two words "Kala" refers to the skill involved with craft and "Kosh" refers to an archive.

Architecture Portfolio | 2017 - 2022

24

Therefore, the project is a platform where skilled people of the Kumartuli community can work and display their skills. Why Kalakosh Project? The project has a very strong socio-cultural context and it is important to understand the issues they are facing and provide with architectural solutions which they are lacking.

कलाकोश

KalaKosh: Center for clay idol-maker based community

T

he community centre "Kalakosh" is an outcome of

conserving the 50+ year old art of clay making idols of Gods and Goddesses in a clustered locality of Kolkata. The term is a combination of two words "Kala" refers to the skill involved with craft and "Kosh" refers to an archive. Kumartuli is an old native pottery town of kolkata and is home to hundreds of artisans who sculpt religious effigies throughout the year. The Hooghly river which flows by its walls also provides the clay for the idols sculpted there. Every narrow lanes in kumartuli is lined up with old and rustic multi-usable workshops that serves both a living and working space for artisans. These spaces changes over time that is during day time the space change into workspace and in evening the same space converts into living area. The town experience warm and humid climate therefore the infrastructure is build in response to the climatic condition. A typical workshop of the karigars at Kumartuli is a linear rectangular room with an entrance facing the road or the lane.

Location: Kumartuli, Kolkata. Area: 1184 Sqm. Academic: Semester 4 Category: Cultural Architecture Year Completed: 2018 Guide: Rashmil Rajgopalan Work: Individual Work

The walls are of bricks and slopping roof of tin shades and is supported on typical bamboo truss system and has mezzanine floors. The height of these workshops ranges from 18 feet to 20 feet. Very few units have conventional staircases while the rest have wooden or steel ladders.

2018 | Semester 4 | Kalakosh

25

“Earlier, the potters of Kumartuli used clay from the riverbanks to make pots to earn a living and now, they use their creative skills to make gods and goddesses.”

The design process starts with an idea of using biodegradable materials as building construction material which is a architectural replication of idol makers using reusable materials to make idols. Which makes the structure blend with the surrounding context.

The exhibition is designed in such a way that it is divided into four boxes and arranged it in a flow pattern (perpendicular to each other) in order to give a break between each blocks which serves as a semi open space, As a result visitors would be more motivated to see the entire exhibition.

he client wanted to create multi-usable spaces with maximum circulation under a certain amount of budget provided. As it is a school it should also have an appealing aesthetic appearance to students. Some of the areas were strategically designed for better circulation due to space restrictions.

Computer Lab + Conference Room

Computers arranged adjacent to wall for maximum at center.

Table placed in front of the display to have direct view while presenting.

2020 | Trainee | Renovating School Interiors

The client needed a space which can get converted into a conference room and computer room with maximum computers placed in it.Therefore designed an oval-shaped table with folding curve ends .As a result, the client can raise the foldable portion when needed and add an additional four persons.

Foldable ends which can be raise during conferrence when needed.

Toilet

2020 | Trainee | Renovating School Interiors

Folded Plates | Semester 9 | 2022

What’s in your mind? What are folded plates? Folded plate structures are assemblies of flat plates or slabs inclined in different directions and joined along their longitudinal edges. In this way the structural system is capable of carrying loads without the need for additional supporting beams along mutual edges.

Architecture Portfolio | 2017 - 2022

42

Academic: Semester 9 Guide: Smita Dalvi Category: Origami Architecture Year Completed: 2022 Work: Individual

Folded Plates:

T

he excersice executed in building construction studio was an attempt to understand the idea of long span structural systems and its relationship between materials and form. The project also demonstrates the inter-relationship between material, form and tension load. In the building construction studio, we learned that this structural system have an intrinsic rigidity and high load carrying capacity which makes them economical over long spans that need to be free of internal columns and other obstructions.

2022 | Semester 9 | Folded Plates

43

2017 - 2022 | Architecture Portfolio

The folded plate act as a roof which is supported by colums at either ends which is an example of simply supported structure where the loads are distributed equally.

What are Tensile Structure? Tensile structure is the term usually used to refer to the construction of roofs using a membrane held in place on steel cables. Their main characteristics are the way in which they work under stress tensile, their ease of prefabrication, their ability to cover large spans, and their malleability. Role in this project? Involved in design developement preparing drawings and model

Tensile Structure | Semester 9 | 2022 Architecture Portfolio | 2017 - 2022

44

What’s in your mind?

Tensile Structure:

T

he excersice executed in building construction studio was an attempt to understand the idea of long span structural systems using cables and its relationship between materials and form. The project also demonstrates inter-relation of tension and flexible materials as it is a structure that is characterised by the tensioning of a fabric or flexible material system to provide the structure’s main structural support (usually using wire or cable).

Concept

Academic: Semester 9 Guide: Smita Dalvi Category: Tensile Architecture Year Completed: 2022 Work: Group

The concept for tensile structure is inspired from the shape of a leaf, wherein two leaf form is faced opposite to each other. One of these forms are then shifted vertically creating a buffer space for entry and exit
