UNCLE KEEGS BY: NATHAN KEEGAN

Full Circle I’ve been skateboarding, actively, for 20 years (having a skateboard in your basement for 30 years and skating 3 times, doesn’t make you a skateboarder for 30 years). Not that that means anything but I have put enough time in to see waves and trends. Personally, I don’t bug on too many bad trends. I still skate the same way I always did. Still don’t skate over a 7.75, still primarily watch old videos, etc.

“Cool down. Don’t schedule tricks with filmers, etc. Just posse up and mob and I promise the city will take you in and show you a grand time.” The beautiful thing about skating is there really isn’t a right or wrong but I don’t like seeing boy’s asses in girl’s pants and what kind of socks you’re wearing but that’s just me. Whenever some 15 year old kid comments on my small wheels and board, I always tell them, “Dude, I remember when everyone was skating 7.4 Aesthetics boards and wearing cargos. Come talk to me in a few years and the way you were sold on your Janoski’s for the “board feel, bro”. You’ll be selling me on the Brian Anderson’s because of “that cushion and support, bro”. Like I said, to each their own but it seems exhausting to me to switch up your clothing, boards, etc., every 3 years. Anyways, my personal favorite time was mid-late ‘90s and early 2000s. The Mouse and Mixtape era and what I call the “Wenning pop out” era. I kept from watching anything new for literally years until recently. I saw newer footage of people skating to old rap, inner city skating, just pushing through NYC and SF, etc. Got me super psyched. Primarily the Palace vids. These guys GX1000, Mood NYC, Quartersnacks, Lurk NYC and Bronze 56k. Lil artsy, old hip hop city feel. Some antics and they never go full retard. It’s been a breath of fresh air watching these dudes and what they put out and I hope they never change with the stupid fucking trends. I’m just going to enjoy Camo being back in and shoes being not slippers and not D3s. Cool down. Don’t schedule tricks with filmers, etc. Just posse up and mob and I promise the city will take you in and show you a grand time. That’s the secret to downtown.

words & photo’s: liam annis Liam Annis: Yo Shawn lets get the basics down, where you from and how long you been skating? Shawn Macmillan: 23, Medford Mass., I started skating at 11, so 12 years. LA: How many times you been arrested? SM: 4. LA: Are they common crimes? SM: Yeah misdemeanor’s, don’t worry about the rest, ahaha. LA: What is this Cornerstore Skate Co. you ride for? SM: It’s an East coast skate company out of Boston, MA owned by Jimmy Lake. LA: Why you always smiling? What are you so happy about?

SM: Haha, I am? I dont know, man. I just always try to find something to laugh or smile about. I’m just a goofy dude, I guess. LA: So, you know some spots. Heard you showed the 5Boro team around Boston once. How do you go about finding spots? SM: Man...I either just get around somewhere I’ve never been before, or I use Google Maps when I’m bored. I just always try to look for new shit to skate. It’s always sick to find something new. LA: Why is most of your footage night footage? SM: That is when I usually get to do most of my skating. Between work and such. It’s better skating at night anyways.

Spring 2015 | Step Dad | 15

LA: So your a Nightcrawler, eh? What is the best part about night skating? SM: The best part about night is that it’s when the least amount of people are around, and when you do run into people - it’s usually drunk people, and that always makes for an intresting time, haha.

LA: You got any video parts coming out soon? Or that just came out? SM: Second Cornerstore Promo just came out. It premiered at Biddy’s. I’ve also been working on a part with my buddy Tommy from Jersey for his video. Also with Sam McCormick so we’ll see what happens.

LA: So what would I see on your Snapchat story if I checked it right now? SM: Probably driving through snow, my cats, or my girlfriend wyling out.

LA: Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus? SM: Tswift for sure, Miley is the worst!

LA: What do you do to stay on your board during these shitty months of the year? SM: Dude, this year has been terrible. I’ve just been hitting up the indoor parks like once a week. Recently, I’ve been skating some spots that aren’t completely covered in snow. Once you get going the cold really ain’t that bad.

LA: Alright Shawn you wanna thank any people? SM: Yeah, shout out to Jimmy Lake, Tommy Koehne, Tsav, Sam McCormick, Todd Bridgman, John Cozz and the people who go, the North Shore dudes, my girl Rachel, Nick Rudzinski, Rob Collins, Caleb Kaiser, Cwiz, CN, everyone at Orchard and anyone who skates the city, Step Dad Mag and of course the very blessed Liam Annis.

words & photo’s: michael cirelli Michael Cirelli: What’s your name and where are you from? Jack Morris: My name’s Jack Morris. I’m 19 years old and I live in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. MC: What are your favorite types of spots to skate? JM: I can’t really say I have one favorite skate spot, I’m always down for whatever, really! If I’m with a crew of people it always hypes me up to skate anything thing from a 12 stair to a kicker or even flat ground is good with me! MC: How has living right next to Subliminal skatepark helped influence your skating? JM: Subliminal skatepark is owned by Jason Moelk and has had the biggest influence on my skateboarding because it’s like every little kids dream in New England to live next to an indoor skatepark! I have basically been taken under Jay’s wing and it’s incredible! Without Subliminal I really don’t think I would still be skating or have as much love on skateboarding as I do now. I am 100% blessed to be apart of the Subliminal family which includes (Jason Moelk, Nick Petkauskos, Zack Gentes, Mark Dodd, Adam Riggsby, and Alex Lequillo).

MC: Who is your favorite skater and why? JM: Richard Bonnevie, hands down! Realest dude alive, best style when he’s skating, and funniest person I’ve ever met! Adam Riggsby, Mark Dodd, Nate Keegan, Zack Gentes, Jay Moelk, and Nick Petkauskos are also my favorite skaters because they always hype me up and push me to try new things! MC: What skate videos get you hyped to hit the streets and film? JM: Any footy of Guy Mariano or Marc Johnson always hypes me up. Anything Girl/Chocolate/ Cliché/Lakai will motivate me! MC: Anyone you want to thank or say what’s up too? JM: Big thanks to Jason Moelk, David Ashley, Gabe Clement, Matix Clothing, Nate Keegan, Mark Dodd, Richie, Riggsby, KICKFLIP Nicky P., Zacky G., Jon Lewis, Fred Hein, Cam Dumaine, the FC Crew, and everyone at Subliminal Skatepark for always looking out for me! I hope I didn’t miss anybody! If I did just focus my board next time you see me! And of course thank you Michael Cirelli and Step Dad Mag for making this happen!
