New Programs

Gap Year Porgram: In 2015, we will be piloting a restructured “gap year” program. In this program, there will still be an internship component, but it will be with organizations outside of Akili Dada. In addition, we will be increasing the level of college preparation and placement support for those interested in attending school in the U.S. During college preparation, gap year participants will also volunteer in social change projects in the Nairobi area.

Scholarships: We offer competitive, comprehensive scholarships to academically talented young women from underprivileged backgrounds

Most of our scholarship recipients score A’s and A-­‐‘s in their university qualification exams at the end of high school (KCSE). The record by 2013: 11 (A); 15 (A-­‐); 5 (B)+

Leadership Development

Mentorship: Key components of our program include: pairing our scholars, alumni and fellows with individual mentors; engaging high school alumnae as mentors to current scholars; hosting an annual conference for our scholars, mentors, and other stakeholders; and providing mentor only events Leadership skills building: Our multi-­‐faceted and experiential leadership curriculum trains young women to become agents of social change through opportunities to serve their communities, to learn from peers and more experienced leaders, and to grow through rigorous self-­‐analysis Fellowships: The Innovation in Leadership Program incubates young women’s social change projects to scale and sustainability through financial investment, mentorship and skills based training.

Plans for the coming year • Fundraising goal for 2014 is $1 Million USD. • Redesigning our gap year program and will be opening applications to Kenyan high school graduates who can pay for the program in order to broaden our reach and create a more sustainable program.
