Stephanie Mercado’s works present a new kind of history painting Reminiscent of imagery found in historical European art, she examines and interprets how history is recorded; changing the narrative by introducing new elements such as cheeseburgers, cartoon elements, and figures wearing gold chains. The works are multilayered in content and technique. The narrative is constructed with a visual language that references historical portraiture and pop culture to create images that question the origins and the transformation of the American Dream.
