I think this design will be a great success among Children, Families and the Eldery population of Chinatown. There is a range of new programs as well as new program elements to accomodate Neighborhood events. The design also identifies with user needs for additional seating, preservation of open space, a prominent entrance to Ping TOm Park and additional parking to accomodate park and event users.

Another thing that I felt was important was to accomodate the elderly. the elderly are fond of people watching, so I thought that attracting families with children would serve that purpose. I did this through the incorporation of water elements and an array of seating options. Children are especially fond of water features and parents and people-watchers would need a place to sit. They can choose from benches, wall seating or lawn on the mini hills.

I felt it was very important to incorporate cultural elements in the park, as well. The five pavillions are of Chinese Architecture. The benches and pavillion are red, a color that is favored by the Chinese culture. The 18th Street Entrance has cultural chinese sculptures.

The Design concept is inspired by the Chinese CUlture and the Feng Shui theory of balance. The design includes a balance of controlled spaces and open spaces. There are four elements represented and incorporated in the design- Earth, Fire, Water and wind. Earth is incorporated by boulders and vegetative plantings. Water is represented through the incorporation of water features. Fire is represented through the color red located throughout the space. Wind is incorporated through the incorporation of prairie grss. There is also a vegetative wall running through the middle of the site that represents the dragon element in the space. Even the Layout is a series of Yin and Yang symbols.
