Let’s get dressed!

HELLO! Sometimes it is complicated to dress up. For instance, when it’s cold outside and we have to put on tights, jumpers and big coats. Put it can also be really fun! Follow me through this issue, I will show you how I was able to choose my own outfit on the day of the class photo shooting, tell you the story of an Irish wool sweater, and even invite you to a gym session in pajamas. There will also be hats flying away, coat stand shenanigans, and a Carnival mishmash game. Did I mention I love to disguise myself? How about you?

INSIDE GRAOU’S CLOSET Today, I decided to dress up on my own! What’s more, this afternoon is the class photo shooting, and I want to look my very best. But what will I choose to wear?

Maybe blue overalls with my pretty green shirt? Or maybe my brown pants and my sweater with a plane on it? Let’s see…

Either way, I’ll not be wearing this tee-shirt, I’ll be too cold. Even less this sweater, it’s itchy and stingy and its sleeves are too short. All right, let’s start with the socks!

PLAY! Text: Anne-Bénédicte Schwebel Illustration: Gwé

What garment do you think Graou should start with?

So, for the top, why wouldn’t I wear the alien tee-shirt Daddy brought me? I think it is really my favorite. It is so soft!

Come on, come on… There! I think it’ll be perfect! It wasn’t that hard.

PLAY ! Ah, I think it is this one, in the middle of the pile! It is still a bit large, but never mind… What if I wore two sweaters underneath?

Find these four socks in Graou’s mess.

Mommy often says it is better to choose clothes that pair well. But I think it is very good to be a little more original. What if I tried my large-striped pants?

Maybe they are drying in the bathroom?

And boom! Oh no, they are stained. Quickly, another idea. The shorts I got last holiday would be great. But where are they?

PLAY! Draw a sun on all white clothes.

“Graou, are you ready?” Mommy asks. ”Come and eat breakfast…” ”I am there, Mommy, I dressed up all by myself!” “Oh… Yes… I can tell… But have you not forgotten something?”

PLAY! What pair of shoes do you think Graou will choose? What about you, which is you favorite pair?

TOM’S SWEATER

written and illustrated by Liuna Virardi

I remember the soft breeze caressing my woolen threads while Polly worked. ”Tick, tick, tick” her knitting needles went; “tick tick tick” since morning early. That is when it hit me: I was going to be… A sweater!

Polly told me the had knitted me with four balls of the most beautifully colored Irish wool, and that I was going to be the prettiest and warmest sweater in all of Ireland.

I was born on a beautiful summer’s day in the sweet country we call Ireland. I remember the sun shining high in the sky, and a flock of white sheep like little clouds, grazing amongst little flowers.

When she was finished, she unfolded me to have a better look at me and said: “What a wonderful jumper!”

Polly said she was very happy for us, but she loved us so much that she did not want us to go. We immediately gave her a hug. “But Polly, we’ll come back!”

That night, I met tom, Polly’s husband. He was a sailor and he was leaving the following day to discover the distant oceans. He liked his job but he was a little worried, because I was going to spend all winter at sea, and the seas of the world can get very cold! So, Polly smiled. Then she asked me: “Would you like to go with Tom? That way you could keep him warm!” “I wouldn’t mind”, I said. “But I’m a little bit itchy…” ”That’s OK”, said Tom. “My skin is tough from all that sailing!” Tom tried me on and said: “What a wonderful jumper!” I was very happy to, because we were going to see the oceans!

We left early the next morning aboard Tom’s old ship. I must have looked worried, because Tom laughed and said: “It’s the safest boat in Ireland! Don’t worry my friend! Are you ready?” Then he shout at the horizon: “Onwards, let’s go!” And little by little, the boat moved away from land…

Days went by, then weeks. Sometimes Tom held me in his arms and smelled me intensely. He said I carried the smell of home, and Polly’s sweet perfume. Then winter came, and one day a storm broke out! The wind blew so hard that the boat started to swirl like a top and Tom fell on the deck. We were drenched, I was cold and afraid, but I tried my best to keep Tom warm with my good Irish wool. The storm finally passed, and little by little, Tom opened his eyes and got on his feet. He was fine! Me, on the other hand… We discovered that during the storm, I had torn a big hole in me! Oh, no!

Suddenly, we were sartled by a huge white whale that looked at us, surprised. “Guys, is everything all right? You look concerned.” “This is awful, whale! We don’t have any wool to patch this big hole, and winter is here.” “Follow me!” She said. “I know the way to a country where there are many sheep, who will help you for sure!”

What was our surprise when we understood that this country was… Our pretty Ireland! And how happy we were to see Polly again, and discover little Billy in her arms, their baby! He was born whole his daddy Tom and I were sailing the seas! That is when Tom took me off, kissed me and put me on his little boy. What new adventures await, little Billy?
