THE HOTEL POROSSO
A SAN JOSE URBAN RETREAT Situated in downtown San Jose, California business people come to “rest their bones” in an upscale urban hotel. The Hotel “by bone,” by student designers Deanna Molkenbuhr and Stephanie Murri, is constructed purely from the inspiration picture of a microscopic image of bone. Using the ideas of porosity and structure, we’ve created a space for people to enjoy their stay.
that is later warped across the wall. These tiles were molded, glazed, printed, and fired. Using 3D modeling (Thick) we created a vase as a merchandise item for the hotel. Holes similar to our inspiration photo were replicated onto the vase. We 3D printed the vase in nylon. The shape of this vase was later used in other items throughout the hotel at different scales, such as pendant lighting or tables.
In downtown San Jose, the streets are bustling with nightlife. On this block, there is little daytime traffic with the exception of the residential apartments next door. However, there are several bars in the area making the area come to life at night, such as Single Barrel, next door, and Motif, around the corner. The South First Area (SoFA) serves as downtown San Jose’s visual arts and entertainment district. Cool, organic and creative, SoFA is a place where one can interact with some of the most eclectic and artistic people in the city. There are several art installations and museums to visit downtown. Aside from the artistic community, there is a practical business culture that is drawn to this area. Several corporations hold conventions at the nearby San Jose Convention Center. Many hotels in this area cater to these business people. This neighborhood attracts many different types of people. There is a constant flow of international people into the area because of the nearby San Jose International Airport, which is a 10 minute drive to this site. Guests are also convenienced by the parking resources across the street and many other parking lots downtown.
Our Bone Wall façade is created by bridging holes between two layers. Originally, this curtain wall was created with glass blocks that varied in three different materials with varying opacity and different number of holes in the four different glass modules we created. When scaling the curtain wall to the entire building, it was necessary to scale the holes to pertain to each room’s usage. At each room there is a large hole for a balcony that allows guests to walk into the opening which is transparent so the user can experience this interaction between layers. Same idea applies for the entrance into the lobby. All the other holes are placed and sized to meet light and viewing needs of the rooms.
“Thin, Thicker, Thick” is an exploratory materials study using three different mediums to convey an overall theme. Here, we studied a microscopic view of bone to discover what it said about the porous structure of our bones and how to express that in different mediums. To design wallpaper (Thin), we found our inspiration picture of bone and altered it in Illustrator. Using colors we can emulate the depth that the bone-pores show in the black-and-white photo. Using the ceramics lab’s new ceramic printer we have printed designs similar to our wallpaper with a nonstandard tessellation of a bone-like tile (Thicker)
Many objects throughout the hotel take on a blob-like form including the shape of the pool, furniture, stairs, some walls and storage. These all are very rounded to make everything seem bloblike. Our spiral staircase is oblong and undulating and encased with our original glass blocks from our facade which are stretched to the ceiling of each floor to allow an interaction with the porous space while traveling to different floors. These blobs are shown either 3 dimensionally or in plan or section depending on how the user is to experience the object in space.
