Project Project

PROFESSOR SAN FRATELLO. FALL 2013 “for the bone”

This project is an urban boutique hotel in downtown San Jose for business people and travelers that seek the surrounding nightlife and nearby conference centers. The hotel “for the bone” is constructed purely from the inspiration picture of a microscopic image of bone. Using the ideas of porosity and structure, we’ve created a space for people to enjoy their stay.

facade

Our Bone Wall façade is created by bridging holes between two layers.

When studying a microscopic view of bone, we wanted to replicated the porosity and structure of bone, like the image, to create a curtain wall that later became the entire facade to our building. This curtain wall has 4 different “blocks” with a different structure of pores and 3 different Modules and Placement Method translucent, semi-translucent, and opaque materials. These allowed for us to account to the use of views and light needed for the building.

Elevation When Drawing scaling the curtain

wall to the entire building, it was necessary to scale the holes to pertain to each room’s usage.

At each room there is a large hole for a balcony that allows guests to walk into the opening which is transparent so the user can experience this interaction between layers.

Same idea is applied for the entrance into the lobby. All the other holes are placed and sized to meet light and viewing needs of the rooms.

material studies of different mediums While experimenting with porosity and structure and bone in our hotel, we also created some of the materials used in our hotel. Wallpaper was given the appearance of depth through use of color. Tile was warped to be irregular when tessellated with a similar design printed on them. Merchandise was given a round, but light and porous structure to it to replicate the inspirational picture we used for our hotel.

Hermitage

Project

(noun): secluded place of habitation I have provided a hermitage for students to relax or study in the Student Union at San Jose State University where students often search for a place to relax and work in-between classes. Using a position similar in proportion to Le Corbusier’s L4 chaise lounge, I have created a dwelling that students can place themselves in at least four different subtractive positions: Leaning, lounging, standing at the study bar, or sitting in cubicle-like areas.
