ROOM TO READ A BOOK Studio Site
Order and Tectonics, Professor Karl Wallick Southwest Ohio
As a starting point for exploring architectural form, the Room to Read a Book served as an investigation of Semper’s basic tectonic concepts of mass, frame, plane, and hearth. Inspiration was drawn from the underlying mathematical forms of nature, including the Fibonacci spiral and catenary curve.

FIRE STATION Studio Site
Order and Tectonics, Professor Karl Wallick Southwest Ohio
Building on the tectonic language of Room to Read a Book, the main fire station for a rural county is designed to house two fire companies. Built-up wide flange arches provide the main structure for steel SIPS panels. The form spirals from the most public spaces (common room) to the most private (dormitories).

URBAN NATURE CENTER Studio Site
The Civic Realm, Professor Michael Zaretsky Inwood Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
Inwood Park is a partially wooded site located near the University of Cincinnati in a residential neighborhood consisting predominately of poor African-American families. The Nature Center is intended to provide a safe public gathering space for the community while educating the public about the natural world. Due to unstable soil structure, many areas of Cincinnati are prone to landslides. The Nature Center serves as a retaining wall to stabilize the slope and prevent future soil erosion and landslides.

WELLNESS SPA Studio Site
Structure Environment & Construction, Professor Terry Boling Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
The Wellness Spa is located on the northern side of the Cranbrook Academy campus, running in a long bar adjacent to the woods. This site was particularly challenging due to constraints in the size of the lot and high pedestrian traffic. Careful consideration had to be given to issues of privacy. As a sensuous, meditative place, the Spa required a careful balance between natural lighting and a strong sense of enclosure. Conceptually the building is driven by two factors: a cavelike form and brick as a modular unit. Much like water carves through rock, the circulation carves through the building. The “opaque spaces then become the program. Materially the Spa relies on boardformed concrete as mass to weight the building into the earth.

CLIFTON TOWNE CENTER Office Site
Reztark Design Studio Clifton, New Jersey
The project is the third phase in the design and completion of a lifestyle center. The 20,000 SQFT building is designed to encourage visitors to spend the day shopping, playing in the fountains, and eating in the courtyards under the large shady trees. Responsibilities in the design development and construction document phases of the project included redlining plans, sections, elevations, and schedules; drawing plan details; and setting up pages for construction documents.

VICTORY HEADQUARTERS Office Site
Reztark Design Studio Columbus, Georgia
This project is the new base of operations for a growing real estate company in Georgia. It consists of two distinct buildings (to house the two distinct departments of the company) connected by a lobby. The buildings were conceived as one unified building that had split open, rotating about the grand stair in the lobby, which acts as the pivot point. The “split walls are delicately glazed, while the outer walls are opaque with punched openings. Responsibilities in the schematic design phase of the project included drawing floor plans and elevations based on sketches and information included in the program. Presentation elevations and site plan were rendered in Photoshop from linework drawn in AutoCAD.

COHOUSING APARTMENTS Office Site
Todd Jersey Architecture Pittsburg, California
This self-supportive, high-density building features communally owned amenities, including child care, rooftop greenhouses, a commercial kitchen, community dining facilities, art room, music studio, and transportation. Small apartment units free up valuable square footage for these expanded community amenities in a tight urban site. Work spaces in the same complex create a true livework lifestyle. Responsibilities included creating a Revit model of the building based on sketches by the Principal and construction information from the contractor. Presentation boards were then presented to the city of Pittsburg for a funding proposal.

LAWRENCEBURG LOGO Project Site
City of Lawrenceburg Rebranding Lawrenceburg, Indiana
A new logo design was part of a commissioned re-branding project for the city of Lawrenceburg. The city sought to draw visitors from nearby Cincinnati by demonstrating its unique blend of quiet, small-town charm and many entertainment opportunities, including a large casino. PARK REBRANDING Project Site
Miami Whitewater Forest Rebranding Hamilton County, Ohio
Hamilton County Parks commissioned a project to create a stronger brand identity. Currently, Miami Whitewater lacks a consistent signage system that would help unify the park and provide wayfinding for visitors. None of the multiple entrances are delineated, and additional signage is needed at major turning points to help people navigate their way into and around the park. Within the park it is difficult to find activities because the signs are not noticeable, or they do not exist at all. A brand and logo for the park were designed to create a unified signage system. Simplified, color-coded signs were developed to direct park-goers into and around the park.

DRAWING A drawing can say just as much about the person who drew it as it does about the image being conveyed. What is selected to be in the drawing, what is not, and what is emphasized reveal the thought process that went into the drawing. Each line is a decision. Erased mistakes are still visible on the finished drawing, showing layers and history and time.
