INSPIRATION: FLORAL
hese photos show the inspiration behind my
floral fabric that I have chosen. Floral prints lighten up the dark aesthetic of grunge, and can give the entire look a more sophisticated feel. I have two floral prints, one with an open coverage motif and one with a tight coverage. Floral prints can be used in a variety of ways, from skirts, to shirts, jackets and even as a print on the ever so trendy Dr. Marten boot. Givenchy and Drives van Noten have used florals paired with leather and plaid, which certainly have a grunge feel-‐ yet more grown up. The look is classier than eyeliner from the night before and ripped tights, yet it has the grunge elements we are all so nostalgic about.

INSPIRATION: LACE
T
he nylon black lace fabric I
have chosen for my fabric story will be used as an accent for various pieces including floral skirts as well as the traditional flannel shirts to re vamp the look. The lace provides a girly aesthetic and will balance the darkness of grunge to aid in making the entire look more polished.
OVERVIEW
The theme of my fabric story is “sophisticated grunge” which entails grunge elements such as flannel and leather inspired by the grunge era of the 90s, with added touches of floral and lace, to lighten up the look and provide a more sophisticated feel. My basic fabrics such as the black and dark purple cotton will be used for comfortable basics, which will be long and flowing t-‐shirts and tank tops. As cotton is a favorite amongst consumers, my target market will surely appreciate the soft hand of the garment, and the ease of care. I have a silk fabric, which will be used for garments such as dresses that will drape wonderfully and be extremely chic. Expensive, good quality leather will be used for boots and shoes, as well as skirts and jackets. My flannel fabric will be used for classic flannel shirts, which are a perfect layering staple for the grunge look. The Floral prints made of polyester will be used for skirts, dresses and tops, to lighten up the whole look, and nylon lace will be used as accents on certain floral or flannel pieces to do the same. All fabrics in my line can be worn together, or mix and matched. The line will be sold at a contemporary price point, at a boutique on Queen Street West called Lavish and Squalor. A line with such on trend elements would surely fit with their current customers, who are in their 20s and early 30s, appreciate good quality fabrics and dress on trend.

LEATHER
T
he leather fabric I have
selected can be used for skirts, jackets, pants and boots such as Dr. Martens and ankle boots such as the style of the Cheap Mondays shown on my product page. The dark lips showcased in this collage tie into my collection as they accent a dark aesthetic that the leather will set off, and are reminiscent of the black and dark purple fabrics I have chosen for more basic pieces like t-‐shirts, tank-‐tops and dresses.

INSPIRATION: HOMAGE TO 90S GRUNGE
he 90s were characterized by a pendulum swing in which
power dressing in the 80s fell off and dressing casual was the new norm. The look was all about being un-‐done. Hair messy, makeup smudged; a general disregard for being put together. Flannel was a statement piece, and leather coats, ripped jeans, and band t’s clad the trendsetters, and everyone else alike. The 90s are my main inspiration behind my sophisticated grunge fabric story, but of course, with an older market and a new time comes new refined tastes-‐ so the aesthetic of this line will have basic elements of grunge, but with a little more “grown up” feel.
T
ARGET CUSTOMER/LIFESTYLE he target market for my sophisticated
grunge theme is working women in their 20s and early 30s who are trend savvy & can afford contemporary prices. As the line will be sold in Toronto at the boutique Lavish and Squalor, the heavier fabrics such as flannel and leather are perfect layering pieces for the colder climate, which we will be soon faced with. These women appreciate good quality fabrics and like staying on trend from season to season. These women also lived through the grunge era in the 90s and are feeling nostalgic with its revival but are gravitating towards more refined pieces than just complete carelessness that was the 90s.
