WASHING YOUR FACE 101
S
tarting your day with a fresh face begins with your morning ritual. The importance of removing the buildup of excess sebum and overnight products containing ingredients such as Retinols and AHA creams will require an effective cleaning routine that will make certain your products work as intended. First, let’s determine what type of cleanser is required for your skin type. If you are unsure of your skin type consult with an Esthetician or Dermatologist. Second, always wash your hands before cleansing your face! When choosing a cleanser you should consider your skin’s pH(potential hydrogen)the natural pH of the skin is somewhat acidic at 5.5. Your skin produces both sebum and sweat to create a barrier known as the acid mantle, the acid mantle is a protective barrier against certain forms of micro-organisms and bacteria. When 6

the skin is exposed to extremes in the pH, dryness, dehydration, inflammation and even bacteria can grow especially if the product you’re using is incorrect. So, it is important to find a product line that works for your skin type. Let’s get started with your skin type and choosing the right product. Our product recommendations are based on client and personal usage. If it has been determined that your skin is NORMAL or WELL BALANCED..we prefer a vitamin C skincare line such as SAUDA NATURALS VITAMIN C SKINCARE to maintain and protect the skin, vitamin C is your skin’s barrier. If you suffer from DRY SKIN (reduce your water temperature to lukewarm or near cool) We love STACKED SKINCARE HYDRATING GEL SULFATE FREE FACIAL WASH. For OILY SKIN we’re going with DERMALOGICA OILY SKIN KIT which contains a Dermal Clay Cleanser. We also love
SAUDA NATURALS ADVANCED AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser with Hibiscus. For COMBINATION SKIN we absolutely love the results from TATCHA THE STARTER RITUAL SET Simple, Pure and Elegant. If you have been diagnosed with ROSACEA or SENSITIVE SKIN we found Aveeno Ultra Calming Foaming Cleanser a winner. So now that you have your cleanser on deck, let’s discuss the proper washing technique. We suggest you wash twice daily, removing all makeup. Wet your face with lukewarm water and using your fingertips to apply a dime size amount of cleanser in an upward circular motion. To avoid any irritations we suggest you use your fingertips or a soft bristle brush. Rinse well, using a clean soft towel, pat your face dry. Do not rub or pull the towel down your face. Allow your face to dry before applying the next product. If your product is medicated most dermatologist suggest waiting at least 10 minutes before applying due to the possibility of irritation. Our take on TONERS is old school tried and true DICKINSON’S WITCH HAZEL. We also love SAUDA NATURALS ROSEWATER HYDRA MIST and SAUDA NATURALS VITAMIN C ALL IN ONE TONER with COLLOIDAL SILVER. For SENSITIVE SKIN we religiously use KIEHL’S CALENDULA HERBAL EXTRACT ALCOHOL FREE TONER. SERUMS are concentrated ingredients formulated to treat certain skin conditions. Serums should be applied before your moisturizer. Serums come in the form of ampoules which are perfect if you are always on the go. We love the vitamin C serums with hyaluronic acid and 25% vitamin C. Make sure your serum comes in a dark or amber colored bottle. The dark packaging protects the serum from breaking down when exposed to light. Keeping your serums in a cool dark area is essential to its effectiveness. Do not store in your bathroom due to humidity and oxidation. MOISTURIZERS are a requirement and depending on the formula, moisturizers seal in moisture and protect the barrier layer of the skin. They also hydrate and balance the oil and water moisture content of the skin. Products that contain performance ingredients such as vitamin C and hyaluronic acid will be even more effective. I love Creme de la Mer and SAUDA NATURALS MARINE COMPLEX HYDRATION CREME.

YOUR WAY CLEARLY
Vitamin C also called Ascorbic Acid is a requirement for the growth and re-
pair of your body tissues. It’s ability to co-partner in the effort to form Collagen is what makes vitamin C an essential vitamin. Your body does not manufacture or store collagen, vitamin C is a daily requirement since it is needed for collagen synthesis. Collagen is the glue that holds your skin together! Believe it or not, you start the aging process around age 20, which is when your collagen production begins to decrease. By age 30 your collagen production levels begin to decline at approximately 2% annually. Daily intake of at least 1800-2400mg of vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis, since your body cannot manufacture or store collagen. Applied topically, vitamin C will improve the damaging effects of the sun. Exposure to the sun, smoking cigarettes and UV lights have a diverse effect on your levels of vitamin C, due to the fact that all of the above mention bad habits actually deplete your vitamin C content. While vitamin C will protect you from UV light exposure which also decreases your vitamin C content, however it should not replace your sunscreen. The latest and greatest news on vitamin C are the new Serums on the market and the vast array of vitamin C creams with varying degrees of concentration. It is widely recommended that a 20% vitamin C product will allow the maximal absorption. A 12 week daily use of a reliable vitamin C product with at least a 20% concentration rate has been shown to decrease wrinkles and skin roughness. Vitamin C is one of the few vitamins besides Vitamin E that can be taken internally and applied externally. Vitamin C is a proven and effective antioxidant that plays a crucial role in protecting the skin from free radicals and the treatment of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

HYDRATE
T
here is nothing more amazing than the power of water. It is a healer and a messenger. Your heart contains 73% water and the lungs about 83% water and overall the body contains approximately 60% water. The skin contains 64% and that’s what we are going to discuss, how importnat it is to stay hydrated. Hydrating means the replenisment of moisture or water to skin cells. Drinking water gives you a radiant glow and a youthful healthy complexion. Lack of water will introduce itself through flaky dry rough skin. It is important to hydrate the skin externally by applying moisture or water to skin cells. There are several ways to add moisture to your skin by using oils such as coconut oil or grapeseed oil which is excellent for wrinkles. Also try making a mask with Rosewater and Glycerin. Socks and Vaseline can be a wonderful treat for your feet. My favorite hydration tool is the EVIAN BRUMISATEUR FACIAL SPRAY when used daily it hydrates your skin, help fix your makeup, freshens and purifies your skin. If you are a frequent flyer this item should be in your purse. Made from natural mineral water it has moisturizing and toning properties. Hydration is a key component to treating acne and preventing acne scars. Staying hydrated
is essential for healthy skin, treating acne early and keeping it under control is also necessary to prevent acne scars. Water accelerate the skin’s natural rejuvenation process, it also aids in the detoxification process by flushing out toxins. Dry skin is also a contributing factor to acne because it triggers excess oil production which is a contributing factor to acne as well. Keeping skin cells hydrated will also help to get rid of dead skin and fight bacteria. So be sure to get adequate amounts of water daily. Since, we are on the subject of acne scars and hydration there is an ancient oil that is excellent for treating acne scars and that is Frankincense! Tea tree oil is another one that is widely used for the treatment of acne scars. Baking soda made into a paste an applied as a mask will help shed the skin, making it smoother. I would do a skin test before applying a full application, baking soda can irritate and cause redness. Treating acne early coud prevent scars. Please do not pick at your acne, this will definitely lead to scars and discoloration. For severe acne we recommend you seek professional help.

Take that stack of magazines and
pull out your favorite look. Now step into your closet and see what can be revamped, recycled and reused to create that desired look without breaking the bank. In today’s fashion news the trending topic is sustainability and waste. The industry is now promoting eco-friendly and ethical clothing, recycling and reuse. Over 15 tons of waste is generated in America every year according to The Balance. The textile recyling industry is represented by SMART and according to statistics 16 million tons of textile waste is produced annually. While faced with a significant challenge, the overall objective is to move towards a zero landfill society. You have a choice in what footprint you leave on earth and save money at the same time. You will also create a one of a kind design, and who knows you just might stumble upon a new career. Wearing something that you created is always rewarding. Check out my favorite...Rush Our Fashion on YouTube. Another way to go instead of purchasing something new is renting clothes. Rent The Runway is the only one I am personally familiar with and I must say I was impressed with the cost and quality. Rent the Runway is a subscription fashion service that empowers women to rent unlimited designer styles for everyday and special occasions. The only drawback to renting is you damage it’s yours for the value of the dress. One of my favorite ways to create my own designs is to crochet, I especially

love crocheting looks from the 70’s. Jumpsuits, maxi dresses and bikini’s to name a few and don’t forget about the vest over a pair of your favorite jeans. Knitting is another way to eliminate waste and create your own designs...sew in a private label and a business is born. Everyone loves a big bold colorful knitted sweater over jeans, my favorite are the ones with the neck that doubles as a hoodie. All these activities are also great for relaxing and relieving stress. Don’t forget to donate your gently used items to centers that help the homeless. Old T-shirts can be used as rags. Have you ever tried revamping a pair of your favorite shoes? why not, especially if they are comfortable, just take them to a repair shop to see if they can be saved before throwing away. We can reduce our Fashion Environmental Impact by buying less, recyling and renting!

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest healing systems. It originated in India and is considered to be the Science of Health and Wellness. It is the philosophy of balance in life. THE SEEDS
Y
ou might be surprised to know that SUNFLOWER seeds are actually not seeds but, because it is grown from a flower, technically speaking it is a fruit. Sunflower seeds are rich in healthy fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Incorporating sunflower seeds to your diet is a win win due to the fact that they boost your intake of nutrients and they’re rich in Selenium which is required from an outside source since your body cannot manufacture it. Selenium is needed to combat chronic disease. Sunflower seeds are also loaded with vitamin B, containing at least seven of the eight essential B vitamins. I personally add them to my salads as they can now be found in most salad bars. Try to use organic when possible. Next up is my favorite the FLAX seed which I use personally for hair growth and smooth skin. Flax seeds are loaded with Omega-3s. Try a flax seed facial twice a week and consume it daily in some form or fashion such as breakfast muffins, flax seed buns or you can make a seed mix for a salad topping. The PUMPKIN seeds and its oil is valued for its moisture retaining benefits and zinc which is a requirement for great skin. This seed also contains vitamin E and Omega-3s. It helps fight free radicals which comes from cigarette smoking, air pollution and working in an industrial enviroment like factories that create and manufacture products such as food, beverage and tobacco, textiles, leather apparel and electronics. CHIA SEED is known for its anti inflammatory benifits and its ability to calm and heal ACNE. Try adding them to smoothies and oatmeal.

hile makeup is used worlwide. I found that some women are using less and some are using makeup as a display of self expression by being creative and artistic in ways that we will call them the “Non-Coformists” who use adornments to express their individuality and creativity with different styles of dress, jewelry, makeup and accessories. Use jewelry that make you feel good about yourself when you put it on. Some of us use jewelry to express our mood. On a drab day grab a few brightly colored bangles and rose colored glasses to brighten the day and lift your spirits. Africa and India lead the world in jewelry adornment with wrist to shoulder bracelets and several pair of earrings encrusted with gems, jewels and gold. In Africa its beads and shells
in many bright colors formed into pure organic art pieces. I absolutely love wearing art to express my individuality. I love items with intiguing designs and bright bold colors like LAPIS and TURQUOISE. You can also express yourself with makeup, while in school I entered the makeup contest and the concept was makeup from different countries, I selected Africa and won second place for a tribal look. I must admit that the tribal look is my favorite, because with the right hairstyle or hair adornment you can achieve that WOW factor. In Africa tribal makeup is applied for several reasons. Each color and each symbol has a certain meaning. Take RED for instance it represents energy, urgency and danger. WHITE represents purity, confidence and affection. BLUE refers to peace, calmness and confidence. We celebrate our ancestors when we wear our tribal makeup which is now an international trend. MEHRON makeup top our list for all your tribal makeup and tools and for everyday colorful creations we love the colors offered by THE CRAYON CASE. This year represent your tribe!

GIFTS FROM EARTH
Around 2500 b.c the Chinese physicians used gold to treat skin ulcers and in post surgical procedures after discovering that Gold is an antioxidant and that it has anti-inflammatory properties. Gold can calm acne inflammation, reduce skin redness, protect against free radicals, reduce skin wrinkles and sun damage. Gold was first used in skincare by Queen Cleopatra who reigned in 1st century B.C, she is believed to have made and used gold masks on her face and body. We’re going to discuss using colloidal gold and it’s skin illuminating properties. It is my hope that you find this article helpful as I try to address any questions that you may have. IS COLLOIDAL GOLD GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN? Colloidal Gold are fine particles of gold suspended in liquid which allows its properties to penetrate deeper into the skin making it a great ingredient to add to any skincare regimen. When metallic gold is divided into fine particles with sizes ranging from one to one hundred billionths of a meter, the particles are permanently suspended in a liquid solution (it becomes colloidal) and exhibits completely new properties due to the large amount of gold surface area available. Colloidal Gold Facial Masks are the least expensive way to give this highly coveted beauty product a try. We found after using colloidal gold on acne prone skin due to its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to combat infections, it was speeding up the healing process and the results were amazing! We also found it to be a great remedy to reverse sun damage and there was a noticeable difference in skin wrinkles.
Listed below are the five benefits of using a Gold Mask… 1. Increase in Elastin which helps with wrinkles 2. Kills Acne Bacteria 3. Lightens the Complexion 4. Restores and Rejuvenate 5. Anti-inflammatory Properties
There are two favorites on the market that we tried with no adverse effects! Peter Thomas Roth 24k Gold Mask This lavish, pampering treatment helps to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a youthful-looking complexion. Caffeine helps tighten and firm the look of skin while peridot, an exquisite gemstone rich in magnesium re-energizes and helps reduce the aging effects of stress. The 24K gold imparts an opulent, radiant glow and locks in moisture for ultra-hydrated skin. OROGOLD Cosmetics/24K Deep Tissue Rejuvenation Mask & Collagen Eye Renewal Mask The 24K Deep Tissue Rejuvenation Mask & Collagen Renewal Mask is a boxed set of one-time use face and eye masks made with golden hydrophilic gel. Expertly formulated with gold, lavender, and collagen, this mask leaves you feeling relaxed and calm. Enjoy a softer, smoother complexion with each monthly application. Always consult with a professional before trying any new product and with everything in life use in moderation! S AU DA M AG A Z I N E |

Her name was Sarah Breedlove... C.J. Walker was her husband name and while she was the first black entreper-
neuer to make a million dollars she was definetly not the first black female entreperneuer. Our great grandmothers were the first black female entreperneurs selling cakes, pies, honey drippers and plates (they call them meal prep today). All out of necessity and for that reason we are still carving our path to entreperneurship. Treated poorly in the workplace, underpaid and undervalued as well as a lack of respect has led women of color to take charge of their earnings after coming to the realization that they can work just as hard at developing their own companies. As of 2020, approximately 6 million women of color stepped out on purpose driven faith. Faith in themselves with the firm belief that they too could do this. Six million women of color and we generate 400 billion in revenue and hire approximately 3 million people, which is why I can’t stress it enough...Please, please support black owned business. So whatever you do, turn your passion and your gift into profits. You can get fired from a job, but you can’t get fired from your gift. Who would argue with getting paid to do something that you love to do. Start small and work your way up... dont be afraid to ask questions. Read books, take classes. I actually took a masterclass which had a panel of eight female entreperneurs that had products already in stores. You should become an expert on your gift or product. You must have a business plan and you must be able to answer the question..What makes your product so special?. I took an advertising and marketing class at our local college, out of necessity, in the beginning this will be your biggest expense. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your SBA, they are actually waiting for you! Know your demographics and your target audience including age. Make sacrafices and start building capital( while still employed). Discipline is key to staying motivated and on track. Identify your purpose and don’t share your ideas with family or friends.. you must move in silence. Secure the name of your business and the concept by registering your company and completeing all the legal work including securing your domain names. Your Logo is next, once selected this too shoud be registered and copyrighted. (look up poor man’s copyright). Pay close attention to your thoughts, sometimes ideas and vision will manifest through your dreams. Either you are a fish in the ocean or a shark in the ocean.. what’s your calling, identify your purpose and follow your dream!

HAIR CHRONICLES

ince the beginning of time, hair has been a major indicator of a person’s social and even economic status. Men and women of all walks of life use their hair to represent who they are. Some grow it long and others simply shave it off. Some people wear their hair in a natural state while others prefer to use chemicals or temporary products and tools to alter what grows naturally. The importance of hair in today’s society is more evident than ever. Just take a look around. Every chain retailer no matter the demographics, has at least one full isle dedicated to hair products for women, men, men and children. Although, the sale of hair care products isn’t new there’s a trend

in product sales that has only appeared in major chains within the last 10 years. For the first time ever there is a mass availabilty of products specifically created and marketed to people of color with naturally curly hair. Not only are women of color ditching relaxers AKA “creamy crack” she has also indulged in the wide world of artificial color while enjoying the ability to switch it up to sport her share of braids, wigs and other extensions. For many it was the first time they were introduced to their own curls! However, the YouTube videos and Pintrest post that we all have fallen in love with still leaves most women in a whirlwind when it comes to this one thing... BREAKAGE! Although hair is

simple in makeup, keeping it healthy is not so simple and can be one of the most complex and frustrating thing a Naturalista may deal with. Until recently there wasn’t much information on how to to care for natural hair and so as enticing as going natural sounded, for some the thought of actually doing so is absolutely frightening. Breakage is something that we have all dealt with at some point in our life and it’s no fun. For those with natural curly hair, there can be reasons for breakage that those with straight or even wavy hair may not experience. First, natural hair tends to be dry by nature. This is due to its structure. Think about the difference in time traveling...a winding road versus a straight one. All of the crooks and turns that are present in curly hair makes it more difficult for moisture and protein to be distribut-

Get regular trims. Split ends are inevitable. Trimming the ends before thay have a chance to split helps with prunning hair for maximum growth. Trims should be done by a professional. ed. Second, porosity or the ability of the hair to absorb moisture plays a major part whether the hair is moisturized enough to keep from breaking. The other key player in hair health is protein. Hair is created from a protein called keratin. Keratin is a structural protein that also makes up nails and skin. Keratin’s main function is to adhere cells to each other and provide a covering for new cells. When the outer layer of keratin becomes damaged, this can cause dry brittle hair. There are several other reasons hair begins to break or fall out including certain medicines, stress, change of diet and alopecia to name a few. These conditions are extreme and may need a diagnosis to treat.
Use Minimal heat and a good heat protectant when styling. Too much heat can permanently damged your hair. No amount of conditioners or treatments can reverse this type of damage. Heat damaged can be treated but not repaired. Take vitamin supplements that promote strength and elasticity in the hair. Research shows most people do not get their daily amount of essential vitamins. Many professional products contain keratin mainly from plants that help to strengthen hair bonds or natural ingredients like Aloe Vera that provides moisture to your hair strands.

It’s amazing what can happen to your skin when you start eating a nutritious diet.. Bad diet and bad habits can lead to bad skin. To achieve glowing skin you must start from within. Healthier skin is definitely related to our diets. You should add vegetables and fruit high in vitamin A, C and E. It’s what we like to call the ACE diet. A lack of vitamin A will cause your skin to look dry and rough similar to the flesh on a Goose. Vitamin C is a requirement for collagen formation, hydration and protection from sun damage. Vitamin E is required for healing and protection from free radicals by strengthening the skin‘s barrier function. In one study, researchers found people who ate the most fruits, vegetables and fish had the least amount of wrinkles. However, the researchers found diets high in saturated fat, including meat, butter, and full-fat dairy, as well as soft drinks, cakes, pastries, and potatoes (called “high-glycemic” foods), increased the likelihood of skin wrinkling. Coincidentally, these high-glycemic foods are also implicated in insulin resistance. Try adding superfoods to yor diet for an added boost of healthy nutrition, my favorite is Raw Cacao which is super rich in magnesium and vitamin C. For extra hydration try MSM or Methylsulfonylmethane which is a mineral found naturally in the body and in many foods such as apples, raspberries, whole grains and leafy green vegetables and tomatoes to name a few. Give Royal Jelly a try, it can be consumed and applied topically. Why it’s called royal? my guess woud be because it’s lowers your blood pressure, has an impact on high cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart disease, and at the same time making you beautiful and healthy .

YOUR SKIN ON NUTRITION

LACK BEANS! contain anthocyanin which can be found in high quanities and Isoflavones, both posess anti-aging properties. Avocados rich in vitamin C and E both support healthy skin and offer protection from free radicals, containing zeaxanthin which helps to keep your skin taut and preventing wrinkles. Purple Cabbage is loaded with nutrients for your skin it has a higher level of anthocyanins which besides benefitting the skin, it also lowers the risk of heart disease and cancer. Red Bell Peppers are rich in carotenoids that aid in the prevention of wrinkles and this veggie is considered an acne fighter. Arugula leaves will help protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Arugula also improves skin’s elasticity. Now put all that together under a flax seed bun and that is what we call EATING PRETTY ! CHECK OUT THESE OTHER BEAUTY BUILDERS! Why not give Amla Juice a try also known as gooseberries. The essential minnerals and vitamins found in Amla juice is a needed addition to any diet. An excellent source of vitamin C and Collagen and yes it slows down the aging process with its polyphenols. Amla juice cleans and detoxify your system, it aids in digestion, helps maintain clear skin, healthy hair and good eyesight. Aloe Vera Juice... Heal to Beautify...Beautify to Heal! That’s exactly what this desert queen does. She is always in a constant state of survival while residing in the harshest climates. She is one of the most nutrient rich plants offering over 200 phytonutrients and minerals. It too can be taken internally and applied topically. The inner leaf of the Aloe Vera plant is made up of 99 percent water which can deliver supreme hydration. We suggest purchasing a live plant from you local nursery. Next is my favorite the Sweet Potatoe, it’s my go to for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. This baby contains Beta-Carotene and the stuff that protects your skin from the sun by acting as a natural sunblock. Loaded with viatamin A, it works wonders for dry wrinkled skin and guess what this one is also easy to grow!. Next is Miss Understood! SOY is your friend and for some reason it is getting a bad rap. The decrease in collagen and elastin, is a natural, inevitable process of aging. However research has shown that soy foods can slow down the aging process! Edamame, tofu and soy milk contain isoflavones which are antioxidants that protect the skin and prevent wrinkles. Give it a try!

reat yourself as if you are your best friend and start loving on you. Take your new bestfriend to lunch and a movie, stop and buy yourself a bouquet of flowers. Why not drop in and check out your local Choclatier and taste what’s new, buy a box of decadent desserts..my favorite are truffles. How about a slew of scented candles. I absolutely love Voluspa Candles and Home Scents. Drop a bomb and wash the day away. Try to make this a ritual , especially when your feeling a little blue. Exercise also help keep the blues away..start taking a walk when you get home, especially if the sun is shining. One of my favorite places to hangout is Barnes and Noble, add a cup of starbucks and hands down it’s one of the best and cheapest date I’ve ever been on. When is the last time you visited your local Museum or Art Gallery find one and indulge in the Arts, btw I love getting dressed up for these events. I stay ready for an impromptu photo shoot with my phone. Have you ever been on a picnic with yourself ? Pack a basket and give it a go on the beach, just you and the sound of the waves and the smell of the ocean... now that’s total zen in my world.. Sometimes we get lost in our work or caught up in family drama, it’s good to walk away from it all and create a space for some me time. Time to yourself to gather and sort through your thoughts and the demands from others. Sometimes you have to ask yourself what about me. So I implore you to find an activity, hobby or perhaps volunteering is your thing, whatever it is do it. Just like the saying goes “You only live once” .
