INTRODUCTION 3
Welcome to your home for the next five years! You might feel intimidated or nervous right now, but hopefully this book can ease your worries. On the other hand, you might be excited and thrilled! We are too. In this book, you’ll find the basics on where everything is within the school and also within the City of Cambridge. Tips and advice gathered from upper-years are interspersed to help you navigate the world of architecture school. A special thanks to FOC, WASA, Brent Carson, Rick Haldenby and Donna Woolcott for helping to move this project forward. We’re all rooting for you. - Alex Bodkin and Stephanie Koltun
Don’t be afraid to share ideas and seek feedback.

Attending your own crit is obviously mandatory, and it’s a good idea to have someone else take notes for you. However, if you really want to make the most of the day, attend as many crits as you can. This helps you understand what works and what doesn’t in many different areas. If you have the time, attend upper-year crits to get a jump on the game.

MELVILLE CAFE
You’ll spend a fair amount of money here, so get used to it. There’s a student deal every weekday, and you’ll receive a 10% discount if you buy something else off the menu (except beer or wine). M - F 8:30am - 8pm Sat - Sun 8:30pm - 4pm
DESIGN AT RIVERSIDE
As part of the Cambridge Galleries, Design at Riverside brings architecture and design shows into our school. Keep your eyes on the prize and maybe you’ll be featured in the Projects Review show at the end of April. Tues - Thurs 12pm - 8pm Friday 12pm - 5pm Sat - Sun 10am - 5pm
GYM
With your key, you have 24-hour access to treadmills, elipticals, bikes, yoga mats, weight machines and more. Don’t leave your sweat around after you’ve gone - wipe the equipment down with provided supplies. Keep your eye out for classes, tournaments and other events organized by the fitness co-ordinator.
e-CLASSROOM
Here is where you get down to the nitty-gritty bits of architecture. You’ll learn how to model and render, use AutoCad as well as Adobe Suite. It gets warm in here with all those machines running, so dress lightly, even in winter.
7
MAIN LECTURE HALL
You’ll spend many, many, many hours in here. From looking at slides to taking notes to watching movies, this is where it happens. Bring a notebook, bring a pen, but don’t be the person that brings a pillow.
STUDENT LOUNGE
Pass out on an extra-long couch, play a game of ping-ping or foosball, or rattle off a tune on the piano. Relax, forget your woes, and snuggle up with an oversized pillow in the soft-corner.
WORKSHOP
Equipped with any tool you’d need to build a model, the workshop quickly becomes construction-city around deadline time. Important Information If you don’t know how to use something, ask. Stay away if you’re sleep deprived. Wear goggles but don’t forget to take them off when you leave. M-F 9am - 5pm

MUSAGETES ARCHITECTURE LIBRARY
The library is a quiet, calm oasis at the centre of an often stressful school environment. It is a perfect starting point for research and catnaps. Books, journals and movies on anything design-related can be found within. Use the GIS program and find geographic data for the local area and other specific sites. Add money to your WatCard at the circulation desk. Request material from main campus, Laurier and Guelph using TUGdoc. M - F 8:30am - 8:30pm Sat - Sun 1pm - 5pm
THE OFFICE
Here you can pay your studio and fieldtrip fees, ask Donna questions, and pick up your mail and books. There is plenty of info pertaining to events, resources and faculty posted on the bulletin board outside. M - F 8:30am - 4:30pm
ARCHITECTURE COMPUTING AND MEDIA
ACM has lots of products and services. Here, you can buy supplies, get tech support, scan and plot, and sign out equipment like cameras and projectors. M - F 10am - 6pm
PHOTO STUDIO
The studio is equipped with moveable lighting and three colours of backdrops, perfect for documenting models. Important Information: The doors are always locked, so make sure to book ahead of time at ACM. If you don’t have a DSLR, why not grab one from there too.
9
DARKROOM
The darkroom is equipped with 11 enlargers, a print dryer and the necessary chemistry for black and white film and print developing.
VIDEOLAB
There are 9 G5 machines running OS X, 8 of which have miniDV recorders and Final Cut Pro. 1 is equipped with an M-Audio Keystation 49e. A sound booth is in the back.
MAC LAB
Enjoy all your computing needs from rendering to Facebook, on really big screens. 22 iMacs running Mac OS X and Windows. Available programs include Rhino, VRay, Autocad, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and more. Open 24 hours a day. Important Information: If your document doesn’t print right away, wait a bit. And don’t hog two computers the night of a deadline.

STUDIO
You’ll spend most of your time here, even though studio days are technically only Tuesday and Thursday. You’ll either have desk crits, project introductions, project reviews or whatever else the professor arranges. Even though studio is separated by years, don’t be afraid to wander over to the other classes and take a look. The upper-years can be a great resource for design ideas, local hot spots, and good parties. Important Information Although studio is open 24 hours a day, keep the door shut at all hours in order to prevent theft and non-students from walking through here. Only work on your desk. Don’t take other people’s food from the fridge. There are two telephones located between the studios. To dial out, press 6 and then the number you are trying to reach. The number for these lines is 519 888 4567 ext 27644 and ext 27643.
LOFT
This space is for everything: project reviews and critiques, yoga classes, drawing at easels, model-making, the awards banquet, and much more. On the day of reviews, attend everyone’s - not just your own. During your own crit, you will be too busy wiping the sweat off your palms to fully absorb what the critics say. With that said, have someone else take notes for you. You’ll hear it again and again, but crits are where you can learn the most. Important Information Attend all your crits, desk and project reviews. Utilize the large tables and pin up boards for group projects.
11 TERRI’S OFFICE
Not only is Terri one of your professors, she is also your Undergraduate Officer. If you have have academic related issues, she is the person to talk to.

isn’t a badge of honour With effective time management, an all nighter doesn’t have to be a necessity. However, if you’re down to the wire and start seeing the sun coming up, remember to eat and take a break if you feel yourself getting stuck.

22 DESK STRETCHES
While sketching, drafting or sitting at a computer for hours at a time, it’s important to loosen up every once in a while. Stretching keeps the blood flowing and prevents you from feeling sore. You don’t even need to go down to the fitness room to stretch your muscles - just use your chair.

5 Enter the percentage into the photocopier. Repeat if necessary.
4 If the percentage is below 25% or above 400%, use the coloured bars to find a series of percentages that will result in the required percentage.
3 Go across and down to find the required percentage.
2 On the top, find the desired scale.
1 On the left, find the current scale of your image.
Unfortunately the photocopier only accepts percentages between 25% and 400% so englarging or shrinking a drawing can become troublesome. Luckily, this chart does all the calculations so you can put your brain power to developing partis.
