Carnarvon One Mile Jetty Celebrates 120 Years The One Mile Jetty is the longest timber construction in the North West of Western Australia and construction began in 1897. 2017 marks an historical milestone with the jetty celebrating 120 years since construction commenced and 20 years since the Carnarvon Heritage Group rescued the jetty from demolition. Thousands of people have enjoyed the pleasures of walking and fishing from this amazing piece of historical infrastructure. We are calling upon the countless people who love this jetty to support this initiative so that future generations can also experience the wonders of the natural environment out over the Indian Ocean. The Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum celebrates the little known history of the role Carnarvon played in the manned space program and in the Australian communications industry. On 21 July 1969, the day of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Casshorn antenna known as the ‘Sugar Scoop’ which stands beside the OTC Dish relayed Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon from NASA’s Honey Suckle Creek Tracking Station to Perth’s TV audience via Moree earth station - the first live telecast into Western Australia. Later in 1969, the larger 29.6 metre wide steerable antenna was built to facilitate better communication between the NASA Tracking Station and the USA.
Take a step back in time, relive the touching moments and watch the short documentaries of the space communications.
The museum focuses on two parts, the Carnarvon Tracking Station and the OTC Satellite Earth Station, for which each station played separate roles in the early space industry. The Carnarvon Tracking Station (no longer standing) was located 10 kilometres south from Carnarvon. The station was built to support NASA’s Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs. It was commissioned in 1964 and operated for 11 years. It was the last station to communicate with the space

At the height of the operation it had a staff of 220 people. The OTC Satellite Earth Station is now the site for the Space and Technology Museum, located approximately 6km from the town centre. The OTC Satellite Earth Station was opened in 1966. Initially the 12.8 metre wide Casshorn antenna known as the ‘sugar scoop’ was part of the global satellite communications system.

Immerse yourself in local history at the Heritage Park at the base on the One Mile Jetty.
One Mile Jetty
Railway Station Museum
As the pastoral industry developed in Carnarvon in the late 1800s the local population pressured the government of the day to develop a port for the town.
This museum houses the Kimberley Steam Train, which was brought down from Broome in the 1950s. It was the last steam train to operate in the North West.
By 1897 the jetty had been built and wool and livestock produced in the region began to be exported to Fremantle and essential goods for the town imported using state shipping.
Shearing Hall of Fame
In 1904 the head of the jetty was added and in 1912 the jetty head was widened because of increasing traffic, including passengers.
The Heritage Group in collaboration with The Gascoyne Pastoral and Shearing Museum Inc has opened Western Australia’s first Shearing Hall of Fame. Read about gun shearers and big sheds. Learn about the golden days of the Gascoyne shearing industry in the 1950s.
Carnarvon was the first port in Western Australia which loaded livestock on board ships for transport to markets. The One Mile Jetty once boasted an animal race the length of the jetty along which the sheep and cattle were driven from holding yards where the Interpretive Centre is today. The jetty transport system and diesel locomotives on the tramway ceased in 1966 when state ships stopped calling. Road train transport commenced and the jetty began to fall into disrepair until 1998 when the community banded together to save what is the longest jetty in the north of the state. You can walk the jetty, throw in a fishing line or catch the Coffee Pot train.
Lighthouse Keepers Museum This museum is a cottage which was built around the 1900s to house the lighthouse keeper and his family and was used until the 1970s. The building has now been restored and houses memorabilia from bygone days.

One Mile Jetty Interpretive Centre The Interpretive Centre is home to the HMAS Sydney II/ HSK Kormoran Display. This famous Australian battle off the Gascoyne Coast in 1941 is remembered and told in the Centre. You can also view one of the lifeboats in which 46 German survivors came ashore north of Carnarvon.
One Mile Station Café Valentina’s One Mile Station Café overlooking the Indian Ocean at the base of the jetty is where you can enjoy fresh local produce and seafood meals as well as homemade sweets, all with touch of Italy. Valentina and her team welcome you in a family friendly environment to dine with spectacular views. Open various hours throughout the season.

Walk Trails Old Tramway Walk Trail This 2.5km walk trail runs the length of the tramway from the Town Bridge (Fascine Town Beach) to the Heritage Precinct. Trains once travelled from the One Mile Jetty to the goods yard in town, where the Civic Centre Woolshed stands today.
Nature Based Walk Trail For a shorter walk try the 400m trail from the Precinct to the Gascoyne River Mouth with views of the river and the jetty. The Mangrove Boardwalk, as its name suggests, meanders out into the mangroves where one can be at peace with nature and take in another aspect of the One Mile Jetty. This boardwalk has been constructed by students using recycled plastic materials and is an ongoing project.
Photographer Paradise The jetty is the perfect base for sunrise and sunset images, with Carnarvon producing some of the most magnificent sunrises and sunsets in Western Australia. We suggest you pack a picnic and sit on the edge of the One Mile Jetty and capture all the magical moments.
Fishing The One Mile Jetty is a renowned fishing spot; you can catch Mulloway, Tailor, Mackerel, Trevally, Tuna, Snapper, Shark and Bream all year round. The jetty is also a hot spot for Blue Manna Crabs between May and August.
Valentina’s is well known in Carnarvon for its Premium Italian Coffee, fine hand made Italian food and traditional Aussie style meals. The Restaurant and Café is fully licensed and is located at the base of the One Mile Jetty. Enjoy fresh local seafood, home made pasta, sweets and Italian Gelato. Gascoyne Food Festival Thursday 17 - Saturday 19 August 2017
Food Bowl of WA Carnarvon’s lush horticultural region is where the abundance of tropical fruits, succulent seafood and array of fruits and vegetables is grown. Produce availability in Carnarvon is defined by the seasons. Between May and October the region produces an abundant array of fresh fruits and vegetables, and outside of these months a small variety of produce is grown. Seafood is available from March to November. Annual weather aberrations such as cyclones, floods, heavy rain to drought may also have an effect on dates of fresh produce availability.
Famous for Bananas Did you know that Carnarvon was the first place in Australia where bananas were grown? Now Carnarvon is recognised as the place where the tastiest and sweetest bananas are grown. Sweeter Banana is the brand developed so that consumers could identify and purchase their bananas of choice. At a later date, the ‘Original Lunchbox Banana’ brand was developed to help differentiate Carnarvon’s bananas from Tropical North Queensland bananas. A trip to Carnarvon isn’t complete without eating bananas for breakfast, lunch and dinner! You can find the Sweeter Bananas in the IGA Supermarket and Woolworths.
Sweeter Banana Bread Our climate in Carnarvon has strong sea breezes in summer which isn’t something the bananas like! Growers do their best to keep the heat, cold and humidity in by growing them close together. Unfortunately, this also means that they grow with marks. The marks are just superficial, they don’t impact the taste, but it just doesn’t look pretty. In this day and age, everyone wants pretty looking things; supermarkets then reject products with marks. The Sweeter Banana growers decided to start producing Sweeter Banana Bread with second grade bananas. The product contains all WA farmer's products and up to 30% of ripe bananas. The bread is great toasted or warmed in the microwave with butter or ricotta cheese. Don’t forget to pick up your loaf from the Visitor Centre or IGA Supermarket when in Carnarvon.
10 | Carnarvon & Coral Bay Destination Guide
Meet our Sweeter Banana Growers Michael and his wife Catriona came from wheat, cattle and sheep farming in New Norcia, to Carnarvon to grow bananas in 2007. “I am continually amazed at the response that I get when people try our bananas” said Michael, “it is really inspiring to be able to live in this fantastic place and grow such a great product that people love”.
Seafood
Homestead Hampers
Most of the state's seafood comes from the waters off Carnarvon with a thriving prawn, scallop, crab and fish industry operating from Carnarvon. Seafood can be purchased from Pickles Point Seafood at the Small Boat Harbour. Seafood is available between the months of March and November, and outside these months the open hours vary.
Homestead Hampers is a unique product made here in the Gascoyne. Chris Higham from Meedoo Station has created a variety of products to showcase our region's fabulous produce, from frozen meal packs to pies and desserts. Homestead Hampers are made out of tasty local meat; second grade fruit and veg. Homestead Hampers can be found at the Gascoyne Growers Markets where you can buy frozen meal packs, suitable for those travelling.
The ‘Fruit Loop’ Totally different from Kellogg’s Froot Loops Cereal, but just as colourful in season. During the months of May to October you can take a drive around South and North River Road which lines the banks of the Gascoyne River. Honesty stalls on the side of the road will have a wide range of produce available to purchase. Eftpos doesn’t exist, so take plenty of coins. Products can be second grade produce but it doesn’t make a difference to the taste.
Chocolate Lovers Plantation shops preserve all second grade produce and create delicious fruit icecreams, but for those who love chocolate, we have a treat for you. You can find banana, mango and strawberry ice-creams covered in chocolate from various plantation shops. Something exotic for the taste buds? We dare you to try Morel’s Black Sapote Icecream, it’s a natural 'chocolate' fruit topped with milk or white chocolate. Morel’s is open from late April to October.
Gascoyne Growers Markets Every Saturday from the end of May to early October the Gascoyne Growers Markets operates from out the front of the Visitor Centre from 8am to 11.30am. You will find tropical fruits, homemade ice-creams, and a wide variety of vegies, herbs, honey, cakes, jams and relishes. Enjoy some serious coffee and delicious breakfast options. Browse through the Courtyard Craft Markets to find yourself a homemade souvenir. The markets are plastic bag free, so be sure to bring along your bags.

Wooramel Riverside Retreat
Rocky Pool
A nature based camp site nestled under the majestic river gums on the Wooramel River 120kms south of Carnarvon and only 2kms off the northwest coastal highway. The station stay offers large shady camp sites, fire pits and clean warm showers. Accommodation such as Eco-Tents and Jackaroo quarters and room are now available. Experience a bit of station life on the self-drive station tour, listen to the birds and watch nature on the riverside walking track, explore the historical tip or just sit back and enjoy listening to the abundant bird life. On the way to Gascoyne Junction, about 55km from Carnarvon (4km of this is unsealed), you will find the magical location of Rocky Pool. It is a beautiful picnic spot with a fresh water pool in one of few places along the Gascoyne River which holds water long after the river ceases to flow. It has gum trees surrounding it and there are kangaroos and birdlife to see. No facilities are available and camping is not permitted.
Gladstone Beach Gladstone Beach is located 160km south of Carnarvon which falls in the waters of Shark Bay World Heritage Marine Park. Gladstone is home to masses of Dugongs who frolic both in the waters near the Old Jetty ruins at Gladstone and also in the sea grass around Carnarvon. Gladstone’s camping facilities include flush toilets, non-potable water, beach boat launch and camp fires permitted. You can enjoy evenings with turquoise blue water and magnificent sunsets. Fran and Richard await your arrival.
Gascoyne Junction 165km east of Carnarvon on bitumen road is the small town of Gascoyne Junction. It is situated on the banks of the mighty Gascoyne River with a permanent water hole almost 4kms in length. A new state of the art Tourism Precinct provides all the supplies required for those travelling further onto Kennedy Range and Mt Augustus.
The Gascoyne Outback Pathways are self-drive trails which open your eyes to the wonders of the landscape and its history. The Kingsford Smith Mail Run drive trail traces the original 1920s overland mail run from Carnarvon to Meekatharra and the pioneering spirit of Australia’s famous pilot, Charles Kingsford Smith. From Carnarvon go to Gascoyne Junction, then to Kennedy Range before heading to Mount Augustus and finishing in Meekatharra. Allow up to four days. Visit www.carnarvon.org.au/ outbackpathways for more info.

NATIONAL PARKS Kennedy Range Gascoyne Junction is located 220km east of Carnarvon. 160km is a sealed road and 60km is unsealed. The Kennedy Range is an eroded plateau located on the rim of the Gascoyne River catchment. There are several trails in the park that give you the opportunity to explore the park’s range country, its plants and animals. The Temple Gorge Trail is approximately 2km return taking up to 2 hours to accomplish. The trail leads you to a fork in the creek under a prominent rock face referred to as the Temple. The Honeycomb Gorge is fairly easy. It's approximately 600m return taking up to 40 minutes to accomplish. The rocky trail takes walkers to a large amphitheatre containing a seasonal waterfall and pool. The Sunrise View Trail, as the name suggest is best experienced at sunrise. The short walk is approximately 300m return taking up to 15 minutes to accomplish. The best time to visit the range is August and September, when the wildflowers are in full bloom.
Mt Augustus Mt Augustus is located about 465km east of Carnarvon, another 265km past Gascoyne Junction on an unsealed road. You can access Mount Augustus by travelling via the Kennedy Range National Park or the Dairy Creek Road. Known as Burringurrah to the local Wajarri Aboriginal people, the park was gazetted in 1989 and is made up of former parts of Mt Augustus and Cobra Stations. Mount Augustus is an asymmetrical anticline which is steeper on its north-eastern side than the south-west. It is 750 metres above its surrounding landscape, and twice the size of Uluru (Ayers Rock) making it the largest rock monolith in the world. There is a 49km loop drive around the rock which provides views of the changing faces of the rock. The Emu Hill Lookout is a nice place to take photos of Mount Augustus, particularly at sunset. Camping is only permitted at Mount Augustus Tourist Park, located 1km from the National Park. Facilities also include unit accommodation with hot showers, laundry and BBQ camp kitchen. Fuel is also available from the station. It is recommended to contact the station before departing.

Blowholes Located just 75km north of Carnarvon along a bitumen road, this natural phenomenon is an awe inspiring sight to see. Powerful ocean swells force water through sea caves and up out of narrow holes in the rocks. Jets of water erupt into the air, sometimes to a height of 20 metres, creating a spectacular sight. Mother Nature is simply amazing but it is important to check the surging tide, wind and swell,
World Famous Surfing If you love surfing, you might recognise the name. Imogen Caldwell is world renowned for her surfing, now travelling around the world modelling. Originally from the east coast, Imogen and her family moved to the remote location of Red Bluff, which is famous for its ‘Bluff Barrel’ left hand reef break. Gnaraloo is another world renowned surfing spot with international visitors and keen surfers flocking the coast for the surf season. Tombstones are only for the experienced but if you’re up for the challenge, give it a go!
which gives that large blow! Although the coast is serene it can be deadly, with a dangerous swell that can turn into king waves, capable of crashing over the top of the rock ledge. This coastline needs to be treated with caution and care - lives have been lost by unsuspecting souls here.
Point Quobba ‘The Aquarium’ Just 1km south of the Blowholes is Point Quobba, a calm coral-filled lagoon with fish and shells in abundance. With a white sandy beach this area is ideal for snorkelling, safe swimming, sun bathing and a great family picnic spot much favoured by locals. This is also a camping area with an overnight fee to be paid to the site ranger.

The Coral Bay settlement is less than three hours drive north of Carnarvon on the Minilya/Exmouth Road. Visitors are greeted with amazing views of pristine sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters.
The real drawcard for the area is the Ningaloo Reef which starts just metres from the shoreline, being one of the world’s only five fringed reefs. This unique natural landscape where the desert meets the reef, teamed with a wide range of accommodation and other facilities, means the area exudes a laid back holiday vibe all year round, allowing visitors to enjoy life at a more relaxed pace. Coral Bay - The Heart of the Ningaloo Reef The Ningaloo Marine Park encompasses Australia’s largest and most accessible fringing coral reef system. Many creatures are found in the Marine Park, including whale sharks (the world’s largest fish), turtles, dugongs, dolphins, manta rays and humpback whales. The marine park has been divided into zones to protect the biodiversity of the natural environment, while allowing for recreational and commercial use. The fringing coral reef is what makes the Coral Bay area so special. Living coral is delicate, with only a thin veneer of living tissue covering the hard coral skeleton. Once damaged, coral often takes many years to grow back.
Experience Coral Bay without getting wet! • Sand boarding – Bring your sand board along to try out the massive dunes • Quad bikes – Experience the remote areas where others can’t get to • Scenic flight – View and photograph many of the marine creatures from the air • Glass bottom boat – get only your feet wet as you walk up to the boat • Bike Ride – You simply don’t need a car in Coral Bay but a bike can get you to places a little faster.
