THE INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT: INCLUSIVE DESIGN FOR THE PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY STEPHANIE KEAN
PROJECT QUESTION
How can we implement iclusive design policies and standards in the public right of way in Albuquerque’s International District through design?
GOALS • Equitable use: The public right of way does not create a
disadvantage for any group of users.
• Flexibility in use: The public right of way accommodates
a wide rage of individual preferences and abilities.
• Perceptible information: The public right of way
effectively conveys necessary information to the user.
DELIVERABLES • Create inclusive designs for community members and create positive pedestrian experiences for all user groups. • Create a set of conscious designs that comply with universal design and ADA guidelines so that any group of users, regardless of ability, can access places and services within the International District. •
Community members will become aware of existing pedestrian infrastructure and be able to influence designers and policy makers to embrace inclusive designs and policies for future projects and development.
• Generate awareness and expand the community’s knowledge of universal design that celebrates diversity and creates an inclusive community.
