ROSWELL N E W M E X I CO VISTORS WELCOME Located in southeastern New Mexico, Downtown Roswell is a Main Street community along Highway 280 full of mystery and wonder. The City of Roswell is popularly known for the UFO incident of 1947. Although the crash site was technically closer to Corona, New Mexico, the Roswell Army Air Field conducted the investigation and now Roswell is the alien capital of the nation. Aside from the very famous intergalactic event, Roswell boasts many recreational areas including Main Street Roswell. No trip is complete without visiting the International UFO Museum. Visitors can begin to explore the truth behind the UFO incident of 1947. Aside from Roswell’s alien community, their industry includes agriculture, aviation, and is considered one of the dairy capitals of New Mexico. With a thriving Main Street, recreational opportunities, fun attractions, and many lodging options, Roswell is a great place to visit and enjoy. Remember, all visitors are welcomed!

LOCATION Roswell is located in southeastern New Mexico. The Main Street is located in the Downtown District along Highway 280. Main Street is home to many local attractions and shopping destinations to tourists.
HISTORY Although there is a rich history of alien studies in Roswell, New Mexico, there are many other events that have created the city that exists today. Roswell came about in 1869 from two adobe buildings constructed by two businessmen, Van C. Smith and Aaron Wilburn, from Omaha, Nebraska. The buildings became the city’s general market and a post office with a sleeping quarter for guests. Smith later acquired the surrounding land and became the city’s first postmaster in 1873. He named the city after his father, Roswell Smith. By 1877, Joseph Calloway bought the land from Smith. An aquifer was discovered shortly later which resulted in the city’s growth and development and the railroad was built in 1893. Main Street is located along the historic railroad, which has contributed to the corridor’s development. Since the ‘90s, it has experienced minor changes. Some buildings have been demolished due to their condition while others have been constructed to meet Main Street’s design standards and composition.

Main Street Roswell works to encourage, foster and stimulate the preservation of historic downtown Roswell, New Mexico. Main Street Roswell works with local government, property owners and merchants to rehabilitate and maintain buildings, while encouraging economic growth in the downtown area.

The Roswell Space Center is home to the Spacewalk. The walk allows people to discover the secrets behind the mystery of the UFO incident of 1947. Local artist Larry Welz used recycled, found, and donated materials to create the Spacewalk. Step into the vortex field of the Space Center to see into Roswell’s past and watch the future unfold from the deck of an alien spaceship.

DESTINATIONS
116 E. 2ND STREET Founded in 1991, the International UFO Museum was organized to inform the public about the 1947 Ro¬swell Incident, when an unidentified object crashed near Roswell. The Museum contains exhibits and information about the Ro¬swell Incident, UFO sightings, and a research library which houses materi¬als about this subject and other related phenomena. The Museum offers lectures and events throughout the year.
