Abstractly inspired from the idea of horizontal strips of color seen in a sunset, this project became one where creativity had no boundaries. We were assigned modern home with no more than 1000 sq. ft. of interior space. However, because there were no restrictions on outdoor space, I decided to extend the expectations and proceeded to design the majority of the house as “exterior deck space. The emphasis of this project was placed on the architecture and a progressive knowledge of construction and the technical documents needed to illustrate an architectural concept.

The Zellis Residence is inspired from the Impressionistic art period. Impressionist pieces are characteristic of their depiction of light and emphasis of movement. This is evident within the shape of the room including the trim, the chosen furniture, and the mantel piece. The color scheme is derived from the painting which brings out rich reds, black, white, grays, and an accent of gold. The tile chosen also emulates the painting’s color scheme while remaining functional for the space. The intended client was assigned as a middle aged man from South Korea now living in Boston, Illinois. This strong cultural theme is also very present within the space manifesting itself in the color scheme, the shape of the light fixture, the piece above the mantel, and many of the artifact accessories throughout the room. Although the combination of several themes may be dubiously risky, it pulls together to create a coherent traditional living room.
The modern Radke Residence was inspired by the artistic, loose stroke of the hand. This form of art is very expressive and full of emotion which greatly compliments a modern approach to residential design. It brings life and feeling to the spaces and invokes thought upon entering. Contrasting the curvilnear lines, the geometric pieces add another unexpected pop of interest. Designed spaces need interest and expression in order to keep the eye moving while also creating a sense of wonder when an individual experiences a space. The Radke Residence is an example of how contradicting yet cohesive elements can come together as one in a meaninful arrangement.
There is nothing worse than the feeling of restriction and disability that comes from an injury, especially for those who thrive in motion. Custom Physical Therapy was designed to fit the needs of an active lifestyle. My goal was to create a space which had the ability to lift moods and to inspire motivation and healing. I designed it to be a place that reflects the lifestyle of the mountain while bringing a modern and graphic take on healing and rehabilitation. Given the shell of the building, we were assigned to create a functional floorplan for a physical therapy practice located in an assigned location.
Fuego cafe blends well with the urban city life, the tropical climate, and pushes the modernity that young business people enjoy. With unique metropolitan architectural features, fires blazing left and right, and cutting edge design, Fuego Cafe will provide an ideal location for the night life common in urban areas. The design will integrate an inviting environment where taking a minute to relax is encouraged. It will also contain cutting edge and innovative modernity in which people from the city thrive. Its night scene atmosphere and focus on lighting will create the perfect hybrid of design and function. It will be a space that evokes the use of all five senses. Fires crackling, water trickling, reflections glimmering, and conversation buzzing will all find their place in this uniquely and architecturally defined space.
The Cosmic Nudge is a non-profit organization that focuses on self-healing methods and positive reinforcement. The primary way I focused on the organizations’s goals and services was to incorporate the use of nature and its elements in the remodel of an existing office space. From this comes features such as calming color schemes, feelings of peace, and a mind at ease. It promotes meditation and self-reflection. Attention is also drawn to the symbolic features of the circle such as connection, continuity and peace.
DFS Financial was essentially a space planning project. Given was the description of the company, the number of employee workstations they wished to fit inside the building, and other amenities they preferred. We were assigned group members and then proceeded to begin researching modern workstations and space planning methods. We created the unique pod shapes in order to be as efficient with space and circulation as we saw possible. What resulted from this project was an increased understanding of commercial planning and design.

Our Senior Capstone Project encompassed many aspects of design. We were given a large abandoned site in Smithfield, UT and assigned to research and redevelop all aspects of the needed improvements. After pinpointing the businesses and facilities Smithfield lacked, we proceeded to redesign the area. As a group, we came up with a proposed site plan and decided on architectural emphasis. We were then assigned individual buildings in order to complete the specific architectural features. Afterwards, we targeted the interiors on an individual basis, each designing in our own styles but with a consciousness of the city’s unique history and integrity. We were also given opportunities to begin brand development for several of our designs.
Firehouse pizzeria is known for its stone-fired ovens and the unforgettable flavor they bring to the food. Customers love to see the freshly baked pizzas being cooked to perfection right before their eyes. I decided to create a focal point with this marketing strategy upon entrance into the restaurant. Stone-fired ovens are visible for customers seated in either leg of the pizzeria. Only fitting was the incorporation and re-use of building materials such as brick, concrete, salvaged wood with the additional traditional twist consisting of the uniquely shaped booth seating and eclectic striped floor patter indicating circulation.
Hunk-A-Bread is known for its inviting street presence and atmosphere. No one can resist the scent of freshly baked bread and the sight of shelves line with pastries. For this reason, I made sure to open this baking establishment directly to the outdoors by placing large, repeating windows along mainstreet. Comfortable seating arrangements were also incorporated to promote additional conversation and friendship. The neutral tones used are comforting and relaxing, and invite guests to stay as long as they please while the warmth of the fire presents an irresistable element which can’t be ignored. This newly branded bakery and pastry shop will be the gathering place for the community of sixth and main.
Kikflip is a retail store assigned whose content was entirely up to me. I chose to design a skate and snowboard shop because of the proximity to multiple ski resorts. The area is also heavily populated with teens and young adults. I was inspired by geometric shapes, primarily the triangle and its angles. I carried this throughout the space with the angled flooring with tiled triangles surrounding the edges, the wall installations, the front tapestry, and with the angled trussed ceiling. The colors used reflect both the mountain, and the concrete terrain skaters and boarders use alike.
The boutique hotel was the individual building I was assigned to develop the architecture. The Boho Hotel began with just that- the exterior architecture. The most recognizable feature of this building is the terraced levels and alternating deck levels. These terraced portions allow for large amounts of exterior green space to be made available for nearly every guest. This connection with the outdoors is the feature that drove the design of the hotel. Every room is equipped with floor to ceiling windows that will provide breath-taking views of Cache valley and the mountain range. The patterns used in the suites and other guest rooms are reminiscent of patterns and inspirations found in nature. Not only do these green spaces enhance the quality of stay for the guests, they are also extremely beneficial for the means of sustainability and environmental awareness. With hardscapes being made “green, the heat island effect caused from typical buildings of this proportion with drastically drop. The greenery will be a means for shade and natural cooling of the building. It will also serve as a means for water retention and re-use. This sustainable connection made with the Boho Hotel will remind guests of the importance to respect the surrounding environment and will promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles.

When redesigning the Morgan Pea Factory into a fine dining restaurant, my focus was to maintain the historical integrity of the building. The history of Smithfield, UT is based upon this individual building and its legacy. I was fascinated with the concrete columns and insisted on accentuating their unique characteristics. Along with maintaining the historical value, sustainably designing this new atmosphere was another area of focus. By recycling many natural resources found on site, re-using building materials, and taking advantage of other local resources, the quality of the new Morgan Pea Factory is uncompromisable.
