Cat Scratches

This weekend the Cougars will face No. 22 Wayne State College (8-0, 1-0 NSIC) and No. 10 Augustana College (4-1, 0-1 NSIC) at the Stewart Center. Friday’s game against Wayne State is set to begin at 6 p.m. while Saturday the Cougars will take on the Vikings at 4 p.m.

• Mack Johnson’s 19-point night against Waldorf College is the most points scored by a USF true freshman in almost five seasons; 2008-09 GPAC Freshman of Year Skyler Bloch scored 22 points in USF’s 106-101 overtime loss to Hastings College on December 13, 2008.

Fast Start The Cougars have started off the 2013-14 season with five straight wins. The start is the best for USF since the 2010-11 season when the Cougars started out the season with eight straight wins and is the second best start since Travis Traphagen took over the Cougars women’s basketball program in 2008.

• Sioux Falls currently ranks No. 2 in the NSIC in scoring offense. The Cougars are pouring in an average of 89.4 points per game; only MSU-Moorhead (92.0) is putting more points on the board. • The Cougars are also the NSIC’s best at defending from deep; USF opponents are shooting a league-low 23.7% from three-point range.

By the Numbers: 7.0- Average 3-point shots made for the Cougars during the 2012-13 season. 8.4-Average 3-point shots made for the Cougars in five games this season. 9.2-3-point FG’s made per game for the Vikings in five games this season. 13.0-Points per game for senior Laura Johnson in three career games against the Vikings 16.6- Points per game average this season for Laura Johnson which is the 12th highest in the NSIC this season.

Last Time They Played WSC: 2/16/13 (Sioux Falls, S.D.) The University of Sioux Falls women’s basketball team closed out its 2012-13 home slate in style with an 81-63 victory against Wayne State College. USF (12-12, 9-11 NSIC) continued its hot-and-cold shooting from the perimeter. Less than 12 hours removed from a 5-for-26 downtown performance versus Augustana College, the Cougars torched the Wildcats from the arc, dropping in 13 of 20 three-point attempts, including 8-for-11 in the second half. Wayne State (15-9, 11-9 NSIC) led 34-32 at the half but had no answer for the Cougars’ perimeter scoring, as Laura Johnson, Bailey Bouman and Alyssa Rushton combined to shoot 11-for-15 from three. Rushton earned top scoring honors. The senior finished with a gamehigh 22 points on 9-for-16 shooting. She also pulled down seven boards and had five assists.

Senior reserve center Kelli Hoff—a player seldom at center stage that Traphagen called the most selfess player he’s ever coached— made her first career start on Senior Day and made the most of the opportunity. Hoff tied her career-high with 11 points and chipped in three rebounds and two blocks. Up by 20 at 81-61, Traphagen emptied his bench and the Cougars coasted to the victory.

2013-14 BASKETBALL GAMEDAY

Bench 27 25

Score tied - 3 times. Lead changed - 2 times.

The University of Sioux Falls men’s basketball team suffered a 77-57 NSIC loss Saturday night to Wayne State College in the Cougars’ final home game of the season. Trailing by four points at the break, USF went cold and the Wildcats caught fire, as they shot a staggering 65 percent in the final period to record their 16th win of the year. It was anyone’s game in the first half. USF didn’t get off to a great start. Four minutes into the game, they were down 9-2, but they countered with a 14-2 run capped by a steal and fast break Holland dunk to claim a 16-11 lead at the 11:24 mark of the first half. The Wildcats began to heat up from deep and made their push. Led by Ryan Rolfzen, who accounted for a trio of first half 3-pointers himself, WSC converted five shots from 3-point range to close out the half and take a 32-28 lead into the break. WSC couldn’t seem to miss in the second half. The combination of Army Shelby, who posted 23 second half points and 15 baskets on 23 attempts by the visiting team meant a world of trouble for USF. USF climbed their way back into the game and trailed by just three points, 45-43, with 14:11 to play. Then Shelby and WSC shut the Cougars down offensively and ran away with the game. They applied a 16-3 run to go up 65-49 with 5:32. USF would cut their deficit to as few as 13 points before falling by 20 points at home. A.J. Holland led USF with 14 points, finishing 6-of-11 from the field. He also went 2-of-4 from behind the arc. The game served as the final home contest for USF seniors Patrick Coughlin, Bill Freeman, A.J. Holland, David Maxwell and James Rader.

The University of Sioux Falls used an explosive first half to top Augustana College 70-58 Friday night and snap a 11-game series losing streak in the first-ever matchup between the two schools at the Stewart Center. Following a 14-point first half, the Cougars held off a late Viking’s push with clutch free throw shooting at the line, where they converted 21-of-25 attempts in the final period. The most compelling stat of the game is that USF’s last field goal came at the 12:46 mark of the second half. Their final 18 points came at the stripe, where they went 18-of-22 to end the game. USF’s bench was also a major factor. The Cougars’ reserves outscored Augustana’s, 34-16. The last time USF had defeated Augustana was during the 1994-95 season. With the win, USF has won three-straight and improved to 11-12, 7-12 in NSIC play.

USF’s bench was also a major factor. The Cougars’ reserves outscored Augustana’s, 34-16. James Rader led the way for USF, pouring in 19 points, on 8-of-12 shooting, and six rebounds. His total matched Cameron McCafferey for a game-high. Robert Goffney also had a solid night, especially at the charity stripe. He went 7-of-8 at the line and finished with 12 points.

USF-Augustana: The Mayor’s Cup Challenge Each year, the Augustana College and University of Sioux Falls athletic departments will compete headto-head in sixteen (16) common, equally weighted, sports to determine which school and their fan base can claim the bragging rights for that year. The winning school will be awarded the Mayor’s Cup. By placing equal emphasis on all sports, the series helps to build community awareness for less publicized Olympic sports. The series focuses on the message that “Every Game Counts” and that the rivalry between the schools is a year-long affair. The competition will go beyond the fields of sport and into the classroom and community. A point will be awarded to the athletic department whose student-athletes achieve the higher grade point average. Additional points will be awarded to the department who garners the most support from their students, alumni and fans in a year-long community event. Two events will be held each year and 1 point will be awarded per event. The University of Sioux Falls was awarded the final point of the 2012-13 Sioux Falls Mayor’s Cup Challenge while Augustana College walked away with the inaugural Mayor’s Cup Trophy as presented by First Dakota National Bank. USF student-athletes boasted a 3.25 grade point average

to take the end-of-year academic point and create a final score of 13 to 6.0 in favor of the Vikings. USF defeated the Vikings on the gridiron 32-21 (2 OT) on October 20 for its first Mayor’s Cup point. The Cougars also secured single points for men’s golf, women’s indoor track and field, the first Mayor’s Cup blood drive and end-of-year student athlete grade point average. Augustana won 11 points amongst 16 common sports this past year, taking the head-to-head competitions versus the Cougars in women’s soccer and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s indoor track and field, women’s tennis, softball, women’s golf, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Inclement weather forced a cancelation of the USF and Augustana softball contest and the Vikings were awarded the point based on final NSIC standings. The Vikings also won the second Mayor’s Cup blood drive. The Cougars and Vikings split the home-andhome in men’s basketball and a baseball double-header to create the final margin. The competition for this season’s Mayor’s Cup started on September 21 when USF hosted Augustana in volleyball. The Cougars knocked off the Vikings in five sets, 25-27, 25-27, 25-23, 28-26, 15-13.

As part of Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day, USF Athletics asked the members of the women’s & men’s basketball teams one question:

Who is your favorite faculty or staff member at USF? Top of the Class • The University of Sioux Falls track & field team had 14 athletes named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team, while both the men’s and women’s squads were tabbed as All-Academic teams by the USTFCCCA. • Billy Brockmueller was the recipent of 2012 Elite 89 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA championships. • In addition, Brockmueller was just one of two NSIC student-athletes to be named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II Track/Cross Country Second Team. • Seven members of the USF cross country squads earned USTFCCCA All-Academic status for the 2012 cross country season. • Last season, USF boasted 12 NSIC Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award winners, the most of any NSIC institution.
