US OPEN SDC BOARD OF DIRECTORS WELCOME YOU We want to WELCOME those of you returning and those who are here for the first time. Those who return each year know what this weekend is about and what you are going to experience. For those here for the first time, fasten your seat belt. You are in for an experience of a life time. . . . a weekend of pheonominal competition and dancing . . . a US Open experience. Last year we added Pro/Am Routines and multi levels of Jack & Jill’s. This year we add Jack & Jill for Juniors and Masters. These additions have added value to coming and competing at the US Open. The Pro/Am divisions allow dancers to perform with their Pros and encourage them to develop as routine dancers. The winning Pro/Am Leader and Pro/Am Follower will open Saturday evening with their winning routine. Dancers who want to earn World Swing Dance Council points can now do so at the US Open by dancing in our multi levels of Jack & Jills. This has brought so many new dancers to the US Open for the first time. We now are seeing the other divisions grow as dancers now can enter several divisions. We are so happy to make the US Open, an event dancers want to attend. Over the years, we have tried to add new elements to make the US Open a little better each year. Since last year was our 30th Anniversary, we celebrated by having the PROGRAM TABLE with copies of all 29 years. To see the table surrounded by young and old sharing stories and reminiscing made this daunting project all worth it. This year, I only had to make one copy to add to the table. Please stop by and see who danced when and with whom, who was judging and teaching. These programs document so much of the history of our dance community and is PRICELESS. This will be our 6th year broadcasting/streaming the US Open with Global Dance.tv. It is one of the best production teams and is dedicated to bringing you the best in streaming for you, your family, and friends around the world. Not only is it LIVE, but allows ON DEMAND and for two weeks following the event. Competitors – make sure you stop to be interviewed so you can say hi or thank you to those watching. There are so many people who come together to make this weekend so special. We give a big THANK YOU, to our JUDGES, INSTRUCTORS, SCORING, DEEJAYS, MC’S, VOLUNTEERS, VENDORS, and our key US OPEN STAFF. Your help and support of the US Open this year is so appreciated. This event wouldn’t be anything without the COMPETITORS and the ATTENDEES. We do this all for you and we hope this weekend is a magical experience which keeps you coming back year after year.
Remember to Share the Dream – Share the Passion Sincerely, Tyoni Martin Event Director US OPEN SWING DANCE CHAMPHIONS, INC

ome US OPEN attendees like to just relax and enjoy the energy of the excellent performances observed at a championship event. Others are more curious about how the judges make their decisions. Timing is simply controlling the speed of the action, in order to step precisely on the beat of the music. It is the ability to transfer weight in standard rhythms and syncopations, in a manner that fits the music being played.

Six beat patterns include, but are not limited to: passes, underarm turns, push-breaks, opento-closed and closed-to-open position patters. Eight beat patterns include, but are not limited to: whips, swing-outs, Lindy circles, and Shag pivots.”

Starting with centering, technique incorporates how well the dancers exhibit good control of foot placement, body-lines, balance, and spins. Good choreography demonstrates an intimate connection between the dancer’s movements and the phrasing, variety and contract of the music. Along with a well-rounded, technically good performance, presentation includes the ability to interest, excite, or simply entertain an audience. Our Referee will ensure the rules for each division are properly applied. Counting lifts, considering props, and determining partner separation are just three of the Referee’s responsibilities.

Gone from our dance floors, but not from our hearts... David Koppelman
David Koppelman was a favorite deejay and worked our event for years. He was scheduled to work last year on Thursday evening. When he didn’t show, we got concerned. Jack Smith drove to his home and that is when we received the sad news that David had passed. It was a tough way to start the event last year, but everyone rallied together and just made it work. He suffered from ALS and is now at peace. We miss you David.
Jack Carey Jack and Annie are honored in the US Open’s Walk of Legends for a reason. I can’t speak of one without the other. They were Ambassadors of swing and for the US Open. Wherever they went, they encouraged dancers to come to the US Open to compete. They helped to build the name and the title. Jack was our head judge for many years and got to enjoy his last US Open without the stress of the job. He socialized and visited with so many of you last year. His passing has left a huge hole in our dance community and especially for our dear friend Annie. We love you Jack and Annie.

BALLROOM ETIQUETTE Show your wristband when entering the ballroom. This will help our volunteer staff and expedite your entry. Everyone must have a wristband or a ticket to enter the ballroom. Arrive promptly before scheduled competition times and take your seat. If you arrive during a performance, the ushers will not allow you to enter until the performance is completed. When the routine is over, they will let you in before the next performance. All the seats facing the front and seats near the dance floor on the sides are Reserved. The chairs will be marked with a label designating a Section, Row, and seat number. Please respect the ticket owner by leaving their chair available for when they come into the ballroom. Open seating is located on the left and right sides of the seating arena and are marked with seat covers. If seat is not available, you may stand in the Standing Room Only sections until a seat becomes available. DO NOT sit on the floor, the steps, or in the aisles at any time. Fire codes require that aisles and walkways remain unobstructed throughout the event. NonͲcompliance can result in expulsion from the event without a refund. Two people can’t share one chair. This is disrespectful to the people sitting around you. Pets are not allowed in the ballroom. It can be hazardous to the them and to the attendees. For their own safety, small children must be supervised by an adult at all times while in the ballroom. We request that you not allow them to run around freely. Strollers must be parked outside the ballroom in a designated stroller area. In addition, soft ear plugs are recommended so as not to damage their delicate eardrums – our speakers can be particularly loud. Safety rails are available for those who need them by the deejay booth and by the Global Dance Interview station. They aren’t provided near the front as the rails block some of our attendees view. 59
BALLROOM PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO POLICY

NonͲcompliance can result in expulsion from the event without a refund. YES, you can use your own camera in the ballroom, however please observe the following. . . . 9 Still shots only 9 All cameras must have a “camera pass” attached to their camera. They are FREE. Please go to the Registration desk to get yours. Still shots are okay and we just need to identify cameras and their users. 9 You can’t sit in someone‘s seat or block people’s view while taking pictures. 9 We have an “Official Photographer” who is the only photographer on the floor. Thank you for your cooperation! Please remember that our volunteer staff is working very hard to make your experience at the US OPEN a most enjoyable one. I
n the swing dance community, there are those individuals who exhibit a true dedication to the promotion and support of the US OPEN Swing Dance Championships. Their efforts have always been to encourage and improve the US OPEN experience for all attendees, competitors and spectators alike. Without them, the US OPEN would not be the same. They are, and will always be, part of the US OPEN family. Each year, the Board of Directors will choose and honor those who have made this effort and gone beyond the realm of normal support. To show our appreciation, the Walk of Legends life-size portraits are displayed each year to honor those individuals, and will serve to remind the public of those who have kept the faith of the dancers and supported your dance event.
2013 We are pleased to honor

In 1983, Jack and Mary Ann Bridges had a dream. They wanted to provide a venue where all genres of swing dancers could come together for a weekend of competition and fun social dancing. That was the birth of the US Open Swing Dance Championships. With the help of key people in the dance community and the dancers, the US Open became the title to win. Careers have been made with this title. After 18 years of producing this amazing event, Jack and Mary Ann decided they wanted to retire and sold their event to a special group of people. The US Open Stockholders have taken great pride in keeping the status of the US Open as one of the premier dance events. This is a special group of dancers who came together to keep the US Open alive and well. Our slogan is heartfelt.
Share the Dream and Share the Passion We are proud to bring you the 31st US Open. If you are enjoying yourself this weekend, be sure to go up and thank them.
