he year 2009 gave us many wonderful and memorable trends. designers revisited the 1920s, giving us a smattering of The great gatsby and flapper sensibilities; they sashayed into the 1940s with form fitting silhouettes and ladylike panache; rocked the neon boneyard of the 1980s with structured shoulders, power suiting and lots of acid colours; retooled the rocker aesthetic of the moto jacket in varied incarnations, styles and leathers; gave us lots of statement jewellery pieces and headgear. who could forget the elegant, power statement of dolce & gabbana’s glove headpieces? lanvin made us swoon, dolce & gabbana made us take notice, vuitton made us smile and rethink our budgets, chanel made our pulses quicken and our credit card statements higher than normal; prada, well, was prada, there is always something to love there; versace was like a cat on a hot tin roof, smouldering; alexander wang’s collection put us into spending overdrive and armani added the usual quiet elegance that every wardrobe needs. but fear not, fashion’s punctuation mark does not lessen its impact with the ending of 2009. Quite the contrary, as 2010 has come in like a roaring lion with plenty to be excited about. The power suiting and structured shoulders have now given away to an athletic bent with hints of shoulder padding and the like; red is one of the strong power colours of the season; shorts rule the runway for men and women; high heels are still a sure thing, as are adorned flats. unstructured ponytails worn on the side as though braided without thought and in a hurry will be di rigueur for the season, and a great way to beat the humidity and heat; boxy jackets and roomy rolled cuff pants replace the more fitted styles. a new suiting silhouette emerged with blazers and shorts worn together, giving casual friday a newer, fresher look; pattern, patterns and more patterns should be on everyone’s list, with givenchy, rodarte and vuitton doing it exceptionally well. bright colours ranging from sun, to burnished sienna, to jade, to citron, to peacock, to umber, ocher and slate provide a beautiful bevy of choices to get one through the season. strappy heels, peep toes, platforms and clogs should cause one to check their list and then check it twice. as with any season, embrace what feels right to you, wear the uniform that you feel best in and always wear confidence — it makes any outfit look like the perfect fit! happy new year. stephanie@khaleejtimes.com
