In this Issue The excitement is always alwa high around the office when it’s time for the fashion issue. Everyone happily scans disc after disc of fashion collections. What trends do we choose? What looks tell the best story of the season? How will the fashion review relate to the fashion story? This time around it was simple: we had gotten our Tim Burton-inspired Alice in Wonderland fantasies out of our system, so it was on to more elegant and regal settings. What better icon of style to epitomise that feeling than Grace Kelly herself? With an exhibition about her style currently showing at the Victoria & Albert museum in London, and Vanity Fair having ha dedicating one of its recent issues to her and her legacy of style, it was an easy decision. For art, we checked in on the comings and goings of the Art Basel fair. Fine Art Advisor Michele Quinn, walked us through the rarified world of art during the four-

da affair. day Travel brought us back to our own backyard, Abu Dhabi. Wanting adventure but a slice of home led us to Anantara’s Qasr Al Sarab located in the Empty Quarter. With sunshine, endless sand dunes, pools, sumptuous buffets and relaxing spa treatments, what more could we really need? Our very own Adam Zacharias worked up a hunger while exploring Ho chi Minh City in Vietnam and shared his tasty adventure, meal by meal. Cultural Distinctions caught up with artist Mouna Hatoum in Beirut to find out what makes her tick and what her latest installation is really all about. For fashion purist, film costume design and Edith Head are synonymous. There have ha been many designers who were more elaborately creative, perhaps more original, but no other costume designer has done more for this art form. Her design ethos was simple, costumes should support the character, er rather than er, compete with it. Ahead of her time, Edith understood, more than most, that clothing was not just adornment but a powerful means of visual communication between the character and the audience, working in conjunction with the sound and other visual elements of a film. During her storied career, career Edith worked and collaborated with several movie directors, the most notable being Alfred Hitchock. Head was costume designer on most of Hitchcock’s films, both at Paramount and later at Universal Pictures. A few of her more high profile Hitchcock films were: Notorious, the 1946 film starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman and To Catch a Thief, the 1955 film starring Grant and Grace Kelly. lly Here her trademark lly. style and deft hand were now discernible. Head’s film career credits began with the silent film The Wanderer in the early 1920s and carried through to the black and white Steve Martin comedy, comedy Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid in the 1980s. Along the way, wa Head designed countless wardrobes for films, television mini-series and even designed the Women’s uniforms for the United States Coast Guard. She won her Academy Awards for The Heiress, 1949, Samson and Delilah, 1950, All About Eve, 1950, A Place in the Sun, 1951, Roman Holiday, Holida 1953, Sabrina, 1954, The Facts of Life, 1960, and The Sting, 1973. Little is truly known about Edith Head, outside of the steely persona she exuded. The origins of her birth are vague, with most biographer accounts and remaining records verifying California; It is known that she was married twice — once to Charles Head for thirteen years and to set designer Wiard Ihnen for thirty nine; that she graduated from Stanford University; worked as a language and art teacher; and was known for her bowl-cut blunt bangs and neat chignon at the back, oversized round black glasses, red lipstick and her penchant for skirt suits. Her famous persona was the basis for the wise-cracking superhero costume designer Edna in the Disney animated film The Incredibles, a tongue-n-cheek homage from Disney to one of the greats of movie history. ory ory. Nestled among the Villa Modas and the Zumas of the world, sits pretty a classy abode of stylishly mounted photographs. Yes, we are talking about the Empty Quarter — the only gallery solely dedicated to showcasing contemporary works of photographers of our times. The photos that fill this space are categorised into various themes ranging from The House, Fog n Darkness, Un Canny Places, Safe Playground Pla etc, with each of the exhibits solely the rendition of the artist to the subject under their lens. “The best part of these pics,” Elie, the director of the gallery, gallery says, sa “is that no digital tampering has been done to any of these. It is exactly as seen through the lens and as manipulated by the cameras.” One photo that was the most enigmatic of them all, was that of a portly man, deep in conversation with his business partner, partner is completely unaware una that he is being photographed. The photo is shot through the leaves lea of a tree as though a child is peeping with all his innocence. There are many photos like this one, that resonates with one’s life and catapults your imagination to great lengths. FASHIONABLE READS THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF STYLE

Nina Garcia’s The Little Black Book of Style, is an affectuous aff read on putting oneself together without the preachiness of ‘what not wear’ rules. She gives the reader a good look at her not so humble beginnings and why confidence is the sexiest accessory a woman can have. ha Nina knows a thing or two about fashion, she was the Fashion Director of Elle Magazine USA US and serves as a judge on the popular Project Runway Runwa show. show The book is illustrated by Ruben Toledo, who was a brilliant pick as he too knows a thing or two about fashion, his wife is Isabella Toledo, the former head designer for Anne Klein and her eponymous label. At 144 pages, it is a delightful and informative read that every fashionista-in-training should have ha on her bookshelf.

“I’m only interested in taking pictures of attractive people, doing attractive things, in attractive places,” legendary lensman Slim Aarons once quipped. An ethos, he stuck with throughout his entire career. career Flip through the aesthetically beautiful Poolside and you will find a stunning array arra of vintage photos of wealthy, wealthy beautiful jet-setters doing just what Aarons liked: lounging, lounging splashing and sashaying sasha about in their seemingly glamourous well-connected lives. A Dublin thoroughfare at night (Dublin 2), is dedicated to prehistoric and medieval Ireland. While there, do take in the excellent new exhibition, “Kingship & Sacrifice.” The National Museum of Decorative Arts and History in Collins Barracks (Benburb Street, Dublin 7), houses an eclectic collection with historical relevance, notably the uniform Michael Collins was shot in, as well as an exhibition on the Easter Rising. 5PM Walk through St. Patrick Pa ’s Cathedral. The pretty Philadelphia girl who went to LA in search of fame, eventually won an Oscar and attracted the attentions of a European prince, is a story that screams ‘Walt ‘W Disney serial’, but not one many could have ha foreseen when confronted with the thousands of similar looking young women who made the journey from the rest of the country to Tinsel Town at the same time. It is therefore testament to her abilities as an actress, her astounding beauty and style, which saw sa her plucked from obscurity and put on the fast-track to a fairytale existence, albeit one that ended in ill-fated tragedy and far too soon. This September will mark the passing of 28 years since Her Serene Highness, The Princess of Monaco was taken from this world. Yet, almost thirty years on, her image remains very much at the forefront of pop culture. Her spirit, of course, lives on through her movies. Brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Marni, Kate Moss, Prada and Steven Alan have ha all embraced the short-film format, each releasing a film or series of films in different diff cinematic formats over the last five years to relative success. Chanel threw their hat in the ring in 2005 with its Baz Luhrman directed 3-minute extended commercial (if one could call it that) for their Chanel No 5 fragrance. This minisode featured Nicole Kidman meeting a lovely-tolook-at geek, played pla by Brazilian star Rodrigo Santoro, both swept up in the heady scent of romance. Marni’s arty and obscure release in January 2010 was a 2-minute stop-motion video vignette done in collaboration with video artist Rohan Wadham, featuring two white porcelain almond-eyed dolls. The short was one part art installation vibe and one part eerie Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas style, with a touch of film noir thrown in. The viewers observe the two dolls finding their wa across a white frozen tundra and to each way other by the film’s end. The message was unclear was it about solitude and finding oneclear, self? Ms Tatou has the kind of face that is expressive, open and beautiful and an ingénue appeal that draws dra the viewer in. Karl Largerfeld, creative director of Chanel also has recently created Remember Now, a passionate look at gilded youth with a touch of Frederico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. The film looks at a man (French actor Pascal Greggory) revisting his beloved Saint-Tropez after nearly 30 years. Fashion has a tendency to mirror life, so many of the inspirations behind these mini cinematic features are previous films, think Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, Lolita, Brigette Bardot, Truffaut, Lynch and Hitchcock, as much for their content as for their look and feel. Prada mined Lolita for its Riviera Love, which promotes their new line of sunglasses and Chanel’s wove a Fellini back-story into Remember Now. Forward thinking brands are already grasping the obvious of three-dimensional fashion and the visual rewards it can bring. The creation of these film noir-inspired short-films are making the medium the hottest new accessory for a brand and its ability to evoke emotions, visually stimulate the viewer and promote itself.

for the cover shoot for the launch issue of their new magazine. I meet with them in our conference room for 10 minutes before the models go in to discuss the concept of the shoot answer and questions they might have ha about models. In the meantime, I spend some time working on some proposals for the briefs that came in this morning and sending out quotations.

A quick bowl of granola cereal and I dash out of the house and drive to work. After using cabs for 3 years to get around Dubai I have ha finally learnt to drive in Dubai a year ago, so driving my silver VW polo to work is still a novelty for me.

Grab a large skinny latte from the coffee coff shop downstairs(even the barista knows my name),

and reach the office. Our office is on the 33rd floor and overlooks the Palm, so on a clear day da I can see The World.

I have ha a new brief from a client managing a shoe brand looking to bring models in from overseas for their upcoming shoot. I spend the rest of the afternoon researching models from agencies all over Europe and liaising with bookers book on their models’ availability av and negotiating rates. it takes me about an hour or more to go through my work emails. My emails can consist of briefs from local and international clients with requests for models, for fashion stylists and hair and make up artists. Each day da I receive around 30 -40 emails alone from models and model agencies around the world proposing their models and seeking representation. It takes a long time to sift through all of the models’ images sent to us, so we tend to set a side a whole afternoon. Once a week, I sit with Sara the other senior booker and we go though to see if there are any models that we know would be great for the Dubai market.

rt Basel is the international contemporary art exhibition held each year in Basel, Switzerland since its inception in 1970. Considered to be the world’s premier international art show for Modern and contemporary works, Art Basel features nearly 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. More than 2,500 artists, ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of emerging stars, are represented in the show’s multiple sections. Works on view include the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, dra drawings, installations, photography, ography video and ography, editioned works from the most important fine art dealers worldwide. 61,000 people attended Art Basel in 2009, including art collectors, art dealers, artists, curators and other art enthusiasts. Art Statements, a smaller side venue within Unlimited, provides a unique venue for those seeking emerging artists, featuring one-person stands from rising galleries worldwide.

DA TWO: DAY TW This is when the real frenzy begins! This entire day da is reserved for the most exclusive of invited guests, allowing the first priority access at noon. It is a mad rush of some of the most powerful figures, jockeying for position to enter as soon as the doors. While it is well known that many works are sold before the fair, fair it is still critical to arrive early to be the first to find the works that have ha not been scooped away, ay and this could mean the ay, diff difference in minutes if a collector gets to the booth before you. A second VIP level entry begins at 3pm – which means, of course, significant artworks, ha been previewed and sold in the prior three have hour window. window The final entry level is from 7pm9pm for the official Vernissage. While either provides a nourishing nibble between meals, picky eaters may ma be disadvantaged by the ‘lucky dip’ manner in which both ‘banh bao’ and ‘banh mi’ are usually served. Vietnam is famed for its sugary iced coffee coff (‘ca phe sua da’), also readily available from carts dotted all over Ho Chi Minh. Mixing black coffee coff with sweetened condensed milk, the refreshing beverage is poured over ice and can be bought in clear plastic cups for the equivalent of two dirhams. If that doesn’t satisfy your sweet tooth, most restaurants offer off

banana or pineapple fritters, along with ice cream for a traditional dessert. If you do have ha a cheeky hankering for something a little more familiar, familiar pizza is a familiar item on restaurant menus – although it may ma set you back a little more than a local dish – or you could try the delicious full English breakfast at a pub (imaginatively titled ‘Le Pub’) in District 1. But let’s shun such frivolities and get back to the issue at hand. A staple part of my holida diet was the widely available ‘banh xeo’, a day crepe pancake indigenous to southern Vietnam which is filled with chicken, shrimp, bean sprouts, lettuce and spring onions. And ‘pho’ also demands a mention – possibly the most famous of all the nation’s foods, it’s a noodle soup which contains thin strips of chicken or beef, alongside spring onions, ginger vinegar, ginger, vinegar pepper and chili. Ensure you don’t leave lea the country before you’ve tried it. When it comes to fast food, the socialist

republic nation has so far managed to resist the globe-strangling might of McDonald’s or Burger King (the most recognised explanation is that the government fears their introduction would devastate the country’s farming industry). One of the few Western chains to have ha successfully set up shop is KFC, although rumours are abuzz that Subwa will be coming way to Saigon in the near future. But overall the Vietnamese are a lean and healthy people, with few obesity problems (this rule seemed to change when it came to my neighbouring passengers flying into and out of Ho Chi Minh, but that’s another story). This is largely thanks to their reliance on simple dietary customs – filling up on fruit and veg, steamed rice and unprocessed meats, while shunning rich, creamy sauces and super-sized portions. So although you may ma eat like a king in Saigon, you won’t end up looking like Henry VIII after your visit.

hen planning a holiday, holida one does not alwa want to board a flight and always tra ten hours to their destination, travel no matter how picturesque the locale or how beautiful the visage is from the window seat. When I have ha travelled tra far away and have ha to tra again, I always travel alwa want something that is nearer to home and where I don’t have ha to stand in a queue, empty my pockets, pass through a scanner or check luggage. Ha Having tra traveled to a remote location on my last outing, I was now seeking an idyllic destination easily in reach within the UAE. I wanted — no, needed — rest andrelaxation,thedesertandthesea,pamperingfroma wellappointedstaff, staff and,ofcourse,excellentfood/drink staff, and a plethora of activity options. I wanted the option of a garden view or a sea view. view To be asked if I wanted inhouse spa treatments or spa treatments within my suite and/or villa. Someone to plan my day da accordingly from

my wish list of activities. In short, paradise. Well, as it so happens, Paradise was just across the desert. Thanks to the recently opened Anantara resorts inAbuDhabi—theQasrAlSarabandtheDesertIslands Resort and Spa — three hours drive from Dubai to Qasr Al Sarab and a short flight to Sir Bani Yas for the Desert Sands Resort and Spa. The Anantara chain is known for their luxurious resorts and beautiful locations, so I was happy to see that two were within a stone’s throw of my home in Dubai. Destination set? Check. As I began my drive to The Qasr Al Sarab resort in the Liwa desert, my driver warned me it was a long journey so I should just relax, sit back and enjoy the ride. Although I believed him, in my mind I wondered how long could it really be when it was just outside Abu Dhabi? The journey was indeed long but it was a scenic route with changing landscapes and long stretches of desert. Despite the long stretches of sand, there are

a few things to see along the route if you travel tra before nightfall, including the car museum, which one may ma not know existed before taking the drive. It was a wonderful wa to start my mini holiday. way holida In my solitude, I had time to clear my head and de-stress before arriving at my destination. Ha Having arrived in the evening, just as dusk gave ga way wa to night, I was treated to a beautiful visage of a surreal quality when my car turned into the long entryway quality, entrywa of the Qasr Al Sarab, a 212-room citadel awash in amber lighting from the lamps lighting the path along the way. wa The resort, opened by the Anantara Group last NovemNo ber is located on the fringe of the Empty Quarter, ber, er an er, endless sea of sloping sand across the southern part of the Arabian desert, with dunes extending as far as Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Greeted by an efficient and friendly staff, staff I was

whisked away to the check-in check area, given a refreshing welcome drink and cool scented towel. Ah. There was a slight hiccup in the check-in check process with the wrong room appointment but it was soon cleared up and I was delivered to my one bedroom villa door. door Upon entering the villa, one is taken in by the sheer size of it and the beauty of the private plunge pool, garden and the desert dunes just beyond them. The sounds of the night were in full swing, as crickets chirped and winds blew creating pleasant ripples in the pool’s water. er er. The bedroom offered off the inhabitant two closets (surely a woman designed this), a king-sized bed built of sturdy wood and just the right mattress density that begged for a siesta to be had, and access to the plunge pool, lounging deck and gardens. The bathroom was every woman’s dream, with two large dual sinks (clearly a his and hers divide), roomy shower, shower and a massive soaksoak

ing tube roomy enough for two but the perfect floatation tank for one. The living room, dining room and small stand-alone kitchen, were all well appointed rooms with the cosy comforts of a home. The one bedroom villa is perfect for a small family, family romantic for two and completely sumptuous for a party of one. The resort and its offerings off are a wonderful blend of old-world charm meets modern day da luxuries, a combination hard to beat. Morning came quickly (or perhaps slumber slowly) but it was off to start the day’s da adventure, with an early morning dune drive. The drives are one of the most popular excursions of the resort, where you get to test your inner resolve and nausea level against the sands of time. A 4x4 takes the guests out and tackles the sand dunes navigating na turns, various dune sizes, salt flats, vegetation, small creatures and the like. There are two types of drives, hard and soft. Translation? Hard being the more daring take to the dunes approach, becoming airborne at certain intervals and tackling very sharp inclines; a soft drive is a more calm ride with some thrills but your buns and back will not suffer suff quite as much. A note of caution: it is best not to eat prior to either drive as one may ma feel queasy or worse during the course of the ride. For those feeling especially motivated and

not minding the early morning hour, hour there is the 5am desert walk. Here, guests get to be one with nature on a guided walk across the sand dunes. The walk allows you to see up close and personal the vegetation, the animals, the varying sand colours and the difference diff underfoot of the varying sand densities. The camel trek across the dunes is another popular excursion at Qasr Al Sarab, where from the back of your camel, one is perfectly situated

to take in the desert valley views and sunsets. Thefirststepastheysay sa isaloo-looorinthiscase say a lurch forward, as camels get up from the back legs first then front. The instructions to hold on tightly as the camel rises should be heeded or you risk falling off with sand everywhere. The mile-long jewel of the desert also offers off tennis, archery, archery a game room for teens, baby sitting for wee ones, a state-of-the-art e-of e-of-the-art work workout room, three different diff restaurants, buggy service to and from anywhere on the resort grounds, and a helicopter service on stand by for medical emergencies.
