2014 was a banner year for us as far as Polled genetics go! We had a nice number of Polled calves from some of our best cows and best cow families. We also had a couple of really nice Polled 2-year-olds that went VG and are developing very nicely.
Taking the “Highlight of the Year� award was #4934 who calved at 2-07 and made over 44,000lbs. of milk in 305days. She is a Polled Significant daughter out of the Rudy Missy family. We feel extremely blessed to be able to work with some really nice Polled animals and want to thank everyone who has helped us along the way!

Ted Parker-Promoting Polled on Social Media Social media has quickly become the #1 source for information around the world. It has also become a great way to promote Polled! Ted Parker of Gridley, Illinois is a #PolledPromoter by sharing his passion for Polled. ly, folks like Bryan Quanbury saw some of my early attempts in social media to make contacts and become part of the conversation. He and Roy MacGregor were very encouraging and took time with me. This leads to a lot easier introductions when you finally meet these folks in person at World Dairy Expo or other dairy events. Another possibly overlooked benefit is seeing pictures of cattle in their working clothes versus the polished pictures that magazines provided prior. That kind of honest marketing is really impressive and I see it becoming more and more utilized. #PolledPlace: What are some challenges you face using social media? Parker: I haven’t faced much yet, but I can’t rule them out as I go from “apprentice” to my first attempts to market cattle with my “CHARTED ACRES” prefix. I am counting on more of the great advice and teachings I have gotten so far in this process to help me through. #PolledPlace: What advice would you give to someone looking to start promoting with social media? Parker: Be yourself! I know it sounds cliché. Don’t delay as things seem to be moving faster and faster - learning can happen on the job so to speak. Throw unique things out there as I am probably not the only one looking for something “different.” Ask questions of folks you might have thought “untouchable” because of their success or standing in the industry. I continue to be amazed at who I have had conversations with. #PolledPlace: How do you increase and maintain your social media following? Parker: I honestly haven’t given this much thought yet as I am just pursuing this like one long, exciting conversation. I also think I will probably fill some niche type of market someday and having a huge number of followers won’t matter, just quality, like minded souls. #PolledPlace What makes your social media posts unique? Parker: I don’t know if they are at this point, but I do try to stay positive and not demean someone else’s opinions, even in debate.

Nathan Elzinga My name is Nathan Elzinga. My wife Jenny and our four kids are partners with my dad Dan Elzinga and my brother Paul Elzinga. My dad and mom (Sharon) bought the farm (then milking 60 Holsteins) in the 1970s. My dad has been AI breeding and testing milk since 1976. Prior to the year 2000, he began registering our cows and youngstock. His breeding philosophy was using good high production net merit bulls somewhat randomly on matings. After coming back from Michigan State in 2006, I began selecting bulls and doing the matings. At the same time we enrolled in Holstein Complete and began scoring cows and reporting records through Tri-Star. My philosophy on breeding is ever evolving, but I maintained my emphasis on production traits through bull selection and began corrective mating selecting for 2-3 phenotype traits. Now we are genomic testing all of our females and a few males that we save for breeding stock. We use our genomic information for mating now and we use about 80% genomic sampled bulls for selection. Currently our farm, Daybreak Dairy, LLC is milking 220 Registered Holsteins in Zeeland, Michigan. Our rolling herd average is 31,321M 1161F 960P. Our official BAA is 103.1. Our

herd TPI is 1906. Currently 5% of our cows are Polled and 19% of our heifers are Polled. Our age at first calving is 20 months and we sell extra fresh cows every year. I started selecting my first Polled bulls in 2009 when the first genomic bulls appeared on the scene. I became interested in Polled genetics after reading about the trait in an article somewhere and then began seeing young Polled bulls that met or were close to my selection criteria. In my breeding program I realized I could begin to introduce the trait in my herd and still make significant genetic gains on individual matings. Being a dominant trait, moving forward retaining the Polled influence in my herd would get easier being able to select new Polled families as they became available or using my females to alter other non-Polled families. While I might not be the first one to have an entirely Polled herd, I am slowly heading that direction and enjoy not dehorning those calves that are Polled while adding some new blood to my herd. Breeding Polled has also added another dimension to marketing my genetics. Some of the first Polled bulls I used were Wind-D-Acres Snowball P and Icicle P, Sandy-Valley Seven P, WindD-Acres Frank P, Venture Transformer P and Kerndtway Eliminator P. I used Polled bulls where the corrective mating was appropriate. Some of my favorite Polled cow results are: • Daybreak Snowball-P 2507 4-01 VG-86 +1751GTPI (Snowball P x River x Teamster) • Daybreak Icicle-P 2468 4-03 VG-86 +1794GTPI (Icicle P x Marion x Sir) • Daybreak Transformer P 2822 fresh not scored +1866GTPI (Transformer P x Million x AltaLouman) Each of these are big improvements over their parents. I think as time goes on and Polled genetics gain popularity there are going to be more and more new bulls available and I look forward to breeding a portion of my herd to them, and at the same time using my Polled females to start new family lines from elite non-Polled bulls.

Staci Sexton Schoene Kuh Dairy is located in Millville, Minnesota. I started farming with my parents in 2011 and started my own herd in 2012 with 24 milking and have worked up to my current herd of 40 milking cows of Holsteins, Jerseys and Red & White Holsteins. The farm has been in the family for over 150 years, all together my parents and I milk 120 cows and run 350 acres of corn, alfalfa and oats. My parents and I work together doing the chores and field work. We milk in a double 8 herringbone parlor with sand bedded freestalls. My first polled animal was born in 2011. My parents had been breeding their Red & Whites to Lawn Boy-P for a few years since he had become available and I decided to breed my jersey to a Polled bull. I have been breeding for Polled since then and since I started my own herd. I currently have close to 10% of my milking herd Polled and 25% of my youngstock Polled and I am breeding many of my animals to Polled. My parents are also breeding their animals to Polled. My interest in Polled started when I began working with Bob Eustice of Hartford Holsteins and breeding Polled animals inspired me more to work towards a whole Polled herd. Continued on page 12

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED
Polled daughters from the Eclipse-P cow. In the Holsteins, I have Polled animals out of Colt-P-Red, Ladd-P-Red, Earnhardt-P, Relief-P, Lawn Boy-PRed, Special Effect-P-Red, Hybrid-PRed and Dual-PP-Red. Currently I am using Socrates-P, Corporal-P-Red, Relief-P-Red, Roy-P-Red, Sid-PP, Long-P, Ohio Style-P and Parker-P. I try to watch pedigrees to try and get different families of Polled. I see more and more Polled bulls coming out and it is exciting to see the interest in Polled increase. Watching the pedigrees and trying keep a variety of Polled family lines in the available Polled bulls will be important. I would like to see a few more outcross Polled bulls available and more bulls that are Polled and not have red carrier or some Lawn Boy-P. I would also like to see more variety. Many Polled bulls are from the same family line and from the same Polled bulls. There are even some with multiple family lines of polled bulls in them when trying to

My goal is to have over 50% of my herd Polled in the next few years. I do breed a few of my higher end Polled ones to other Polled bulls to try to get a Homozygous Polled animal. My goal is to get Polled cattle, then breed a few generations away from that specific bull and get more outcross animals before breeding back to Polled to try for Homozygous Polled. My first Polled animal was a Polled Jersey out of Eclipse-P. She currently is a VG-89 3 year old cow and was just flushed to Nikon-P. In my Holsteins, I have a few different family lines I am working with but the one I am most excited with is a Polled Earnhardt-P out of Bowser that goes back to Sully Shottle May. I have more Red & White Holsteins that are also Polled and have passed it on a few generations already. Currently in the Jerseys, I have Polled Eclipse-P and Critic-P animals and
get Homozygous Polled. I am hoping as more Polled animals are available some will be a few generations bred away from those original Polled bulls to watch for inbreeding. Polled will be very important in my herd. I plan to get close to 50% polled in my herd in a few years and after that work towards becoming 100% polled. Having Polled animals is not only fun and exciting for me to work with and breed for, but also a great management tool for my herd. It saves me time on dehorning and keeps the calves from having to deal with getting dehorned.

Polled Testing
There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED. Social media has a way of bringing a show to life as the photos and results start streaming in our Facebook news feeds and Twitter updates. Thanks to the coverage of The Bullvine and Cowsmopolitan, Polled enthusiasts were able to see the impact that Tiger-Lily Ladd P-Red and Sandy-Valley Chipper P were making at the 2014 Royal Winter Fair. Ladd P was named the Premier Sire of the heifer show and also sired the winning Junior Yearling and Junior Champion, Roylier Ladd Lizianne P-Red (right). Lizianne P-Red is also the “Cover Girl” of the January/February #PolledPlace! Thank you to The Bullvine for providing the photo! Polled enthusiasts were quite pleased with the results of the 2014 Royal Winter Fair Red Holstein Show and hopefully other breeders were impressed as well! We are looking forward to seeing more Polled animals in the show ring in 2015 - not just Red & White Holsteins, but other breeds as well!

Roylier Ladd Lizianne P-Red, owned by Britney & Megan Hill, Bristol, Vermont, was named Junior Champion of the 2014 Royal Winter Fair Red Holstein Show
Roylier Ladd Lizianne P-Red was purchased at the 2014 Vente Supreme Sale in November by Britney & Megan Hill of Four-Hills Farm in Bristol, Vermont. She was consigned by Roylier & Syljack. Do you remember the YouTube video of the fancy Red & White heifer set to the music of Centuries by Fall Out Boy? This was a fitting song...especially now after being named Junior Champion! Britney Hill recalls, “We saw a video of her on Facebook and we bought her over the phone. She was 2nd at Quebec and Pierre Boulet and Keven Moffet took her to the Royal for us and showed her.” DairyBullsOnline shared this video on their Facebook page after she was named champion with the following caption: “The music on this video is a fitting tribute to the first #Polled Junior Champion at the Royal Winter Fair - Roylier Ladd Lizianne P-Red from #Roylier Farms and #Syljack now owned by #FourHillsFarms. Lizianne P-Red, sired by Tiger-Lily Ladd P-Red, is a daughter of Roylier Secure Lizon-Red who was scored GP as a 2-year-old. The next dam is Roylier Elayo Lizi-Red VG-85 VG-MS, then Maheux Blizzard Lison-Red EX-90. Britney Hill shares with us an update and future plans with Lizianne P-Red: “She’s bred to Armani and due in March and we plan to IVF her after she calves. I ended last year sharing Polled with the genetics class at Northeast Iowa Community College and with Holstein breeders from Meeker County, Minnesota as well as being a finalist for the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Young Farmer & Agriculturist Excellence in Agriculture contest where I also shared the importance of Polled and what I do to promote Polled in the dairy industry.
