A Focus on International POLLED CANADA Feederline Emma Roszell Wainfleet, Ontario
We have an 85-cow packbarn with a double 8 parabone parlour that we built in 2010. My family's prefix is Feederlane, while my prefix is Feederline. I got my own prefix 3 years ago from my mother when the Junior All Ontario Show Program started. My mom primarily runs the farm and my 2 brothers and I help her with the day-to-day activities. My grandfather is still very active on the farm as well, he makes feed every morning. In 2016, we received a Master Breeder shield, a life-long dream of my grandfather's. We currently have a rolling herd BCA of 241-261-241. I started purchasing cows about 5 years ago. My first off farm purchase was Keylas Fever Danelle who went on to be scored 87 points as a 2-year-old. Other memorable purchases include Mottle Advance Miley who was Honorable Mention Champion at the Junior All Ontario Show in Ilderton, Ontario last year and Vogue Loyola Red Mistress, who was my 2017 4-H project and who I own with CDX.
Champion showman. Mistress placed 2nd in the senior calf class. At Ancaster Fair, I was 2nd intermediate showman and Reserve Champion showman. Mistress placed 7th in the senior calf class. At Norfolk Fair, I was 1st intermediate showman and Grand Champion showman. We also competed at the TD Classic. Ideally, I would like to continue to increase the polled genetics in our herd by breeding already polled animals, such as Red Mistress, to high type polled bulls. CDX and I are continuing the polled genetics in Mistress by breeding her to Swissbec Jackpot PP-Red. I hope to continue to breed her and her offspring to polled to expand polled genetics in our herd. I hope to continue her red, polled line. In the future, I would like to see more high type and red polled bulls available. These type of bulls would better suit my herd's needs. There is a lack of polled bull availability, especially red polled bulls. I would love the opportunity to expand my polled genetics in my herd, however, I am not willing to comprise type and milk to do so. Therefore, I have had to actively search for suitable polled bulls to breed Red Mistress to. With advice from Vogue Cattle, we decided to breed Red Mistress to Jackpot. Ideally, as polled genetics become more popular, there will be an increase in the availability of polled bulls so I can continue to expand their genetics in my herd.
Vogue Loyola Red Mistress is my first polled animal. In June 2017, I saw that CDX was offering a special red calf named Vogue Loyola Red Mistress to be used by a 4-H member for their 2017 4-H project. To be considered, I had to do a short write-up about my passion for the dairy industry, 4-H and my past successes in the show ring. I was selected as one of the final candidates and was interviewed by Jordan Underhill at CDX. I also had the opportunity to see Mistress in person. They later contacted me to inform me that I had won the opportunity to show Mistress this year. We had a very successful show season together. At Paris Fair, I was 1st intermediate showman and Grand Champion showman. Mistress placed 3rd in the senior calf class. At West Niagara Fair, I was 1st intermediate showman and Mistress placed 4th in the senior calf class. At the Niagara Regional Exhibition, I was 1st senior showman and Grand

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED POLLED JERSEYS Courtney Farms Logan Courtney Chouteau, Oklahoma
Courtney Farms was established in 1933 by my great grandparents in Chouteau, Oklahoma as a small herd of Ayrshire cows. The farm has changed a lot in the following years to our current size with a large commercial beef operation, hogs and a 70-cow dairy. The dairy was started back up in 2012 with a small herd of registered Jersey cows. In 2017, we built a robot barn with capacity for 120 cows. The herd is on a mixed pasture/dry lot system on light TMR. We are a type driven herd with a focus on pushing production and high components. We have been interested in adding polled cattle for some time for the obvious reason of increased animal welfare of not needing to stress calves with dehorning. Our goal with polled genetics is to focus on breeding polled cows that are
high type with excellent udders. We acquired our first polled cows from Covington Jerseys in Iowa. Our polled cows include: Covington Foxtot Gracie-P with five VG or EX dams and the 5th dam is the former world fat record holder Golden MBSB of Twin Haven EX-94, Covington Gold Gracie-P sired by Covington Milad Gold-P with 3 EX dams, Covington Foxtot Dana-P sired by Foxtot with four EX dams. All of our polled cows are two year olds and will be scored at the end of the month! We are currently using Oliver-P and Diciple-P through out our herd and have pregnancies by Disciple-P out of our highest GJUI cow with AI interest from Select Sires. We are planning to do extensive IVF and conventional flushing with Oliver-P this year after seeing so many amazing Oliver-P daughters calving in everywhere. I do wish there was a wider selection of Polled bulls available within the Jersey Breed and more of a selection of bulls that are non JX or bracketed. I would like to see where the polled genetics take the breed in the future, especially with higher type bulls from elite cow families. As for my herd, I don't know that we will ever switch entirely to polled genetics, but they are here to stay and have proved themselves to be good productive cows that are a pleasure to work with!

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED. One copy of Polled-Celtic and 1 copy of Polled-Friesian molecular markers are present. All offspring will be polled.
