POLLED GENETICS - UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL FOR A BETTER FUTURE!

#PolledPanel

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to Wayne Worden for sharing his Polled story and views on the future of Polled Holsteins! POLLED HOLSTEINS Wormont Dairy Wayne Worden Cassville, New York Farm Background Wormont Dairy is a family-run Registered Holstein operation located in Cassville, New York (15 minutes south of Utica). Our farm is owned and managed by Chuck and VanesWayne Worden with Wormont Loyola Russ sa Worden, with sons PP-Red +2481GTPI that is headed to stud Wayne, Mark and Eric. Daughter Lindsey works for Holstein USA and helps on the farm in her free time. We milk around 275 cows and they are housed in a four-row freestall barn. Cows are milked twice a day in a Dairymaster swing parlor. We had a parlor fire in mid-January and are currently rebuilding, planning to be back operational by May. All calves and youngstock are housed at this location and we farm 700 acres of corn and alfalfa. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? We are really new to getting involved with Polled Holsteins. Polled hasn't really ever been part of our breeding goals, but we do think that it is going to be an important trait in the future, so that is what got us interested in starting. We purchased our first Polled heifer at the Cornell Fall Harvest Sale in October 2015 and have been primarily working with her since then. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? Similar to how we aim to breed the rest of the herd – trying to create a high TPI animal who is balanced, with no holes in her genomic profile. For our first Polled animal, we looked for a bull who complimented her strengths as well as improving on her weaknesses. We are really interested in trying to make Homozygous Polled animals, but will also go back and use the most elite TPI horned bulls who are a good match to improve overall genetic merit and hope to get a Heterozygous Polled animal. Getting red Polled animals is interesting, but not a major focus for us. We also give preference to bulls who are A2/A2. Who was your first Polled cow? We purchased Rollen-Ns S Shot Rina P-ET*RC at the Cornell Fall Harvest Sale in October 2015. She is a 2/2015 Supershot out of VG-87 Ms Koenen Lad Rea PP-Red-ET. Behind Rea PP is a VG-88 Advent x EX-90 Redman x EX-90 Golden-Oaks Perk Rae-Red-ET, who goes back to EX-97 C Glenridge Citation Roxy.

Wayne was at the sale not really intending to buy anything and Rina P stuck out with her strength of front end, hard topline and flat rump. After looking at her pedigree and seeing she was Polled, red carrier, and knowing we didn't have any animals like that in our current genetic program, he thought she would be a neat addition. She comes from a great proven cow family and is also A2/A2, so that was an interesting added bonus. After talking with the rest of the family, everyone agreed and we were lucky enough to come home with her. Rina P is +2337 GTPI with +44 protein, +45 fat, +572 milk, +4.8 PL, +2.2 DPR and +1.29 PTAT. What cow families are you breeding Polled into? What do you have for Polled animals? We flushed Rina P twice as a heifer to Zimmerview Wonka Loyola-P and have several calves coming by that mating this spring and summer. That's really the start of it for us. We already have four calves on the ground from that mating, two R&W Homozygous Polled bulls and two B&W heifers that are Polled (genetic test results should be back next week to see if they are PC or PP). Rina P calved in late February with her first natural calf, a heifer by Wa-Del Yoder Banderas-ET and we are excited about how she looks. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? The Loyola-P offspring are really our first Polled calves born on the farm and we are impressed with them. They really stick out with their good bone quality, correct conformation and are stylish. What Polled bulls are you currently using and what are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? We are really impressed with the uptick in quality and availability of Polled bulls, especially in the past year. Right now we are looking at purchasing a few different Polled bulls to use starting this summer. I think it will be important for Polled breeders to maintain diversity of pedigree as they work to breed high TPI bulls. Polled bulls are starting to become competitive with their horned counterparts on a TPI basis, but we need to have options that are acceptable from an inbreeding standpoint to use in our herd. What would you like to see available in the future? I would like to see more Homozygous Polled bulls with good production as well as type. Again, it's really important to try and keep diversity in pedigrees so they can be mated easily on a variety of cows. Where do you see the future of Polled in your breed? Within the next few years, there will be Polled Holsteins bulls that are competing right along with the best horned bulls in the rankings. Once that happens, that will really help take Polled to the next level so it's something that the majority of breeders will consider as an option. Additional comments. Getting involved with Polled has been a fun new twist to our breeding program and we look forward to getting more involved in the future!

Polled Testing #PolledPlatform There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. #PolledPlace

Celebrating Three Years of #PolledPlace! This issue marks three years of the #PolledPlace publication! Hard to believe that it was only a few short years ago that I was calling breeders sharing this new concept and today, we're celebrating three years. Thank you to the advertisers, #PolledPromoters and those that helped with articles over the past three years to make this dream come true! In my very first #PolledPlatform column, I shared this quote, "If your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough." Starting my own business promoting Polled was scary, but the support and encouragement that I have received has been incredible. Every issue seems to be connected to the next in some way. Several breeders that advertised in the very first #PolledPlace continue as contract advertisers today. Those breeders that helped with some of the first articles continue to enhance their Polled breeding programs by leaps and bounds and many of their prefixes are being used in today's Polled matings. Select Sires, a contract advertiser from the beginning, advertised Colt P-Red in the very first issue. Today, sons and grand-sons of Colt P-RED are topping the #PolledPlacings lists. Last year, they advertised LoyolaP*RC and in this issue, his Red Homozygous Polled son Russ PP-Red is included in the #PolledPanel article. Sundae on the Farm - June 25, 2017 Thank you to #PolledPromoter Adam Faust for the invitation to promote Polled at the Calumet County Sundae on the Farm hosted by Faust Farms! I'm looking forward to sharing what Polled is and how it works. Let me know if you're looking for someone to share Polled at your events and we can certainly make that happen. #PolledPlace Tag Sale - May 12 & 13, 2017 The 3rd #PolledPlace Tag Sale that will be held with the Bouquet of Breeds II Tag Sale on May 12 & 13, 2017 at Manannah Valley in Eden Valley, Minnesota.
