Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to these breeders for sharing their Polled story and views on the future of Polled in their respective breeds! POLLED JERSEYS Covington Jerseys Leon, Iowa, USA Covington Jerseys is a family dairy owned and operated by my parents, Mike and Janice Covington, and I (Tim). My wife, Stephanie, and boys, Greyden, Brenden and Camden are also involved to some extent. We are located at Leon, Iowa. Our herd is made up of 100% registered Jerseys and consists of 75 Tim, Stephanie, Greyden, Brenden cows and 85 heifers. & Camden Covington with Sunset We used a couple Canyon Centurion L Maid 2-ET of polled bulls several years ago, but never made it much of an emphasis until more recently. In 2010, we used Eclipse-P for a flush and were really pleased with the polled calves that resulted from that. We like the way that the polled calves are more trouble-free and not having to dehorn makes for one less unpleasant job to do. We have always bred for cows that will score Excellent as mature cows, have high components and produce enough milk to make them profitable. In recent years, we have added polled and A2A2 to our breeding goals. The cow that we flushed to Eclipse-P in 2010 was Sunset Canyon Centurion L Maid 2-ET. We ended up with only two calves from that flush - both bulls and both polled. Covington Milad-P-ET went to Semex and Covington Milestone-PET was used here at the farm. Both bulls were used heavily and produced quite a few polled daughters. We are milking several daughters of Covington Milad-P and Covington Milestone-P with more to calve this summer and fall. We have a few Dutch Hollow Oliver-P heifers. The oldest Oliver-P's will calve this fall. We have pregnancies by Oliver-P, Hometown Catapult-P, Covington Milad Tristram-P, Covington Milad Jackson-P and Covington Milad Gold-P. Tristram-P, Jackson-P, and Gold-P will continue to see some use this year. We plan to use our new homozygous bulls, Multi-Rose Credibull Comet-PP and TOG Zorro-PPET quite heavily as well. The availability of polled Jersey bulls has come a long way in recent years. We still don't have a large selection, but I think the selection will continue to expand. I hope to see more homozygous polled bulls available in the future, especially ones that are also A2A2. I feel that there will be significant demand for quality bulls that are homozygous for those traits, but as of yet, there haven't been any bulls to meet that demand. That is why we acquired Comet-PP and Zorro-PP and hope to make semen available in the near future. Polled is on the rise in the Jersey breed. There are quite #PolledPlace a12few polled bulls that have been used heavily across the
country and around the world. Once homozygous polled Jerseys start to become more common, I think we will see it really start to "snowball." POLLED HOLSTEINS Hershey-View Farm - W. Ray & Jenifer K. Hershey Bethel, Pennsylvania, USA
Hershey-View Farm is located in beautiful western Berks County Pennsylvania. My husband Ray and I (Jenifer) purchased the 150 acre farm and dairy from his parents in 2000. When we took over the 109 milking Holstein cows and the young stock, there were no polled or red and white animals on the farm. That number has increased over the years to a total of 370 milking cows and 323 heifers, approximately 1/3 of the herd either polled or red and white. Our rolling herd average is 27,408m 1011f 801p with a somatic cell count of 85,000. All cattle on the farm are registered using Holstein EasyID and we are on the Holstein Complete program. I had an interest in the genetics side of the business and took over the breeding program shortly after we bought our cows. I slowly built on the existing pedigrees using good proven bulls and young sires from deep pedigreed cow families. When Aggravation Lawn Boy P-Red became available as a young sire from Select Sires, I decided to use him. He had what I considered at the time tremendous qualities...solid type, milk, red genetics and he happened to be polled. We started to have heifer calves born that were polled. Their temperaments are fantastic and those Lawn Boy P daughters are 6 and 7 years old today and producing great volumes of milk for us, as well as giving us beautiful polled calves! They have good feet and legs and he improved udders for us. All of those qualities are so important on a commercial dairy. Honestly the motivation and inspiration to breed our cows to polled genetics came from the polled cows themselves. We saw how beneficial they were to our diary operation and it was then that I became passionate about polled cattle. And the bottom line with polled cattle is that you don’t have to dehorn them! The next polled bull that influenced our herd was Burket-Falls Significant-P. He had an outcross pedigree to use on the Lawn Boy bloodlines and we are always looking to increase milk production records. I called John Burket and asked him about his bull's pedigree and we had a conversation about breeding polled dairy cattle and the cow family that Signif-P came from. I used this Polled bull on many of the cows in our herd with great success. Our Polled cattle are continued on page 13

continued from page 12 good looking cows, making good production records, and they walk around our freestalls on good feet and legs with great udders! That’s our breeding goal/philosophy in a nutshell; produce top quality milk with top quality cows. The polled genetics we've used helped us achieve this goal. I like variety in Holstein genetics. It makes life interesting. By using the polled bulls today, we can bring in a wide variety of pedigrees into play allowing us to continue to be progressive dairy breeders. The polled bulls we are currently using are Cashflow-P-Red, Soccer-P-Red, Runner-P-Red, Bozeman-P and Addiction-P-Red. We have also used Sid PP and Golden PP. It was quite exciting to see the homozygous gene in action! We used Fix-PP, Harpoon-P and Homerun-P. Two polled Harpoon-P heifer calves were just born on the farm. I was interested in using polled bulls after using Lawn Boy P. Trying to find genetics was difficult years ago. Some thought that polled bulls were just a passing phase. That has proven to be untrue! Now the demand for polled genetics seems higher than ever. There are high genomic polled bulls, high milk polled bulls and polled bulls from elite cow families. I am pleased that Holstein breeders have recently been developing various polled genetics so that all types of dairies can take advantage of it. I would like to thank Stephanie Stout for allowing me space in the #PolledPlace magazine. I am sure she will continue to reach out and educate folks that the polled Holstein cow is a cow for future generations. We need to continue to get the word out to all dairy farmers in the United States about the value of polled genetics. I will continue to consign polled cows and heifers to local sales, sell them privately and of course continue to use polled bulls on a portion of the cows in our herd!

There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present.
