Come visit us this summer, June 29, during the AJCA-NAJ Annual Meeting Farm Tour. Jay is the third generation of Herron to breed Jerseys at Nature View Farm in Salem Ohio. His grandfather Carl E. Herron purchased this 100 acre farm in 1945 and immediately began filling the barn with Jerseys. Sourcing genetics from select herds from across the country, his herd was nationally known and became the foundation for the herd at Nature View Farms. Jay's Jersey roots actually go back five generations. His maternal great-great grandfather Herbert Zimmerman, great grandfather Willis Zimmerman, grandfather James Zimmerman, and mother Judith (Zimmerman) Herron also milked Jerseys at their farm in Salem. Jay graduated from Ohio State University in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in dairy science and joined the family dairy farm that year. In 2007 Jay made the goal to create a 100% polled Jersey herd by building on his grandfather's genetics. In 2010, Jay created polledjerseys.com to help promote using polled sires to Jersey breeders around the world. Currently Nature View Farm is milking 135 registered Jerseys and farms 1600 acres. 75% of the herd is now polled with at least 30 head being homozygous. Jay, his wife Pam, sons Jarod and Von, as well as his brother Paul and father Glen work together in this all family run operation.

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED
Holt Creek Jerseys - Ben Gotschall - Raymond, Nebraska I own and operate Holt Creek Jerseys, an enterprise I began when I was 10 years old on my family's ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills. I built my herd from the only Jersey in my father's Holstein herd, and sustained this throughout high school and college. As a senior in high school, I had the highest Jersey rolling herd average in the state with 14 cows. After graduate school, I was offered a job as herdsman at Branched Oak Farm, a small farmstead creamery that processed cheese near Raymond, Nebraska. Doug and Krista Dittman, the owners of Branched Oak, allowed me to bring my small herd and manage it with their own, which enabled me to continue to grow my herd and gave them the increased production they needed to expand into the growing Grassfed, Organic, direct-to-consumer market of the Lincoln and Omaha area. I worked as herdsman there until 2016 when I leased their cows, the farm and facilities, where I continue to operate as Davey Road Ranch. We direct-market raw milk through on-farm sales and produce pasteurized bottled milk, cream, butter and cheese for local retail and wholesale markets, mainly restaurants in Lincoln and Omaha. My wife and I are the main labor force, and we also employ a part-time cheese maker and a part-time milker. We milk 30 cows on grass and stored forage, twice a day, year-round, with dual season (spring and fall) calving. We raise all our own replacement females and breeding bulls on nurse cows, on pasture, with no confinement or indoor housing. I have been actively breeding for Polled since 2013. I was motivated by what I saw as the increasing demand for Polled cattle and genetics. Since part of the income stream for the farm is genetics, it made sense to pursue a valuable trait that customers wanted. We also became an Animal Welfare Approvedfarm at that time, so using Polled genetics to avoid disbudding and dehorning was a logical choice. Polled is a desirable trait, but it is only one trait, and I avoid single-trait selection. I try to breed the type of cattle I want first and foremost, which is to say cows that can harvest their own forage, conceive and maintain a pregnancy, and produce a calf and high-quality milk without the aid of grain or expensive supplements. The Polled genetics I have used are from herds that I have personally visited, from trustworthy breeders with similar goals and breeding philosophies. At this point we are mainly using our own home-raised bulls from the top-performing, most long-lived cows in our herd to produce offspring that are well-suited to the environment and management program in which they will grow up and produce. The first Polled cow I had was a daughter of Fair Weather Opportunity-P that I bought as a bred heifer at the Sioux Empire dairy sale in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, when I was

12 years old. A significant portion of our herd traces back to the New Zealand sire Beledene Dukes Landy, so most of our efforts are focused on maintaining the influence of that sire through line breeding, while at the same time infusing and sustaining the polled trait. At this time, I would estimate that about 25% of the milking herd and about 75% of the young stock is Polled. Of the five herd bulls we are currently using, four are Polled with one of those being Homozygous Polled. The outside bulls that we have used to introduce the Polled trait are Holterholm Lieutenant-P, bred by Ron Holter in Maryland, Elanels Sun Power-PP, bred by Eli Hilty in Ohio, and Akhenaton of Netherhall, bred by Greg Palen in Michigan. We have used those bulls on our best females to produce our own Polled sires, which we use natural-service on the rest of the herd. Currently I am using Branched Oak Sunpower Alvin-PP, The Dubliner of Holt Creek-P, Branched Oak Bozeman-P, and Holt Creek LT Krystoff-P, all natural service, and Geneologist of Netherhall-PP via artificial insemination. The availability of Polled bulls, especially in the mainstream market, is higher than I have ever seen since I began breeding Jerseys 28 years ago. While I believe this is a good thing, and I think the upward trajectory will continue into the foreseeable future, I am wary of single-trait selection. Polled genetics are "trending," and for that reason, those who are distributing Polled genetics have a responsibility to select the highest-quality bulls from the highest-quality females, and those who are using Polled bulls deserve to have the merits of those bulls proven through the practical performance of their offspring. With that said, I think more owners of high-performing horned females should consider the benefits of using Polled bulls on those cows in order to increase the diversity of the Polled gene pool. Because I am a 100% Grass-fed producer, I would like to see a performance program that compares Grassfed dairy cattle to their peers. There is no way a 100% grassfed cow (or herd) will ever compete with a high-input cow in terms of production volume, and grass-fed producers need a way to evaluate their cattle and select genetics capable of improving their herd's performance. There is a growing demand for milk produced by grassfed cows, and a very real need for the genetics of those cows to improve and adapt to the challenges of grass-fed management systems. More of a focus on milk quality, and by extension, food quality, would benefit the dairy farmer of the future. Milk quality traits such as A2 Beta Casein, BB Kappa Casein, and BB Beta Lactoglobulin for cheese yield can enhance the marketability of milk, so polled bulls that can produce those milk quality traits should be developed. continued on page 8

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED.
