Polled Reflections from the "Front Porch"
Sitting here watching a few heifers grazing in the pasture across the driveway, my mind went back to the day our first POLLED heifer was born...it was September of 2011. At the time, we thought the "POLLED THING" was a neat idea, but it wasn't until a year or so later that we actually decided to make it part of our breeding program. And now...we are milking around 15 POLLED cows and nearly half of our heifers are POLLED also! So today you could say that we are excited and are enjoying the "POLLED VIEW" from the porch swing!

Thank you to these breeders for sharing their Polled story and views on the future of Polled in their respective breeds! POLLED MILKING SHORTHORNS Circle B Milking Shorthorns Caledonia, Illinois
Matt & Kayla Borchardt Our family farm is located in Caledonia, Illinois. Family Af-Ayr Farm is owned by my parents Gregg and Pat Borchardt and oldest brother Luke, but our entire family does their part to keep it running smoothly. This is where all of the cattle for Circle B Milking Shorthorns are housed. I have been breeding for Polled for three years now. I was inspired by my first surprise Polled heifer calf out of a bred heifer I had bought not knowing she was Polled. I would say my philosophy for breeding Polled is to breed for type and production with an emphasis on Polled cattle. I started using Polled bulls on a Polled cow I had bought by the name of Trulea Jack Lotto-P. The Polled Milking Shorthorn bulls I am currently using include Abner-P and Alrite-P and these are the only Polled bulls represented in the herd at this time. I think the availability of Polled bulls in the Milking Shorthorn breed is very limited. In the future I would like to see more Polled bulls available from deep pedigrees of excellent cows with production records over 20,000 lbs of milk. I see the future of Polled in Milking shorthorns one day becoming the norm for every breeder, but it is going to take time and better bulls to do so. POLLED HOLSTEINS Hinz Farm, LLC Pickett, Wisconsin Dan Hinz I am a 4th generation dairy farmer. I am farming with my parents and my wife Stephanie, and our 2 kids in Pickett, Wisconsin with 250 cows. We have 2 full time employees and 3 part time employees that handle the daily tasks. I started breeding for Polled

about 3 years ago. Once I had a couple Polled calves on the ground, I started to like what I saw and started using more and more. Growing up, I always thought dehorning calves was one task I did not like helping with. Now that I am into Polled, it is addicting. It has nice to have the dehorning process done before they are born and have naturally Polled cattle. I would like to have a majority of the herd Polled in the next few years. As I look back on the traditional dehorning process with an electric dehorner, I think about how much stress the calf went through at that time. Now, what if that process is eliminated creating a non-stressful event? I would think the calf would continue its growth at a pace where it has no setbacks in its growth curve. To me, this would make for a healthier calf that could have higher potential that a calf that was horned. I do not have a particular family that I am trying to breed Polled into. I mainly have a commercial herd and am trying to incorporate Polled into all the animals. I only have 6 Polled cows. Currently I have some Tyler-P, Dancer-P, Dolo P and Dip-Red P in the milking herd. Soon I will have some Dual PP daughters entering the milking herd. Currently our tank only has Polled bulls in it. Current bulls in the tank include 300 PP, Blueprint PP, Ocean PP, Oh Boy PP, Bristol PP, Eraser P, Ohio Style-P, Outline P, Red Nick P, Gabir P, Dollars P, Powerball P, Jax P and Milford. Once you sit down and start looking, there are a lot of Polled bulls out there and the numbers keep increasing. DairyBullsOnline.com has a lot of Polled bulls, but there are Polled bulls everywhere. When new high net merit or GTPI bulls are released, I try to use them in the herd as soon as I can. Polled genetics are catching up to their horned counter parts. Many breeders are looking to create Polled outcrosses and you will continue to see more and more Polled. I like Red and White cattle, once I learned about the Variant Red bulls, I started using a couple of them about a year ago. I have a 5 Variant Red calves on the ground. In the future, I would like to see a Homozygous Polled Variant Red bull. Consumer demands are helping drive the Polled market. As more and more consumers see how easy it is to breed for Polled, they are going to demand more products from Polled cattle. I would encourage fellow dairy farmers to try using a few Polled bulls in their herd. I would like to see the Holstein breed get to the point where the whole breed switches to using Polled bulls in the sire line-ups and the dairy cow of the future will be Polled. In today’s society, we have to be very conscious of how we handle and treat our cattle. Having a dairy farm on the edge of town and in sight of many people driving by every day, I have become very proactive in making sure that we are treating our cattle properly. I feel I am always being watched. The dairy cows and calves are my livelihood and I want to make sure they are getting the best care they can all the time, breeding for Polled should be part of this. I can’t wait for the day when the dehorner will be a dust collector sitting on the shelf. continued on page 12

Bosside Holsteins is located in Colby, Wisconsin. We built a new tie-stall barn in 2012. Currently we milk 40 cows and have 100 head total. Tineke and I farm together with part-time help for feeding and relief milking. We started breeding for Polled 10 years ago after a tour to the breeders at Hickorymea and Burket-Falls in Pennsylvania where we bought a Red & White Polled bull that left us some quality Polled cows. We focus mainly on Red and Polled and we try to breed for Homozygous Polled. The first cow family that we started breeding Polled into was the Raven cow family. We bought a Red Advent from that family and flushed her to Lawn Boy P-Red. The Polled sires in our herd today include Lawn Boy P-Red, Satchel P and Golden PP-Red. Our Golden PP daughters will be calving soon and they have a lot of strength and we hope they will milk enough. We have calves coming by Chad P, Relief P-Red and Champ P. For Polled bulls, we are currently using Apoll P-Red, Label P-Red and Bosside 300 PP. As far as the availability of Polled bulls, the list of Red Homozygous Polled bulls is still very short so maybe that gives us a small chance to add a bull to that list. The Holstein breed and especially large dairy farms are waiting for a Homozygous Polled bull with solid production, type and health traits only slightly behind the horned bulls. Polled has a very good future! More and more consumers are looking for products from healthy animals raised with the least amount of stress. For us it is interesting that our Amish customers are also are looking for a bull that is Polled and along with a solid set of genomic numbers. They are not interested in dehorning. As we look forward to the future of our breeding program, we stick with solid cow families like Apple and Raven. We also like our Massey daughters more and more and have a grand-daughter of Crimson due this fall she is polled and Red Carrier.
At Manannah-Valley, we milk around 30 cows. Most are owned by John & Julie and John's parents, Bernie & Aggie. Some are also owned by our kids and grand-kids as well as some partnership animals and we house a few for friends. We milk mainly Red & White and Black & White Holsteins with a few Milking Shorthorns and a Brown Swiss. Polled has always interested me, but we started breeding for Polled when different friends of ours were also working with Polled. We have a BAA at almost 108, so our breeding philosophy for Polled is that we want to keep the type without the horns. All animals owned by John & Julie and Bernie & Aggie at this time are bred Polled, many are bred to Homozygous Polled. The first cow family that we started adding Polled into was Mi-Ro-Ze Potter Pebbles-ET-RC EX-90-2E. We bought her as a cow about 5 years ago in a partnership with Dennis Gransee. We are currently working with her grand-daughter, a Red Homozygous Polled Addiction P that we own with Stephanie Stout. We have Polled daughters by Ladd P, Proxy PP, Long P, Lawn Boy P, Colt 45 P and Addiction P. Currently, we are using Opportunity PP, Lets Deal P, Detail PP, 241 PP, Champ P, Ladd P, Relief P, Golden PP and Dave P. DairyBullsOnline.com has raised the bar in the Polled world. This made other studs take notice and begin looking for more Polled genetics. I like the online buying concept, but feel many farmers still like the person to person contact of a sales rep. In the future, I would like to see more PP bulls in lineups. Opportunity is PP, but is registered as P. This is a little misleading and hard to keep up with due to having to request changes to the name after receiving PP test results. The more farmers understand Polled and how fast it becomes a reality on their farm, the more that it will be used. Growing up about 75 miles north of the Schultz's and being on a board with John Burket of Burket-Falls, I considered these families Polled Pioneers. Gary Mayhew was also a push in the right direction. #PolledPlace helps more farmers ask questions, and it is individuals like Stephanie, Roy, and Bryan with social media that are able to put the correct information in everyone's hands. At the Ogemaw County Fair Dairy Show, a registered calf is given away to one of the youth show constituents. It can only be won once. The drawing is a name pulled out of a hat and the only thing asked in return is that the youth that wins the calf brings the calf back to the show as long as they are able. This is the fourth year that the calf has come from our farm. For the last four years,

the money back to the dairy barn in memory of Leon Rau (Grandpa/ Dad). This year, the donated calf was LEMAJRU-N DEHORNER VANNA P. Yes, she is one of my POLLED babies! This year's winner was Jacob Wolfgang. We wish him good luck with her rearing and look forward to seeing what she does next year! POLLED makes a great herd builder!

Background of Fleyas Holsteins My husband Geoff & I are located in Portland, Victoria in Southern Australia. The farm was purchased in two parts with Geoff purchasing the original section in 2007 and Geoff's parents, Peter & Gloria Thomas, purchasing a second section adjoining the original farm in 2009, which Geoff & I farm as one. This increased the farm from 180 acres to 420 acres. We also lease an additional 260 acres. Fleyas Holsteins was created in 2010. We have a permanent part time worker and we milk 300 cows year round in a 16 a side double up, rapid exit dairy. We have a beautiful climate, 880mm average rain fall and mild temperatures.Although we have known temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius in summer! Our previx Fleyas is a mix of our surnames - FL for Fleming, EY for my maiden name Dey and AS from Thomas. What is your mission statement? No real mission statement, but we breed for what WE want, as ultimately we are the ones that milk the cows and pay the bills. Our aim is to breed cows that classify well, breed for milk and high components and focus on fertility. What are your future goals for your farm? Our future goals include increasing the components of the herd, and overall production, while reducing

What are your standards for selecting bulls? Recently we have focused on positive components, fertility and reasonable type with a focus on corrective mating with in the herd. Although we are always partial to a good Red bull, and of course POLLED has been a focus! We are currently using bulls such as Colt 45-P, Colt-P, Ladd-P, Golden-PP, Proxy-PP, Parma-PP, Eraser-P and the Jersey bull AussieGold-P. We have also used our Polled ET bull Fleyas Ladd James-P to have cheap Polled semen on hand for doubtful heats and recently calved cows. We are now at the stage that the Polled heifers are producing Polled calves from horned sires.

The availability of Polled bulls is astounding compared to just three to four years ago. What will it be like in another three to four years into the future? As more people breed Polled and the genetic pool is extended, it will only grow and become more "accepted" amongst other breeders. What makes your breeding program unique? I would say it is probably not so unique these days with more people getting in to POLLED breeding, but the excitement of breeding horned sires to POLLED heifers and cows is starting to come to fruition this year with our first POLLED heifers calving and embryos coming from bulls such as Main Event, High Octane and AltaTD.
Which cow families are you currently working with? We have descendents from International cows including Rainyridge Talent Barbara EX-95, Winterbray Goldwyn Lotto EX-95, Islehaven Gold Dancer*VRC VG-88 and Golden Oaks Perk Rae EX-90, as well as well known Australian families including Nonis, Dings and Janes. We are also developing our own families on a smaller scale. What inspired you to get involved with Polled? We started breeding Polled in 2012 after reading about the Polled gene and how easy it was to introduce in to our animals. The animal welfare side attracted us - not having to dehorn calves was a huge bonus, but also simply being a bit different to everyone else was a definite attraction. Initially the selection of bulls was limited, our first purchased flush was meant to be to Colt 45-P, but after delays in accessing the semen we used Ladd-P. Polled Testing
There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED.
