Polled Reflections from the "Front Porch"

Chapter 2 - Midnight Musings

Sitting here on the porch this morning as the rain gently drips off of the roof...the time is 1:15am and the sound of the vacuum pump can be heard in the background. The night milking should be about done and soon the crew will be heading in for a few hours of sleep. As I sat here and asked myself why anyone would do this kind of "craziness" my thoughts went to this picture I took of Group 3 the other day. We do this because we love it! Well, most of the time anyway! We love working with and taking care of our cows to keep them happy and healthy. We love working together as a family and as a team! Yep, I guess that's why we do it! Oh, and before I fall asleep in the chair here, I should comment on the picture below. As I mentioned, this is Group 3 and they are definitely "living well!" There are about 90 cows in this group. 70% of them are bred to POLLED bulls! Very exciting for us! Service sires include Ladd P, Piranha P, Ocean PP, Dogma P, Eraser P and Trillion P. Well, the next milking is in 4 hours and they say I'm on for that, so good night friends and take care!

#PolledPlace 7

#PolledPromoters The Hansen farm at 8617 Lincoln Road, Hudson, Iowa has been in our family since 1864. I am part of the sixth generation to live and work here. In 2004, my mom and dad and my three brothers and I added value to the farm by building a creamery and selling our dairy products directly to consumers. Today, 175 Registered Black & White and Red & White Holsteins are milked here. I handle the herd management. My brother Blair manages our 400 acres of cropland, growing alfalfa and corn for feed. My brother Brad manages the creamery, making skim, 1%, whole and chocolate milk, cheese curds, butter, heavy cream and ice cream. My brother Brent manages sales and delivery to our two retail stores and other grocery stores and restaurants in the area. My dad is the mastermind behind it all. My mom handles the tourism side of the business. My wife Jordan handles bookkeeping and marketing. We have another 12 farm employees and 25 retail store employees. We aim to have a sustainable, prosperous farm for the future of all 15 of the children in our next generation. I started breeding for Polled with Aggravation Lawn Boy P-Red. I disliked dehorning and was interested in Red genetics. Currently, we are working on adding Polled to the Pinehurst Brittany, Stookey Elm Park Blackrose, KHW Regiment Apple-Red and Red-Vision Dis Dory-Red cow families. We have also been going back and using older genetics and adding Polled into that. I started using old genetics because I think the dairy cows today are lacking strength. I feel the industry today is breeding the strength right out of the cow. It seems that the dairy industry is more interested in getting high volumes of milk out of young cows and the cows are getting burnt out and not living very long. To me, longevity is more important than a cow that produces 100 pounds a day for only two

Blake Hansen - A New Perspective on Polled

or three years. The old bulls that I'm using today have created a huge impact on the breed. Without them, we may not have had the genetics we have today. I'm not really a big believer in genomics and the numbers game, so the old genetics are easier for me to use. I may have lower GTPIs, but I think the quality of the cows may be better and they'll live longer with an outcross pedigree. Also, the fertility on these old bulls is amazing. Over the past 10 years I've had over 100 Polled cows. Currently in my herd I have close to 80 Polled cows. 75% of the cows today I'm using older genetics for breeding. I'm using old genetics because I've seen over the years that the Polled cows could use more strength and type. Currently the old bulls I'm using are Paclamar Bookmaker, Paclamar Astronaut, ToMar Blackstar, Round Oak Apple Rag Elevation, Boss Iron, Startmore Rudolph, Lawn Boy P-Red, Hanoverhill Starbuck, Pawnee Farm Arlinda Chief, Walkway Chief Mark and Regancrest Durham. Polled bulls I'm using today include Apoll P, Hulk P, Ocean PP, Blueprint PP, Zumba P, Lets Deal P, NUno Kad P, Piranha P, Layton P, Sellabull PP and Enlighten PP. The most interesting bull I have today is a Polled, Red Carrier Bootmaker out of the Apple family. How many Polled, *RC Bookmaker sons have there been?! Different is good if not the best! I would definitely consider collecting and selling my own bull because I want other breeders to enjoy the genetics that I enjoy. The satisfaction of working with a great dairy cow is what I want to pass on. Promoting Polled to breeders has always been something I try to do. Most breeders that come to the farm aren't really into Polled genetics yet. I tell them how great it is, but it seems to stop there. They have the idea that Polled cows aren't as high producing and that turns them away from using Polled genetics. We host public tours on our farm most The Hansen Family of Hansen's Dairy, Creamery & Farm Tours and

8 #PolledPlace

Blake Hansen with Antique P*RC A Polled Red Carrier Bootmaker son from the Apple family! people on tours do notice the scabs from dehorning. I tell people about Polled vs. horned and what the benefits are with Polled genetics. Most people appreciate that with the Polled gene, the cow doesn't have to go through the pain of dehorning. Most consumers are interested in that topic when I bring it up and when I discuss the old genetics on top of that they are amazed! The majority of people ask good questions and see that we care deeply about our cows, but there are some who come in with preconceived notions about how cows are cared for and ask the difficult questions: why are calves separated from their mothers right away, why do they live in small huts for six weeks, why aren't they on grass, why do they stand in manure all day, etc. If they would spend a day in our shoes, they would understand why the answers to these questions make sense. It's hard to fight the anti-dairy sentiments out there because they are so vocal on social media and easily sway the public. Thankfully, we don't experience much of that on our tours or in social media. If you are looking to start hosting tours, from our experience, make sure you have diplomatic answers to tough questions. The last thing you want is to engage in an argument about certain topics. It also goes a long ways to make sure your farm is as clean as possible and cows are healthy and well cared for. Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to these breeders for sharing their Polled story and views on the future of Polled in their respective breeds! POLLED HOLSTEINS Thoeny Farms - Ogilvie, Minnesota

Don & Debbie and Kevin & Stacy Thoeny My husband Kevin and I are employed by the family farm, owned by his parents Don and Debbie. We have 4 children ages 9, 5, 22 months and 1 month. The two oldest girls help me feed calves on the farm. We have employees who help us with the milking and some field work. We milk 180 cows, raise all of our replacement heifers and farm 1,100 acres. We started breeding for Polled about 5 years ago. We started because dehorning is a job that no one enjoys and it's also less stress on the animal. I select the top Polled bulls that meet our breeding goals. The cow family that we started breeding Polled into was Holmgren Shottle Hosanna. Her 5th dam is Markwell Bstar E Raven. So far, we have 15 daughters and 3 grand daughters in our herd. Many of them are Polled heifers by Ladd P, Golden PP and Ohio Style P. Currently, we have daughters of Ladd P, Golden PP, Ohio Style P, Outcome P, Outline P, Homerun P, Science P, Ohare P, Striker P and others in our herd. Right now, the bulls we have in the tank that we're using include Milford P, Enlighten PP, Champ P, Outcome P and Outline P. We had talked about breeding for Polled about 10 years ago, but at the time there weren't any bulls that fit our breeding goals. When we did start 5 years ago, we used them sparingly. Since then, we have started using more as more Polled bulls became available that fit our program. There are so many more Polled bulls to choose from now than there were even just a few years ago. In the future, I would like to see more Homozygous Polled bulls that are higher in type, production and health traits. I think Polled will keep gaining momentum!

help at home with the show heifers. We always milked Holsteins until 2006 when we bought a herd of Registered Brown Swiss. We currently milk around 160 head. I remember when I was a kid, Dad used some Polled bulls as young sires from Burket Falls, Hickorymea and Pine-Tree. We never really had an inspiration to start breeding Polled, it was just nice to skip a calf every once in awhile when it was time to dehorn calves. We have always tried to breed for cows that score well and produce enough milk to make them profitable and get around with a good set of feet and legs. Now, getting all that without the horns makes it even better! We started using Polled bulls more when we purchased a Polled heifer from Roy MacGregor's Arron Doon Sale - Arron Doon Buckeye Chic P*RC - a daughter of West Port Arron Doon Mit P-Red. We have several milking Polled daughters and several Polled yearlings of Chic P. Chic P has two Polled bulls at International Protein Sires and also a grandson at IPS. We are milking several daughters of Polled Holstein sires including: Charger P, Eliminator P, Mitey P, Magna P, Lawn Boy P, Icicle P, Sylvester P, Proxy PP, Colt P, Raspberry P and daughters of the Brown Swiss Polled sire, Lynch P. Our Polled Holstein heifers are sired by Relief P, Ohio Style P, Harper P, Sid PP, Transformer P, Snowball P, Dolo P, Shanosber P, Lumber PP, Ivan PP, Kinnick PP, Apple Jax P, Special Effect P, Call Me P, Dual PP, Golden PP, Parma PP and Parker P. We also have Polled Brown Swiss heifers sired by Jeff PP. Bulls currently being used in the herd are Ocean PP, Homerun P, Outline P, Outcome P, Siren P, Thor PP, Stamp PP, Jax P, Champ P, Cloud Nine P, Outdone P, 300 PP, 241 PP, Glover P, Rascal PP, Sammy P and Gabir P. I think the availability of Polled semen is getting easier and there are more options available. In the future, I would like to see more outcross Polled bulls. It is hard to find something without Lawn Boy P, Colt P, Earnhardt P or Supersire in the pedigree. The future of Polled will only get better! Some of the best cows are being mated to Polled bulls. In my opinion, I think a lot of people are scared to breed Polled genetics. The misconception is that they are going to sacrifice something to get Polled genetics. I tell them that the only thing they will lose in breeding with Polled bulls is the horns!

Polled Testing

There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED. #PolledPastimes Bill Maness developed an interest in Registered Jersey™ pedigrees when his family began the transition to a Jersey herd as their local milk processing plant (in North Carolina) joined the All-Jersey® fluid milk program in 1965, having operated previously with a milking herd of unregistered animals of several breeds. His first experience with Polled Jerseys came in 1967, when four cows originating at Fair Weather Farm, New Lebanon, New York were part of a larger group acquired as his family expanded their herd. All four were Polled daughters of Fair Weather Champion Superb-P, a bull that had been instrumental in propelling the Fair Weather herd – owned and operated by Stanley and Jane Chittenden – to the position of preeminent USA Polled Jersey herd in that era. After his father’s medical condition necessitated selling their herd in 1976, Bill worked in association management for an educators’ professional organization, then returned to the dairy industry in a herdsman role in 1981. Over the next 25 years, he was in similar roles with Registered Jersey™ herds in six states, from New England to Texas to the Upper Midwest and the South, continuing to develop his focus on Jersey history and pedigrees. Diabetic foot surgery in recent years drove his necessary transition away from the physical work on a dairy farm, but he maintains his continuing interest in the Jersey breed by operating – within the physical limitations of his medical condition – Jersey Origins LLC, a historic Jersey pedigree database and reference library. Since his relocation to Wisconsin in 2013,

16 #PolledPlace

Derek and Charisse Orth (Orthridge Jerseys, Lancaster, Wisconsin) have become his associates in this consulting business, which offers Jersey Pedigree Research and Historical Interpretation to Jersey breed enthusiasts around the world, including preparation of narrative presentations about impact herds and significant individual Registered Jerseys™. Extended pedigrees produced from the Jersey Origins LLC database are properly considered as educational materials for the study of ancestry, not “official” pedigrees produced by the several national Jersey breed registry organizations around the world. Bill notes, in developing the Jersey Origins LLC historic Jersey pedigree database, “We have learned that committed breeders of Polled Jerseys (in the USA) have utilized a variety of strategies over the past 100+ years in designating their animals that display the Polled trait, even before AJCC implemented a standard recording and display format for doing so.” A number of early 1900’s Polled animals contained the words “Hornless” or “Polled” in their complete registered name; in more recent years, beginning during the pre-electronic era (prior to 1966) for generating registration certificates and related documents, AJCC (now AJCA) presented the registration numbers of individual Polled animals with “X” before the registration number, then with “P” before the registration number. Subsequently the –P suffix as part of animal names has been utilized for Polled animals, with the suffix –PP now available for Homozygous Polled animals. It is especially noteworthy that an individual animal’s “PP” status can now be determined by the applicable genomic-based test, enabling the selection of potential breeding stock (to perpetuate the Polled trait) in pre-weaned calves. Recent developments in genomic testing for the Polled trait indicates the presence of Polled can arise from two distinctly different sources; historically our pedigree

research indicates that the polled trait transmitted by Normsland Belle Boy-P (3JE68) arises from a different source than the Polled trait transmitted by the Fair Weather (and now Dutch Hollow and Den-Kel) bulls – such as Fair Weather Opportunity-P-ET (29JE2890), Dutch Hollow Oliver-P (7JE1219) and Den-Kel Jace Lovabull-P (1JE630). Genomic testing can clearly speed up genetic progress in perpetuating the Polled trait in the Jersey breed (and may be equally valuable to Polled breeders of other breeds), identifying the Polled Jersey bulls that will have broader appeal based on their overall GPTA values, and identifying homozygous Polled Jersey bulls earlier in life. A “work in progress” at present for Bill and his associates is the planned release – in March 2017 – of Jerseys In America’s Dairyland – A Rich History & A Bright Future, a book detailing the history of the Jersey breed in Wisconsin, developed as a special project for the Wisconsin Jersey Breeders Association. At the WJBA Annual Meeting in March 2015, he was the recipient of the organization’s Distinguished Service Award (photo courtesy of The Country Today).

POLLED Cow/Heifer Rankings

Herd Register: Top 100 Polled Females Ranked by Genomic JPI™ October 2015

The top 100 polled females (cows and heifers) recorded in the AJCA Herd Register are listed in rank order for genomic Jersey Performance Index™ (GJPI). Ties are broken by PTA protein. Cows must have calved within the past 27 months and not have a termination code associated with the current lactation. Heifers must be no older than three years of age on October 6, 2015 and not have a GPTA based on lactation information. Genomic evaluations are calculated from the information source listed in the GT column: (1) own genotype indicated by chip density; (2) GI, genotype imputed from genotypes of progeny; or (3) GA, imputed from ancestors.

A Focus on International Polled

Bickleygate Mitey Dora P with her Magua PP heifer calf Bickleygate Holsteins started when my parents took on a tenancy of a 90 acre farm in 1978. The farm was located in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park in the North of England and was surrounded by forestry. As a first generation farmer, my father Paul had a passion for cows, but an even stronger passion (and need) for efficient milk production. At the time Holstein use in the UK was in its infancy and the availability was limited. Much like polled genetics in 2015! Through hard work and dedication, my parents were able to purchase the farm in 1984. I joined the business straight from school and we moved to a larger farm 50 miles further north in 1989 and have since expanded to around 400 acres with 250 cows in the herd. Our team has also increased with our excellent Herdsman Johnny and Philip our machinery expert. Fresh cows are milked through a robot with the remainder through a herringbone parlor. Cows are grazed on grass between April and October and housed in free stalls during the winter. The diet is based on grass and grass silage plus concentrates. Around 4000 liters of the 9000 liter average comes from forage. Our farm name, Bickleygate, comes

For a number of years, health traits have been important to us as we select for bulls. We need good constituents for our milk buyer and functional but attractive heifers for the guys that buy heifers from us. We are using roughly a third Homozygous Polled bulls, a third Heterozygous Polled and a third horned. These percentages change every year and soon we will be using only Homozygous Polled bulls. We are currently working with the Lila Z, Megan, Papoose, Faith, Gremlin, Peggy, Veronica, Ruby Wine, Rolls, Sara, Linderra and Ghost cow families and are adding Polled into these. It's Time!

Imagine spending your whole life creating a unique bull...like one of those bulls you usually see in the back of the catalog...you know, those extreme high type or show type bulls, Red & White bulls, Polled bulls, outcross bulls or perhaps just a bull with a unique aAa code. You invested in the cow family, you classified, milk recorded, showed, pictured, marketed, flushed and believed in the cow family. You did all the work, took all the risk and paid the interest. You created something that you believe in, but now it seems AIs, for the most part, are only interested in the extreme GTPI bulls and only have room for a few unique bulls. SO IF YOU CREATE ONE, WHAT CAN YOU TO DO? There are a few brave breeders trying to collect and market their own bulls, however once they realize how the distributor or independent sales really work, the novelty quickly runs out. Why? Unless the independent salesperson is getting that $25 semen for $5-$8, they can't make a profit. It's not easy driving around all day if they only sell a few racks at full retail or a lot of racks for $8-$10, and lets face it, there aren't any independent semen sellers out there driving around in their Porsche or spending time on their yacht. It's not anyone's fault, it's just the way it's always been. But...this is 2015! What other business model is still doing commissioned door to door sales successfully in 2015? It's time there was a platform that allowed the breeders of these unique bulls to collect $21 from that $25 sale or $11 from that $15 sale or even $6 from that $10 sale. How many doses would you need to sell to be profitable? What if the semen was $50? Would it matter if you only sold 250 doses? Is that even possible? HAS IT EVER BEEN DONE? HOW MANY HAVE EVER TRIED? We know of a Red bull that is over +3.00PTAT, with positive production and health traits AND no Apple blood. How many of these exist? It's exactly what his breeder was shooting for and we already know there are others looking for the same thing as him, so if you create a bull that suits your own breeding program, and you're going to collect him anyway, why not collect a little extra and see what happens? 24 #PolledPlace
