“The Cold Hard Facts” Polled

Fact #1 - This calf loves Polled! Her name is Fancy and you see not only did Fancy not have to waste part of her day getting dehorned, but she also got to eat more grain that evening when her “dehorned” friends didn’t feel like eating. It was a win-win situation for Fancy that day!

Fact #2 - This “old fellow” loves Polled! I think this picture kind of explains why. Probably no need for further explanation on this one. Fact #3 - This “good looking” young man loves Polled! With his Dad getting more chances to go golfing, it gives him more opportunities to go along. The only thing is if he keeps getting lower scores than Dad, we might have to breed horns again so he can stay home and dehorn. “Take it easy on me son!” Fact #4 - Ok, this grandson of ours probably doesn’t know it yet, but he’s going to love Polled! I suspect the day will come when he asks a question like, “Grandpa, is it true that y’all used to breed cows with horns? How dumb is that?” And then I’ll just look at his Grandma and say, “SMART KID!”

You see the cold hard facts are that everyone around here loves POLLED! After all, what’s not to love?!?! Donald & Joan Yoder & Family

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to these breeders for sharing their Polled story and views on the future of Polled in their respective breeds! POLLED MILKING SHORTHORNS Oceanbrae Farms - Fred Barrett Prince Edward Island, Canada

Fred (left) and Matt Barrett (right) with Oceanbrae N Missy EX-93 Oceanbrae Farms was founded by my father Keith Barrett, with the first pedigreed Milking Shorthorns arriving in the 1950s. I farmed in partnership with my father for many years until he retired a few years ago. I currently farm along with my son, Matthew. My eldest son, Ryan, is also involved in marketing genetics from our herd and he works as Secretary of the Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society. We are located near Summerside in Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province. We milk 55 head, with approximately 45 Milking Shorthorns and 10 Jerseys. We also have a pedigreed herd of Simmental beef cattle, the majority of which are also Polled. Our Milking Shorthorn herd was awarded with a Master Breeder award in 2008. We have had the occasional Polled cow over the years. We used an American bull called Rustic Pride Lofty Jay in the 1980s who left some Polled brood cows in our herd. We always appreciated the benefits of a Polled animal, but we did not breed specifically for Polled. For many years, there were few Polled Milking Shorthorn sires available that were of high genetic merit so we did not pursue Polled as a breeding priority. We are keen to add Polled breeding to our herd if we can do so without sacrificing genetic improvement. Thankfully, we have had access to some Polled genetics in recent years which have enabled us to increase the Polled gene in our herd while still improving our herd for production and type.

10 #PolledPlace

We have two main cow families that have increased the Polled gene in our herd. We purchased Fieldcrest Ideal-P EX-92 as a heifer in a dispersal sale in 2004. She was highly outcross to most of the Milking Shorthorn population and was formally the #1 LPI cow in Canada. She just passed away last year after 8 lactations and more than 82,000 kgs (180,000 lbs) of milk in her lifetime. We have sold two Polled daughters of Ideal-P to breeders in the USA and we have four other daughters in the herd, two of which are Polled. Her Polled son Oceanbrae Ironman-P was sampled by Semex and CMSS Syndicates and has been sold in at least five countries. He should receive a Canadian proof in 2015.

Oceanbrae Fawn’s Accent-P EX-94 Our other main Polled family stems from Oceanbrae Fawn’s Accent-P EX94. She is the result of embryos we purchased out of Rovin Derek Ali Accent-P from the Kulp family in Pennsylvania. We admired the combination of type, production, outcross genetics and high components that Ali Accent-P had, along with the Polled gene. We got two daughters from these embryos, both of which were Polled. Fawn’s Accent-P by CD was flushed as a heifer and has had 9 total daughters, two of which have been Polled. We will be continuing to work with Accent-P and her daughters and we hope to market a Polled bull from this family at some point in the future. Fawn’s Accent-P is the #8 LPI cow in Canada (April 2014) and is the All Time 305 day Record Holder for Fat Production after producing 696 kgs of fat in 305 days in her 2nd lactation at 7.0% fat. She is currently midway through her third lactation and is projected for over 9000 kgs

of milk at 7.8% fat and 3.4% protein. Her extreme components, polled gene, and high type make her one of our top cows at moment. We have daughters of Kulp-Gen OK Acdmy Adam-P and Oceanbrae Ironman-P in our herd at the moment. We also have used Maack Dairy Eclipses-P in our Jersey herd and have heifers by him. We have 10 Polled cows in our milking herd at the moment. We are still using Ironman-P and have also used the Swedish Red sire Andersta-P, but do not have any daughters of him yet. There are still relatively few Polled Milking Shorthorn sires and some are unable to enter Canada as they were privately drawn. Hopefully we can identify and collect a high performance Polled sire that is unrelated to the Accent cow family in the near future. I think that Polled has a future in the Milking Shorthorn breed in large part because the Polled gene is represented at the highest genetic merit of the breed. If we can identify other Polled families with the hope of creating a Homozygous Polled sire of high merit it would go a long way to expand the Polled gene in the breed. #PolledPanel

Continued from page 10 We began breeding for Polled in 2005 when Abigail suggested adding Polled genetics to the herd to add value and AI interest in our herd’s genetics. The first Polled sire we used was Oblige P, a young sire from Select Sires and our first Polled heifer was born in May of 2006. Lemajru-N Oblige Verbascum went on to classify VG-85 and produce 135,745 pounds of milk, 5348 pounds of fat and 4325 pounds of protein in her lifetime. Our breeding philosophy for Polled has changed as genomic information of bulls became available. We started by using Polled young sires and discontinued semen (Ottawa P) on our high TPI cows who were on their second and greater breedings. As sires came in with genomic information, we started to use Polled genetics for first breedings to our high TPI cows and third plus breeding on other cows. We now genomically test all of our Polled heifers and pick matings accordingly. Lower Polled TPI heifers are bred to

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED

top genomic sires while high genomic Polled heifers we consider breeding and/or flushing to top genomic Polled sires. Our top polled cows Lemajru-N Deann Giggle and Lemajru-N Portrait Gilly are grand-daughters of Lemajru-N Marshall Gazelle EX-90 who was the dam of Lemajru-N Oman Gopher-ET who was part of ABS’s young sire program in 2008. Both of Giggle’s daughters, Lemajru-N Shamrock Glee and Lemajru-N Supersire Genesis have been or are currently on the locator list. The first daughter is bred back after her flush to Ohare P this past fall. We have used 23 different Polled sires to date with heifers from 11 different Polled sires. The sires we have used and/or have daughters out of include Oblige P, Ottawa P, Portrait P, Signif P, Mitey P, Magna P, Tyler P, Jimbeam P, Charger P, Werth P, Dual PP, Transformer P, Proxy PP and Colt P. We currently have pregnancies by Ohare P, Impala P, Satchel P, Dehorner PP, Fusion PP, Ivan PP, Eliminator P,

#1 Ranked Type for Red & Polled in the Breed Current ranking for both Red & Polled based on April Proofs:

and Manuel P. We will soon be adding Trey PP and Eraser P to our line-up of Polled sires. The Polled sire selection is blossoming, but there is a lot of work ahead of us to keep the inbreeding down. We have focused on non-Lawn Boy P crosses which is important in giving breeders choices. We would love to see Polled bulls that are as competitive in type and production as their nonPolled bull counter parts in a sire lineup. Looking to the future, Polled will continue to be a part of our herd. I don’t see us as becoming 100% polled right away because cows need to be built correctly with enough milk to keep them productive in a herd. As an industry, we are going to continue to need to breed our animals to nonPolled sires to improve Polled cattle genetics and offer the industry outcross bloodlines. One of our goals is that we would love to breed a Polled cow who can score excellent and excel on the tanbark trail.

Longmoor Holsteins,United Kingdom - A Passion for Pedigrees by Stephanie Stout

Four years ago, Longmoor Holsteins did not exist in the United Kingdom. The Rogers family, Colin, Glynis, son Stuart & wife Helen, have been dairying for generations, but it was Stuart’s passion for continuing the development of their pedigreed Holstein cows that was the reason behind relocating the Cherwell herd to Longmoor Farm in Dorset. The move was a huge project for the family. Four hundred head of cattle were moved to the southwest to prime dairying country where a prosperous future for the family could be made. Once the first task of building a new milking facility was completed, the cows could be moved. The first calves carrying the new Longmoor prefix were born at the new farm in March of 2011. The family is now fully settled into Longmoor Farm. Milking 240 cows, they sell high quality milk to Waitrose, a supermarket whose high standards must be met to fulfill the requirements of the contract.

New Milking Parlor Since the move, many building projects have been carried out, with the aim to increase the level of comfort for all animals. This year’s project is to provide cubicles to all heifers from five months old and build cubicles for the far off dry cows. This will then mean that every animal is housed in cubicles from 5 months of age. The farm’s goal is to meet very high levels of health and welfare. Stuart’s wife Helen is a Large Animal Veter-

inary Surgeon who specializes in bovine reproduction. Together they place great emphasis on attention to detail, particularly in the calving and breeding of their own replacements. All heifer calves are retained and housed in hutches until weaned. Bull calves and beef calves are sold at 3-4 weeks of age. During a trip to World Dairy Expo in 2012, Stuart and Helen attended the World Classic Sale where the average price was $33,111 and the top price was for a Homozygous Polled Red heifer. The message taken away from this sale was that Polled and Genomics were here to stay. #PolledPassport

Continued from page 16 In time, he hopes to be a leading Polled breeder in the United Kingdom. There is only one way the Polled popularity is going to grow...social media highlights the increasing awareness and demand for Polled semen.

Ivana P-RC (Ladd P x Niagra) Last year Stuart teamed up with Diamond Genetics in France to purchase the #1 Polled heifer in Europe. Ivana P-RC (Ladd P x Niagra) is now #2, but she has reached flush age so watch for

progeny from her early in 2015! Her GTPI is +2332, NM$ is +634, PTAT is +3.36, Conf is +15 and her DGV-LPI is +2974. She is Red Carrier and Polled from the famous Pietje family. Another cow family we are working with breeding Polled into is the homebred family of Cherwell Durham Heather-Red VG-88. Her dam is a Red EX-90 Cederwal Tait that is still at the farm and next dam is a Red EX-90 Carrousel Regiment. Behind her is VG-87 Maral Starbuck Starbrik. Heather has a Polled Red Chipper P heifer and is bred back to Ladys Manor Olympian-RC. Heather’s dam is bred back to GenerVations True Grit P in hopes for a Polled Red maternal sister to Heather.

Focus on International POLLED Stuart’s goal is to breed an entire herd of Polled cattle with great health status. He thinks once you have your first Polled calf, you don’t look back and only want more of the same. Polled is infectious to the breeders willing to step up and make a profound change to their herds. Follow Stuart and the Longmoor Polled breeding on Twitter @Longmoorfarm and on Facebook at Longmoor Farm.

POLLED US Jersey History by Jay Herron

“I started using polled genetics in 2007, but there was no list of available Jersey polled semen. I had to piece together data from several different sources to create a spreadsheet of potential sires that I could easily sort and compare. I did this for my own benefit, but realized that it would be easy to share with other Jersey breeders if I created a website. I decided that a website to promote the polled trait should also include some history. I scoured the internet and found information in many different sources, but no one had compiled them into a chronological story recently. When I put all the information together, the “History of the Polled Jersey in the USA” was born. The website went live in 2010 and has had visitors from all over the world. I really see every farm being completely polled in 20 years. I think genomics will help that dream become a reality. Dehorning will eventually come under public scrutiny and “dehorning at conception” will be the most economic solution. I feel the key to the momentum of the polled movement is genetic diversity. We need to source future polled sires from both sides: top polled dams as well as top polled sires. The only way to achieve this is to use polled bulls on as many different cow families as possible.” - Jay Herron The Polled Jersey originated in Ohio we have as a result of the double cross on better. #PolledPlatform Polled Name Game My new all-time favorite name for a Polled animal is “Got-No-Horns PP” - she’s a Homozygous Polled Long P from Aho Bros. Dairy in Minnesota. It has been fun to follow her on Facebook. Naming calves is always fun, but being creative with Polled names is even more fun! Go ahead, have a few laughs too! Importance of Coding for Polled What is the easiest way to tell if an animal is Polled just by looking at their name? The “P” of course (or “PP” for Homozygous Polled)! When you are registering your animals, regardless of breed, take a second and add “P” or “PP” at the end of their name or number. This easily identifies Polled and Homozygous Polled animals without having to do any pedigree research. We also add “P” or “PP” at the end of their names when we enter them into our dairy herd management software. Also, be sure to notify your breed association of any changes to their Polled status so codes and names can be updated. This allows for your animals to fall under the correct #PolledPlacings category.

Polled Goals “A goal without a deadline is just a dream.” What Polled goals do you have? Having an animal on the #PolledPlacings list? Sending a Polled bull to AI? A 100% Polled herd? Showing a Polled animal at World Dairy Expo? I would like to thank everyone for supporting my goal of launching a Polled Dairy Cattle magazine and for supporting the 2nd issue of #PolledPlace! I have very much enjoyed working with Polled breeders all around the world. Although there may be thousands of miles and oceans between us, sharing the common bond and passion for Polled makes me feel like I have visited your farms. In this issue’s #PolledPassport feature, Stuart Rodgers from the United Kingdom said it very well when he stated, “There is only one way the Polled popularity is going to grow...social media highlights the increasing awareness and demand for Polled semen.”

Share your passion for POLLED!
