I am a 23 year old recent graduate of architecture from the University of Western Australia. I have worked as a work experience student at Donaldson and Warn architects for two years and have gained much needed experience in working in a real-world architectural setting.



As an architecture student, I retained a student work-experience position at Donaldson and Warn architects for two years. In this role, I worked on various commercial and education projects including Yanchep Secondary School Stage 1. In this role, I worked with a team of architects from schematic design through to contract documentation. My roles for this project included CAD documentation and 3D modelling, scheduling, and managing the procurement and distribution of loose furniture for the entire project. My other roles at Donaldson and Warn included Revit documentation, preparation of graphic works for final documentation, reports and presentations. Being included in a team environment through various project phases has strengthened my decision making, presentation and most importantly, communication skills. In addition to my continued work experience, I have maintained a good record of academic results which demonstrates my commitment and dedication to excel in architecture. Continuously balancing my university and job commitments have strengthened my organisation, communication and team work skills which I feel will put me in good stead with delivering quality work within deadlines in architectures fast paced work environment. I have explored various sectors of architecture from small scale urban dwellings to large scale urban development projects which explore sustainability and building technology. My explorations range across all the disciplines involved in architecture reflecting my wide and ever growing interests. I have experience with working with a range of programs including Revit, AutoCAD, 3DS Max and Rhino both in a university and professional work environment. I very much hope that this has given an informative introduction to my profile and that my enthusiasm and aptitude for architecture has been demonstrated. As a portfolio, this aims to be a representation of my work as a student; my vision and my process. Each project presented in this book highlights the culmination of a semesters work towards the final submitted design.

Of the various surviving temples, the Kandāriyā Mahādeva is the best preserved temple from the medieval period in India. The temple was built in 1050 CE by King Dhangadeva and was dedicated to the deity Shiva. Typical of Indian temples, it is decorated with a profusion of sculptures with intricate details and friezes reflecting the symbolism and expressiveness associated with ancient Indian art. Of the friezes 10% focuses on erotic arts while the other 90% looked at daily life. A large focus of what was considered symbolic of the ‘daily life’ was dance, specifically classical dance.

KANDARIYA MAHADEVA

The Khajuraho temple sits within the Vindhya mountain range in Central India, it makes up one of the most interesting mix of temples built in India. Historical records show that the Khajuraho temple site held 85 temples by the 12th century spread over 20 square kilometres. Built between the dates of 950 and 1050 CE, the majority of temples were built by the Chandela dynasty.

The project will create a residence for the custodian of the temple complex and also a modest centre for the study and practise of various Indian classical dances such as Kathak, Bharathanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Kathakali.

The sense of community that existed with the sites previous Li Longs was strong due to its close packed space. Space is configured in such a way it promotes use of alleyways and courtyards, these being ‘shared’ spaces. With todays fast pace environment, more and more this sense of community is quickly disappearing. Shared balconies and open spaces are a large part of this project to provide opportunities for encounters and encourage a ‘community’.

Surrounding Site

‘Corridors’ for pedestrian entry has been placed throughout all sides of the site in relation to the surrounding site. The street front is an important factor in the old site. This is something that has tried to be retained with the new proposal with a linear strip on the East side of the site following the site boundary. With the lowest floors filled with small shop lots, it is to retain the sites street prescence and micro economy for the area.

South orientated sun is important in Shanghai to allow for optimum natual lighting inside apartment spaces. The nature of the building has been rotated to allow most living spaces to have south facing sun while amenities have been pushed towards the back of the apartments.

From image to animation, this project looks at American artist and architect Lebbeus Woods. After selecting an image from him, we were given the task to imagine a 60 second animation revolving around the image giving us the opportunity to animate and render via 3ds Max and V-Ray. Laid out is the process taken throughout the semester from its inception to the final animation.

The ‘cathar castles’ is a term to describe a group of castles or fortresses built by the French king on the south of France at the end of the Albigensian Crusade. The cathars were a religion based on Christianity and its practises predated the innovations of the Catholic Church. Peyrepertuse is one of the “Five Sons of Carcassonne” along with the castles Quéribus, Puilaurens, Termes, and Aguilar. It is called the ‘Celestial Carcassonne’ because it is the biggest of the five castles and it is as vast as Carcassonne.

This project uses Peyrepertuse Castle in Duillhac-sous France as a site for a modern intervention featuring a modest residence for the Keeper of the gate, and a public medieval studies centre. Four artefacts will be selected ranging in size and scale to give a taste of life in the Middle ages in France, in particular domestic artefacts from the Cathar Kitchens from the 11th to 13th century. In this case, a culinary centre has been chosen to demonstrate and educate individuals about cooking techniques of the time.

Few exampls are the suburban seperation of Caucasians living further out of the city limits and African Americans living closer to the city centre which was instigated by the politically caused ‘white flight’ of the 1960s. Another example is Atlanta’s urban shape sprawling outwards whcih is caused by the lack of environmental factors forcing it upwards.

The project required us to explore an assigned city- in this case Atlanta in a systematic form beyond what is traditionally addressed in a typical history book.

Each of these ‘froces’ which show in the cities urban form has been heavily explored and shown graphically.

Placed along the Perth foreshore, the structure sits just along the edge of the Swan River reflecting the Perth city line. Similar to Escher’s tessellating graphic works, the structure acts as a reflection of the rectilinear and glass style of architecture that Perth city is moving towards.

The project called for the creation of a sundial to celebrate any creative person, in this case M.C. Escher. It is a functional monument that triggers the memory of the viewer or introduce them to a collective memory of a significant event or person passed. M.C. Escher was a Dutch graphic artist who was well known for his explorations of impossible constructions, reflections, tessellations and the idea of infinity.

Stepping stones made of white stone are inset into the ground leading towards the sundial structure. With mirrors placed along the outer edge of the structure, individuals who enter the structure are faced with reflections of themselves and the surrounding area. Certain mirrors where placed directly opposite each other create the so called ‘infinity’ effect where reflections of reflections are created giving a nod to the fascination Escher’s work creates.

Following on from the sundial project, this stereoscope uses graphic artist M.C. Escher as an inspiration. The sides open out to reveal stereoscopic images on the outer flap and mirrors on the inside. Both sides of the cube act as a stereoscope. Opening the top, the viewer is faced with an interior of mirrors on all sides including a quadrilateral mirror pyramid that breaks up the reflection. When tilted, an infinity reflection can be seen on each side due to the mirrors set directly opposite each other.

STEREOSCOPE

A stereoscope is a viewing device built to help view stereoscopic images. A stereoscopic pair of separate images depict views of the left eye and right eye which are at slightly different perspectives. By splitting the vision, the brain overlays the two images and registers them as a single three dimensional image. Using a pair of mirrors at 45 degree angles to the user’s eyes, both reflects a stereoscopic image on either side.

The brief called for the deisgn of a self sufficient cabin. The cabin has been designed as a weekend ‘getaway’ cabin. By some fault in the Synergy and Water Corporation system, the area selected is not within the electricity and gas grid. Neither is it within the Water Coporation sewage and water network. However, the site selected includes a relatively large water reservoir South of the site. The need for a laundry has been negated due to the shorter periods of stays at the cabin. In order to deal with internal heating, a fireplace has been put in the cabin for colder winter months.

Built up against a rockface, the cabin is built to for multiple climbing avenues. With both indoor and outdoor lead climbing walls and built in crash pads the client can continue training. The cabin has also been designed to have a bouldering cave and a wall for a built in hangboard. Open and closed shelving is provided next to the bouldering cave and in the living area with spaces large enough for various forms of climbing gear.
