Program

The program is made up of research, development, and public spaces for all members of the community. The community spaces will be free so that island residents may be involved on the campus, and travelers will be encouraged to visit Roosevelt Island. The community component will feature work by students of Cornell Tech and fulfill the island’s need of amenities. The upperlevel office spaces will be restricted to the public but still visually engaged with the rest of the building and campus.

Site Context Roosevelt Island has a deep, transformed history. The surviving historic buildings serve as a reminder to the residents and people of the rest of New York of all of its many phases. Roosevelt Island is socially and physically isolated from the city’s surrounding regions. The isolation has given the relatively small community of less than 12,000 people a unique character and culture from other districts of the city. The residents are ethnically and demographically diverse which contributes to the culture of the Island as a whole. The close-knit group of residents carries its own traditions, such as Farmer’s Markets and art festivals. However, some of these recurring events lack a permanent home. 4

The position of the land on the East River lends itself to significant precipitation and prevailing winds. The master plan for Cornell Tech completed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM) considers the tight flood zone by implementing a centralized Tech Walk that elevates the ground level five feet above the perimeter of the Island. The residents are accustomed to walking to locations on the Island. On the Cornell Tech Campus end, there is one vehicular road that loops around, and the rest of the campus is pedestrian friendly. The lower half of the Island, especially from Cornell Tech to the Four Freedoms memorial, has advantageous views of both Manhattan and Queens.

Systems Integration The building’s indoor environment aims to achieve holistic sustainability. Indoor vegetation is part of biophilic design, which incorporates nature into the spaces where we live, work, learn, and enjoy our leisure time. Building-integrated vegetation not only offers us a means of reconnecting with nature, but it can reduce occupant stress, improve productivity, and generally enhance an occupant’s experience and aesthetic satisfaction of a space. The building’s voronoi motif is continued in the living wall biofilter. Custom cut growing medium panels are placed in the negative space of the voronoi wall. The

active filtration system utilizes the building’s storm water collection system. Its automatic irrigation decreases the need for maintenance. The atrium space is a light well that cascades diffused sunlight onto the vegetation and the users. Natural ventilation is utilized in the envelope and through the multi-story atrium, and it is supplemental to the heating, cooling, and air supplied by the active chilled beams. The biofilter increases indoor air quality by reducing indoor air toxins. The living wall biofilter is an acoustic barrier and reduces indoor noise pollution.

DIGITAL ARTS GALLERY Location Cleveland, Ohio Studio Semester Fall 2018

The proposed Digital Arts Gallery in Cleveland insinuates a literal formal projection onto the existing B&O Train Station. The projection of the new addition is embodied in the addition from its structure to its skin. Its linear passage can be further discovered in the clearly extruded nature of the structure.

The building’s skin implies that the body of the addition has cracked and unhinged itself to allow attachment onto the existing building. Such ideas are found successful in the continuity of the extruded forms from skin to structure. 14

Post Digital Design Practice Digital tools are now used to mediate most human experiences. The distinction between the digital and physical is fading due to the union of the two interfaces. Parameters of current design practice have influenced the built world by creating a language that designers didn’t realize they were speaking. In the post-digital era, designers must accept and engage the advantageous means of communication as developing cyborgs. A cyborg is a person whose physiological functioning is aided by or dependent upon a mechanical or electronic device. Digital Arts Gallery

There is no definite guide to what architecture should be or what it will be in the future as it is being redefined indefinitely. In the post digital era, it is valid that materials can and will imply a previously undefined sense of character.

ANOMALY Location Florence, Italy Studio Semester Spring 2018

Located in a historically valued site, this academic extension challenges the use of symmetry in modern architecture within historical context by breaking the grid with a structural anomaly. This irregularity in plan and section creates moments of spacial tension that are followed with relief.

CHILDREN’S EDUCATION CENTER Location Cleveland, Ohio Studio Semester Fall 2017

This educational building functions as a gateway from the built world to the natural environment. Organic forms are derived from the growth patterns found in sea creatures such as coral. Site Context Its agricultural location in the Irishtown Bend neighborhood has potential growth within Cleveland's urban context. Overlapping spaces make businesses more attractive to visit; the aggregate building uses a conglomeration of spaces to further this notion. Systems Integration The organic void spaces throughout the structure creates not only ideal views of the river but creates a relaxing atmosphere for areas such as stationary study pods. The aggregate building integrates native foliage into the structure with the use of interior and exterior green walls. Southern light seeps into public spaces through the gaps of the vegetation, creating a naturalistic sunshade that emits fragmented sunlight, making a relaxing and calm environment throughout the structure.

MARKET HALL Location Akron, Ohio Studio Semester Spring 2017

The market hall is a gateway for the historic neighborhood to enter the Lock 3 civic park. It features a grand entrance that progresses downhill with the surrounding topography towards Lock 3. Program Vendor locations on the lower level are adjustable to accommodate a variety of organized functions. A large port located along the west side provides direct shipping access to the main market. The public space on the east side features a cafe with outdoor seating that overlooks the nearby park. In contrast to the large space of the open market, a bar is nested in the mid level, and it is directly accessible from the central elevator or through a series of interior terraces that reflect the exterior landscape. Private offices in the upper floors lead to terraced outdoor spaces that are available for employees of the market.

COMMUNITY CENTER Location Waterloo, Ohio Studio Semester Spring 2017

The Waterloo arts district is a vessel of expression for the community’s local artists. Art flows throughout the streets in various forms such as murals and sculpture gardens. The new community center will integrate culture and healthy lifestyle practices into this heavily trafficked corner of town. Program The community center will reach out to pedestrians with its unique form that celebrates the nearby cafes and music shops. Pedestrians are able to peek inside many of the fitness and culture zones from the street and will have full access to a large community space on the terraced roof. The outdoor terrace is cradled by the structure which blocks noise pollution. Small linear viewing ports line the steps of the roof top terrace which encourages engagement between the exterior and interior. This portion of the community center is easily accessible and features an outdoor pool and a viewing lounge for the town’s hot spots. The community center engages pedestrians from about every angle on the interior and exterior. As people navigate through the provocative form, they will discover a large variety of spaces.

HOUSING COMPLEX Location Cleveland, Ohio Studio Semester Fall 2016

Modular housing that accommodates residential ideals while alluring pedestrians to the public spaces below. Program and Circulation The housing complex consists of a public lobby, cafe, and retail shop on the first floor and a series of unit apartments on the second and third floor. In this model, wooden materials represent public spaces while white material represents private. Vertical circulation is placed in the central core to reduce the distance to and from each apartment. The central core ascends to the accessible rooftop indicated in white. The sizable cantilever creates shelter over the entrance of the retail shop and cafe. The accessible rooftop and apartment units face the nearby river to optimize views outward and natural light inward. Deep mullions act as a vertical louver to block unwanted sunlight and views from the street. A private entrance for apartment residents is available in the west end.

MOMENTUM CHAIR Wilsonart Chair Competition Presented at the 2019 International Contemporary Furniture Fair Studio Semester Fall 2018

The momentum chair captures the ambition that lies in the future. Its sleek edge conditions imply that the chair was originally a single sheet of constant thickness and has been scored and folded at several points to create a cantilevered seat. The volume of the seat suggests that the chair has both an exterior and interior space which are expressed through the use of differentiating materiality. An element of trust is utilized with the cantilevered seat; thus, creating an unconscious relationship between the user and the chair. The momentum chair can therefore be viewed in subject hood instead of only being an object in the room. Fabrication To assemble the structurally sound cantilevered seat, the digital model of the chair was first sliced vertically with 3/4” sections to match the thickness of the plywood. The contour lines of the sliced edges were next projected onto a flat plane for CNC data entry. Two sheets of plywood were CNC cut, stacked, and clamped together to produce the chair’s substructure. The Wilsonart laminate veneer could then be adhered onto the sanded plywood.
